Suspected killers of Newswatch editor arrested

OPERATIVES of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Lagos State Police Command, have arrested four of the eight-man armed robbery gang that killed the deputy editor of Daily Newswatch, Mr Toyin Obadina, on February 1.

The journalist was shot dead in the Lucky Fibre Area of Ikorodu at about 1.30 am. His body and vehicle were abandoned at the scene of the incident.

The four suspects are Adeshina Festus, 21; Babatunde Makinde, 25; Sunday Samuel, 22 and Ibrahim Adeokin, 22.

The two suspects now at large, according to police sources, are Ola Sheu and  Omo Alhaja. The remaining two members of the gang were said to have been shot dead during an exchange of fire with the police in another operation.

Items recovered from the suspects are: two locally made single-barrel cut-to-size guns; 12 rounds of live cartridges; one Nissan Xterra Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) marked ISD 780 BJ, and a Toyota Yaris car marked AKD 701 CE.

Parading the suspects yesterday, Commissioner of Police Kayode Aderanti said their arrest came on the heels of a tip the command got about some armed robbers hiding in the Mile 12 area where they were planning to unleash terror on residents.

Based on the information, he said, “a team of crack detectives led by the officer in charge of SARS, Superintendent of Police (SP) Abba Kyari, swung into action and burst the criminals’ hideout in the Ajelogo/Akanimodo area of Mile 12 during which the suspects were arrested.

A search conducted on the suspects, he said, led to the recovery of two locally made single-barrel short guns with 12 rounds of live cartridges.

Aderanti also said that during interrogation, the suspects confessed to belonging to an eight-man gang of armed robbers that had been terrorising the state and its environs.

“They also confessed to being responsible for the killing of the owner of a Toyota Yaris Salon car marked AKD 701 CE which they snatched and later abandoned with the owner’s corpse at Lucky Fibre Area, Ikorodu on February 1, 2014 at about 1.30am and the victim was later discovered to be Mr. Toyin Obadina, Deputy Editor of Daily Newswatch newspaper,” Aderanti said.

The gang, the police chief said, used a Nissan Xterra SUV marked ISD 780 BJ, which it snatched from one Mr. Segun Afolabi to block and rob the late journalist before the gang’s leader, Oke, shot him dead.

Their confession, he said, led detectives to Ikorodu where Adesina Festus and Sunday Samuel (aka Junior Junior) were arrested. He said they confessed to the crime and other robbery operations in and outside Lagos.

Defending himself, Sunday said: “I was inside our operational vehicle when Oke and Benjamin, another member of our gang, went to meet the late editor in his car after we blocked him. Oke was “dragging” with him over what I did not know before Oke shot him dead. We were driving two cars, Sienna and Toyota Camry, which we snatched from other victims. We used one of our cars to block him. I am from Alaka Town in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State. I am a transporter; I stole all my vehicles, which I converted for commercial use.”

Babatunde said: “Our intention was only to collect the man’s (Obadina’s) mobile set, but he was ‘dragging’ with Oke, hence Oke shot him.”

Ibrahim said he was in the car with Adesina when the police arrested him, adding that he did not participate in the operation that led to Obadina’s killing.

Adesina said he was inside their operational car when Oke shot the deputy editor, but confessed that he was the one that blocked his car before he was shot dead.

Aderanti said that the arrest of Obadina’s killers “shows that you can only run when you commit crime but cannot hide from justice, especially within my command.”

He also said investigation was ongoing over the killing The Sun Director, Dimgba Igwe, by a hit-and-run driver. The Commissioner urged the public to give the command information that could lead to the arrest of the culprit.

    Fashola mourns Newswatch man Obadina

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has commiserated with the management and staff of Newswatch on death of the paper’s Deputy Editor, Saturday, Mr. Toyin Obadina.

Obadina was killed at the weekend by some gunmen.

In a statement by his media aide, Mr. Hakeem Bello, Fashola expressed shock at Obadina’s “sudden death.”

He described the deceased as an articulate and brilliant journalist, who has contributed to the development of journalism in the country.

The governor said the late Obadina was cut down in his prime when his “budding professionalism” was about to blossom.

He said Newswatch had lost one of its “top flight editorial team members” and urged the management and staff to take consolation in the fact that the deceased left a legacy of diligence in the workplace.

Fashola said the best way to immortalise the late Obadina was to uphold that legacy.

The late Obadina was shot by suspected robbers on Saturday night on the Itoikin/Old Ijebu-Ode road while driving to his Parafa home in Ikorodu.

  • NUJ condemns Obadina’s killing

The national secretariat and the Lagos state council of the Nigeria Union Journalists  (NUJ)  have condemned the gruesome murder of Deputy Editor, Newswatch on Saturday, Toyin Obadina.
In a statement issued by its National Secretary, Comrade Shuaib Usman Leman, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), said the shooting of Obadina, by armed robbers, leading to his death, “was another sad reminder of the vulnerability of media professionals and this further heightens our concern for the safety of journalists”.

Obadina was shot and fatally wounded by armed robbers last Friday night in Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
“While the NUJ condemns the continued killing of journalists in the country, it is no doubt that Obadina and many other journalists died because the Nigerian system over the years had failed to protect its citizens.
“The death has yet again deprived the media of one of its illustrious journalists and it is very important to call on the Federal Government to take measures for effective protection of journalists because journalists, as the conscience of the nation cannot be subjected to constant fear and intimation by such impunity.
“While we condole with the media family, we pray to God to grant the deceased eternal rest and the family the fortitude to bear the loss”, the statement read.
The Chairman of Lagos NUJ, Deji Elumoye tasked the state government to live up to expectation, wondering what is happening to the billions of naira that has been saved into the state Security Trust Fund.
While appreciating the Babatunde Fashola regime for his steadfastness against crime, Elumoye said there is need to do more in terms of security of lives and property.
“It seems they have gone to sleep, criminals have gradually found their way back into the state. And I wonder what they are doing with billions of naira put in the Security Trust Fund”, Elumoye said.
He also commiserated with Newswatch and Obadina’s family, while praying for the repose of the soul of the dead.

  • Gunmen shoot Daily Newswatch assistant editor

Gunmen yesterday shot an assistant editor of the Daily Newswatch Newspapers, Toyin Obadina, on his way home after production.

Obadina was shot in the stomach along the Itoikin-Old Ijebu-Ode Road at about 1am while driving to his residence in Parafa area of Ikorodu, Lagos.

It was gathered that the assistant Editor of the Saturday title of the paper was waylaid by armed men who double-crossed him with two Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) in his Toyota Yaris car.

Though he reportedly cooperated with them, the armed men shot him twice after dispossessing him of valuables.

His wife, Mrs. Abiola Obadina, said: “When they stopped him, he gave them all the money that he had on him. The thieves double-crossed him when he was coming from work.

“They were riding in two jeeps and they collected everything he had on him but one of them shot him in the belly when they were done with him. He is currently responding to treatment.”

When the Sagamu Divisional Police Officer, S.T. Bernard, was reached, he said he was unaware of the incident.

Also, the Ikorodu Area Commander, Amos Omuiyadun, said the report was yet to reach him.
