Family petitions IGP, CDS over alleged extra-judicial killing by troops

The Damden family of Mangu Local Government, Plateau State, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbtokun and the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) Gen. Christopher Musa, alleging extra-judicial killing of their son by troops of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH).

Spokesman for the Family, Mr. Longs Datom, who gave copies of the petition to newsmen in Jos, said the victim was shot at close range by a soldier of the OPSH when the victim ran to the troops for protection.

He said: “The victim who was running for his dear life during the attacks in Mangu local government in December 2023,  approached the military, but instead of the protection they sought, they received bullets through the guns of the troops.

“As a result, Mr Damden died instantly. The same bullet hit Mr. Sunday Yusuf on his right hand and shattered it completely which led to him being amputated.

“The body of Damden has been deposited at the mortuary by the family and is yet to be buried until investigation is carried out”, Datom said.

He said there was no justification for soldiers to have opened fire on defenseless civilians, who ordinarily, deserved better protection from the military.

“This is contrary to the rules of engagement in peace keeping operation.

“We have written petitions through some of our concerned lawyers to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbtokun, demanding thorough investigation and prosecution. Petitions have also been written to the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3 Division and Commander Operation Safe Haven, Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, the DSS and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice,” the family said.

He urged the CDS to order a thorough investigation in order to unmask those behind the killing and ensure justice was served.

“The deceased is the breadwinner of the family. He left behind his wife, Tina Damden and three children named, Plangnan Damden, 14, Peret Damden, nine, and Dyelshak Damden six-year-old”

“Also, Mr. Sunday Yusuf, whose hand was amputated, has four children and a wife with nobody to help him,” he said.

The deceased wife, Tana and the amputee, Yusuf called on the government and the military to compensate them so they could cater to their families.

Contacted, the Media Officer, OPSH, Capt. James Oya, said he was not aware of the incident, adding that since the family wrote a petition, the unit in charge would respond to them.

Oya doubted the story narrated by Dantom, claiming that it was impossible for any soldier to just open fire a civilian who approached the troop for safety or to seek information.
