    Transformer vandal injured in Abuja

    The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed that a suspected vandal, Mr. Muktar Rabiu, has suffered injuries while attempting to steal components from a transformer.

    In a statement yesterday, Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Josephine Adeh, said Mr. Rabiu, who had previously been arrested for stealing high-voltage cables, was given a light sentence of community service and 42 strokes of cane. Despite this, he returned to his criminal activities.

    During his latest attempt to tamper with a transformer, he suffered severe injuries.

    He is receiving medical treatment and will face fresh charges once he recovers, according to the statement.

    The FCT Police Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding critical infrastructure and warned against illegal activities targeting public utilities.

    Authorities urged residents to report any suspicious behavior to ensure community safety and protect essential infrastructure.

    Adeh said: “In a striking incident that underscores the ongoing battle against vandalism in the Federal Capital Territory, the FCT Police apprehended a suspect, Muktar Rabiu, during a routine patrol on Christ the King Road in Gwagwalada on 21/11/24. Mr. Rabiu was found in possession of high-voltage electricity cables, which authorities believe were stolen from the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).

    A Junior Secondary School (JSS) pupil of Commercial Secondary School, Sunday Adegbolu, has escaped death by the whiskers while attempting to vandalise a transformer at Owo, Owo Local Government Area.

    Adegbolu, aged 17, was burnt when electricity was restored.

    His accomplices and sponsor took him to three hospitals to evade arrest.They took him out of Ondo State to kill him but Amotekun operatives caught up with them and arrested Adegbolu.

    Commander of Ondo Amotekun Corp, Adetunji Adeleye said a lot of money was spent on reviving Adegbolu due to the severe burns on parts of his body.

    Adeleye spoke while parading 45 suspects arrested for various crimes ranging from kidnapping, vandalism, armed robbery, stealing amongst others.

    He said the suspects were arrested within the last two weeks of constant patrol across the state.

    Adeleye said: “We have a set of criminals that engage in vandalism, especially transformers. One of them was unlucky. Power was restored and burnt half of his body. He was to be killed so that he would not reveal his sponsor. We spent lots of money to make him come back to life. He told us there were nine others, including their godfather. He was among the locals recruited to join the gang.”

    Adeleye said one Jibril, who is facing charges of kidnapping, was arrested for plotting to kidnap another three persons.

    He said the state government was resolute his promise to guarantee safety of lives and property.

    Adegbolu, who confessed to the crime, named one Abubakar as their sponsor.

    He said he was promised N25,000.
