    JUST IN: Troops rescue six kidnap victims in Kaduna

    Troops of Sector 1, Operation FANSAN YAMMA (OPFY) have rescued six kidnapped victims during a clearance operation in the Kajuru/Kujama general area of Kaduna State.

    The victims were freed on Monday, January 5, 2026, during a coordinated military operation conducted across several flashpoints in Chikun, Kajuru, Kachia, and Kagarko Local Government Areas, including border communities around Kauru.

    The operation, according to the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Col Shuaibu Umar, was part of sustained efforts to restrict the freedom of action of violent extremists and criminal elements operating within the Joint Operations Area of Sector 1, Operation FANSAN YAMMA.

    He said troops of Sub-Sector 5, who were already carrying out clearance operations in the Kujeni general area, swiftly responded to a distress alert on the activities of suspected bandits around the Kasso adjoining hills.

    Upon arrival at the location, the troops made contact with the criminals and engaged them with effective suppressive fire, forcing the suspects to flee in disarray into the surrounding forest.

    The troops immediately exploited the area, leading to the successful rescue of six kidnapped victims, who were found unharmed.

    The rescued victims were subsequently handed over to representatives of Kajuru Local Government Area and the Kajuru Emirate Council for onward reunification with their families.

    Commending the troops for the successful operation, the General Officer Commanding, 1 Division Nigerian Army and Commander Sector 1 OPFY, Major General Abubakar Sadiq Mohammed Wase, charged them to remain on maximum alert and sustain the aggressive operational tempo to deny criminal elements any freedom of action within the area.

    Troops of the Nigerian Army have neutralised at least 25 terrorists, rescuing kidnapped victims, and recovering arms and ammunition in the last 24 hours.

    This is contained in a summary of operations made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) by a military source in Abuja yesterday.

    The source said the successes were recorded under the Joint Task Force Northeast, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), Operation Fansan Yamma, Operation Whirl Stroke, and Operation Delta Safe.

    In the Northeast, he said the troops of 73 Battalion (Mechanised), supported by Hybrid Forces and the Civilian Joint Task Force, ambushed a known terrorist crossing point in Sojiri, Konduga Local Government Area of Borno, on January 4.

    According to him, the troops killed five of the terrorists, recovered one AK-47 rifle, and rescued three hostages.

    He confirmed an air strike on an ISWAP/JAS enclave at Garin Mallam Idrissa, east of Garin Abu Ayuba, in Nduva, Borno State.

    According to him, 18 terrorists were killed, including a high-value terrorist commander identified as Munzir, also known as Baa Yanziy.

    He added that nine terrorist motorcycles were destroyed during the strike, degrading the terrorists’ capability.

    The source said the troops of 27 Task Force Brigade, working with Hybrid Forces, ambushed terrorists on the Meleri–Ngirbua axis in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe about 5:30 a.m. on January 4.

    “During the encounter, troops neutralised two terrorists and recovered one AK-47 rifle, with exploitation of the area still in progress.

    “In the Northcentral, troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) recorded a major breakthrough with the recovery of a large cache of arms in Takum Local Government Area of Taraba’’ and arrest of an associate of a criminal kingpin, John Ngata, in Takum, Taraba.

     Acting Media Information Officer, the Headquarters of JTF OPWS, confirmed this in a statement in Makurdi.

    Zubairu stated that he (the associate) was arrested yesterday at a road block.

    He said the suspect later led the troops to John Ngata armoury, where they recovered 13 AK-47 rifles, 39 AK-47 magazines, 690 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, among others.

    He added: “Upon preliminary interrogation, the suspect led the troops to a concealed armoury belonging to the criminal network at Amadu Village in the local government area.

    “Subsequent exploration of the location resulted in the recovery of a significant cache of arms and ammunition, comprising 13 AK-47 rifles, 39 AK-47 magazines, 690 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and quantity four hand grenades.

    “Following the successful recovery, the armoury was professionally destroyed to prevent further use and the troops safely withdrew to base.”

    “In the Southsouth, troops of Operation Delta Safe destroyed three illegal refining sites at Uburum Community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers, recovering and destroying locally fabricated ovens, drums, jerrycans, and plastic tanks used for crude oil refining.

    “Also, troops arrested a suspected gunrunner at Panapena area, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta, recovering two mobile phones and ₦22,700 from the suspect,” he said.

    Security forces have recorded a major operational success in Karaduwa village, Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State, dealing a significant blow to criminal elements terrorising the area.

    The Nation reports that troops, in a swift and coordinated operation, engaged armed bandits in a fierce gun battle, killing three of them, while several others escaped with gunshot wounds. 

    One suspect was arrested alive and is currently providing useful information to security agencies as investigations continue.

    The operation also led to the recovery of eight motorcycles and assorted weapons believed to have been used by the gang to carry out attacks on rural communities and evade security patrols.

    Findings by The Nation revealed that residents of Karaduwa and neighbouring villages welcomed the army-led operation, describing it as a long-awaited relief and a clear indication that security forces are tightening the net around criminal networks operating across Katsina State.

    Military sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the success underscores renewed intelligence-driven operations and sustained patrols aimed at dismantling bandit hideouts, restricting their movement, and restoring public confidence.

    “This operation sends a strong message that there will be no safe haven for criminals. Follow-up operations are ongoing to track fleeing suspects and clear surrounding forests,” one of the sources said.

    The latest development is considered a significant setback for banditry in Matazu LGA and reinforces the resolve of security forces to reclaim troubled areas across Katsina State.

    Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have recovered a large cache of high-calibre ammunition in the Bulumkutu Railway area of Maiduguri, Borno State.

    The recovered items include 1,270 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition warheads, some live 12.7mm rounds, and power banks concealed in a drainage channel. 

    The operation followed a cordon-and-search exercise based on actionable intelligence aimed at denying terrorists freedom of action.

    According to Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North-East) Operation HADIN KAI in a statement said , the recovery underscores the importance of intelligence-led operations and community cooperation in preventing potential threats.

    Lt. Col. Uba explained that the operation was done alongside  troops and Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams who  secured the area and are working to drain the channel to determine if there are additional dangerous items.

    He noted that the operation is part of sustained efforts to dominate the general area, protect critical infrastructure, and ensure resident safety. The security situation remains calm, with troops maintaining vigilance.

    The statement urge residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious items or movements to security agencies, as collective responsibility is vital to sustaining peace and security in the North-East.

     The Nigerian Army troops conducting ongoing anti-kidnapping operations in Kogi State have rescued five abducted victims and recovered decomposing bodies during a clearance operation in Lokoja Local Government Area.

    A credible military source told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday that the troops, drawn from Obajana and Kabba patrol bases, projected a fighting patrol to Ankomi village in the Adankolo general area of Lokoja Local Government Area, following credible intelligence.

    The source said the patrol discovered that the village, previously occupied by bandits, had been destroyed and abandoned.

    “Troops extended the operation to the river line where three women and two children were intercepted. Preliminary debriefing confirmed they were victims of the Ayetoro Kiri kidnap incident,” the source said.

    “Troops further exploited the area and discovered two decomposing bodies suspected to be those of abducted persons. One corpse was evacuated, while efforts were ongoing to recover the remaining remains.

    “The rescued victims are currently receiving medical treatment at Fisayo Hospital, Obajana, while the deceased woman has been deposited at St. Joseph Mortuary in Kabba, Kogi,” he said.

    The source added that debriefing of the rescued victims was ongoing to support efforts to rescue other abductees, noting that the general security situation in the area was calm but unpredictable.

    According to him, troops’ morale and fighting efficiency remain satisfactory, and operations to rescue remaining victims are ongoing.

    Troops of Operation DELTA SAFE, a military campaign against oil theft and bunkering in the Niger Delta, recovered stolen crude and petroleum products valued at ₦8,918,647,206.00 in 2025.

    The Director Defence Media Operations Major General Michael Onoja revealed this during end-of-year media briefing at the Defence Headquarters Abuja, on Wednesday.

    He said troops discovered and destroyed 503 illegal refining sites and arrested 778 oil thieves and other criminals and rescued 53 kidnap victims.

    The breakdown of recovery, according to the Defence spokesperson, are: 16, 623,542) litres of stolen crude, 1,255,674) litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), 407,734 litres of Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK), and 1,508,823 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

    General Onoja said that troops of Operation UDO KA in the North East neutralized scores of terrorists, arrested 324 suspected criminals, and rescued more than 64 kidnapping victims.

    According to the Defence spokesperson, predominant security threats in the South East Zone remain the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its Eastern Security Network (ESN). 

    “Crimes and other criminal activities have significantly decreased, following troops’ intensified operations across the South Eastern States, as well as recent court rulings against their leaders: Simon Ekpa, who was jailed by the Government of the Republic of Finland, and 

    “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in Abuja. These developments have substantially degraded the groups’ capabilities,” he said.

    Troops of the Joint Task Force Faruruwa have rescued an abducted person following a successful security operation along the Kano–Katsina border in the early hours of Sunday.

    Rabiu Halilu, 38, was rescued and treated by the troops.

    The army told The Nation that Halilu sustained a gunshot wound to his leg during captivity and was promptly evacuated to the JTF Faruruwa Medical Centre, where he was treated.

    During the operation, the troops also recovered three motorcycles abandoned by the fleeing bandits and a number of cattle believed to have been rustled by the bandits.

    Some of the motorcycles recovered were stained with blood, the army said.

    Soldiers operating around Yankwada, acting on a credible tip-off about the movement of armed bandits from Daurawa, Kira, Katsina State, advancing towards the Kano axis were engaged in a fierce gunfight.

    Spokesman for 3 Brigade Nigerian Army, Kano, Maj. Zubair Babatunde, said the troops got knowledge of the bandits’ movement at about 1:00 am, Saturday night. 

    “Then the troops operating from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Yankwada swiftly mobilised a fighting patrol to the fringes of the Kano–Katsina border to intercept the suspected bandits.

    “On arrival at Ungwan Dogo/Ungwan Tudu, the troops made contact with the armed bandits and engaged them in a fierce gun battle.

    “The bandits were overpowered and forced to withdraw in disarray towards Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.

    “During the encounter, one kidnap victim, identified as 38-year-old Rabiu Alhaji Halilu, was rescued by the troops.

    “The troops remain on high alert, intensifying patrols in the area to prevent further criminal activities and ensure sustained security in border communities,” Babatunde said.

    Chief of Army Staff (CoAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has directed officers and men of the 248 Recce Battalion in Illela, Sokoto State, to relentlessly pursue terrorists and bandits “to hell,” promising additional gun trucks and operational equipment to strengthen their combat capacity.

    Addressing the battalion during a weekend operational visit, Waidi emphasised that the welfare of troops is a top priority, essential for effective performance.

    “We will not compromise your welfare as a morale booster for your operational successes,” he said, commending the soldiers’ resilience in the harsh operational environment.

    The CoAS, accompanied by the GOC 8 Division, Sokoto, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, and the Theatre Commander OPFY, Major General Idris Warrah, among other senior military officials, assured that the army would exhaust every effort to uphold its operational responsibilities against the nation’s enemies.

    “We will support you and make your stay here comfortable. Remember that Rome was not built in a day and you must show sacrifice, dedication and discipline with resilience against threats by the enemies. 

    “Above all, be proud of been part of the pioneer set to establish this battalion and urge the young Lieutenant leaders of the battalion to responsively design a training programme that would properly launch you to the battle field and enhance the structural linkage that defines your operations through professional briefings as soldiers with listening ears to your officers,” he added, stressing that the 2iCs must not fail to drive the course of action that reflects military core values of respect, discipline and loyalty.

    “We will also fix and ensure repairs of existing vehicles to be braced by additional duty trucks for enhanced operational capacity,” he assured.

    Troops foil kidnap attempt, rescue 24 passengers in Benue

    Troops of Joint Task Force Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have foiled a kidnap attempt on the Otukpo–Enugu Road in Benue State and rescued 24 passengers.

    Lt. Ahmad Zubairu, Acting Media Information Officer, Headquarters JTF OPWS, confirmed this in a statement in Makurdi yesterday.

    Zubairu said the incident, which occurred in Amoda in Ohimini Local Government Area on Monday night, forced the kidnappers to flee and abandon the passengers.

    He said the troops, who acted on a distress call, mobilised to the scene.

    “The armed criminals had emerged from the bush and briefly occupied an existing checkpoint.

    “The assailants subsequently stopped two 18-seater commercial buses travelling from Jos, Plateau, to Ibadan, Oyo State, and attempted to abduct all passengers.

    “However, the timely intervention of troops of OPWS led to a firefight that compelled the kidnappers to abandon their victims and flee into the bush.

    “In the initial encounter, 15 passengers were rescued and handed over to the Nigerian Police Division, Otukpo, while six adults and four minors were declared missing.

    “Subsequent operations led to the rescue of an additional five adults and four minors in custody of the Police Area Command, Otukpo, with search efforts ongoing to locate the remaining missing passenger,” he said.

    According to the statement, the Force Commander, OPWS, Maj.-Gen. Moses Gara, has commended the troops for their prompt response and professionalism.

    Gera reaffirmed the Task Force’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property within its area of responsibility.

    He said they would sustain offensive operations, intelligence-led patrols, and coordinated engagements with sister security agencies to deny criminal elements freedom of action.

    The commander assured the people of a hitch-free yuletide in Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba states.

    He prayed that the season brings God’s abundant mercy, peace, and enduring joy to families and communities.

    He urged believers to remain united, shun violence, and live by the noble virtues exemplified by the Lord Jesus Christ of love, humility, tolerance, and compassion.

    The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, stated that the country owes an immeasurable debt of gratitude to the troops on the frontlines for remaining vigilant and confronting diverse threats to our collective peace and security, while citizens enjoy Christmas with their loved ones.

    General Oluyede said this in a special tribute to frontline troops on the occasion of the Christmas celebration on Wednesday.

    He said, “I pay special tribute to our gallant frontline troops who, even during this sacred season, remain deployed across various theatres of operation in the defence of our nation. 

    “Your courage, discipline, professionalism, and selfless service often at great personal sacrifice epitomise the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of Nigeria. You remain vigilant, confronting diverse threats to our collective peace and security, while others enjoy Christmas with their loved ones. For this, the nation owes you an immeasurable debt of gratitude.”

    In a statement personally signed by him, the CDS thanked citizens for their resilience, patriotism, and continued support of the military, despite the multifaceted security challenges confronting the nation.

    He noted that Christmas is a season that embodies love, sacrifice, hope, and renewal, offering us a solemn opportunity to reflect on our shared humanity, our collective responsibilities as a nation, as well as our unwavering commitment to peace, unity, and national progress.

    The CDS said that Nigerians’ steadfast belief in the Nigerian project remains a vital source of strength and motivation for our troops, stressing that trust, cooperation, and synergy between the military and the citizenry are indispensable to the attainment of sustainable peace and security in the country. 

    He assured that the military would continue to remain resolute in its constitutional mandate to defend Nigeria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and democratic institutions.

    General Oluyede reassured the personnel of the Armed Forces that their welfare remains a top priority and main focus under his leadership. 

    “We are firmly committed to improving the living and working conditions of our personnel and their families through enhanced welfare packages, improved healthcare delivery, better accommodation, timely payment of allowances, and sustained support for the families of our fallen heroes,” the CDS said.

    He urged Nigerians to use this festive period to promote peace, tolerance, and unity across ethnic, religious, and cultural lines, noting that “our diversity remains our strength and our collective resolve is the foundation upon which a secure, stable, and prosperous Nigeria will be built.”

    “As we celebrate this season of goodwill, I urge all members of the Armed Forces to reflect on the teachings of Christ, which express peace, love, forgiveness, selflessness, and purposeful service.”

    The CDS charged members of the Armed Forces to remain disciplined, professional, and loyal to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
