Oyo govt, firm take delivery of 11 transformers for communities

In a bid to ensure even distribution of power across Ibadan, the infrastructure partner of Oyo State Government, Allianz West Africa, said it has taken delivery of 10 units of 500kva distribution transformers and one unit of 5MVA power transformer for the Yekini Adeojo and Senator Rashidi Ladoja GRAs, Ibadan.

The Managing Director, Allianz WA, Yinka Owodunni, an engineer; said the purchase carried out on a Public Private Partnership was supervised by Oyo State Investment and Public Private Partnership Agency – OYSIPA.

He said the transformers, which will power over 2,000 households at Yekini Adeojo and Senator Rashidi Ladojo GRAs, arrived from Istanbul, Turkey via Tin Can Island Port, Lagos to Ibadan on Saturday.

This development, according to him, is a “testament that PPP Always Wins and is a profitable strategy for the government to fast-track infrastructural development.”

He hailed Oyo State Government through OYSIPA for its continued support for PPP initiatives in the state, over the years.

Owodunni said OYSIPA played a key role in ensuring success of the housing project at the New Town Development Area.

He said the transformers delivered were valued at about N600million

He added that the power distribution infrastructure was designed to Power the New Town Development Area (NTDA), created by Governor Seyi Makinde within the SouthEast Corridor of the new and ongoing Ibadan Circular Road (ICR).

He said the circular road is akin to the Lekki-Epe Expressway and will act as the backbone and pedestal infrastructure for heralding in about N4trillion economic inflows into Ibadan over the next few decades.

He said the mega infrastructure would attract investors and more infrastructure solutions, praising the tenacity of the Governor Makinde administration in ensuring that the NorthEast and SouthEast Quadrants of the Ibadan Circular Road is 100 per cent completed during his tenure.

Owodunni said: “This Power & Distributive Transformers will cater for about 2,000 family units that will populate this New Town (NTDA).

“About 1,000 streetlights will be activated to further illuminate the aerial space within this NTDA, further complementing the GSM Light-Up Ibadan Project.”

  • ‘Warn your wards to stay away from transformers’

Executive Chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Authority (LCDA) Kayode Omiyale has advised community leaders to warm their children to stay away from transformers.

Omiyale, who spoke during the presentation of a 500KVA Transformer to Apollo Community in Makoko, Yaba, said youths in communities have cultivated the idea of tampering with transformers when it appears that something went wrong with it.

“When you notice any fault in the transformer, contact the relevant agency responsible for effecting repairs. Resulting to self-help will endanger the transformer and shorten its lifespan. This is a new transformer purchased by the council despite the fact that PHCN has been privatised to individuals that are supposed to provide these facilities. I know that Apollo Community has not had electricity for more than two years now, and as a responsible government, we cannot wait for the relevant agency to provide the transformer forever.

“Allow only experts to handle the transformer; desist from changing lines, stay on your line until the company restores power. Do not overload a particular line for whatever reason.”

The Baale of Apollo, Chief Ibrahim Aladetan, thanked the council for coming to their aid, especially during the yuletide.

  • Fed Govt advises NEMSA on meters, transformers

The Ministry of Power, Works and Housing yesterday directed the Nigeria Electricity Management Service Agency (NEMSA) to encourage the electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to provide innovative meters to their customers.

It urged the DisCos to go beyond the former ways of providing meters, stressing that there must meters that meet the present day technical reality.

The Permanent Secretary, Dr. Louis Edozein, who represented the Minister, Babatunde Fashola at the second NEMSA stakeholders forum in Abuja, said power generation and transmission had improved significantly but the distribution chain of the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry was yet to meet up with the available capacities.

He urged the DisCos to accelerate the roll out of meters to their customers, who were already agitating against crazy estimated billings owing to lack of meters.

According to him, the ministry and the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission  (NERC) promulgated the Meter Assets Provider (MAP) regulation to tackle the challenges of metering.

The last census that the commission conducted, according to him, showed that there were over 12million consumers in the industry, and most of them had no meters.

He said: “There are two shortcomings that we have observed. The first one is meters, I am sure we all know that customers all over the country are agitating because when they get bills and it is not measured. This is why the ministry has been questioning the DisCos. Please accelerate your meter roll out.

“That is why the ministry worked with the regulator to promulgate the MAP Regulation in order to meter the consumers in the market.”

According to him, there were new technology of quickly rolling out meters.

Fashola said: “NEMSA, this is where you have to be more creative and innovative. There are new technologies emerging for roll out of 33Kv infrastructure, and 11Kv infrastructure cheaper. There are new storage technologies; the utilisation of capacitors. I want to challenge NEMSA, encourage the operators… to innovate, create, that is the way you will grow this industry and satisfy our customers better.”

Earlier, the NEMSA Managing Director, Engr. Peter Ewesor, said what contributed to poor power supply and electric accidents in the country included the poor state of distribution network.

  • Delta communities get transformers after years in darkness

Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta Chairman Mr Tega Onoyake, has provided Ugborikoko and Urhumarho communities with 500KVA transformer each.

Inaugurating the projects yesterday in Effurun, Onoyake said they would help to galvanise economic development in the communities that had been in without light for two years.

The chairman said the initiative was part of his campaign promises.

“Recall that I came with the mind-sets of restoring the lost glory of Uvwie and heralding a new dawn in the local government area. I am happy that by the grace of the Almighty God, barely seven months in government, we have accomplished this great feat. With the installation of the transformer, life has been restored and businesses will begin to boom again. The inauguration commissioning has also given me the opportunity to reaffirm my commitment to pursuing my restoration agenda,” he said.

Onoyake urged the communities to ensure proper maintenance of the transformers and promised to provide more dividends of democracy to the people.

He also promised to ensure security of lives and property in his area.

  • Fed Govt to install 150, 100KVA transformers in Ariaria market

Minister of Works, Housing and Power Babatunde Fashola (SAN) has said the Ariaria Market rural electrification power project will include 150 and 100KVA transformers.

The minister said the project, which will provide electricity to 37,000 shops in the first phase and 50,000 shops in the second phase, will directly impact the lives of about 100,000 people in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State.

Fashola spoke yesterday in Aba while inspecting projects in the Southeast.

The minister said Ariaria Market was spending over N7 million daily on generators, adding that investors said they could do same for less.

He said: “The first point I want to emphasise is that as it has been said in some places that it is difficult to provide service because the concentration creates a problem or because the Federal Government has control, but Ariaria is an example of what true public service commitment can deliver. President Muhammadu Buhari recognises the need to recognise made-in-Nigeria projects.

“You will see the installation of a distribution line that was not there before, the installation of transformation that was not there before because those two officers who exercise authority at state and national levels can work together. Investors have taken a position. So, there is not a kobo of government money in this undertaking to provide electricity in the first phase for 37,000 shops and in the second phase for 50,000 shops.

“You will see the design is to install 150, 100KVA transformers. It will provide an example for the distribution companies (DISCOS) about the kind of installations that meet the national standard.

“You can see from some traders who said they now enjoy more electricity than before: small installations, like these, can impact many more people. If you look at 37,000 shops, where each shop has about three to four people and multiply the impact, we are talking about over 100,000 people who are impacted because there is partnership between the state and the Federal Government. There is a policy that seeks to decentralise access to power and allow investors to come in.

“The final leg now is for the regulator to issue the licence for these investors so that their bankers will feel confident that their investment is in the right place. This market is spending over N7 million daily, paying for generators and the investors are saying we can do the same thing for less.

“This is where we think the power of small businesses, the capacity of made-in-Nigeria can be unleashed.”

  • Council chair donates transformers to communities

The Chairman of Ohaozara Local Government of Ebonyi State, Mrs. Nkechinyere Iyioku, has donated 300 KVA transformer each to three communities.

They are Uburu, Okposi and Ugwulanugwu.

She made the donation yesterday at the local government secretariat.

Iyioku said the gesture was the council’s way of complementing the effort of the governor’s wife, Mrs. Rachael Umahi, in transforming indigent people’s lives.

She said the transformers would boost socio-economic activities.

“I was motivated by the widow’s plight. She has been squatting with relatives following her house, which collapsed.

“I also donated to emulate the leadership style of the governor and his wife, especially in uplifting people’s lives,’’ Iyioku said.

The National Vice Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Southeast, Mr. Austin Umahi, hailed the governor’s wife for laying a good foundation for women’s participation in politics.

While Ogbodo was accused of buying and receiving one transformer at N1 million, Gregory was said to have alleggedly bought and received two of the stolen transformers at N1.5m. When the matter came up for hearing, the Counsel to the second, third, and fourth respondents, Gabriel Onyibe appealed to the course to grant them bail on lenient terms as they were well known citizens of the community. But the prosecutor, Kenneth Adokeme opposed the bail appeal for the second respondent. He also asked the court not to grant bail to Mr Alromi who did not have a counsel.

Adokeme, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, alleged that the Lebanese was an illegal alien who entered the country without proper documentation. He further alleged that Alromi have perfected plans to jump bail by leaving the country immediately he is granted bail. The prosecutor further alleged that the first accussed person, have also obtained money amounting to over N3 million from people through pretense and was set to be arraigned in another court. • NERC to customers: get DisCos’ approval before buying transformers

NERC to customers: get DisCos’ approval before buying transformers

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has warned individuals and organisations against buying and installing transformers  without the approval of the power distribution company (DisCo) that supervises the community, its Head, Consumer Affairs Division, Hardley Jack, has said.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum in Lagos, he said it was wrong for anybody to bypass the laws guiding the operation of the sector as contained in the Act for the privatisation of the power sector by the government.

He said the sector may be facing problems such as metering, transformers, and other key components, but it did not give customers the right to do whatever they like.

He said there are laws, which NERC, the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Bulk Trading Company (NBET), the power generation companies (GenCos), electricity distribution companies and other critical stakeholders in the value chain must comply with for the growth of the sector, adding that actions that are contrary to this, amount to disobedience.

He said the DisCos can solve the metering problems as they affect them directly. He, however, said that gas, power generation and others should be jointly addressed by the stakeholders.

He said the Commission is flooded with complaints from the customers, just as the DisCos are battling with the same complaints. According to him, DisCos and the customers need to work together to solve problems as partners.

The Chairman, MEMCOL Nigeria Limited, Mr. Kola Balogun, said the issue of provision of meters can be addressed if stakeholders in the industry are committed to do so. He said the dependence on foreign meter producers by the power firms makes it difficult for many consumers to get meters.

  • Taraba councils get 300KV transformers

The Darius Ishaku administration is providing 300kv electricity transformers to the various wards of the 16 local government areas. At least six local councils including Ardo-Kola, Takum, Jalingo and Zing have gotten transformers. The transformer for Zing was provided at the Ministry of Rural Development penultimate week.

Rural Development Commissioner, Alexander Markus Senlo, in a brief ceremony, handed the transformer to the House of Assembly member representing Zing constituency, John Kizito Bonzena, who handed it over to the councilor representing Zing B Ward, Danjuma Shakuramo.

Shakuramo chairs a committee set to “jealously” guide the transformer against vandalism.

“Today, one of Governor Ishaku’s promises has been fulfilled,” Senlo said. He added that the administration has done a lot in the local councils, especially in rural electrification, despite meager resources.

It was gathered that the rural electrification in Yikwa, Zing local government has neared completion and is connected to national grid.

The Assembly member Bonzena explained that, upon proposals by the rural communities sent to the House, they were able to build it in the State’s budget. They lobbied and ensured the rural people now enjoy government presence; enjoy light and other dividends of democracy.

Apart from Zing, a 7.5 KVA injection substation project has been built in Donga council, almost complete.

In the State capital Jalingo, a hitherto abandoned rural electrification project in Gidin Dorowa has been resuscitated.

Two sub-stations for the evacuation of power from the Kashimbilla Dam through Takum, Wukari and Mutum-Biyu to Jalingo is in progress.

The locals have expressed satisfaction on the rural electrification projects.

Work on the second phase of the Tunga Dam at Kakara which supplies power to the Highland Tea company has commenced.

Governor Darius Ishaku has said “concrete collaborative steps” are being taken by State and federal government to resume work on the Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project in Sardauna local government area.

When completed, the Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Dam will generate about 3050 megawatts electricity that will light and open up the State and boost tourism.
