Advocaat’s 15th anniversary celebrations begin with chess tournament for pupils

As part of activities to mark its 15th anniversary, a full service commercial law firm, Advocaat Law Practice, has organised a mini chess tournament for school children.

Pupils of Whanyinna School in the floating community of Makoko participated in the “Chess in Communities Mini Tournament” held on Saturday.

The winners who got scholarship support are Kisegbeji Benjamin (overall winner), Avlessi Thank God (best junior player) and Kpago Mary (best female player).

The ‘Chess in Communities Mini Tournament’, which held on the sand-filled ground of the school, featured no fewer than 48 players from primary and junior secondary classes.

They competed for a trophy and scholarship prizes.

Makoko, sometimes described as the “Largest floating slum in the world” is a unique low-income community, a third of which is built on stilts in a lagoon off the Lagos mainland.

Advocaat Law Practice Founding Partner, Ola Alokolaro, said the mini tournament was one of many events to celebrate the firm’s 15th anniversary.

He said that it was organised through Strictly Law Business (SLB) in partnership with a non-profit organisation, Chess in Slums Africa.

Alokolaro said: “It’s our way of giving back to our community. We started off the practice in Yaba, very close to this place, which is why we decided to choose this particular community to give back to.”

On the choice of chess, he said: “Chess is a very strategic game and it helps to build the mind and it’s important that the minds of these kids are engaged from an early age.

“It is our intention to sponsor the children from first to third place and ensure that their education for the year is taken care of.

“We’re definitely going to continue to partner with Chess in Slums, with some of their initiatives, both in the near and the future terms.”

He urged other law firms to consider similar charitable causes to lift the society.

“It’s very important to uplift each other and that’s the only way we can build the nation,” Alokolaro said.

Founder, Strictly Law Business, Olubosola Ajala, said her organisation empowers lawyers and law firms on growing profitable practices.

“Being one of our clients, we had to work together with Advocaat Law Practice on its 15th anniversary, to conceptualise the idea of giving back to society.

“We worked with them to organise this chess tournament. It’s their way of giving back.

“As a service provider to them, we had to ensure that everything that had to do with the success of the chess tournament was well-executed.”

  • India 2017 : A fantastic tournament

    India 2017 : A fantastic tournament

With the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 concluded on Saturday in Kolkata, the media gathered at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium for a closing press conference on Thursday.

Jaime Yarza, Head of FIFA Tournaments, reflected on a “fantastic tournament”, while the Chairman of the India 2017 Local Organising Committee (LOC) and President of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), Praful Patel, spoke of his delight at the way his country has embraced the competition.

Javier Ceppi, Director of the India 2017 LOC, stressed the important role all stakeholders in India played in making the tournament a success.

Jaime Yarza, Head of FIFA Tournaments, declared: “It’s been a fantastic tournament until now, with an overwhelming response of everybody involved. First and foremost, the fans have filled the stadiums in all the matches, showing fair play and respect, cheering on all the teams, and really loving the football they have seen.

“The figures speak for themselves: more than 1.2 million fans attended games at the stadiums. By the final matchday, we’re probably going to break the [attendance] record of all the other U-17 World Cups and we might even break the record for the U-20 World Cup, which is an amazing achievement. It really shows that India is a footballing nation in every sense. The hard work put in place during so many years has received a great response from everybody. It has been a very proud moment for all of us.”

Praful Patel, Chairman of the India 2017 LOC and President of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), added: “I am extremely delighted, happy and satisfied that our dream project to bring the first-ever World Cup to India, the first-ever FIFA tournament to India, has been an astounding success in terms of organisation, infrastructure, and the conduct of the games. It shows that India has arrived on the world football scene and we are able to host the finest tournaments. If we can host the FIFA U-17 World Cup, I’m sure India is ready for any of the big games in the future.

“We have invested heavily in our grassroots development projects, and the principle reason why we hosted this edition of the World Cup was to continue to keep our focus on the grassroots development and attract younger kids of all age groups to the game. The younger we catch them, the better for the game in the future. This tournament especially has been absolutely fantastic in attracting the youngsters to the stadiums.

“We have bid for the FIFA U-20 World Cup to be hosted in 2019. I will certainly say that I will use all the goodwill at India’s command to good use for that bid. We will continue this onward march of Indian football.”

For Javier Ceppi, Director of the India 2017 LOC, “That culture [here in India] of getting things done at the last minute was not going to work. We got a buy-in from all the stakeholders and that was the single most important thing. Like any other World Cup, this tournament has had its challenges, but the amount of goodwill, the amount of energy, and the amount of importance that the different stakeholders have applied to this World Cup has been fantastic. That has been what has allowed us to deliver the event so far.

“The country knew that there was only one ‘first time’ and this was the first time that India has hosted a FIFA tournament. Hopefully, India will get to host many other FIFA tournaments, but there is only one ‘first time’, so that was the sense of drive that we all had.”

  • Ofurumapepe wins Udom’s U-20 football tournament

Ofurumapepe wins Udom’s U-20 football tournament

Ofurumapepe in Ijaw language means, the great white shark. The shark is strong and rugged. It remains afloat and never swallowed by the tempestuous sea. The Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Seriake Dickson, adopted it as his sobriquet when he sought a reelection. He emerged victorious.

In the same spirits, when Bayelsa State was invited recently to participate in an Under-20 football tournament sponsored by the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Emmanuel Udom, a new team assembled to represent Bayelsa decided to name itself after Dickson’s sobriquet, Ofurumapepe.

There was something spectacular about the Ofurumapepe football team. The team was solely sponsored by Dickson’s Special Adviser on Youths, Ibarakumo Otobo. Otobo took it as his personal project. He did not wait for funding from the government. In fact, his passion to empower the youths and develop their talents compelled him to found the team.

Again, the team was brought together after rigorous screenings. Youths from all the local government areas, indigenes and non-indigenes residing in the state were given an opportunity to compete for shirts. The best among them were selected to form the Ofurumapepe.

The result was resounding. They played fantastic football similar to the ‘tiki-taka’ soccer of known clubs like Barcelona FC and Arsenal FC. Indeed, they thrashed all their opponents losing only their first game because of late arrival. Niger Delta Report gathered that at Uyo, where the tournament was held, Ofurumapepe was a spectacle.

Among the 18 teams including teams representing Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Edo, Kano, and Akwa Ibom states, Ofurumapepe made Bayelsa proud by emerging as the winner of the Governor Udom Under-20 Football Tournament. They brought the cup home.

The Coach of the team, Mr. Gwegwe Ada, said the feat would not have been possible without Ototo. He said the special adviser took full responsibility of all the expenses incurred by the team.

Ada said: “If it is not for him, I don’t think this trophy will be here. He footed all the bills. He had shown love to the youths of Bayelsa. One individual came to the rescue to sponsor a team to represent the state. It is a welcome development.

“We named the team after the governor’s title, Ofurumapepe. The governor answered Ofurumapepe and won his election. We decided to answer the name. We went and we conquered. We promise that we will continue to make Bayelsa state proud”.

He said the team had been selected to represent Nigeria in international football tournament and appealed to Dickson to support the team to ensure brighter future for the youths.

“We are appealing to individuals, multinational companies to come and support us. We know the crime rates in the society, cultism, sea piracy. We can take the boys out of the streets through grass root sports development”, he said.

In his remarks, Ototo said he was proud of the achievements of the team. He said persons who kept evading responsibilities by saying there was no money in Dickson’s government were ungrateful.

He said: “We are all salary earners. So what do people do with their salaries? I passed through a lot of difficulties. Some people even discouraged me not to engage in it. They told me that in football you only spend money and don’t get returns especially in Nigeria.

“But I told them that I was not doing it in order to benefit but I want the youths to benefit. I made a vow that if I assume any good position in government, I will do my best to ensure that the youths of the state are taken to the permanent site.

“I am happy that Bayelsa has become champions. The opportunity given to the players to showcase their talents and skills is the key factor. I want to advise all the coaches in the state and the management board of the sports council, whenever you are making selections, ensure that the right persons are selected.

“You cannot select people who are not qualified because of the positions of their brothers. I have brothers who are footballers but they are not in the team. I ensured that qualified people were selected and you look at the outcome”.

He described the team as one of the best teams in football. He said he spent five days in Uyo to pep up the players and relate with them. He said the programme was in line with his personal project, Operation Leave the Streets.

He added: “This is one of the best team I have ever seen in this town because their ball possession was exceptional. I never knew the state could produce a team of this nature. I am a grass root person. I spent five days in Uyo to be with the them and to encourage them.

“I want the youths to leave the streets because when they are out of the streets, we will find no reason to bring military men to come and secure our states. Our state will be secured. Our leadership should engage in these things.

“You don’t just condemn them. Have you asked yourself a question, how many persons have you used your position to take out of the streets. You are condemning militants but what have you done to help them.

“I want to use this opportunity to appeal to the youths of Bayelsa to shun violence. All vices should be kept in the dark and we should come to the open to pursue real life”.

  • Golf patrons honoured at tournament

    Golf patrons honoured at tournament

Satisfied with the contributions towards the growth and development of the Tiger Golf Club (TGC) and Ibadan Golf Club (IGC) by the immediate past patron, Gen. Sanusi Nasiru Muazu and his successor, Gen. Lazarus Chima Ilo, the clubs have organised a farewell and welcome golf tournament in their honour.

Gen. Muazu was the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division Nigerian Army, and Gen. Lazarus Chima Ilo is the current patron of the club and General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division Nigerian Army.

In his address at the closing ceremony, the Captain, Tiger Golf Club, Chief Olatunji Aderoju said the club has been lucky over the years to have GOCs that have significant love for it.

“Bringing their wealth of experience to bear, every patron has impacted positively on the club in many ways,” he said.

Chief Aderoju praised Gen. Muazu for his numerous development programmes which he said have taken the club to an appreciable height. These, he said, include construction of new block of chalets which comprised 18 self-contained rooms; construction of new golf holes; building of new practising green and invitations to his friends to donate for the different projects executed.

He said: “Major-Gen. S.N. Muazu spent approximately seven months here and by the time he left; many members were wondering if it was possible for anyone to have done so much for the club within such a short time. Before he was called up to a higher service, he initiated new and profound ideas that took the club to an enviable height. The club will not forget easily this person who influenced the present numerical growth of the club through his aggressive membership drive.”

Praising the incoming patron of the clubs, Aderoju said the clubs were privileged to have him, expressing confidence that he would take the club to even greater heights.

Already, he has been credited with providing security to the club whenever the need arises.

Also speaking, the chairman, organising committee, Mr. Alfred Amubioya stated that the event was a unique one, in the sense that it was the first time Tiger and Ibadan Golf Clubs jointly coordinated a golf event to honour patrons of both clubs. He said he was optimistic that captains of both clubs will continue to build on this new found co-operation.

Responding, Gen Ilo said golf is a very important game in the Armed Forces, saying it was the only game he had seen senior generals participate in several years after retirement.

He added that the Chief of Army Staff, Maj-Gen. Yusuf Buraitai places priority on sports as part of measures to reposition the Nigerian Army and make it more responsive to its statutory roles.

Gen. Ilo promised to do his utmost to ensure that he and his officers developed greater interest in golf as well as uplift the clubs.

“The two clubs have prospered and have done very well under the previous patrons. They will not witness a decline in fortune during my period.  I will do what is essential for him to surpass whatever had been achieved in the past. I consider it a great and special privilege and also a challenge,” he said.

He urged captains of both clubs to meet with him to discuss areas where most profound impact can be made, even as he promised to continue the chalet project begun by his predecessor.

“We will not abandon the accommodation project Gen. Muazu had begun before he left as patron. I see it as a revenue project deserving extreme attention and I think all hands being on deck, we will accomplish it,” he said.

However, Ilo sought help to repair the access road leading to the clubs.

“The presentation of our special guest of honour poses a greater challenge. The bad state of the road is somewhat a problem. The army cannot do it alone. I believe that with the support of all the great men here, we will be able to do something about the road in the shortest possible time,” he said.

He commended the chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Chief Akin Oke, for finding time to attend the ceremony, adding that his presence would make things happen with regard to fixing the road.

  • Tournament in honour of Yekini coming

The Chairman of the League Management Company (LMC), Shehu Dikko, on Monday said the league organising body was very close to the official unveiling of the Rasheed Yekini trophy.

In a statement in Abuja, Dikko said the award would be for the highest goal scorer in the 2014/2015 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

“It is part of the NPFL Awards which the LMC board approved at its meeting in June,’’ he said.

Dikko explained that the decision to name the trophy after one of Nigeria’s most prolific forwards was to immortalise the former Super Eagles forward.

“The award was chosen by the board as a route to immortalise the player who scored a total of 37 goals in 58 appearances for the country and demonstrated exemplary character and commitment throughout his career,’’ he said.

The LMC board chairman said also that there was a broad plan to institute awards and honour outstanding players, officials, key stakeholders and fans in the league.

He said this would be at the end of every season.

“There are a number of factors that led us to reach the decision to name one of these awards, that of the highest goal scorer, after the late Yekini.

“The awards is part of strategic plans of the LMC to create commercial value and additional revenues out of the assets inherent in the league property.

“We considered the aspiration factor which seeks to let the players know that they too can become national heroes if they achieve excellence and make a success of their career.

“It says to them that they too can become legends of the game and the society will honour them as we have sought to honour the late Yekini,’’ Dikko further explained.

The LMC board chairman disclosed that a monetary incentive and other social benefits would be attached to the awards.

“In the case of the highest goal scorer award, we have received a request from the Rasheed Yekini Foundation to provide additional cash support to the winner and we are studying their proposal,’’ he said.

Dikko said also that there were already plans to officially unveil the special trophy for this award at one of the league game venues.

He said the NPFL Awards was a long-term project of the LMC and was open to corporate sponsors in both headline and other supporting categories.

“Some corporate firms are already holding talks with the LMC on their potential participation in the NPFL Awards,’’ the board chairman said.

Yekini started his football career with United Textile Mills Limited (UNTL) FC of Kaduna.

He later teamed up with the then IICC Shooting Stars, now Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan and finally the defunct Abiola Babes FC of Abeokuta.

Yekini then moved to Cote D’Ivoire where he joined Africa Sports, before moving to Europe.

Born on Oct. 23, 1963, the one-time African Footballer of the Year died on May 4, 2012.

  • Utility Pen Boys win Independence Tournament

There was a harvest of goals in the early hours of Tuesday at the Arepo Annual Independence Tournament as The Utility Pen Boys of Journalists Estate subdued their Voera Estate counterparts by three goals to two to win the trophy.

The tournament which usually features all the estates in Arepo saw Journalists Estate facing Voera Estate in what at first looked like a repeat of what played out last year with the Pen Boys lifting the trophy by away goal decision after the 90 minutes ended 2-2.

As defending champions, The Pen Boys stepped into Tuesday’s game with a superior game plan with Ben Alaiya, the Media Officer of the Super Eagles, deploying all the strategies he has learnt from Nigeria coach, Steve Keshi.

However, against the run of play, Voera Estate savoured momentary victory as they capitalised on defensive error to register the first goal of the day.

However, the Pen Boys fought back and secured an equaliser to end the first half one goal apiece.

More pressure from the Pen Boys in the second half paid off as they got two consecutive goals to silence the home crowd.

Although Voera Estate converted one of their free kicks, it was not enough to give them a draw as the visiting team defended their last goal till the final whistle that saw the game ending 3-2 in favour of the Pen Boys of Journalists estate.

Speaking at the post-match conference, the technical adviser of Journalists’ Estate stated that he couldn’t have spent the last two years as the Media Officer of the Super Eagles for nothing.
