As a man thinks in his heart so he is, for out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornication, thefts, false witness, blasphemies and these things defile a man. This was the case with the Pharisees and the scribes, their heart was full of evil; hence, their evil actions. They were religious leaders who portrayed themselves as righteous; having an outward appearance of godliness, but they were brood of vipers as Jesus called them; they lived in hypocrisy and much wickedness. Isaiah prophesied of them saying, “These draw near to Me with their mouth, and honour Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me, and in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men”.

While Jesus sought to make sinners free from the bondage of sin, they sought to punish and kill (as the case may be) those they find guilty of breaking their law. They ostracised from the temple anyone who does not agree with their hypocritical way of life and doctrines.

They organized their followers and saw to the death verdict of Jesus, in whom no guilt was found, one whom God sent to deliver them from their blindness and bondage of sin; they were so blinded by their hatred and envy that they refused the Truth. Although Jesus’ death was God’s plan to put to perpetual death the power of sin over man, but the religious leaders should not have been the ones to mastermind this. Their action showed the true state of their heart despite their deceptive religious outlook.

The Bible makes us to know that “a good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart; for the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” Therefore, your heart is who you are. The Psalmist knowing this truth, prayed saying, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me”

No matter how much someone pretends and tries to deceive to be seen as a godly person, in the long run the real person behind the deceit will show. Anyone who wants to bring forth good fruits without pretence must then look seriously on how to keep his/her heart pure; to be full of light, man has a lot of part to play to achieve this.

No wonder the book of wisdom says, ‘guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it springs the issues of life,”.

How then can a believer make his/her heart pure? From my personal experience and other people’s lives and above all from the revelation of God’s word, I know that the only way to make one’s heart pure is by engaging in a deliberate and continuous daily STUDY OF THE WORD OF GOD with the intention to OBEY what God reveals to you. This is when a genuine transformation from within can take place, for The word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Only the word of God can truly transform a man from inside out.

The word of God as written out for us in the Bible renews our minds; it cleanses and transforms a man’s heart. Remember, the whole Bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us do what is right.

So anyone who studies and obeys God’s word is the man who brings forth good fruits, his/her show of righteousness is never a pretence but from a genuine transformation. God transforms his heart as he yields to God, studying His word daily and living by His teaching. This yields an amazing good result and I am a living proof.  There is NO end to the effect of the Word of Truth in the life of a believer in Christ Jesus.

May the good Lord make us love to study His word, revealing the deep truth therein and helping us obey Him fully, so we can be truly transformed beings, who will do God’s will on earth and cause a true change to come upon this nation Nigeria and the world at large in Jesus name- amen!

ARAMIDE TEAMS UP WITH ADINA IN ‘TRUTH’

AFRO-SOUL Queen, Aramide teamed up with Ghanaian-South African Afro-pop star, Adina, to release a new song today, titled ‘Truth’.

Recorded during Aramide’s recent media tour in Ghana, ‘Truth’ is Aramide’s first duet and collaboration since the release of her debut album ‘Suitcase’.

Produced by Richie Mensah, the song showcases Aramide’s riveting voice and unique flavour, with a mix of her native Yoruba, paired with Adina’s equally distinctive vocals.

Both artists elevate the song into a cathartic plea about the importance of telling the truth no matter how difficult, because ‘the truth hits you hard’.

To be victorious in all things like Jesus is possible only if we will hear His voice and obey Him. His voice is His word and we have this written for us in the Bible.

…the sheep hear the voice of the good shepherd and come to Him; and He calls His own sheep by name and leads them out. He walks ahead of them; and they follow Him, for they recognize His voice.  They won’t follow a stranger but will run from him, for they don’t recognize his voice.” Jesus is the one being talked about as the good shepherd, the sheep are those who hear His voice and follow Him. The true sheep recognize their shepherd’s voice and they follow Him; they grew into recognizing His voice and are able to differentiate it from a stranger’s voice because they fellowship one on one together with the good shepherd. Through continuous personal fellowship with the good shepherd they mastered His voice, no one can deceive them for they will not follow the voice of a stranger who comes craftily to kill, steal and destroy. Just like Jesus when tempted could not be deceived into following the suggestions of Satan who quoted scriptures to deceive Him, so also the true sheep of the good shepherd will not be deceived by Satan and his agents.

We are in the age of great deceit where many are being deceived into believing all kinds of false doctrines/teachings, all because they have refused to see the great importance of knowing God by themselves but prefer to go through mediums to reach God which of course is impossible. Only Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the life, He is the good shepherd who came to give us life more abundantly and opened the path to true fellowship with God.

After my encounter with Jesus, He got me into fellowship with Him, this made me love to study His word- the Bible and my life truly has been awesomely changed through this. I am incomplete without my daily study of God’s word; not knowing what He has to say to me daily.

I would have gone astray and fallen into deep pits; but His word has kept me safe, it has been a lamp guiding my feet and a light directing my path.

To be a sheep who recognizes and follows the voice of the good shepherd, you need to prayerfully start studying God’s word (the Bible) systematically daily. To do this you need to start your QUIET TIME.

What is Quiet Time and how is it practiced?

As the name implies Quiet Time is a time, which is QUIET, devoid of distractions and disturbances; a time set aside to hear the good shepherd and relate with Him intimately. This builds in us a lifelong, ever-abiding loving relationship and fellowship with God. As a relationship without proper communication dies, so also one’s relationship with God dies without proper communication; and remember communication should be 2- way; hence the need for quiet time.

What you will need/How of Quiet Time:

    • Prayer: Ask for God’s grace for without Him it will be very impossible; it will become an uphill task. For we are weak bodily but He is strong- only Him will help you wake up at your chosen time and empower you to study, revealing deep truths in His word to you.

When God asked me to make my Quiet time earlier than it used to be, at first, it was quite difficult for me to accept mentally. I had so many excuses and reasons why it would be impossible. As long as I didn’t accept it mentally and believe in Jesus’ strength to make it possible, it would remain impossible for me. The truth remains that no one who desires to be used to do great things on earth, thereby fulfilling purpose, can do without his/her time alone with God. Until I accepted it and asked God’s help was I able to do it and for years now, God has remained faithful. I would have missed out of a great opportunity of a deeper intimacy with God, if I didn’t submit to Him.

    • Create a regular time– a time you will not be disturbed or distracted. Most ideally, early/ wee hours of the morning, set aside at least one hour daily. You can set your alarm for this.
    • A quiet place: where you will not be disturbed.

Jesus’ intimacy with His father and His quiet time habit kept Him focussed on His assignment and helped Him end well. Continually Jesus withdrew from the crowd, daily life activities, and the demands of His ministry to be alone with His Father and communicate with Him.

    • A Bible: In a simple translation you can understand. It will be nice to have other translations to compare text for better understanding.
    • A Notebook: where you write down lessons learnt from your study and your daily dealings with God.
    • Your reading note/devotional booklet: There are a lot in circulation but prayerfully seek the best for you; one that will help you study the Bible systematically and deeply every day. I’ve found DAILY GUIDE to be very good for adults, DAILY POWER for youths and DAILY MILK for children, all published by Scripture Union Nigeria. You can prayerfully choose from other good ones in circulation. NOTE: Your devotional booklet should NEVER replace your Bible, it’s meant to help systematically arrange the Bible text and also highlight some important revelations from the day’s text for full and better understanding, it’s wrong to read only the booklet.

Aside quiet time, we need to study God’s word always. God’s word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.

  • Moment of truth

On his return from London on March 10, about 54 days after he went there on vacation, President Muhammadu Buhari spoke extensively on his health, which many of his aides had shied away from. The president left home on January 19 for a 10-day vacation. As days turned to weeks, Nigerians started asking questions on why their president had not returned as scheduled.

When some people began to suggest that he was critically ill, the Presidency responded that it was not so. All, it said, was well with the president, ‘’who is just resting based on his doctor’s advice’’. The issue of the health of the president of any country should not be something to hide from his compatriots. The president as Nobel laureate Prof Wole Soyinka said last weekend is public property.

It was a bewildered nation that heard the president speak the way he did on March 10 because many did not know he was that seriously ill. Frank, candid and forthright as ever, the president told some governors and ministers, at a reception held for him at the Villa : ‘’I could not recall being this sick since I was a young man, including the military, with its ups and downs. I have received I think the best of treatment I could receive. Blood transfusion, going to the laboratories, and so on and so forth. But, I am very pleased that we, when I say we, I mean the government and the people all over…I could not recall when last I had transfusion; I could not recall,  honestly I can say in my 70 years’’.

He thanked Nigerians for their prayers, adding that he is billed to return “within some weeks” for further follow up. Some 48 hours after his return, he went back to work, but things have not been the same since then. We hardly see our president in public these days except on Fridays. But, last Friday, we did not see him at his usual haunt, the mosque at the Villa, where he joins the faithful to observe Jumat. The reason for this is obvious. Before last Friday, his major critics, particularly Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, had taken swipes at him for not coming to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meetings, but always going for Jumat service.

There is nothing bad in a public officer, especially the president going for prayers, but it sends a wrong signal if it does not complement his job. The question the public is asking is should the president be absent at FEC meetings and be present at Jumat services? Nobody is saying that the president should not go and pray, but can we reconcile that with his absence at the meetings of the nation’s highest ruling organ? The president is the state; so whatever happens to him or whatever he does reflects on the state. There is no way the FEC would have done any meaningful thing during the period it met without its presiding officer. Though the All Progressives Congress (APC) governors now want us to believe that it is not compulsory for him to chair FEC meetings.

Will the governors, in all honesty,  concede the chairmanship of their state executive councils’ meetings to their deputies when they are around, but recuperating? We should stop playing politics with this issue because of its grave implications for us as a nation. This is why I find former interim National Chairman of APC Chief Bisi Akande’s intervention as a good development. In a statement issued on Monday, he discussed the president’s health vis-a-vis developments in the polity. ‘’There are two challenges facing the country today. The first is the health of the president, which unfortunately, is a development beyond his control and for which we did not prepare. The second is the disorder and lack of cohesion between the National Assembly and the Presidency. These are two great red flag dangers that have the potential of plunging the country into unprecedented chaos and of destabilising the gains of democracy since 1999.

“The greatest danger, however, is for political interests at the corridor of power attempting to feast on the health of Mr President in a dangerous manner that may aggravate the problems between the executive and the National Assembly without realising it. In the end, it could drag the country into avoidable doom. As delicately fragile as the union of nations making up Nigeria, so delicately fragile is the democracy and the rule of law governing the polity of the union called Nigerian federation…To avoid the ugly consequences of letting President Buhari’s ailment throw Nigeria into confusion, I am urging all Nigerians to begin to pray for his divine healing and perfect recovery.”

Indeed, can we say there is improvement in the president’s health since his return from London 54 days ago? This may be why he has not been attending FEC meetings. The job of a president is quite demanding; it is full of rigour and it is not an office to be held by the feeble in health. The president must be sound in mind and body. If he is not, according to the 1999 Constitution, he is expected to yield place to the vice president and go take care of himself  after writing the National Assembly. From what we have seen so far, is the president still fit to hold office? Only the president and his doctors can tell. But for now, it will be better for him to return to London to keep his appointment with his doctors. He told us that he was expected back ‘’within some weeks’’. It is close to eight weeks now since his return home. How much longer does he have to wait before going to keep the appointment?

It is high time he kept that appointment for the sake of himself, his family and the country, which he loves with his whole being. We pray that what we experienced not too long ago will not repeat itself so soon.

    Topic: The word of Truth

God chose Joshua to be the next leader of Israel after Moses, to him was given the overwhelming task of leading the Israelites to possess their promised inheritance. Joshua knew Moses’ shoes were too big for him to fill. Someone who understands what leadership entails will not be quick to throw a party and celebrate when chosen to be a leader in whatsoever capacity. Leadership positions call for sober reflection; it is huge and never to be taken lightly because everything has to be done according to God’s pattern. Joshua understood this truth, he desired to be a leader after God’s own heart who would lead and succeed God’s way. The task ahead of him was enormous and challenging; there were strong nations to be defeated, he would need the acceptance and cooperation of the people he is to lead, and for God to be with him as He was with Moses.

Joshua waited to hear from God before embarking on his assignment. God told him to ARISE! from his fear and despair and get set for the work, He then gave him his job description and told him how he will prosper and have good success as the next leader of Israel. God said to him:

    • “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to ALL that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then have good success”

Joshua will have to study and know the word of God (the book of the law). He will meditate on it day and night so it will become part of him; he has to live by the word of God; in total obedience to do what God tells him to do and He will teach it to the people. Then and only then would Joshua be sure of God’s presence, prosperity and good success during his reign. God’s word will also build his faith, dispel his fear, and make him strong and courageous.

Note that before Joshua embarked on his task, he waited to get instructions from the God who made him a leader; he did not trust in his own understanding.  He is to commune daily with God to get full direction on how to carry out each task and obey Him fully in order to experience good success.

There is good and bad success. Good success is God’s success; you get it through godly means. God gives good success when you chose to honour/obey Him in all your ways. Good success does not have expiry date; it is everlasting, it will lead you to heaven at last, while Bad success is the success acquired through ungodly means. It is the success attained without honouring God in one’s actions. Many call on God with their mouths but do not live as God wants them to; they do not obey God, they do not do the right things God wants them to do to succeed. Bad success has an expiry date and it will lead one to hell fire someday. Let us be warned!

The fortified Jericho was the first city they destroyed, except for Rehab and her family who were saved because she believed in the God of Israel and His word.

God gave Joshua an unconventional strategy to defeat Jericho. Jericho was a fortified city with a double stone wall of about 12-15 feet high and 14 feet wide. It was virtually unconquerable. God instructed Joshua to march around the city with his army once daily for 6 days with seven priests walking ahead of the Ark of God’s Covenant, each carrying trumpet made from ram’s horn. On the seventh day they were to walk around the city 7 times and the priests shall blow the trumpets. When the priests give a long, loud blast, all the people were to give a mighty shout and the wall of the city will fall down. To most people this strategy will sound foolish and unreasonable but this was a test of Joshua’s full obedience to God’s word. Joshua summoned the people and gave them the instructions, they followed God’s instructions, and wall of Jericho fell down flat. Jericho was defeated.

The next city to be conquered is Ai, a small city. They confidently went into battle against Ai with few soldiers but they were soundly defeated by small Ai, they fled from them and 36 Israeli soldiers were killed. Why the defeat? God’s command to destroy everything in Jericho except that, which was reserved for the Lord’s treasury, was disobeyed. For Achan took some loot for himself and this brought trouble for Israel.

Joshua cried out to God and God spoke to him, saying, “Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. For they have taken some of the accursed things and have both stolen and deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff. Therefore, the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they have become doomed to destruction. Neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the accursed from among you.”

It was when Israel destroyed the accursed in their midst they experienced peace and victory again. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, enemies will defeat someone who will not fully obey God.

If you truly want to win battles, prosper, and have good success, then you have to study God’s word (The Bible) daily to know Him and His ways, to know how He wants you to live, so you can fully obey Him. By so doing, our nation too will prosper and have good success.

  • The Strong Belt of Truth (6)

The Nigerian national anthem “Arise, O Compatriots” was adopted in 1978, replacing the previous one “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.” John A. Ilechukwu, Eme Etim Akpan, B. A. Ogunnaike, Sota Omoigui and P.O. Aderibigbe wrote the lyrics. Their submission was the best in a national contest.

God Himself, who created all things and gave us this great nation Nigeria, inspired the writing of our national anthem especially the second stanza.

    Arise, O compatriots

    Nigeria’s call obey

    To serve our fatherland

With love and strength and faith

The labour of our heroes past

    Shall never be in vain

To serve with heart and might

One nation bound in freedom, peace, and unity.

    Oh God of creation

    Direct our noble cause

    And guide our leaders right

Help our youth the Truth to know

In love and honesty to grow

    And living just and true

    Great lofty heights attain

To build a nation where peace

    And justice shall reign.

The stanza “Oh God of creation…” honours God who brought us together to be one nation; it calls on Him to shepherd, direct, and help us. For without God we can do nothing.

A very important message and prayer in the anthem is directed to our youth- the future of Nigeria. This prayer calls for the Nigerian youth to know the Truth, in order to grow in love, honesty, righteousness, truthfulness, achieving great lofty heights and being used to build a Nigeria where there will be peace and justice.

In order to attain all the good virtues mentioned in the anthem- love, honesty, righteousness, truthfulness, peace, justice and greatness, the Nigerian youth need TO KNOW THE TRUTH.

The Truth as we now know from previous editions is a person and that person is JESUS. Jesus is in our national anthem. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life, no one comes to the Father (God) except through Him. If you know the Truth, He will set you free from the bondage of sin and as you abide in Him, He will make you remain free, ‘Therefore if the Son (Jesus) makes you free, you shall be free indeed’

The Nigerian youth needs to know, believe, and abide in the Truth, to be set free and made completely free from sin. Sin draws us back as a nation. Where there abounds dishonesty, corruption, unrighteousness, hatred, fighting, killing, terrorism, injustice, sexual immorality etc., we will not prosper.

Knowledge of the law of a land with the corresponding punishment for breaching the law cannot stop people from disobeying it and cannot save people from sin. Man was born with the nature of sin, we were all born in sin, and that nature has to die before man can be free from sin. This freedom is what Jesus accomplished for us; God presented Him as a sacrifice to die for us, thereby crucifying our nature of sin. Through His death, the power of our sinful nature was shattered, and we were set free from the nature and bondage of sin- this is to them that believe. Your own sinful nature will die as you accept and believe in the price Jesus paid to save you by His death on the cross, and as you follow Jesus, you will live the life of righteousness. No power, no law can save someone from sin, Only Jesus can save from sin. Have you ever wondered why an armed robber after release from a long stay in the prison, still goes back to crime almost immediately? That nature of sin has to die, for one to be set free from the bondage of sin.

It is only when a youth knows the Truth (Jesus) as rightly captured by the anthem, will he be set free from his sinful nature, and then be given a new life and a new spirit- the Holy Spirit of God. His heart is changed from a stony, stubborn heart to a heart capable of love- loving God with all his heart, soul and strength and loving his neighbour as himself- incapable of causing anyone harm in any way; he will love his enemies and pray good prayers for them. Only through Jesus is this possible

Every citizen of Nigeria needs to know the Truth to have this new life. A life of love, peace, honesty, righteousness, truthfulness, and impartiality.

Oh, Father let the Nigerian youth and all Nigerians know Jesus the Truth that we may grow in love and honesty, living just and true, great lofty heights attain, to be used to build a nation where peace and justice will reign, In Jesus name- Amen!.

  • When truth can’t set you free

He broke my heart but I did not cry. Why should I cry? I am a Nigerian.  We are hardly shocked.  Here, our elites deprive the people of the opportunity to enjoy the fruits of their labour. Here, contracts are awarded on paper, money approved and taken but nothing to show for it. Here, money that could build a whole country or countries, from scratch, is stolen by one person who obviously suffers from psychiatric disorder. In my language, we call such people were alaso.

Here, we sell nonsense as sense. Here, our leaders treat us as if we do not matter. Here, projects are completed on paper, yet the reality is walls apart. Here, projects that have not started at all have been paid for and will never be done. Here, we accept the absurd as our ways of doing things. After all, this is Naija, we are quick to tell ourselves.

These shocking facts were expounded by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo and he broke my heart. Not because he spoke the truth, but because the truth will still not set free the people of Niger Delta on whose soil he spoke on Monday in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Osinbajo said we must find a way out. When he said this, what came to my mind was President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement that “we must kill corruption if we don’t want corruption to kill us”. For a region rich in resources, but with some of the poorest people this side of the globe, the Niger Delta situation is pathetic.

As he tours the Niger Delta, he has expounded these truths. From Rivers to Bayelsa to Akwa Ibom and Edo, Osinbajo has not failed to bare it all. Still, the people are helpless. No thanks to poverty, they still pander to the whims of their oppressors who even give them guns to kill one another during elections.

The mess the Niger Delta has found itself started in Oloibiri in 1956. The people were happy– thinking their town would soon become London. Any voice of dissent, any voice of reasoning was shut down. And years down the line, they felt they had listened.

The Oloibiri story resonates all over the Niger Delta, which extends to over 70,000 square kilometres and constitutes about 7.5 per cent of Nigeria’s land mass. The densely populated area comprises Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo; Akwa Ibom and Rivers states. It extends to parts of Ondo, Imo and Abia states.

This troubled region is home to over 31 million people and is the oil and gas-producing belt. Since the discovery of oil in commercial quantity in Oloibiri, the region has been embroiled in controversies, agitation and protests over the attendant oil spills, devastating pollution of fishing zones and sources of potable water and ecological degradation.

Over the years, the people have lived in conditions that are intolerable. From time to time, gross neglect and under-development snowballs into pockets of protests and agitation for resource control because successive administrations at the centre and in some states glossed over sustainable development of the region.

While other regions were being developed in infrastructure and human capital, the reverse was the case in the Niger Delta. No wonder there has been a debate on whether oil exploration is a curse or a blessing to the region.

Bottled resentment as a result of the status quo has been blamed for vandalism of oil and gas pipelines and kidnappings for ransom. As can be seen in the film Oloibiri, the youths thought violence could help and before they knew it, they became killers, spilling blood here and there.

The enactment of the Mineral Ordinance by Nigeria’s first Governor-General Sir Frederick Luggard in 1914 signalled the exploration and exploitation of the country’s mineral resources, especially oil and gas.

In 1937, the British colonial government gave the exclusive rights of exploration and exploitation to Shell D’Arcy, which could not actualise this mandate because of the Second World War. In 1938, Shell entered into collaboration with British Petroleum (formerly Anglo-Persian Oil Company) for oil prospection in Nigeria.

Their early efforts yielded 450 barrels of crude oil in Akata I Well, in 1951. Further successes were made in Oloibiri in 1956 and Bomu Oil Field in 1958 when oil was struck in commercial quantity.

Many major players in the global oil sector were later granted prospecting licences. Such players include Socony Vacuum (now Mobil) in 1955, Tennessee (later Tennenco) in 1960, Gulf Oil (now Chevron) in 1961, American Overseas (later Amoseas) in 1961, Agip Oil in 1962, Safrap (now ELF Phillips) in 1965 and Esso in 1965.

Shell, Mobil, Chevron, ELF, Agip and Texaco were major players in the oil sector. Others, such as Ashland, Deminex, Pan Ocean, British Gas, Sun Oil, Conoco, Statoil, BP and Chemical Oil Company (now Conoil), played minimal roles.

In collaboration with Shell, the Federal Government set up the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) with a plant at Finima, Bonny Island to enable it maximise its revenue from oil prospecting and reduce gas flaring. The country has earned several millions of dollars in revenue from the NLNG.

In spite of these efforts to increase the extraction of both oil and gas from wells and fields located in the region and consequently shore up gross revenue earnings, the peoples of the Niger Delta have tales of deprivation and neglect to tell.

A large proportion of the country’s poor lives in the Niger Delta where the exploration and exploitation of oil and gas has created sorry sites and sights of oil spills and distorted bio-diversity.

The situation has often given rise to non-violent and violent protestations. These include the initial 12-Day Revolution in the Creeks in 1967, which was championed by the trio of Isaac Adaka Boro, Samuel Owonaru and Nothingham Dick, in a failed bid to secede from Nigeria.

There were other protests and agitations by groups, such as the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), led by the late Ken Saro-Wiwa who was killed by the Gen. Sani Abacha Administration and activities of groups, such as the Ogba Solidarity, the Urhobo Progressive Union, the Niger Delta Environmental Forum, the Chikoko Movement, the Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth, the Ijaw National Congress, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) and the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force led by Mujahid Asari Dokubo.

As a result of the recommendations of the Henry Willink Commission of Inquiry set up by the British colonial government on September 26, 1957 that the Niger Delta people were “poor, backward and neglected” and should be on the concurrent list as a “special area” needing special attention, the government established the Niger Delta Development Board (NDDB).

The board was assigned the responsibility of managing the challenges and the socio-economic development of the new special areas of Yenagoa Province, Degema Province, Ogoni Division of Port Harcourt Province and the Western Ijaw Division of Delta Province.

It existed for seven years  between 1960 and 1967 until it was replaced by a Presidential Task Force Committee that was set up by the then President Shehu Shagari in 1980.

Another major attempt to address the issues challenging the development of the Niger Delta was the constitution of the Oil Mineral-Producing Areas Development Commission (OMPADEC) in 1992 by the Gen. Ibrahim Babangida Administration.

Other interventions came in forms of panels, until December 21, 2000 when the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) was set up by ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo to “offer a lasting solution to the socio-economic difficulties of the Niger Delta” and further facilitate the “rapid, even and sustainable development of the Niger Delta that is economically prosperous, socially stable, economically regenerative and politically peaceful.”

So far, the interventionist agency has made some strides in the areas of infrastructure development and human capital development. But, at many points, its affairs have been dogged by internal feuds and opposing blocs of influence over control of its operation. Many of those who are statutorily meant to give it money to lessen the region’s burden are failing in their responsibility.

My final take: Going by the Bible, the truth should set people free once known. The people of the Niger Delta know the truth but unfortunately it has not set them free. Poverty has ensured they worship their tormentors; poverty has ensured they beg for crumbs from those stealing their commonwealth; poverty has turned them to beggars; and like true beggars, they seem to have no choice.

  • Truth in untruth

The past year has also seen a disturbing rise in arrests and intimidation of media professionals and activists in Nigeria. At least 10 journalists and bloggers were arrested in 2016, some for alleged connections to Boko Haram, in a crackdown that appears to have been orchestrated to suffocate freedom of expression.”

“In January, members of the Nigerian Army raided the editorial offices of Premium Times and arrested journalists Dapo Olorunyomi and Evelyn Okakwu. They were subsequently released, but the move sent a clear message to intimidate journalists and the media.”

Two disturbing quotes from the latest report by global watchdog Amnesty International (AI), titled: “The State of the World’s Human Rights.”

The AI picture of the state of Nigeria’s human rights shows that the Federal Government may well need one or two lessons on respect for human rights in a democracy. AI named Nigeria among the countries where governments responded “to legitimate dissent with extreme measures that had devastating impacts on the civic space.”

The group also said: “In Southeast Nigeria, security forces led by the military, embarked on a chilling campaign of arbitrary arrests, extrajudicial executions and enforced disappearances. Many individuals are still being detained incommunicado while state security agents have killed at least 150 peaceful pro-Biafra protesters.”

The country’s military authorities were expected to respond to the AI observations, and they did. They were expected to be defensive, and they were.

Denying the alleged killings, the Defence Headquarters accused AI of a “series of spurious fabrications aimed at tarnishing the good image of the Nigerian military.” A statement by the Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, described the report as “contrived lies orchestrated to blackmail and ridicule the Nigerian Armed Forces.” Finally: “The Nigerian military rejects this AI report in its entirety and appeals to all well-meaning Nigerians to disregard the report and discountenance its content.”

Questions:  What happened? What didn’t happen? For instance, the Premium Times incident did happen. How are Nigerians supposed to “disregard” and “discountenance” what they witnessed? If the AI report can’t be disproved in this regard, there may well be other provable instances.

Instead of maintaining an extreme posture by rubbishing the AI report wholesale, the Nigerian authorities should do some soul-searching. There is always room for improvement; but only for those who are teachable and want to improve. A wake-up call should be seen as a call for improvement. If there is no improvement, there will be negative reports.

  • The Strong Belt of Truth (4)

The first armour is the strong belt of TRUTH and the Truth is Jesus. He is the beginning of the full armour of God- You shall know the Truth and the Truth shall set you free; the Truth sets free from sin and makes one live a sin-free life as one follows Him. There is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. Salvation is in none other but Jesus. Sin is what makes it very easy for Satan to attack and defeat us. God who is all knowing, in His wisdom set a plan in motion to set us free from sin and make us overcome Satan. This plan is His sending Jesus to shed His blood for the forgiveness of our sins- so we can only overcome Satan and his evil, dark agents by the blood of the lamb (Jesus).

No matter how terrible your sins, Jesus can cleanse you because He loves you.

As a nation, Nigeria needs to be set free from sin. Our sins have kept us desolate, there are so many atrocities committed in the land daily. Hardship is never an excuse to sin; it’s not an excuse to cheat, kill, steal, live immorally, lie, etc. oh, that we would surrender to Jesus and cry out to Him to set us from the bondage of sin.

Are our sins too great for God to forgive? Does God not love us anymore? Why are we in this predicament and what is the way out of this biting situation in Nigeria?

Hear the word of God to Israel, “Come now, and let us reason together, Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” This is also the word for us as a nation.

Let us read the kind of life Israel lived, yet God gave them hope?

4 Alas, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a brood of evildoers, Children who are corrupters! They have forsaken the Lord, they have provoked to anger the Holy One of Israel, They have turned away backward. Why should you be stricken again? You will revolt more and more. The whole head is sick, And the whole heart faints. From the sole of the foot even to the head, there is no soundness in it, But wounds and bruises and putrefying sores; they have not been closed or bound up, or soothed with ointment.Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire; strangers devour your land in your presence; and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers. So the daughter of Zion is left as a booth in a vineyard, as a hut in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.Unless the Lord of hosts had left to us a very small remnant, we would have become like Sodom, We would have been made like Gomorrah.

10 Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of a city like Sodom; Give ear to the law of our God, You people likened to Gomorrah: 11 “To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to Me?” Says the Lord. “I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed cattle. I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs or goats.12 “When you come to appear before Me, who has required this from your hand, to trample My courts? 13 Bring no more futile sacrifices; Incense is an abomination to Me. The New Moons, the Sabbaths, and the calling of assemblies—I cannot endure iniquity and the sacred meeting.14 Your New Moons and your appointed feasts My soul hates; they are a trouble to Me, I am weary of bearing them.15 When you spread out your hands, I will hide My eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood.

16 “Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes. Cease to do evil,17 Learn to do good; Seek justice, rebuke the oppressor; defend the fatherless, plead for the widow.18 “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.19 If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land;20 But if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword”; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

21 How the faithful city has become a harlot! It was full of justice; Righteousness lodged in it, but now murderers. 22 Your silver has become dross, your wine mixed with water. 23 Your princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves; everyone loves bribes, and follows after rewards. They do not defend the fatherless, nor does the cause of the widow come before them. 24 Therefore the Lord says, The Lord of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel, “Ah, I will rid Myself of My adversaries, and take vengeance on My enemies. 25 I will turn My hand against you, and thoroughly purge away your dross, and take away all your alloy.26 I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you shall be called the city of righteousness, the faithful city.”27 Zion shall be redeemed with justice and her penitents with righteousness.

Do you see Nigeria in the above description? I do. In spite of this, God has not left us; the hope He gave to the Israelites is for us too. We need to seek God sincerely and repent of all our evil ways. He will forgive us and give us a new beginning, look at all the beautiful promises- if only we will hearken to His call- “COME! Let us reason together…”

Let us come together as a nation irrespective of our differences and call on the name Jesus to save us from our sins. We need to humble ourselves and plead for mercy, and decide to follow Jesus, so He can lead us to live in holiness and righteousness. Oh, how I wish for such a country that will follow God without oppositions. For righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people.  Nigeria ARISE!!!

  • Amaechi…Truth, transparency and fairness

    Amaechi…Truth, transparency and fairness

Writing about truth, transparency and fairness quickly reminds me of the Rotimi Amaechi era in Rivers State. The eight years rule of the Ubima- born politician was a memorable one.

Frankly speaking, it was the period underdevelopment paved way for development, it was the period when democracy was enthroned in all parts of the state, it was also a period that men, I mean men held the positions they occupied in high esteem with high regard to truth, transparency, fairness and accountability.

For sure, if we consider the success story of Amaechi in Rivers State every average Rivers man would concur that Amaechi drove Rivers State to a new destination with sincerity and fairness.

His modus operandi in governance was open, such that people could access his administration with ease. His penchant for transparency and accountability translated into so many visible projects he built while in office. His accountability theory pre -supposes the need to periodically update the people on how government is administered to them.

Amaechi’s aim of updating the people time to time on how funds were judiciously used was targeted at keeping the people abreast with happenings in his administration. It was a period when Rivers people in their numbers thronged the Alfred Diette Spiff Civic Centre to ask questions about their monies and how it was used to develop the state.

Amaechi’s government in Rivers State was a participatory government. Everybody was carried along in the scheme of things in one way or the other. The accountability forum provided ample opportunity for the people especially the down-trodden to rub minds with the governor one on one and chart the way forward for a better Rivers state.

Amaechi’s priority was heavily anchored on the welfare of the people. At the accountability forum, Amaechi would direct all the Commissioners and Heads of Government Agencies and Parastatals to appear before the people to give account of how they ran their respective offices with a view to improving on governance in line with the open policy of government which had no hidden agenda for the good people of Rivers State.

Then, despite his tight schedule Amaechi ensured that government business was not disrupted. All political office holders who served in Amaechi’s tenure were put on their toes to deliver on their assignments.  I dare to say that, Amaechi undoubtedly at the time ran the most responsible government in the country and his projects were greeted with accolades in all the nook and crannies of our nation.

Throughout his eight years reign as Governor, Amaechi rescued Rivers State from rot and perpetual decay. Even at the tail end of his administration in his second tenure when he was starved of funds from the Federal Government of  former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Amaechi ensured that projects started under his tenure were 90 percent completed before he left office in 2015.

It was in Amaechi’s tenure that the state introduced a compulsory savings of about N1billion monthly in her reserved fund for the rainy days. Amaechi was confident that the compulsory monthly savings which amounted to about N19 billion at a point was utilized for projects execution.

Then, despite his ordeal by those who wanted to strangulate his administration financially, Amaechi focused in serving the people creditably well with the funds generated.

“While saving the One billion Naira monthly, I knew that there could be a time when the economy of the country or state will be challenging, so, I started saving the money in our reserve fund. The approval of the 19 billion naira by the Rivers State House of Assembly from the reserve fund will help us to complete our projects”, he explained.

Amaechi never embezzled money meant for the development of the oil rich state. Under him Rivers State became the first to implement the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) act in Nigeria.

At a point, the Director General (DG) of the Public Procurement in the state was referred to as the alternative Governor by Cabinet members. The Cabinet members had wanted an amendment to that law, their reason was that the (DG) of Procurement refused to increase the threshold to one hundred million naira per Ministry. Instead he reduced it to ten million naira.

Amaechi had a ‘battle’ with the DG and World Bank who insisted that the Cabinet should not go for amending the law but rather persuade the DG to increase the threshold.  The Cabinet had attempted going to Court against the DG, the DG also tried to go to court against the Commissioners. A scenario of this nature could only happen in a transparent Government.

Amaechi said: “In fact, the procurement DG wrote a memo to me that I felt was very incriminating requesting that since the law requires the governor to take any commissioner who doesn’t comply with the Public Procurement law to Court that I should take the Commissioner of Education to court for not complying. The Cabinet members felt the DG was slowing the process of government.”

As a Federal Minister of Transportation, Amaechi has not done things differently when it comes to being fair and transparent in government business(es); He is still running a transparent government and uphold transparent leadership, which he believes so much and cherished.

At a function where he spoke about corruption in government, Amaechi urged Nigerians to participate in government by engaging political appointees on open government.

Amaechi said: “Please come to all of us in government, all the Ministers in government and engage us on open government. For me, for Ministry of Transportation any information you want us to give you, please write to us, we will not only give you, we will give you on time. This is because all of us that have become ministers have been entrusted by the president. His first policy is corruption; the second one is economic development.

“We have been appointed by the President to go and do those following things to ensure that there are funds that we save from the people’s money to develop the Community and the Community we have is the Nigerian community.

“Indeed, you are our leaders, we are here by the grace of God and by your grace and we believe that you have right to ask questions, we believe that you have the right to demand accountability from Ministers, we believe that nobody has the right to rise from just being an ordinary graduate of a University by courtesy of holding public office, he now owns mansions, cars etc.”

When leaders are transparent, it allows people to be objective in evaluating them. If a leader is transparent, especially during the worst of times, you actually strengthen your leadership.

Most of the people close to Amaechi are aware that their love for the Minister grew ticker because of his openness to issues.  Amaechi has nothing to hide. He believes that the truth should always prevail in all circumstances.

Amaechi also believes that openness can potentially avoid misunderstandings capable to fueling unnecessary tension. As a transparent leader, Amaechi has encouraged people to come around him and channel their issues because to him transparency is a powerful unifier that forces a team to work smarter together.

Amaechi knows that team building through transparency takes shape when he being the leader of the team openly discusses what he believes is the strengths and weaknesses of the Ministry. In his style, Amaechi allows everyone to openly share their views in other to strategically match people to handle certain assignments.

Amaechi believes in transparency such that his office is open and accessible to all regardless of tribe or party affiliations. Amaechi’s example will certainly build trust and should be emulated by leaders .He clearly understands that we are leaving in a society where people want and expect their leaders to be more proactive in meeting their needs,he could spend a whole day in his office attending to visitors particularly Tuesdays and Thursdays which are marked for visiting.

For Amaechi, transparency, fairness, truth and above all the grace of God are the reasons he is succeeding in his political race since he ventured into politics. Nigerians want to relate to their leaders, they want to know that their leaders have experienced the same problems and or how they have overcome personal hardships. Amaechi is working hard to do the needful in the position he occupies.

Civil Servants in Amaechi’s ministry have never had it so good before. The robust relationship that exists between Amaechi and staff of the Transportation Ministry cannot be overemphasized.

In a meeting Amaechi held with staff of the Ministry, he urged the workers to live up to expectation by discharging their duties creditably. Amaechi also urged them to support the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to succeed.

After his speech, many had taught that the meeting had come to an end but Amaechi would not leave without hearing from the staff. He threw -open the floor for questions and contributions and one after the other they (workers) started bombarding the Minister with questions concerning their welfare. But, before then, Amaechi had told them to speak their minds and jettison fear and inferiority complex.

“If you know me you would know that I like speaking my mind, I like speaking the truth and I like being fair and sincere. So speak your mind, don’t be scared of anybody, nobody will punish you for speaking your mind”, he said.
