Babatunde Michael not carried away by transfer talks

Nigeria forward Babatunde Michael scored a goal and provided an assist for Ukrainian club Volyn in a 3-1 win at Olimpik Donetsk Saturday and after which he insisted he will not lose focus because of speculations about his future.

“I am not distracted for any reasons, there are lots of things to prove than bothering myself with transfer speculations which is normal in football,” Babatunde told AfricanFootball.com.

The 22-year-old Babatunde, who was a star for Nigeria at last year’s World Cup in Brazil, scored a goal in the 72nd minute to restore his side’s lead at 2-1, after he assisted Bicfalvi in the 23rd minute for the opener.

He told AfricanFootball.com he is happy to get another goal after he scored his first in Volyn’s 4-2 win over Hoverla Uzhhorod last weekend.

“This is absolutely not my best but a tip of the iceberg. I know what it is at stake and I have every reason to keep the performance alive,” he said.

“Two goals is not enough for me to rate my form, it is a gradual thing, looking back, I think I have not done enough yet. But I believe I am poised to make up for lost time.

“Yes, I am very happy to score another goal, it is not me but God. Of course, I want to capitalise on the tempo and keep working hard in training. I have a lot of things in mind but I think this is just one of it, to keep fit and work hard on a daily basis. And I think it is really working for me and the team.

“I think scoring more goals will give me a better chance to improve in the next game but my team victory is a big priority for me and for all the players.”

Volyn now have 33 points from 25 games to be sixth on the league table.

Fellow Nigerian, Sherif Isa, was in action for Olimpik Donetsk for 68 minutes before he was substituted by Aleksandr Sytnyk.

Court confirms transfer of Nyako’s suit before judgment

    •Judge fixes fresh hearing date

The Federal High Court has confirmed the transfer of a suit filed by former Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako at the Yola division of the court to a new judge in Bauchi division.

The transfer, now being queried by Nyako, is coming few weeks after the case file was retrieved by the court’s Chief Judge, Justice Ibrahim Auta, from the earlier trial judge, Justice Bilikisu Aliyu, who had scheduled judgment in the case for February 12.

The Nation had reported last week that the case was transferred out of the Yola division, where Justice Aliyu had planned to deliver judgment before Justice Auta called for the file.

Although no official of the court, including the Chief Registrar, Mrs. Rosemary Dugbo-Oghoghorie, was willing to comment on the new development in the case, it was learnt from a fresh hearing notice sent to parties that the case has actually been moved to Bauchi.

The new judge to whom the case is assigned at the Bauchi division, Justice M.G Umar, has scheduled hearing for March 17.

It is, however, not clear what direction the proceedings will take before the new judge. It is equally not known whether the new judge will commence hearing afresh, after the judgment earlier fixed for February 12 was aborted, or he will proceed to deliver the judgment prepared by the earlier trial judge.

Nyako had initiated the suit to challenge the process leading to his impeachment last year.

The suit, a fundamental rights enforcement case, with the Adamawa State House of Assembly & others as defendants, was one of two suits filed by the governor shortly after he was impeached.

Nyako had, in the fundamental rights enforcement suit, filed in November 2014, alleged that he was denied fair hearing by the impeachment panel, which recommended to the House of Assembly that he should be removed from office.

The trial judge in Yola concluded hearing in the fundamental rights enforcement suit and adjourned to February 12, 2015. Before the date scheduled for judgment, the court’ chief judge called for the file on the ground that a petition was written against the trial judge by the Chief Judge of Adamawa State, Justice Ishaya Banu, through his lawyer, Festus Keyamo.

Nyako protested Justice Auta’s action in a February 2015 petition to the National Judicial Council (NJC), accusing him of seizing the case file and “thereby forestalling the delivery of the court judgment slated for February 12, 2015.”

The Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court, on February 18, denied Nyako’s allegation.

She said the court’s chief judge called for the case file to enable him address a petition dated February 3, 2014 written to his office by Keyamo on behalf of the Chief Judge of Adamawa State.

Keyamo was also the lawyer to the current Adamawa State Governor, Bala Ngilari (who was the deputy governor under Nyako), when he fought his way back to power via a suit at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Nyako’s lawyer and media aide Olukoya Ogungbeje and Ahmad Sajoh said in the petition to the NJC that “on the day the judgment was to be delivered, the judge was not around.  No prior information that the court would not sit and no new date was fixed.  We got information that it was the CJ that called for the file.

“As we speak to you, the file remains with the CJ. Whose interest is he protecting? We want Justice Auta to tell the whole world why he has not sent the file back to Federal High Court, Yola.”

Ogungbeje said the former governor also sought the probe of the Chief Judge of the Adamawa State, for showing questionable interest in the case.

“The Chief Judge of Adamawa State, Justice Ishaya Banu, is hearing a different case filed by Admiral Murtala Nyako to challenge his impeachment procedure. Justice Banu has refused to hear the suit.

“What is the interest of a chief judge in a suit involving politicians?  He filed an application to join the suit before Justice Bilikisu Aliyu and the judge dismissed the application. As if that was not enough, Justice Banu promptly appealed the judgment. The chief judge has decided to join the foray of litigation.”

Meanwhile, the Court of Appeal, Abuja will on March 10 rule on the application by the Adamawa State Chief Judge for the abridgement of time within which to compile records at the trial court and  to also stay proceedings at the lower court pending the determination of his appeal.

The Adamawa Chief Judge is appealing the ruling by Justice Aliyu, refusing his application to be joined as a party in Nyako’s fundamental rights enforcement suit, now transferred to Bauchi.

NFF probes ‘shameful’ Eduok transfer mess

NFF president Amaju Pinnick has declared the board will probe the controversies surrounding the transfer of Dolphins and Super Eagles’ striker Emem Eduok.

“Look at the cloud of controversy over the transfer of one of our brightest stars, Emem Eduok. That is a shame and should not happen. We will investigate this matter and come up with recommendations. Whoever is found culpable will have questions to answer,” Amaju said.

And as the controversy surrounding the future of Nigeria ‘B’ international Emem Eduok rages, he has come out to deny ever playing for a team called A and B Academy, who the Norwegian team Sarsborg 08 claimed they discussed the player’s transfer with.

The Dolphins hitman, who netted 20 goals last season in the Nigeria league, told Laurasboxx.com that he signed initially for the Norwegian team, before he opted to sign for Esperance after he discovered the team failed to contact Dolphins.

“I initially signed for Sarpsborg and I thought they had contacted Dolphin which they didn’t. I did not play for any academy called “A and B”,” he said.

“I’m a Dolphins player. I have signed for Esperance of Tunisia and will be unveiled after my international duty with Nigeria.”

  • ‘Learning transfer can help education develop faster’

The transfer of learning can help Nigeria develop faster, says Mrs Modupe Oyekunle, Cheif Executive Officer (CEO) of Masters Resource Development Centre (MRDC), an organisation that helps youths to develop entrepreneurial skills.

Mrs Oyekunle, who was the guest speaker at the 14th induction of the Nigeria Institute of Training and Development (NITAD), in Ikeja, Lagos, said the lack of transfer of learning, which promotes continuity, was the bane of development in Nigeria.

Speaking on the theme: ‘The transfer of learning’, she said: “Critically, you can maximise the transfer of learning by ensuring individual personality, characteristic and motivation. Our programme design should be tight enough and our work environment must be okay. In Nigeria, we have it all but we lack continuity and applicative measures.  If we can help the Aba people, the industrialisation of this country will be critical in the business level.

“Learning is achieved in repetition, the more you read the more you achieve. In the educational level, outside the country, they value their education due to the transfer of knowledge but here, we are not taught to read continuously but to cram.”

The President/Chairman of Council, NITAD, Dr. Kayode Ogungbuyi, congratulated the inductees, assuring them that the institute was making efforts to become chartered and get international accreditation to certify trainers and consultants.

In an interview with journalists, he counselled Nigerians not to wait for the government before achieving their goals, saying anyone who waits for encouragement from the government will not achieve anything.

“We, at NITAD, don’t want any encouragement from the government. If you are waiting for the government to encourage you to do what you should do, you can’t reach anywhere. How was Ebola controlled in Nigeria? What support did the government give at the end of the day?

“People had already being doing what they should do before the government intervened.  Adedavoh gave her life and the government did not even recognise her. Rather, you find people involved in one crime or the other been given honours. So, it is left for you and me to know what we need to do for us to get what we want based on our believe.” he said.

  • Nigerians transfer N80b daily, says Dozie

Nigerians transfer N80b daily, says Dozie

Over N80 billion is electronically transferred daily from one bank account to the other in Nigeria, the Group Managing Director/CEO of Diamond Bank, Uzoma Dozie, has said.

Speaking on ‘Media Trends in Business and Big Data Management’ at the Society and Technology Conference and Exhibition 2014, in Lagos yesterday, Dozie said, in compliance with global financial trends and the Cash-Less policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) which is aimed at driving financial inclusion and reduce cash-based transactions in the economy, electronic payment has created a new order in financial transactions, allowing Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) the opportunity to create financial products and services that are customer-centric.

He explained e-money is virtually stored monetary value in wallets or accounts, noting that the platform allows the account holder to access the value of the money with ease, exchange and transfer electronically for business transactions and sundry payments.

He said: “The financial industry has moved through various stages, at the moment value is being stored virtually. Customers have come to the realisation of the ease associated with e-money.”

He said Diamond Bank has risen to the challenge of the new order of electronic banking through the development of unique products, like BETA, a product which incorporates the traditional method of savings in an account with low minimum account balance, low fees, that bear interest and customers have access to their funds through multiple channels, and Diamond Y’ello Account, a product that enables MTN subscribers to open and operate from their phones.

  • Will: Judge okays transfer of case file

Justice Olajumoke Emeya of a Lagos High Court, Ikeja has ordered the defendants in a suit contesting the Will of the late Madam Isabella K. Akinhanmi, to apply for the transfer of the case file and exhibits to the Court of Appeal.

The judge gave the order  after quashing an earlier application filed by the defendants, seeking to stay execution of a court’s ruling on the matter.

The defendants in the suit are Akinhanmi, representative of the family of the late Pa Joshua Akinhanmi family; the Probate Registrar; administratotrs of the estate of Pa Akinhanmi;  Incorpotarted  trustees of the First Anglican Mission and the  Adninistrator general of Lagos state.

The claimants, John Babatunde Alani Soluade and Funmilayo Akinbayo (nee Joaquim) had approached the court, by an amended general form of writ of summons and  an amended statement of claim dated March 30, 2010 seeking a court declaration that the Will of late madam Akinhanmi dated July 9, 1984 and prepared by Abiola A. Oshodi be regarded as her last Will and testament and for the court to recognise them and three others as beneficiaries of the estate of the deceased, in particular, the property at 174 and 186 Murtala Muhammed Way, Ebute Metta.

They had also sought a perpetual injunction restraining the first and third defendants as administrator de son tort their agents, caretakers, privies, successors in title or assigns or whatsoever from collecting rents, annuity, royalty or any form of revenue whatsoever from or ejecting tenants or managing, controlling or interfering in any form or manner with the management of the Ebute Metta property or constituting themselves as beneficiaries of the deceased estate among other prayers.

In her ruling on March 7, Justice Emeya not only granted the claimants prayers, but also awarded N25,000 costs against the defendants.

She had also ruled that the first defendant has no title or interest whatsoever to the estate of the deceased at 174 and 186, Murtala Muhammed Way, Ebute Metta and to render account of management of the two properties to the Administrator General of Lagos State pending probate.

At the resumed hearing of the matter, counsel to the first defendant, Rotimi Omolesi sought to withdraw  the application for stay of execution of the ruling pointing out that it has been overtaken by events.

Omolesi said his client has entered into appeal and that the court can no longer entertain the matter in view of the development.

He, therefore, appealed that the case file and all related evidences and exhibits be transferred to the Court of Appeal in line with Order 4 Rule 10 and 11 of the Court of Appeal Rule.

Counsel to the claimants  O. O. Adeleke objected to the request and insisted that  they were in court to argue against the application for stay of execution of the ruling of the court filed by the defendants.

She said the fact that an appeal had been entered into by the defendants should not lead to stay of execution of the ruling of the court.

Adeleke said they were not aware of the decision of the defendants appealing the ruling of the court and insisted on cost if the court was no longer going to hear the application for stay of its ruling.

She argued that the defendants had enough time to inform the claimants of its intention but failed to do so.

But Omolesi countered her and said that their application was filed within record time and that two adjournments the matter suffered after it was filed was not at their instance but that of the court.

Justice Emeya over ruled the claimants request for cost and stated that the request for transfer of the case file to Court of Appeal can not be made through oral application on the floor of the court.

The trial judge agreed with the defendants on their right to appeal but directed their counsel to file a formal application for the transfer of the case file, evidences and exhibits for proper documentation.
