  • Truck crushes mother, child to death in Ogun

    Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Spokesman, Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) in Ogun, on Thursday, confirmed an accident that claimed the lives of three in Ogun.

    He said that a Mack truck loaded with soft drinks on Wednesday crushed a woman and her child to death in an accident which also killed the truck’s Motor Boy at Ajibawo in Atan on Sango /Idiroko road, Ogun.

    Akinbiyi told the News Agency of Nigeria that the accident occurred around 5:45pm and was caused by wrongful overtaking, complicated by loss of control by the truck, marked, LSD 563 XW.

    He added that four people were involved in the accident which included three male and one female, saying that two male and one female died in the accident while one person was injured.

    “In the process of overtaking another truck ahead of it loaded with granite, the edge of the truck loaded with soft drinks entered a ditch which results in its fall, killing a woman and her child selling along the road and the motor boy,” he said.

    Akinbiyi said that the injured had been taken to Oluwalogbon Hospital, Atan before the arrival of TRACE officials while the corpses had been claimed by their relatives.

    He urged motorists to always obey traffic rules and regulations and also avoid excessive speeding and wrongful overtaking.

  • Accident: Five die,two injured on Sagamu-Abeokuta expressway

    Five persons have died on Tuesday morning in a road traffic accident when two cars collided with each other at Orire – Imo, Ibafo, stretch of the Abeokuta – Kobape – Sagamu road, Ogun State.

    The accident which occurred around 7:25am involved a Honda car marked  EKY 365 FB and Subaru car with registration number KTU 246 AT, also left two other persons with injuries.
    The Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Traffic and Compliance and Enforcement Corps(TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the accident, attributed the cause to “over speeding and  loss of control which resulted to head on collision.”
    Akinbiyi added that the victims were evacuated to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH).
    He stated: “A Honda with Registration number  EKY 365 FB coming from Abeokuta lost control, veered into the other lane and collided with Subaru car marked  KTU 246 AT, coming towards Abeokuta.
    “Three were initially Injured together with Four Men who died instantly and their bodies have been deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH).
    “However, post crash report indicates that another of the injured victims has also died making the no of the dead to five and the  injured two.
  • TRACE begins 24-hour patrol on expressway

    The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) has embarked on ‘Operation 24- Hour Patrol’ to curb the indiscipline of road users along Sango-Abeokuta Expressway as Julius Berger began construction work on the road.

    Its Owode/Ijako Unit Commander Tope Oseni, while briefing reporters on the road, said the operation would enable the corps checkmate careless motorists and other road users.

    She said: “The operation is imperative following the high rate of crashes along the axis, resulting in the loss of lives and property. She added that special attention would be given to the Owode-Ijako section of the road.

    She said the corps would not spare any recalcitrant motorists, noting that no fewer than four people, including a TRACE operative, have been killed by hit-and run motorists along the section recently.

    “We have received the mandate to check the incessant killing of people by reckless motorists along the Owode-Ijako section of the expressway. This is why we are increasing our patrol to 24 hours.

    “The construction company in charge of this road has indicated its readiness to start construction work without delay.

    “It is part of our mandate to ensure that there is free flow of traffic and  that the workers on the road are not disturbed.

    “So, there is need for motorists to adhere strictly to traffic controllers’ instructions, and the traffic controllers include TRACE, Police and FRSC, just to mention a few.”

    According to her, motorists’ speed limit at this affected portion of the expressway must not exceed between 45 and 50 kilometres to avoid unnecessary loss of lives at this section of the road.

    She implored motorists whose vehicles’ engines develop mechanical faults to inform the traffic agencies to avoid gridlock on the major road.

    The unit commander cautioned motorists to refrain from drinking alcohol while on the wheels, and “I am reminding them that we are still in the raining season and more importantly in ’ember’ months”.

     

  • Road crashes: TRACE set to reduce fatal crashes

    The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) is committed to ensuring reduction in road traffic crashes statistics during this December the Corps’ Commander Ayo Sangofadeji has said.

    He disclosed this while speaking to newsmen on this year accident free day at the Corps’ Headquarters in Abeokuta.

    Sangofadeji said the Corps would intensify efforts on its public enlightenment programmes especially at motor parks across the state and bring erring motorists to book.

    “Our goal this year is to ensure reduction in road traffic accident compared to 2013. We will intensify efforts by way of enlightenment and strong enforcement,” he said.

    He said, the Corps is determined to prove a point to members of the public that ‘Ember’ month does not kill. He noted that what kills is poor driving attitude which needed to be addressed by ensuring total compliance to safety rules and regulations.

    Speaking on the role of passengers, the TRACE chief, advised them to be at alert at all times, watch drivers’ attitude, and manner of driving and report any behavior contrary to safety of lives to the appropriate authority.

    He said: “We have one driver to many passengers in a vehicle; one person should not be allowed to negatively dictate where the journey of the others would end.”
