Troost-Ekong blasts Libyan authorities over treatment of Eagles

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has threatened that the team would no longer play their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya after being subjected to hostile treatment upon arrival in the country.

The Nation reported that the team, was left stranded at the airport for over 12 hours after arriving for the match day four fixture in Libya.

The Nigerian team’s flight, originally scheduled to land in Benghazi, was diverted to another city, forcing them to undertake a two-hour road journey.

Ekong who expressed disappointment on social media lamenting how the airport gates had been locked, leaving players and officials with no food, drink, or phone connection.

He said he has never experienced such a treatment like this before while revealing that the Federal Government has been called to intervene in the situation.

He wrote: “12+ hours in an abandoned airport in Lybia after our plane was diverted whilst descending. Lybian government rescinded our approved landing in Benghazi with no reason. They’ve locked the airport gates and left us without phone connection, food or drink. All to play mind games.

“I’ve experienced stuff before playing away in Africa but this is disgraceful behaviour. Even the Tunisian Pilot who thankfully managed to navigate the last minute change to an airport not fit for our plane to land had never seen something like this before.

“Upon arrival he tried to find a nearby airport to rest with his crew to be denied at every hotel again under Government instruction. He could sleep there but NO NIGERIAN crew members allowed. They have returned to now sleep on the plane which is parked up.

“At this point we have called for our Nigerian Government to intervene and rescue us. As the captain together with the team we have decided that we will NOT play this game. CAF should look at the report and what is happening here. Even if they decide to allow.

“This kind of behaviour, let them have the points. We will not accept to travel anywhere by road here even with security it’s not safe. We can only imagine what the hotel or food would be like given to us IF we continued.

“We respect ourselves and respect our opponents when they are our guests in Nigeria. Mistakes happen but these things on purpose have nothing to do with int. football.”

Troost-Ekong: Libya will be tougher at home

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has predicted that Libya will be an even tougher nut to crack when both teams clash again on Tuesday night in Benina.

Tuesday’s rematch will kick off by 8 pm at a packed 10,000-capacity stadium and it will be played on an artificial pitch.

Libya are rooted to the bottom of Group D halfway through the 2025 AFCON qualifying series with only a point and are hard pressed to win in front of their fans to get their campaign back on track.

Augustine Eguavoen’s men travel to the Martyrs of February Stadium to take on the Libyans in front of their home crowd, and Troost-Ekong revealed they’ll have their work cut out for them as they aim for three points away from home.

“Libya will come out fighting, but we want to go there and seal our AFCON qualification. The crowd will be hostile there, they will make it hard for us, but we will be ready. Libya came to get a point, they played defensively, with eight defenders at the edge of their box, and they kept us out for a long time. It was an ugly win and it took a lot of time before we scored, but we got the three points and that’s good for us. A win is a win and I will take this win, but we need to be more clinical (in front goal), try to convert half chances to goals,” former Watford defender said in his post-game conference.

Nigeria are currently top of Group D, leading with seven points from three games, scoring four and conceding none, while Libya’s chances of qualification are growing faint as they’ve gotten just one point so far.

Troost-Ekong targets Eagles return against South Africa

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong is working his way back to full fitness as he recovers from the injury he sustained at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Troost-Ekong suffered an injury during Nigeria’s second group game at the AFCON against Cote d’Ivoire, in which he scored the Super Eagles’ winning goal.

The former Watford defender missed Nigeria’s next match against Guinea-Bissau, but he returned in the knockout rounds and featured as the Eagles reached the final.

Troost-Ekong scored in the semifinal and the final and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. However, after careful assessment and consultation with medical professionals at the end of the AFCON, it was discovered that the 29-year-old centre-back had ruptured the biceps femoris in his right leg.

Subsequently, Troost-Ekong had surgery in Finland, and he was expected to miss the rest of the season. He has not played for his club, PAOK FC since his return from the AFCON, including missing the first leg of their Europa Conference League quarterfinal clash against Raphael Onyedika’s Club Brugge.

Club Brugge claimed a narrow 1-0 win in that encounter, but PAOK are looking to overturn that deficit and make it to the semi-finals.

PAOK ready to sell Troost-Ekong to highest bidder

Greek side PAOK would only listen to big offers for Super Eagles’ captain at the 2023  Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), William Troost-Ekong, in June.

Troost-Ekong, who joined  PAOK in 2023 on a three-year  contract, was adjudged the 2023 AFCON Player of the Tournament, and there are fears that the 30-year-old defender would presumably  want to leave the Thessaloniki club following  his outstanding performance  at the AFCON.

But respected Greek journalist Jonny Georgopolous has informed  NationSports that PAOK  would not allow Troost –Ekong to leave on the cheap, adding that there is already an undercurrent within the club that the Super  Eagles defender would be  allowed to leave in June.

“As you know,  Ekong will be losing the rest of the season because he was recently operated upon after playing the AFCON with injury,” Georgopolous, who works with Greek foremost media outlet, SDNA.gr, told NationSports. “According to what I gathered from PAOK, he’s happy here but based on what he has done at the AFCON, he wants a bigger contract in terms of salary, which PAOK are not willing to pay; they would rather allow him to go at the end of the season.”

The Harlem-born Troost-Ekong has played for a clutch of clubs across  Europe, including

Groningen and Gent in Holland; Bursaspor in Turkey, Watford in England, as well as Udinese and Salernitana in Italy, before arriving at PAOK.

Accordingly, Georgopolous believes Troost-Ekong would not be short of offers  following his inspirational  performance at the AFCON where his resoluteness at the  heart of Nigeria defence helped the Super Eagles to a second place finish.

Yet, the international sports journalist hinted that PAOK  would only let Troost-Ekong  go to a club where they can also recoup their investments, amid offers from Saudi Arabia, for the Super Eagles star.

“ PAOK would want to take good money before he can be allowed to leave in June, because based on what I have gathered, PAOK  will allow Troost-Ekong to leave  at the end of the season,” he disclosed.
