    Truck driver held for killing pedestrian in Ikoyi

    Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) have apprehended the driver of a Mercedes Benz truck after a fatal accident claimed the life of a pedestrian along Osborne Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

    The incident occurred along Simpson Street, inward Ikoyi, near the Osborne Expressway Traffic Light Junction, when the truck, with registration number KRD 466 XJ, reportedly suffered a mechanical brake failure while moving at high speed.

    Eyewitnesses said the driver, in a desperate bid to avoid crashing into vehicles ahead, lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road, hitting a pedestrian who was walking by the roadside. The victim died instantly.

    LASTMA officials on duty at the scene were said to have moved swiftly to cordon off the area, preventing further accidents and ensuring free vehicular movement around the busy corridor.

    The truck driver was immediately apprehended by LASTMA personnel and handed over to security operatives from the Dolphin Estate and Ikoyi Police Divisions for further interrogation and legal action.

    Police officers later evacuated the remains of the deceased to a mortuary in Ebute Metta, pending formal identification by the family.

    Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the occurrence as “tragic and preventable,” while extending condolences to the family of the deceased.

    He said the accident was another reminder of the need for proper vehicle inspection and maintenance, especially among operators of heavy-duty and articulated vehicles.

    Bakare-Oki urged all motorists, particularly truck drivers and fleet operators, to carry out thorough mechanical checks before setting out, with special attention to the braking system.

    “Mechanical negligence and poor maintenance culture remain among the leading causes of avoidable fatalities on our roads,” he said.

    He commended the prompt and coordinated intervention of LASTMA operatives and the police, assuring that the agency will continue to uphold safety and discipline on Lagos roads.

  • Truck driver, motor boy face theft charge

    A truck driver Sunday Oladeyekun, and his assistant, Lateef Olowokere, were yesterday arraigned before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly stealing 70 litres of diesel valued at N16,000. The product belonged to Dangote Oil Refinery.

    Oladeyekun, 42, who lives at 27, Aina Street, Ibadan, Oyo State and Olowokere, 27, who resides in Ajegunle, Lagos, are facing two counts of conspiracy and theft.

    Prosecutor Fidelis Dike told the court that the accused committed the offence on September 20 at 2am at Dangote Oil Refinery, Lagos.

    He alleged that the driver and his motor boy were apprehended by a security guard while they were stealing the diesel from a truck parked on the plant’s premises.

    The offence, the prosecution said, contravened sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Omolaja Kazeem granted them N5000 bail, with two sureties each in the like sum.

    He ordered that the sureties must be responsible and employed.

    Kazeem adjourned till November 22.

  • Truck driver ‘kills’ teenager

    A 44-year-old truck driver, Jimoh Oladipupo, yesterday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly causing the death of a 16-year-old girl, Ebun Solomon.

    Oladipupo is facing a seven-count charge of reckless driving and manslaughter.

    Prosecuting Inspector Ajayi Emmanuel, told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 12 at Vono Junction, along Olateju Road, Mushin, Lagos.

    Emmanuel said the accused drove a Mack truck marked KSF 421 SM recklessly and hit a commercial bus with 14 passengers on board.

    “Oladipupo hit the bus from behind and immediately it somersaulted, resulting in the death of Ebun Solomon while other 13 passengers were seriously injured,’’ he said.

    He said the accused failed to report the accident at the police station and was about to escape when people at the scene apprehended him.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Omolade Awope granted the accused N500, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The case was adjourned till June 20.

    A 26-year-old driver, Endurance Aigbogun, was yesterday arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court for allegedly driving recklessly and causing the death of a motorist.

    He pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Inspector Kehinde Olatunde told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 3 at Amuwo Odofin, on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway.

    He alleged that the accused, who drove a Mack truck marked GGE 673 XM rammed into a Mercedes Benz commercial bus and caused the death of Augustine Akakporo, 56.

    Magistrate Bola Folarin-Williams granted the accused N500,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The sureties, she said,  must be gainfully employed and show evidence of tax payment to Lagos State.

    She fixed April 24 for receipt of legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

    In another case,   a 34-year-old driver, Abdulkareem Shaibu, was arraigned for alleged reckless driving and causing the death of a police sergeant.

    Shaibu is facing a three-count charge of dangerous driving, driving without a licence and causing the death of a motorcyclist.

    He pleaded not guilty.

    Olatunde said the accused committed the offence on March 1 at 2.45 a.m. at Ijora Olopa Market.

    He said Shaibu, who drove an unregistered Passat saloon car,  knocked down the Sergeant, a rider attached to Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Alausa, Ikeja.

    Magistrate Folarin-Williams granted him N500,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The case continues on April 10 for advice from the  DPP.

    Truck driver, conductor escape lynching in Aba

    A truck driver and his conductor yesterday escaped being lynched by a mob after hitting a trader on the Aba-Owerri Road.

    The woman died in hospital.

    It was gathered that sympathisers took the woman to a private hospital, but she was rejected.

    According to sources, the situation would have degenerated into chaos, if not for  policemen and soldiers.

    The whereabouts of the driver and his conductor were unknown last night.

    An eyewitness, simply identified as Clement, said the deceased sold tomatoes at the Good Morning Market in Aba South.

    Clement said: “The accident happened around 5 am. The woman was trying to cross the road when the speeding trailer knocked her down. The driver ran away but sympathisers quickly rushed the woman to the hospital.”

    Unconfirmed reports said the driver and his assistant were taken to the Aba Command after police and soldiers calmed the situation.

    Police spokesman Geoffrey Ogbonna could not be reached for confirmation.

    Butcher ‘waylays’ truck driver

    A 30-year-old butcher, Saheed Ibrahim, yesterday appeared before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court for allegedly waylaying a truck driver on Carter Bridge and dispossessing him of N170,000.

    Ibrahim, who lives at 3, Ogbayo Street, Sangotedo Lekki, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Inspector Philip Osijiale told the court that the accused and three of his accomplices, who are  at large, committed the offences on November 28, at about 8:00pm.

    Osijiale said the accused and his team waylaid Mohammed Bukankwato on Carter Bridge, Idumota, Lagos Island, when his truck broke down.

    He said the accused and his accomplices forcefully collected N170,000 from the driver.

    “The truck driver was coming from Mile 12 and heading to Ijora when his truck broke down on the bridge. The accused and his gang accosted him and threatened to throw him in the Lagoon if he did not give them all he had. They collected the sum of N170,000 from him and ran away.

     

     

     

  • Manslaughter: Truck driver, gets N500,000 bail

    A 41-year-old truck driver, Garuba Adamu, who allegedly drove his vehicle recklessly and knocked down a pedestrian, Olubukola Ajayi, was on Tuesday released on N500,000 bail on the orders of an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Y.R. Pinheiro, who gave the ruling, also granted the accused two sureties in like sum, one  of who must be a landed property owner in the state.

    Adamu, whose address is unknown, had pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge of dangerous driving, driving without licence and manslaughter.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Mathew Akhaluode, told the court that the accused drove recklessly and knocked down Ajayi, who was walking along the road.

    He said Adamu, who drove a truck with registration no. KSF 821 XM, committed the offences at about 7.00 a.m. on Feb. 7 along Ekoro Road, Abule Egba,  a Lagos suburb.

    The accused was alleged to have also damage a tricycle belonging to Abdulkarim Yahaya.

    “A team of traffic management officials rushed to the scene and took the lifeless body of the victim to the hospital.”

    The offences contravened Sections 19, 20 and 28 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The magistrate adjourned the case to March 20 for mention.

    Truck driver dies in road crash

    A truck driver died yesterday when his vehicle collided with a trailer laden with black oil at Abule-Egba on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

    The accident occurred around 4:30am at Abule-Egba close to the headquarters of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Lagos State council.

    The truck, marked APP746XK Lagos was said to have hit the tanker, marked KMC211ZA Kano, from the rear. The tanker driver did not stop until he reached Oja-Oba, where he abandoned his vehicle and fled.

    An eyewitness said he might have fled to avoid being lynched.

    According to him, poor visibility may have led to the accident.

    A Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) official said the truck driver might have been speeding before ramming into the trailer.

    He said LASTMA officials and fire fighters teamed up to remove the body. They also towed the truck to Abattoir Police Station in Agege.

    “While the truck was being towed away, its engine fell at Oja-Oba but we managed to take everything to the station,” he said.

    Another eyewitness said: “The accident occurred in front of the office of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, but the impact of the hit pushed the trailer several metres away.

    “The driver of the tipper was on high speed that he died on the spot while the driver of the trailer could not stop immediately until several metres away.

    “The trailer was spilling its contents as the driver was struggling to control and to stop the vehicle,” he said.

    The Divisional Traffic Officer (DTO) of Abattoir Police Station, Agege, Lagos, Yemi Adeyemi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that her division received a distress call after the accident and responded swiftly.

    Adeyemi confirmed that the accident occurred around 5am, adding that the driver of the tipper died.

    She said the body of the deceased had been deposited at the Ifako General Hospital.

    NAN reports that there was a mild drama at the accident scene as members of the Tippers Association from Abeokuta requested to take the body away.

    Adeyemi, however, declined saying the body could only be released to the family or the association after the doctor’s report and after proper identification of those who wanted to take it.

    NAN reports that members of the association to which the deceased belonged were seen wailing at the scene.

    A boy, who described himself as the deceased’s motorboy, told NAN in tears that the driver trained him. He said the deceased was alone when the accident happened.

    LASTMA official said the motor-boy was waiting for the deceased at Oja-Oba, about a kilometre to the accident scene.

    Ojuelegba tragedy: Truck owner remanded in prison

    An Ebute-Metta Chief Magistrates’ Court has remanded Adeyanju Kilani, the owner of the articulated vehicle which fell of the bridge on Sept. 2, in prison custody.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the articulated vehicle carrying a 20ft container fell of the bridge and killed three people at Ojuelegba, Lagos.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Folashade Botoku, gave the ordered in Lagos on Tuesday.

    Kilani, 50, was arraigned on a two-count charge of permitting his driver, one Wasiu Adeleke to drive without a valid driver’s licence, MOT test and Road worthiness certificate.

    Prosecutor G.O. Osuyi said that the offences were committed on Sept. 2, on Ojuelegba Bridge along Funsho Williams Avenue, Lagos.

    Adeleke, driver of the articulated vehicle, was arraigned before the same court on Sept. 11, on an eleven-count charge of reckless driving negligent manner, and causing the death of three motorists.

    “Adeleke, drove a Diesel truck with Reg. No. Lagos EPE 46 XK carrying a 20 feet container loaded with iron doors and white cement in a negligent manner.

    [ad id=”403656″]“In view of his alleged reckless driving, the container fell, causing the deaths of one Abubakar Sule, 52, Umaru Sulaiman, 46 and Kamilu Umaru, 28.

    “The truck also damaged a Toyota Corolla with Reg. No. LSD 532 CN, valued at two million naira belonging to Sumaila Marksman and a Nissan Sunny, Reg. No. DG 750 LND, valued at N600,000, belonging to one Joseph Ajayi,’’ he said.

    The offences, Osuyi noted, contravened Sections 31 and 36 (1 and 2) of the Lagos state Road Traffic Law 2012.

    Kilani, however, pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

    Botoku, ordered that Kilani be remanded in prison custody pending when she would deliver ruling on his bail application.

    The Counsel to the accused, W.O. Toriola, had requested the court to grant the accused bail based on self-recognition being a senior citizen of the country with no prior criminal record.

    Osuyi, however did not oppose the application for bail.

    The case was, thereafter, adjourned till Sept. 23, for ruling on the bail application.
