    15,000 people from Lagos will benefit from N750 million ‘trader money’ on February 14 as the Lagos State Governor, Mr.  Babajide Sanwo-Olu flags off the financial intervention scheme.

    Speaking on the scheme tagged: ‘Lagos Market Trader Money, during a sensitisation programme on hygiene for 500 market men and women from Ikeja and Oshodi local government areas on Saturday at the Lagos Fresh Food Hub, Idi-Oro, Mushin, the state Commissioner for Agriculture, Abisola Olusanya

     said the flag-off exercise would allow the governor to demonstrate his love for the market men and women on Valentine’s Day.

    “By Wednesday, Valentine’s Day, Mr. Governor is going to be showing love to market traders, men and women in Lagos.

    “He promised them N50,000 per beneficiary for 15,000 people for the Lagos Market Trader Money; he is going to be launching it on that day.

    “It is part of his show of love to say we hear you, we hear your cry, we are all in this together, and we will come out of this better and stronger,” she said.

    On December 18, the governor announced a N750 million financial intervention scheme for Lagos traders.

    Under the scheme, 15,000 traders across all the state’s local government areas – 200 from each LGA – will receive N50,000 each to boost their businesses.

    The governor announced the scheme during the unveiling of the mid-level agro-product hub at Idi-Oro in the Mushin area of the state.

    He said the Commissioner for Agriculture and the local government chairs would meet to map out the modalities for disbursing the fund.

  • Trader remanded in prison over alleged armed robbery

    A Daura Road Chief Magistrates’ Court, Kaduna, on Wednesday ordered the remand of a 25-year-old trader, Shehu Abdulazeez, accused of armed robbery.

    The Magistrate, Abdulkadir Musa, who ordered remand of Abdulazeez in Prison, did not take his plea, but ordered that the case file be taken to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

    The magistrate adjourned the case until Sept. 5.

    The defendant who resides at Barakallahu area of Kaduna, was arraigned on charges bordering on conspiracy, armed robbery and unlawful possession of arms.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Akinga Akila, told the court that the offences were committed on June 12, along Air Force Training School in Kaduna.

    According to the prosecutor, the defendant and his accomplice now at large, robbed one Mrs Lydia John of her Toyota car, valued at N1.8 million at gun point.

    “The complainant was on her way home at exactly 4.00 p.m. along Air Force Training School when the defendant and his other accomplice who were on motorcycle deliberately hit the car from behind.

    “When the complainant stopped the engine of her car to see the damage done to it, they pointed a gun at her and snatched her car,’’ Akila said.

    The prosecutor said that the case was reported at Rigachikun police station before it was transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

    “The police got an information about the defendant whereabout and he was tracked down and arrested, ” he said.

    The offences contravened Section 6 (b) and 1(a)(b) of Robbery and Firearms Act, 2004.

  • Trader, student ‘stab’ hotel manager with broken bottle

    A trader, Ajibade Hammed, and a student, Olajuwon Shittu, were yesterday brought before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stabbing a hotel manager with a broken bottle.

    Police Prosecutor Lucky Ihiehie said Ajibade, 30, and Olajuwon, 27, committed the offence on July 22 at Ifelotudo Street, Ifako.

    Ihiehie said the complainant, Mr Ogunbanewo Olusegun, the Manager of 18 Plus Hotel at Ifelotudo Street, Gbagada, was called to settle a quarrel between a customer and one of his workers.

    He said Ajibade pushed a waiter down and slapped him when he sought to pass in order to serve other customers.

    “The hotel bouncer, Gabriel John, was called in to settle the quarrel before Olajuwon and Ajibade pounced on him and started beating him.

    “The manager came to intervene and Olajuwon broke a bottle and stabbed him on the right shoulder.”

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate E. Kubeinje, granted the men N100,000 bail, with two sureties each in the like sum.

    The case continues on August 22.

  • Trader docked for public disturbance

    A trader, Olu James, 33, who allegedly started a public display that incited disturbance at a market in Lagos was on Thursday arraigned in a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The accused, who resides in Ojuelegba Area of Lagos, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of breach of public peace and assault.

    The prosecutor, Insp Ikechukwu Edumodior, said the action of the accused was intended to prevent customers from going to the shop of the complainant, Chioma Onwuoka.

    Edumodior said the accused had on June 12, at No. 10, Ojuelegba Road, Surulere-Lagos, paraded Onwuoka’s shop and told customers that her curtain fabrics were inferior.

    He also said James assaulted Onwuoka by hitting her with a stool, when she approached the accused, to know why he behaved that way.

    Edumodior explained that when the complainant could no longer take the public display by the accused, she immediately made a report to the police.

    The offences contravene Sections 168 (d) and 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluyemisi Adelaja, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one responsible surety in like sum.

    Adelaja adjourned the case until Aug. 6 for substantive trial.

  • Trader ‘slashes’ landlady with blade

    A 30 -year-old trader, Mariam Amos, was yesterday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly inflicting life threatening injuries on her landlady with a blade.

    According to prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Ezekiel Ayorinde, the accused committed the offence on June 12 at Alakuko, a Lagos suburb.

    He said the accused inflicted deep cuts on her landlady, Mrs Tolani Sholanke because she gave her a quit notice.

    Ayorinde said Sholanke gave the accused a quit notice for allegedly quarrelling with other tenants.

    He said Sholanke reported the case and the accused was arrested.

    Amos pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate B.O Osunsanmi granted the accused N50,000 bail, with two sureties in the like sum.

    She ordered that the sureties must be employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Osunsanmi adjourned till July 18.

  • Trader in court over defilement of 9-year-old girl

    An 18-year-old trader, Lawal Daura, on Tuesday appeared in Daura Road Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna over alleged defilement of a 9-year-old girl.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Hinga Nyimze, told the court that one Tukur Ibrahim reported the case at the Rigasa Police Divisional Headquarters in Kaduna on June 19.

    He said the defendant, a resident of Tukur Ibrahim in Kaduna, committed the offence on June 2 and charged with defilement.

    Nyimze said that the girl was returning home from Islamiya School on June 2, at about 2.00 p.m. when the accused lured her into his room and forcefully had unlawful sexual intercourse with her.

    The prosecutor also told the court that the defendant was arrested after the girl reported the act to her mother, adding that the defendant confessed to the crime during police investigation.

    Nyimze said the offence contravened Section 209 of the Penal Code Laws of Kaduna state 2017.

    The Magistrate, Mr Abdulaziz Ibrahim, ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison, pending advice from the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    The magistrate, who refused to take the plea of the defendant, adjourned the case until Aug. 2, for hearing.

  • Trader faces trial for ‘defiling’ seven-year-old girl

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos yesterday remanded a 22-year-old trader, Moses Austine, in Kirikiri Prisons for allegedly defiling a seven-year-old girl.

    Magistrate B.O. Osunsanmi refused to take the plea of the accused and ordered that he should be kept behind bars pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    Austine, who lives at Itire, Lagos, is being tried for defilement.

    The Police prosecutor, Ezekiel Ayorinde, an Assistant Superintendent (ASP) told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 1 at his residence.

    He alleged that the accused unlawfully had canal knowledge of the girl when he discovered that her mother left for work.

    “The accused called the girl inside his room under the pretext of sending her on an errand. When the girl entered his room, he bolted his door and inserted his sex organ into her private parts and defiled her.

    “The mother of the girl came back from work and saw her daughter crying and she asked her what happened and she told her what the accused did to her.

    “The mother reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested,” the prosecutor said.

    The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Section prescribes life imprisonment for defilement.

    The case continues on July 9.

     

  • Trader held for ‘stealing’ motorcycle

    An Ikeja Magistrates Court yesterday remanded a 26-year-old trader, Musa Mathias, in Kirikiri Prisons for alleged theft of a motorcycle.

    Magistrate A. I. Abina ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison until Monday.

    Mathias, who lives at 5, Jinadu Street, Agege is facing a one-count of stealing contrary to Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Ishola Samuel said the defendant committed the offence on May 3 at 152, Dopemu Road, Agege, Lagos.

    Samuel said the defendant sneaked into the house at night and stole a motorcycle.

    He alleged that the defendant stole a motorcycle marked LAR 494 QC valued at N85,000 belonging to the complainant, Mr Philip Adaji. The machine was parked in the complaint’s compound.

    According to him, Mathias was apprehended by members of a vigilance group.

  • Trader arraigned for over N328,000 fraud

    A 48-year-old trader, Dele Felix, was yesterday arraigned at an Okitipupa Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State for allegedly defrauding Cecelia Azubike of N328,000.

    The accused, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a one-count charge of advance fee fraud.

    Prosecutor Zedekiah Orogbemi told the court that the accused on February 19, about 10:30am, at 40B, Hospital Road, Okitipupa, collected N328,000 from the complainant, on the pretext of helping her to keep the money.

    He said the accused failed to return the money to the complainant on demand.

    Orogbemi said the offence contravened Section 419 of the Criminal Code, Cap.37, Vol.1, Law of Ondo State, 2006.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Banji Ayeomoni granted the accused bail at N500,000 and a surety.

    He said the surety must live in the court’s jurisdiction and present a year tax clearance.

    Ayeomoni adjourned the case till April 30 for further hearing.

  • Trader gets three years for peddling Indian hemp

    A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced a 65-year-old trader, Ogbonnaya Onyenekwe, to three years’ imprisonment for trafficking six kilogrammes of  Indian hemp.

    The convict was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) before Justice Saliu Saidu on a charge of dealing in restricted narcotics.

    The prosecutor, Mr. Jeremiah Aernan, tendered a written statement by the convict, the bulk of drug exhibit, a request for scientific aid form, a drug analysis form and remnants of the restricted substance.

    The court admitted the evidence as exhibits.

    Justice Saidu found the accused guilty and convicted him.

    He said: “The convict is hereby sentenced to a term of three years’ imprisonment, which will start from the date of sentence.”

    The court ordered that the drug substances be returned to the NDLEA for destruction.

    The prosecution told the court that the convict committed the offence on February 13, 2016.

    He said the convict was arrested at Apollo Street, Makoko, Lagos State, with the restricted narcotics, weighing about six kilogrammes.

    Aernan said the offence contravened Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation, 2004.
