Tuface, women and more than one love

Innocent Ujah Idibia has become synonymous with the Nigerian entertainment industry for over 26 years. He made his name and fame with the moniker 2Face.

Over the years, his moniker has gone from 2Face to Tuface Idibia and now 2Baba.

The Nigerian pop icon and musician, who has won multiple awards, including an MTV Europe Music Award, a World Music Award, and five Headies Awards, has been the epitome of the phrase, ‘One Love,’ until now.

2Baba’s story is an old tale that rings a bell in every nook and cranny of Nigeria. He has had his fair share of everything from women to musical controversies and brushes with the government.

2Baba began his musical career officially as one-third of the foundational group Plantashun Boiz, which was heavily influenced by hip-hop, R&B and reggae, and was one of the first groups making new-school Nigerian music to achieve nationwide popularity.

As a solo artist, 2Baba took the new Nigerian music international with his 2005 hit, ‘African Queen.’

To date, the 49-year-old has maintained his position as one of the most respected artists in Nigeria.

In the same vein, if there’s one thing that 2Baba preaches at every given opportunity, it has always been peace, however, it’s pertinent to note that there’s relative peace in the marriage and home of the famed musician.

Though humble, generous and wise, 2Baba has failed to hold relative peace in his private life that revolves around his seven children from three women: Sumbo Ajaba, Pero Adeniyi, and Annie Idibia.

Not like his marriage to Annie had been a bed of roses, there had been several allegations of infidelity on the part of the ‘African Queen’ star at different stages of the wedding till its eventual crash.

While many were anticipating the release of another album, the singer greeted fans and music lovers with the separation from his wife of 12 years, Annie Macaulay.

Not only did he separate from Annie, he also announced his plans to officially get a divorce before tying up the knot with Edo lawmaker and politician, Natasha Osawaru.

After the announcement of his separation and impending divorce from Annie, the town has been agog with who is the new woman in his life. Not to allow rumours to spread, he took to social media to announce his love for Osawaru and plans to marry her off.

While there are unconfirmed reports that the singer is expecting his eighth child from Osawaru, mixed reactions have followed 2Baba’s recent announcements.

In his words, he stands by all his announcements despite causing a stir and is in love with Osawaru and hopes to marry her.

  • ‘I haven’t been a role model’, 2face apologises to wife publicly

Popular singer, Innocent Idibia, fondly called 2face, apologised to his wife, Annie Idibia, for an undisclosed reason on Monday.

The message isn’t coherent as the main issue has not been addressed.

However, from the looks of things, there seems to be trouble in paradise.

On his verified Twitter handle, Tuface admitted that he had made a mess of things and went on to say “sorry” as well as revealing that Annie had tried her best.

    2Baba wrote:

“I’m sorry to say that i have fucked up so much. i have fucked up as a role model as a father and as a husband. annie im sorry. i know u tried your best.”
“Annie u have been my pillar. efe u have been a wonderful manager and ig bro. my fans have beb …. .m m”

Hours before his tweet, Annie updated her Instagram story that reads: “be picky with who you invest your time in, wasted time is worse than wasted money” to which she commented that the most important lesson is learnt the hard way.

Who would have thought that she was referring to the turmoil in her marriage?

2baba and Annie started dating in 1999 but their relationship hasn’t been a walk in the park.

During their off and on relationship, 2baba got two other women pregnant and in 2012, they finally tied the knot.
Annie has two children for 2face while he has five from the other women.

Tuface holds charity concert to support UNHCR activities in North-East

As part of efforts to assist displaced persons, Tuface Foundation is organising a fund raising charity concert to support the activities of the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in the North-East.

Musical icon Innocent Idibia, popularly known as Tuface, made this known while briefing journalists on Thursday in Abuja.

Tuface said that the concert would take place on Sunday at Transcorp Hilton, Hotel, Abuja, and urged Nigerians to support the cause.

He said that 60 per cent of the proceeds would be donated to UNHCR to support its interventions in the North-East.

According to him, the humanitarian challenges in the North-East are enormous and a big task for the UNHCR.

He said that he had pledged his commitment to support the UNHCR in alleviating the plight of displaced persons.

The assistance, he said, would not be limited to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) but also to Nigerian refugees in other countries, who are victims of the Boko Haram insurgency.

The singer urged Nigerians to support the cause by attending the concert and by downloading his newly released song dedicated to the displaced persons as their ring and caller back tones.

“I am very proud to support the UN Refugee Agency at the forefront of the displacement emergencies.

“Who will support our brothers and sisters, if we don’t?

“I care deeply about the IDPs and refugees cause and I promised in February to hold this charity concert and this is happening.

“I am dedicating my music and talent to this noble cause and I challenge everybody to do the same; let us make Africa great again.”

Tuface said that visiting the North-East seeing things for himself, further made him to know the true situation in the region, which a lot of people were not aware of.

He commended UNHCR for its transparency and judicious use of resources for its interventions.

He also urged the government to do more in assisting the IDPs and to ensure that peace and normalcy returned to the region in due time.

In his remarks, Mr Jose-Anthonio Canhandula, UNHCR Representative to Nigeria, thanked Tuface for supporting the Agency’s intervention in the North-East.

Canhandula was represented by Mr Hollo Roger, UNHCR’s Senior Liaison Officer to the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Commission.

He said that with the global displacement figure reaching over 65 million, the needs were enormous while funding contributions were inadequate for the actual requirement.

“Unless we combine forces with the powerful voices of Tubaba and others, the begging bowls of alms will remain with us.

“In the light of the huge funding needs, Africa’s private sector can be key in by supporting UNHCR’s efforts towards refugees and displaced persons.

“The resources that this concert can raise will help ensure that displaced families are provided with shelter, water, health, education and other essentials,” Canhandula said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in February, the Tuface Foundation made the first donation of N3.5 million to UNHCR and promised to do a new song in honour of the refugees and IDPs.

The song was released on June 20 in commemoration of the 2017 World Refugees Day.

He further promised that 60 per cent of the proceeds would be donated to UNHCR to support its interventions in the North-East.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the concert, dubbed “Eargasm”, will feature other artists with tickets to be sold for the highest table at N3 million and the lowest for N50,000.

  • Tuface’s volte-face

    Tuface’s volte-face

WHETHER he is better known as Tuface or 2face, or even as Tubaba or 2Baba, Innocent Idibia is the popular and award-winning Nigeria musician who attempted last Monday to stage the ‘One Voice’ protest march in Lagos and Abuja to draw attention to the need for good and responsive governance, especially the mitigation of the economic hardship faced by Nigerians. Days before the planned protest, Tuface was embroiled in controversies with both the police and the Department of State Service (DSS) over the legality, timing and wisdom of the march. Both law enforcement agencies’ paranoid insistence that the protest could be hijacked by nefarious elements taking advantage of the state of insecurity in the country eventually led to the popular musician developing cold feet over the protest. Perhaps the security agencies leaned on him much more severely than they let out to the public.

Even when the presidency announced that they would not oppose the protest, admitting that citizens had the constitutional right to organise protests, the police in Abuja continued to insist that the protest was both unlawful and inadvisable. But after initially waging a campaign against the protest and suggesting that Tuface did not have the capacity to prevent miscreants from hijacking it, the Lagos State police establishment backed down in the face of relevant constitutional provisions and interpretation of the law. In the end, though the protest was less than successful, it went very well and peacefully too. In fact, the following Thursday’s Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) protest also went well, of course without the initial confusion and controversy that followed Tuface’s planned protest.

The details of the interaction between the security agencies and the 2Baba Foundation, which planned the Monday ‘One Voice’ protest, give a depressing view of the state of Nigerian democracy. First, both the Lagos and Federal Capital City (FCT) police commissioners announced their opposition to the rally without giving the matter any considerable thought. Then they began to quibble when they encountered vociferous and relentless public opposition. The Lagos police commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, came out to clarify that his reluctance to acquiesce to the protest was not really oppositional but merely a cautionary advice to the rally organisers to respect other people’s rights. No rights were absolute, Mr Owoseni had said. The FCT police command, which had tolerated and protected a few pro-government rallies by busybody civil society groups and rent-a-crowd coalitions, was even more forthright in opposing the rally. Finally, and as a face-saving measure, a presidential spokesman working in the vice president’s office sought to downplay the controversy by suggesting that the government had no reason to oppose any rally, including that of Tuface. In fact, they publicly and reassuringly received the NLC protesters last Thursday.

Speaking earlier on television, however, Femi Adesina, one of President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesmen, seemed to think that political opponents still smarting from the 2015 defeat, and other antagonists, haters and malicious professional grumblers, were behind the rally. It was even more incredible to hear him talk of the motives of the rally organisers. “Genuinely concerned people have ways to protest. There are millions of people who are with the president, and I believe that the people who are with the president are more than those who are not…If their concerns were genuine, once those who speak with the president say all is well, they (protesters) have to go and rest…” What this shows, not to talk of the antagonistic approach adopted by the police to deny citizens their constitutional rights, is that in terms of the attitude to democracy, very little has really changed from the authoritarian regimes of the military era. The search for true democratic leaders must therefore still continue.

But perhaps more poignantly, the holding of the protest march in both Abuja and Lagos, despite Tuface’s last-minute cancellation, is a study in courage and cowardice. Said Tuface: “On behalf of Innocent ‘2Baba’ Idibia, we would like to apologise to the fans, colleagues and everyday Nigerians who feel let down by the cancellation of this protest. 2Baba’s aim was to lend his voice to make the government aware of the growing discontent due to the wildly escalating cost of living for Nigerians in Nigeria among other issues. In line with the commitment of ‘One Voice’ Nigeria to ensure a peaceful and impactful protest, the 2face Foundation and partners engaged with the security agencies to resolve all major security concerns, but treacherous gaps remain that we are unwilling to ignore. The risk of hijack by various political and sundry interests’ intent on using the platform to drive agendas that we as the 2Face Foundation are not aligned with and therefore exposing protesters to high levels of danger is the main reason 2baba regretfully had to withdraw himself from the march. He has refused to inadvertently present a platform for mischief makers to exploit. 2baba would like to express his great regret over these circumstances to everyone who feels disappointed. However, he hopes they will agree that as he said in the video announcing the development; ‘no protest is worth the blood of any Nigerian.”

Tuface has stridently defended himself from accusation of cowardice. Many artistes and supporters have weighed in and also defended him, insisting that by bringing salient national issues to the limelight and inspiring whatever little protests the country saw on Monday and Thursday, his interventions were not totally invaluable. But, more significantly, the protests held without him, and they were peaceful and orderly. It was clear he underestimated the cost of political fame. Had he gone ahead, despite the law enforcement agencies’ intimidatory tactics and scaremongering, the march would have been more successful and the satisfaction he would have derived infinitely more immense. It is disingenuous of him to claim any credit whatever in the protests despite failing to finish what he started.
