TStv to begin commercial operation November 1

Telcomm Satellite Television (TStv) said on Saturday its newly inaugurated pay TV, TStv Africa, would begin commercial operation on November 1.

Its Managing Director, Mr. Bright Echefu, stated this during chat with journalists in Abuja.

Echefu said TStv would launch its services with about one million decoders nationwide.

He said at least 5,000 decoders of TStv would be released to the public next week for free, adding that it would use the first set of decoders with one month free subscription to test run its services.

He said: “Commercialization of our decoders will resume officially on November 1 and by that time, every part of Nigeria would have TStv decoders for people to buy.

“We are releasing about one million which can go round and our target for the first quarter is one million units.

“In every quarter we will bring one million units and we are targeting four million units within the next one year.

“I can tell you categorically that some decoders will be released next week for Nigerians to test and we are going to cover the 36 states of the federation.

“These decoders are going to be free and it close to 5,000 units to test and that will last for two weeks.”

Echefu said the delay in releasing the decoders to the public was to ensure that dealers were properly scrutinized so that the decoders do not fall into wrong hands.

He explained that the decoder would be sold to Nigerians at a subsidized rate.

According to him, the landing cost of the decoder is N28,000.

“We don’t want a situation where someone would pick our decoders and dump them somewhere.

“That is why we are very careful because of competition.

“We have received well over 6,000 applications and it has been overwhelming processing these people. But so far, we have been able to accredit more than 748 dealers and we have received applications from more than 3,000 of them.

“That is why we have not commercialized our services even though we are the ones losing because we have enough decoders to cover the whole of Nigeria.

“But it will be unfair with all the money put in for us to give decoders out and those decoders don’t get to the end users,’’ Echefu added.

  • Exclusive: Fraud Uncovered in Proposed Launch of Digital TV Services By TSTV

Exclusive: Fraud Uncovered in Proposed Launch of Digital TV Services By TSTV

The high expectations among Nigerians for an alternative to satellite television provider, DSTV has been shattered as the company that raised their hope, TSTV is unravelling owing to failure to obtain the necessary broadcasting and redistribution rights to the channels included its bouquet.

In spite of officially launching on October 1, 2017 as heavily promoted, potential subscribers were soon disappointed as only dummies of TSTV’s set up boxes were symbolically unveiled at the event attended by Minister for Information, Alhaji Lain Mohammed. Subscribers have been told to wait indefinitely for commercial sale of the devices.

The company, after the launch, issued a warning to would be subscribers not to pay for the set top boxes yet and to beware of scammers since it has not started selling the advertised devices. It said on its social media handles that “We wish to inform the general public that the commercial sale of TStv Africa decoders has not commenced and there is no request from TStv Africa to subscribers for payments of any kind whatsoever for decoders”
“The public is hereby advised to disregard any instructions from any person(s) to make payments.”
Details provided on its website indicated that “TStv Africa is a wholly owned Nigerian innovative Pay TV Operator with refined offerings of novel Pay As You View (PAYV) subscription, pause subscription, complimentary internet service, Video call and an array of amazing TV channels with premium entertainment, informative and educative programs that cut across all genres.”
But documents exclusively obtained by The Nigerian revealed that TSTV is promising Nigerians what it does not presently own or have a right to. Several content owners have issued cease and desist order to the company, which effectively prevents it from launching its much-advertised products.
beIN, a Qatar-based global sports entertainment group, which is the exclusive licensee of the broadcast rights to many international sporting leagues and other entertainment content, had written TSTV on September 28, two days before the launch notifying it of infringement on exclusive broadcast rights.
The letter, titled “Illegal Pirating of beIN Content Cease & Desist,” raised the issue of “Intellectual property infringement by TSTV”, which has 10 of beIN’s channels forming the bulk of its sports offering.
Turner Broadcasting System Europe Limited, Owners of a leading international news channel, CNN, also hit TSTV with a similar order one day before beIN. CNN warned that it has not given TSTV the rights to rebroadcast its channel as part of its bouquet contrary to the promotion of CNN on the new company’s website.
“The distribution and broadcast of this channel without authorization will infringe our intellectual property rights and constitute acts of piracy. This would amount to unlawful use, which will infringe the rights and harm the interest of our company, and cause us substantial prejudice.
“In this context, we invite you to undertake in writing not to distribute CNN, and not to use or reproduce the channels’ trademark on any advertising or promotional material.
“In the absence of your confirmation should you include CNN within your channel line up we will take the necessary and appropriate measures and bring civil and criminal judicial actions in order to protect our rights,” the letter signed by a Director, Eleanor Browne warned.
Meanwhile, a source in one of the regulators copied in the letters disclosed that there are several other cases and desist notices to TSTV in which the organization has been copied. The source, who does not want to be identified because he is not the official spokesperson, told The Nigerian that there is confusion as to why TSTV rushed to launch its services when it has no agreement with owners of the content it is promoting.

  • Will TSTV trigger competition in pay-per-view?

Will TSTV trigger competition in pay-per-view?

On October 1, a new pay-per-view Tv,TSTV, made its debut in Abuja. Experts say the new entrant into the industry may boost offerings in the industry. OLUFEMI BABALOGBON writes.

It took Nigerians 57 years to have Independence,” proclaims a poster on the Instagram page of TSTv, the new entrant in the Pay Tv Market.

On October 1, Nigerians, particularly on social media, celebrated the launch of the first pay-per-view multichannel Tv platform in Nigeria, TSTv.

TSTV did not only attempt to disrupt the market in the country but all over Africa, as its subscription is pay per view.

Though Mutichoice, the owner of DSTV and GOTV platforms,  said it would not operate pay-per-view, it had changed its marketing strategy, apparently in response to a threat by TSTV.

As TSTV was launching, Multichoice was unveiling its #GOTVMax, a bouquet with channels, such as Select Sports 4, CBS Reality, and Fox.

However, public perception seems to be swaying in favour of TSTV.

    Consumer perception

The consumer perception  details how the consumer receives a marketing message and processes it. TSTV’s messages, which are marketing stimuli, only came to be accepted after the consumers have sent the stimuli through their physiological and psychological screens. The physiological screens are the five senses and interpret the message to the consumer.

The screens evaluate the product based on self-interests and intrinsic needs. This is where TSTV got it right by bundling internet data with Pay TV offerings. Nigerians need two things to survive: cheap/free internet and electricity.TSTV is giving internet data as cheap as N300 for 1GB and 10GB internet free  monthly subscription!

The consumer has perceptual files, called the mind. The files are previous experiences of engaging various brands. This means the memory of using GOTV or Startimes exists in the consumer’s mind and the consumer will evaluate TSTV’s service delivery relative to these previous experiences. The perceptual files, also known as the mental files play a role in the consumer Perception process and the outcome can either be brand adoption or brand switch.

    The TSTV Movement

However, recent recession (2015-2017) has taught Nigerians that the best way to alleviate Forex pressure is to patronise“made-in-Nigeria” products. Also, series of xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa has impaired the public relations of South African businesse, such as Shoprite, MTN, and DTSV. Thus, Nigerians are happy to have an indigeneous brand playing in the sector.

The TSTV movement is the ordinary Nigerians giving support to the brand and often de-marketing other Pay TV platforms.

Bahdmus Hakeem, social media influencer and founder of @TheInfoNG,  tweeted: “The least we can do is to support TSTV. We cannot, I repeat, we cannot allow it to die like HiTV”.

Also, the government is supporting TSTV, by giving the company three-year tax holiday. This, the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed explained, was geared towards growing the creative industry.

With all these support coming from Nigerians and the government, experts said TSTV is starting on a good footing.

  • Meet the Face behind TSTV

  • Two content providers accuse TStv of copyright infringement

Two content providers accuse TStv of copyright infringement

Two international content providers, Turner Broadcasting System Europe Limited and belN, have accused TELCOMM SATELLITE TV (TStv) of infringing their exclusive distribution rights to certain television programmes.

They said TStv did not have the rights to air the Cable News Network (CNN) channel, owned by Turner Broadcasting System and the 10 beIN Sports channels it advertised on its website.

But responding swiftly on its Facebook page, TStv said the letter was fake and designed to create a bias against their product in the minds of Nigerians.

Turner Broadcasting System, in a September 27 letter to the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), claimed exclusive distribution rights to the CNN channel in English.

It said: “In this respect, the distribution and broadcast of the above-mentioned channel in Africa including in Nigeria has to be authorised by us in advance.

“The distribution and broadcast of this channel without authorisation will infringe our intellectual property rights and constitute acts of piracy.

“This would amount to an unlawful use, which will infringe the rights and harm the interests of our company, and cause us a substantial prejudice.

“In this context, we invite you to undertake in writing not to distribute CNN, and not to use or reproduce the channels’ trademarks on any advertising or promotional material.

“In the absence of your confirmation should you include CNN within your channel line- up we will take the necessary and appropriate measures and bring civil or criminal judicial actions in order to protect our rights.”

In its September 28 letter to the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), beIN claimed there was no contractual agreement between it and TStv that would give the company the license to beam its contents.

It said: “We have become aware that your company TSTV intends to launch a pay television service to subscribers in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa generally. Information about this service is contained on the website at htt-z tstvafrica.cbm.”

The Qatar based firm said it invests substantial sums in acquiring those rights, “which are highly valuable.”

“Other parties are not permitted to copy and re-broadcast belN Content without express authorisation.

“belN is also the owner of trademarks and other rights in the name belN and associated branding (‘belN Trademarks’). Other parties are not permitted to use belN Trademarks without express authorization.”

But in rejecting both claims, TStv stated: “We are not unaware of the messages circulating the social media regarding letters from belN Sports and Turner respectively. We wish to inform Nigerians once again that the letters being circulated are fake. They were designed primarily to bias Nigerians. Kindly disregard the said frivolous letters. TStv Africa… connecting your world!”

Last Sunday the Federal Government granted TStv Africa, a three-year tax relief and tax free dividends to all investors in the company.
