Drama as Bauchi deputy governor, minister clash during turbaning ceremony

There was mild drama in Bauchi State yesterday as the Deputy Governor, Auwal Jatau, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, reportedly clashed during a high-profile event.

The incident allegedly took place inside a Coaster bus transporting dignitaries from the airport to the Emir’s Palace for the turbaning of former Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar as Makama Babba 1 of Bauchi Emirate, which also coincided with his daughter’s wedding.

The high-profile ceremony drew top dignitaries including Vice President Kashim Shettima and Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya.

Sources revealed that tension flared after Tuggar allegedly made derogatory remarks about the Bala Mohammed-led administration; a move that provoked an angry reaction from the deputy governor.

It was further gathered that it took the intervention of Vice President Kashim Shettima who stepped in and calmed things down.

The controversy intensified after the governor’s son, Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed, reposted Facebook updates hailing Jatau for “defending my father’s honour.”

The clash is believed to be linked to a long-standing political rivalry between Tuggar and Governor Bala.

Meanwhile, Jatau’s media aide, Muslim Lawal, has denied that any altercation happened, insisting the Deputy Governor is a responsible leader and would never act that way.

“No, no, no. How can the Deputy Governor slap a minister? I don’t think that ever happened in Bauchi,” he said, challenging anyone with evidence to produce it.

He maintained that his principal is “a responsible person” who would never engage in such conduct, especially in the presence of the Vice President.

When contacted, the minister’s media aide, Alkasim Abdulkadir, declined comment on the incident, saying that he was not authorised to speak on the matter.

Tuggar urges ECOWAS leaders to foster environment for private sector growth

Nigeria Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar has charged governments of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to create enabling environment for private sector to thrive.

Tuggar who gave the charge at the opening of the 93rd Ordinary Session of Council of Ministers of ECOWAS in Abuja on Thursday described the private sector as the driving force in the region’s integration process.

The Minister also stressed the need for a strong commitment to facilitating and improving trade within the sub-region.

Lamenting the current low trade amongst member states which hovers around 12%-13%, Tuggar urged member states to  leverage on the existing instruments to promote greater regional economic cooperation.

He said: “ECOWAS stands at a pivotal point in its existence. The region faces multifaceted challenges that can only be overcome through enhanced cooperation and a deeper common understanding among our Member States. It also requires assiduous statecraft and diplomatic nous.

“Our governments must continue to make concerted efforts to create an enabling environment for the private sector to thrive, as they are the driving force behind the economic integration agenda. And yes, sometimes integration poses difficult sovereignty issues. But in the long run, its for the benefit of all member states.

“Additionally, Member States must demonstrate a strong commitment to facilitating and improving trade within the sub-region. The current intra-regional trade percentage, which hovers around 12%-13%, is significantly low compared to other regions.

“We must therefore leverage existing instruments to promote greater regional economic cooperation, such as the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and the ECOWAS Investment Code.”

He also called for resolution of the non-tariff barriers amingst other.

According to him, “We must tackle the issue of Non-Tariff Barriers, operationalize and modernize border posts, and enhance the Joint Border Management process.”

He also affirmed Nigeria’s commitment to thr process, saying, “It is crucial for our private sector to have investments and partnerships across the region. Member States need to evolve mechanisms and strategies to sensitize both the government officials and private sector groups on the economic potential of our region.”

He also said he will personally lead a delegation of all West African Ambassadors in Abuja and relevant ECOWAS Commission officials for a sensitization program in Lagos that will serve as an Economic Forum at the beginning of the year 2025.

He explained: “This event aims to showcase the economic potentials of the region and the regional instruments put in place to promote trade and investment. Participants will also have the opportunity to conduct physical inspections of factories producing various community products traded under the ETLS. I urge other Ministers to initiate similar activities that will unlock our economic potentials and enhance business cooperation within our region.

“Creating trade and Investment opportunities will yield substantial benefits and position our community to reap significant rewards, thereby improving the lives of our populace. We have been trading with each other and investing in each other’s territories long before the advent of the modern Westphalian state system and its static borders. The kola nuts and livestock are living proof,” he added.

Diplomacy requires patience, not instant results – Tuggar

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has called for patience and long-term thinking in assessing Nigeria’s international agreements and diplomatic efforts, stressing that such engagements cannot yield instant results.

Speaking with  reporters about the outcomes of President Bola Tinubu’s recent diplomatic visit to France, Tuggar described the trip as a “resounding success” but emphasised the gradual nature of diplomacy.

“We shouldn’t view diplomacy and international relations as if it’s a marketplace transaction. It takes time. There must first be a framework, then agreements, and subsequently, collaboration between businesses”, he said.

The minister highlighted the government’s role in creating an environment where businesses can capitalize on the opportunities unlocked by international agreements.

He pointed to ongoing reforms designed to make Nigeria more attractive to foreign investors as a reflection of the administration’s commitment.

The talks also revealed Nigeria’s extensive reserves of critical minerals, including lithium, which Tuggar described as a “revelation” to the French delegation.

This development spurred President Macron to call for a new MoU on critical minerals to be reviewed by Nigeria’s Ministry of Justice.

Discussions extended into other critical sectors, including clean energy and infrastructure.

Tuggar highlighted President Tinubu’s interest in developing safe, non-military nuclear energy and solar power as areas for collaboration with France.

On security, Tuggar noted a shift in France’s approach to West Africa, with President Macron acknowledging past mistakes and seeking Nigeria’s guidance on counterterrorism initiatives.

“The French have acknowledged their past mistakes and recognize that Nigeria’s involvement is crucial to any efforts in securing West Africa,” he said.
