Creative waste management training for pupils

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has enlightened some pupils on how to engage in creative waste management and recycling.

At a programme themed “Recycling: A secured future for our children”, the agency exposed the pupils on how to identify different categories of waste and means of converting them to useful products.

LAWMA General Manager Wahab Ogunbiyi said waste could be generated in liquid, gaseous or solid form, noting that the solid waste retains its form as it doesn’t decompose.

Speaking on the significance of sorting to recycling, LAWMA Chairman Mr Olumuyiwa Adejokun said it accelerates the process and reduces the stress of separation.

“Once we are able to separate inorganic waste like plastics, cans, nylons from organic waste right from source, then, we find it easy to recycle. So, there is nothing like waste; what you call waste is resources for other products,” he said.

Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on the Environment chairman Saka Fafunmi urged the pupils to position themselves as change agents in their environments.

The Government Technical College Agindigbi, Ikeja came first in the waste recycling exhibition with seats made from disused tyres.

A pupil, Aremu Matthew said: “We see people sitting on the streets with tires and we thought we could make it more comfortable by adding ropes to it.”

Speaking with reporters at his Umuokehi farm residence, the tapper said he has about 100 raffia trees from which he taps wine and that the youths should come for tapping lessons.

Ozoemenam called on the youths of the state to swallow their pride and learn the trade rather than “going everyday to bet to make quick money, engaging in kidnappings and armed robbery”.

He said that it pained him to see the state’s youths on a daily basis arguing at newspaper stands and “wasting the time they would have used to learn one trade or another only to turn around later in life to blame the government for not providing jobs for them”.

The palm wine tapper said that his wine business has helped him to improve himself financially, pointing out that he started life with a bicycle and now owns a tricycle and a piggery which brings in good money for him.

Ozoemenam said, “I want the youths to engage in meaningful ventures and I am willing to teach them how to tap palm wine free of charge for their financial benefits and help them in sustaining their families. Our youths should feel free to engage themselves in agricultural; production either through conventional farming or through poultry or piggery farms or anything other type of farming that would not only keep them busy but also help in the financial output for them and the state.”

  • NDE empowers 430 after skills training in Niger

NDE empowers 430 after skills training in Niger

Four hundred and thirty persons, who received skills training have been empowered by the National Directorate of Employment (NDE).

NDE Acting Director-General, Mr. Kunle Obayan made this known at the resettlement of graduates of the Vocational Skills Development (VSD) programme in Minna, the Niger State capital.

He said the disbursement was in line with the plan to create mass employment for unskilled and unemployed Nigerians by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

Obayan said the desire of the NDE had always been to empower beneficiaries of its skills training programmes. He, however, lamented that this had been limited by the funds available to the directorate each year.

He advised unskilled and unemployed young Nigerians to take advantage of the various programmes of the NDE to exit joblessness, assuring that the directorate would not relent in its efforts to assist young Nigerians to access decent jobs.

The Director-General, New Partnership for Africa Development (NEPAD), Mr. Abdullahi Abubakar, said the empowerment of over 400 persons across the nation by the NDE was a step towards addressing the developmental challenge the nation was facing.

He called on the beneficiaries to use what was given to them judiciously and urged the youth to discover their potentials.

Abubakar said the state government is encouraging youths to go into business ventures as government alone could not provide jobs for all the unemployed youths in the state. He said the state government would roll out its programme for youth empowerment soon.

The beneficiaries were given equipment for welding, electrical engineering, beads making, shoe making, fridge repair works, among others

  • Peace training for students’ leaders

LEAD initiative in collaboration with Human Capital Partners have organised a three-day leadership tournament called Student’s Leadership Development Tournament (SLEDT) for Students’ Union (SU) leaders of higher institutions in Nigeria, with a mission to expose them to international best practices.

The programme also featured training in Agri-business.

At the event, which was hosted by the University of Ibadan, the SU leaders showcased their stewardship using the criteria called VCAPPS, which stands for Vision, Continuity, Accountability, Productivity, Peace and Sustainability and Agri-business.

Titilayo Femi Kings, an internationally certified student’s affairs professional and project director of SLEDT said Students’ Unionism should be encouraged because it helps groom future leaders.

“Existence of Students’ Union government enhances the process of school administration and it usually facilitates effective communication between authorities and the students. Indeed, Students’ Unionism provides opportunities for leadership training for the youths,” he said.

Kings, who is also the Face of Agriculture, Africa,  said the event came out of a vow he made in 1998 during a violent protest by students following the death of M.K.O. Abiola, in which some students died or got injured without achieving meaningful progress.

He said many students are misled to participate in protests that end up being violent.

“Many of those protests could have been resolved without resorting to violence and a lot of lives would have been saved.  Today Students’ leaders are characterized by thuggery, cultism and antisocial behavior which are against the tenets of the founding fathers of Students’ Unionism. This is why we are coming up with a programme that focuses on the Partners In Progress (PIP) strategy, which is the hallmark of the 21st century student leader,” he said.

The tournament has been attended by representatives from schools such as Federal University, Dutse, Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO); Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA); University of Calabar (UNICAL); University of Agriculture, Makurdi (UAM); Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST); Ibrahim Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai; Ambrose Alli University (AAU) Ekpoma; University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID); University of Ilorin (UNILORIN); Uthman Dan Fodio University and Imo State University, Owerri (IMSU).

Kings noted that the schools that attended last year, now called SLEDT certified schools, have remain peaceful for the past one year.

Based on what they learnt, the various SU leaders committed N500,000 from their union account to start farming yam, vegetables, fish and poultry.

They asked for government’s help and support in making their vision a reality.

At the conclusion of the competition, Imo State University, Owerri emerged tops, while FUTO and IBBU were the first and second runners up.
