    Troops, ISWAP in bloody Borno battle

    There was a fierce battle at the weekend between troops of Operation Hadin Kai and terrorists of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

    The terrorists reportedly ambushed the troops in Sabon Gari, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State, leading to a two-hour gun battle.

    The terrorists were reported to have recorded significant casualties following horrendous airstrikes from the air component of Operation Hadin Kai.

    It was learnt that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) component of Operation Hadin Kai conducted targeted airstrikes on ISWAP strongholds within the Timbuktu Triangle, a critical area in Borno State known for its difficult terrain and strategic importance to the insurgents.

    The precision airstrikes dismantled several ISWAP positions and disrupted their operational capabilities.

    A significant number of terrorists were reportedly neutralised during the operation.

    Airstrikes were carried out against Boko Haram factions in the Gwoza axis of the Mandara Mountain range, it was learnt.

    The offensive targeted insurgents loyal to Ali Ngulde, a key Boko Haram commander, as part of ongoing efforts to weaken terrorist networks in the region.

    Defence Headquarters spokesman Major General Edward Buba confirmed the attack but gave no casualty figures.

    “It is confirmed that troops suffered setbacks in operations in the area.

    “An inquiry has been set up to confirm the details of what transpired, after which I will provide the details in due course,” he said.

    Troops on operation across the country killed 10,937 terrorists, including over one thousand of their commanders and leaders and rescued 7,063 kidnap victims in 2024.

    The troops also arrested 12,538 criminals, while 16,171 terrorists and their families surrendered.

    The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj-Gen Edward Buba, disclosed this on Tuesday while reeling-out the military’s successes in the past year.

    Some of the terrorists leaders/commanders killed during troops’ offensives in 2024, according to Gen. Buba were Dutse Mainasara Idda, Mallam Saleh Umaru, Mohammed Amadu, Chinemerem (aka Bam Bam), Jeremiah Uzuoma (aka Escoba), Tochukwu Awo (aka Ojoto) and Egwuatu, amongst others.

    He said troops recovered 8,815 weapons, 228,004 ammunitions trook terrorists and other non-state actors in the past year.

    The weapons seized, according to the defence spokesman, were 4,332 AK47 rifles, 1,244 locally fabricated guns, 838 dane guns, 259 pump action guns, and 2,131 assorted arms.

    He said the ammunition recovered included 128,496 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 45,445 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, 5,103 cartridges, and 29,176 assorted ammunitions.

    Giving an update on the feats recorded in the Niger Delta region, Gen. Buba said troops recovered 56,223,002 litres of stolen crude, 9,735,836 litres of illegally refined diesel, 95,595 litres of Kerosene and 156,527 litres of petrol which worth an estimated sum over N68 billion.

    He said: “Many of what was witnessed in the outgoing year, are indicative of a major defeat of the terrorist in 2024. 

    “Importantly, troops in the battlefield are in high spirits, fully committed, devoted and believe in the just of the cause.

    “Troops will be going the extra mile in the new year to get the job done. Troops are focussed on increasingly deliver tangible benefits of their operations for the benefits of citizens. 

    “Additionally troops seek to continue to heighten collaboration with neighbouring countries and regional bodies in order to tackle the menace of terrorism.”

    Troops on operation across the country have killed 148 terrorists and arrested 258 criminals including two weapons carriers.

     The weapon carriers identified as Danweri and Abubakar Hamza were arrested in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

     The Director of Defence Media Operations Maj-Gen Edward Buba announced this in a statement yesterday.

     Gen. Buba said troops rescued kidnap victims and recovered 146 weapons and 2,599 bullets.

     He said: “The breakdown is as follows: 2 PKT guns, 72 AK47 rifles, 33 fabricated rifles, 28 Dane guns, 2 locally made SMG, 3 locally made pistols, 2 pump action guns, one RPG bomb, one RPG tube, 39 magazines.

     “Others are 1,596 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 636 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, 111 rounds of 7.62 x 51mm ammo, 114 rounds of 7.62 x 54mm ammo, 25 rounds of 9mm ammo, 98 live cartridges, 3 baofeng radios, three vehicles, 36 motorcycles, 40 mobile phones and the sum of N1,838,000.00 among other items.”

     According to the defence spokesman, troops in the Niger Delta area destroyed 66 illegal refining sites and arrested 51 oil thieves.

     He said troops recovered 657,470 litres of stolen crude, 127,870 litres of illegally refined diesel and 5,000 litres of kerosene worth about 800 million naira.

     “Other items discovered and destroyed are 68 crude oil cooking ovens, 13 dugout pits, 41 boats, 45 storage tanks, four speed boats, one pumping machine, 150 drums, one generator, two motorcycles, two mobile phones, one drone and five vehicles among others,” Gen. Buba said.

    Troops neutralise bandits’ kingpin, others in Zamfara 

     Troops of 1 Brigade in Sector 2 Joint Task Force North West, Operation Fansan Yamma, have neutralised several terrorists, including a notorious kingpin known as Alhaji Ma’oli in Zamfara.

    This is contained in a statement issued in Gusau on Friday by the Coordinator Joint Media Coordination Centre Operation Fansan Yamma, Lt. Col. Abdullahi Abdullahi.

    According to the statement, the operation took place on Dec. 26,  in Maisheka village, near Kunchin Kalgo town in Tsafe Local Government Area of the state..

    “The area is one of the local communities that had suffered under Ma’oli’s reign of terror.

    “Ma’oli is renowned for always imposing illegal levies on residents of Unguwan Rogo, Mai Sheka, Magazawa, and other surrounding areas of Bilbis in Tsafe LGA of Zamfara State.

    “The naturalization of Ma’oli has brought relief and excitement to locals in Bilbis general area,” Abdullahi said.

    “The operation was initiated in response to intelligence report of terrorists on motorcycles operating in Bilbis axis of Bilbis District, Tsafe LGA,” the statement added.

    “Swift response by troops of Operation  Fansan  Yamma not only thwarted the terrorists’ plan to attack the locals but also reinforced the commitment to securing the area from further acts of violence.

    “The operation Fansan Yamma remains resolute in its mandate to pursue and neutralise all remaining terrorists and their collaborators across the Joint Task Force Theatre of Operation.

    “The Joint Task Force will also continue to work diligently alongside local communities towards achieving lasting peace and security in Zamfara and beyond,” the statement explained.

    Troops neutralise 13 IPOB members, nab 3 kidnappers, recover firearms in S/East

    Troops of Joint Task Force South-East, “Operation UDO KA” have neutralised 13 armed members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and nabbed three kidnappers in South-East.

    The Spokesman of the task force,  Lt.-Col. Jonah Unuakhalu, made this known in a statement on Monday in Enugu.

    He said that the feat was in furtherance of the troops clearance operations to make the South-East safe and peaceful throughout the yuletide.

    Unuakhalu said that the Force Commander, Maj.-Gen. Hassan Dada, had called on all well-meaning citizens to continue to support the joint task force.

    He said that citizens of the South-East can do this by providing timely, reliable and credible information.

    “Remember, security is everybody’s business. It is not in the hands of security agencies alone.

    “When you see something, say something by calling the JTF Operation UDO KA’s toll free line -193 and press Option 2 – to speak directly to Headquarters Operation UDO KA,” he said.

    On operational details, Unuakhalu said that troops of Sector 1 of the task force on Dec. 21, conducted an ambush operation along Amouka-Umouka Road in 9th Mile, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State to deny kidnappers freedom of action.

    According to him, during the operation, troops came in contact with the kidnappers and in the ensuing firefight, the troops neutralised one while others escaped with gunshot wounds.

    “Items recovered at the scene were: one AK-47 rifle, two magazines and 17 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition; two cell-phones; one power-bank; three ATM cards; one wristwatch, bunch of keys and the sum of N8,900,” he said.

    The spokesman also said that on Dec. 16, troops of Sector 5 conducted a clearance operation within Mbosi and Isseke general area in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra where three IPOB members were neutralised.

    “Items recovered included: one AK-47 rifle, two loaded AK-47 magazines and three Dane guns while a house belonging to one of the irredentist commanders and a shrine used for their fortification were destroyed.

    “The gallant troops had earlier recovered five water gel Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) and two batteries used for detonating the IEDs while on routine patrol along Roads within Ihiala–Orlu, Lilu, Agba Lilu and Orsumoghu general area in Anambra State.”

    He explained that on Dec. 14, troops acting on credible and reliable information from members of the public arrested three suspected kidnappers at Itungwa in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia.

    He said that on receiving the information about the movement of the suspected kidnappers, troops quickly mounted a snap checkpoint in order to apprehend the suspects.

    “The suspects operating in a stolen tricycle on sighting the troops attempted to make a U- turn but were apprehended.

    “Items recovered included: one AK-47 rifle, one G3 rifle, one locally-made single barrel pistol, 10 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, 34 rounds of 5.5mm ammunition, two AK-47 rifle magazines, two G3 rifle magazines and one live cartridge.

    “Other items recovered were: one mobile phone, the sum of N6,600 and two Knapsack bags used for concealing the weapons,” he said.

    Troops of 6 Division, in conjunction with other security agencies, have dismantled 37 illegal refineries and confiscated 130,000 litres of stolen petroleum products in the Niger Delta.

    In a statement, the Acting Director, 6 Division Army Public Relations Lt.-Col Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, said the troops also seized six boats and arrested 10 suspected oil thieves in various operations in the region.

    Troops seize 130,000 litres of stolen products, destroy 37 illegal refineries 

    Troops of 6 Division in conjunction with other security agencies have dismantled 37 illegal refineries and confiscated 130,000 litres of stolen petroleum products in the Niger Delta.

    A statement signed by the Acting Director, 6 Division Army Public Relations Lt. Col Danjuma Jonah Danjuma said the troops also seized six boats and arrested 10 suspected oil thieves in various operations in the region.

    Danjuma said in Rivers State, around Obiafu, in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA) LGA, a cluster of 9 illegal refining sites with 176 cooking drums and several pumping machines was destroyed. 

    “Additionally, two mobile phones, and several locally constructed dumps, stocked with over 60,000 litres of stolen products were confiscated. These include about 50,000 litres of stolen crude, 5,000 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), 6,250 litres of illegally refined Dual dual-purpose kerosene (DPK) and the arrest of four suspected oil thieves”, he said.

    Danjuma said in the Buguma general area in Asari-Toru LGA, three illegal refining sites, a large boat were also deactivated with over 24,000 litres of stolen products recovered. 

    He said around Bille and Bakana general areas in Degema LGA, three illegal refining sites, two wooden and one fibre boats, were intercepted with over 6,000 and 5,000 litres of stolen crude respectfully, as well as 5,000 litres of illegally refined DPK recovered. 

    He said at Ozorchi Forest in Abua/Odual, four illegal refining sites with over 10,000 litres of stolen products were handled.

    “While, clearance operations conducted along Imo River, led to the deactivation of 8 illegal refining sites, 50 drum pots, 65 metal container receivers as well as over 5,000 litres of stolen products recovered”, he said 

    Danjuma said in separate operations conducted in Bayelsa State, around Kunsho Creek in Southern Ijaw, one illegal refining site with 2,000 litres of stolen crude was handled appropriately. 

    He said: “At Kumbo 4 Flow line in Ekeremor LGA, troops thwarted an attempt to compromise Shell Petroleum Development Company pipeline. The vandals fled and abandoned 18 inches of pipes and three gas cylinders at the site.

    “Meanwhile, in Delta State, troops intercepted a tanker truck positioned to siphon crude oil from Platform Petroleum Limited Pipeline at Obiukwole Community in Ethiope East LGA. A blue hose laid into the bush linking the pipeline to the tanker truck in preparation to steal was discovered by troops. 

    “In addition, four suspected oil thieves were arrested at the scene. In Akwa Ibom, troops have continued to dominate both the hinterland and waterways to ward off criminal activities in the state.”

    The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) said that troops on operations across the country killed 181 terrorists in the past week.

    It said troops arrested 203 criminals, including a notorious gun runners, Mohammed Musa (aka Mamman) in Plateau State.

    The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj-Gen Edward Buba, announced this in a statement on Friday.

    He said troops recovered 228 weapons and 6,749 ammunition during several operations within the week.

    The breakdown of recovered weapons, According to Buba, are “four GPMGs, three G3 rifles, 85 AK47 rifles, 38 fabricated rifles, 36 dane guns, 12 FN rifles, three fabricated revolver pistol, 24 locally made pistols, 16 pump action guns, two single barrel guns, one berretta pistol, four hand grenades, three IEDs and 63 magazines.

    “ Others are 2,891 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 1,354 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, 586 rounds of 7.62 x 51mm ammo, 821 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm ammo, 12 rounds of 5.56mm ammo, 409 rounds of 7.62mm PKT ammo, 32 rounds of 7.62 x 54mm PKT ammo, 21 rounds of 9mm ammo, 618 live cartridges, 1,146 assorted empty cases of ammo, 3 bandoliers, 4 baofeng radios, 15 vehicles, 33 motorcycles, and 42 mobile phones amongst other items.”

    Giving an update on troops operations in the Niger Delta region, the defence spokesman said troops recovered 765,680 litres of stolen crude, 86,725 litres of illegally refined diesel, and arrested 50 oil thieves.

    “Troops in the Niger Delta area also discovered and destroyed 25 crude oil cooking ovens, 10 dugout pits, 38 boats, 44 storage tanks, 47 illegal refining sites., six speedboats, three receivers, 48 drums, three motorcycles, one mobile phone and 12 vehicles,” Buba added.

    The military has neutralised over 8,034 terrorists and their leaders.

    It seized over 8,216 weapons and 211,459 ammunition from terrorists and other non-state actors in several operations in security-prone areas

    The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj-Gen Edward Buba, broke the news at a press conference in Abuja yesterday.

    Gen. Buba said the troops arrested 11,623 criminals and rescued 6,376 kidnap victims during the year.

    He said: “The breakdown of the recoveries are as follows: 4,053 AK-47 rifles, 1,123 locally fabricated guns, 731 dane guns and 240 pump action guns. Others are 120,247 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 41,515 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, 5,373 cartridges,1,940 assorted arms and 25,664 assorted ammunitions.”

    On military successes in the Niger Delta region, the defence spokesman said troops recovered 53,101,430 litres of stolen crude oil worth over N57 billion.

    He said troops also recovered 9,179,181 litres of illegally refined diesel, 90,595 litres of kerosene and 156,095 litres of petrol.
