  • Update: Scores injured, trapped as building collapses in Ibadan

    A building collapsed in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Friday leaving some people injured and some others trapped.

    The structure, which was a three-storey building under construction suddenly collapsed and threw residents of Shogoye Bus Stop area, Bode community in the city into panic.

    The building was said to have collapsed around 5:54 pm while bricklayers and other artisans on site were rounding off for the day’s work.

    Nobody was confirmed dead as at press time but rescue efforts were ongoing.

    Four of those who were trapped in the rubble were already rescued by men of the state fire service and volunteer rescuers.

    The Nation learnt that some of trapped victims were making telephone distress calls from under the rubble. But when calls were made to one of the numbers few minutes after, an eyewitness said there was no response.

    The incident led to traffic gridlock in the area as motorists from Idi Arere and Oja ‘ba and those from Molete end of the city could not move freely.

    As usual, crowd of sympathizers swarmed the scene, blocking the road.

    Among those rescued are 42-year-old Olalekan Dauda, Tunde, Toheeb Gbadamosi and Rilwan Oladepo. Dauda said he was working with other artisans on the third floor when the building collapsed. He said he just heard a sudden blast and later found that he and others in the building were trapped in the rubble.

    Gbadamosi, 19, said: “Today is my first time of working at this place. I just came around in order to raise some money for my upkeep because things were difficult. I thank God that I came out of the rubble alive”.

    One of the firefighters who spoke in confidence, said: “We responded promptly to the emergency as we got to the scene about 35 minutes after the alert.

    “We are trying our best to rescue the victims but the challenge we are facing is getting the right equipment to lift the concrete wreckage. Another challenge is the time of the day; it will soon get dark but that will not deter us from doing our best.”

    Singing couple, Tunde and Wunmi Obe who won the Best Contemporary Afro Video for their song ‘Bianu’ at the just concluded Nigeria Music Video Awards (NMVA) have just concluded the video shoot for ‘Rise-Up’, a reggae-flavoured song off their ‘T.W.O. Plus’ album.

    Directed by the renowned cinematographer, Clarence Peters, ‘Rise-Up’ is an unusual style of music from the couple which they claim is for the enjoyment of all reggae fans in the world.

    According to the duo, “The song, ‘Rise-Up’ is for all reggae lovers out there. Though we are not reggae artistes, we decided to do something different for our fans and to celebrate all the great reggae musicians we have lost and those alive. You all are going to love the video and get lost in the feel of the music. The video will be dropping very soon.”

    ‘T.W.O. Plus’ is a 15-track album with singles such as ‘Green White Green’ ft. 2face Idibia, ‘Omonsa’, ‘Bianu’ ft. Floss, Rise Up, Ire ft. Brace, Ayanmo ft. 9ice and ‘Wedding Day’, whose video has won the NMVA 2014 award for Best Use of Costume. The album features production from elite Nigerian music producers such as Del B, Samklef, Papi J and B. Jay Productions.

    The couple, who are Nigeria’s most notable husband and wife act, first achieved recognition and public acclaim in the 90s and over the past two decades. Their creative collaborations have spawned successful albums such as ‘T.W.O 4 Real,’ ‘T.W.O. Legit’, as well as popular anthems such as 2005 releases like ‘Mogbomoya’ and ‘Adupe’.

    HAVING taken a two-year break from the music industry, Tunde and Wunmi Obe, popularly known as T.W.O, are set to drop two new singles, Green White Green and Wedding Day, on June 1.

    The single, ‘Green White Green’ features pop icon 2Face Idibia.

    According to them, they decided to lend their voices to the gospel of peace, safety and oneness, in view of the prevailing socio-economic situations in the country.

    “Both singles are to be released on June 1. We hope to excite existing T.W.O fans and attract new ones with the type of songs T.W.O is known for,” Wunmi stated.

    The couple started as lead singers in a campus band, Turning point, in the 1980s. They, however, became popular with their weekly television segment, Zoom Time, on the Charly Boy Show, before finally giving full attention to their musical career.

    In over 25 years of their career, they have released five albums and numerous singles, including Fine Bara, Adupe, Mogbomoya, Zombie and many more.

  • Tunde and Wunmi Fanimokun’s love story

    LAGOS governorship aspirant and economist, Chief Tunde Fanimokun, and his wife, Omowunmi, have been married for over 30 years and the marriage has been blessed all round. What many don’t know is that the couple met when they acted as husband and wife in a school play.

    As the story goes, they were both students at the famous Comprehensive High School , Ayetoro, Ogun State and both loved acting. In their school days, their teacher cast them as husband and wife in a Chaucer play. They acted impressively and that was the beginning of their love story. Cupid’s arrow struck while they were acting, but they both wanted more than what the stage play offered.

    Things fell into place for them; they completed their Higher School Certificate same year, and got admitted into the same university, University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, to study the same course, Economics.
