“I must commend the police and the police too should not be deterred at all. As a government, we are ready to provide the necessary support to ensure that those hoodlums are arrested and that the proper thing is done.

“We will give you every support to ensure you succeed as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State. For the Area Command Division and other security agencies in the area, we will give them the necessary support so that at the end of the day we will get the culprits.

“Knowing again that the Yuletide is just around the corner if the culprits are not arrested and brought to book our people will not come home. People are leaving the area.”

Updated: Tanker drivers burn two banks in Lagos

Tanker drivers on Wednesday morning went on rampage at Apapa, Lagos, and set ablaze two commercial banks – Sterling and Diamond.

The tanker drivers were protesting the killing of their colleague by a mobile policeman.

It was gathered that the policeman, attached to one of the banks, had accosted and shot dead the driver for indiscriminate parking and blockade of the bank’s entrance.

According to witnesses, the unknown mobile policeman had approached the drivers to give way to bank customers but they refused.

He reportedly fired several gunshots in the air but one of the bullets hit the deceased driver who bled to death.

While the policeman fled the scene, the deceased driver’s colleagues stormed Creek Road and stabbed any policeman on sight.

It was gathered that they injured at least three policemen, who were going about their businesses, before proceeding to set the banks ablaze.

Attempts by men of the Lagos State Fire Service, Iponri, who rushed to the scene to put out the fire, were rebuffed by the tanker drivers.

Our correspondent learnt that the firemen had to leave the area for fear of being assaulted by the drivers.

It took the combined efforts of policemen from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Area B command, operatives of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECEOFT and their colleagues from Nigerian Army Signal Corps to contain the situation.

The security operatives also prevented the rioters from setting a tank farm ablaze.

It was learnt that hoodlums attempted to seize the opportunity to loot the affected banks but they were prevented by RRS operatives led by the Commander, Tunji Disu, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).

A senior police officer who was ground said: “Those tanker drivers are very irrational. When the policemen attached to one of the banks shot at the tanker driver, they regrouped and stormed the bank in anger.

“They first demanded that the policeman who shot their colleague be released to them. When their demands proved abortive, they took laws into their hands.

“They contributed fuel from their tanks and set the banks ablaze. The entire situation caused a stampede as both workers and bankers scrambled to escape from the back of the bank to safety.

“The drivers were still on rampage in the first bank when they heard that the policeman had taken refuge in the next bank.

“Armed with that information, they simply went over to the said bank and carried out same carnage, irrespective of the presence of innocent bystanders.

“They also attacked innocent policemen going about their own businesses. They stabbed no fewer than three policemen who didn’t know what was happening.

“Six of them were arrested. The mobile man was also handed over to the DPO Apapa. Calm has returned to the place now.”

Reacting to the arson, Sterling Bank said the mobile policeman ran into it premises to avoid being mobbed, urging customers at the branch to patronage nearby branches.

The bank said: “An armed mobile policeman fleeing from an irate mob after shooting a tanker driver disrupted banking operations at the Sterling Bank branch on Creek Road this morning. He ran into the premises of the bank to escape being lynched.

“Security operatives attached to the bank disarmed and arrested the fleeing mobile policeman but did not hand him over to the irate mob.

“The mob got upset and attacked the bank with the intention of unleashing mayhem on staff and customers. The branch’s reception area was vandalized and set ablaze.

“The security operatives attached to the branch prevented the mob from entering the branch while evacuating staff and customers before the arrival of police reinforcement. The branch has been temporarily shut down.

“We wish to inform all our customers that normal services will continue at nearby branches and through all our electronic channels.

“Sterling Bank is working with security agencies to resolve the issue.”

  • 12 injured, motorcycles destroyed as riders, NURTW clash

12 injured, motorcycles destroyed as riders, NURTW clash

There was pandemonium at Igando, a Lagos suburb on Thursday morning after commercial motorcyclists and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) clashed.
At least 12 persons were said to have sustained injuries and several motorcycles destroyed in the fight that grounded business activities in the area.
Among the injured were Abdullahi Lawal who’s on admission at the hospital, while others are Saheed Ayanshola, Taofeeq Jimoh, Olorunfemi Shakiru, Segun Idowu, Abbass Ahmed and Kazeem Ramoni.
Trouble was said to have started after the NURTW increased the prices of the ticket for Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) including commercial motorcycles.
From a daily levy of about N400, it was gathered that the parent body increased the fare of motorcyclists to over N1,000.
It was learnt motorcyclists at Alimosho usually paid N50 tax security and ticket N200 on a daily basis until the introduction of the new rates which indicated that they have to pay N500 to the national NURTW and N200 booking tickets to operate within.
Angered by the increment, the motorcyclists’ union told their members to resist any attempt by NURTW officials to pay the levies, which did not go well with the latter.
However, the NURTW denied that the hike was over N1,000, insisting that the daily fares for motorcyclists at Alimosho was N600.
According to the union’s Secretary, Tijani Pekis, booking ticket was introduced in order to curb cases of illegal taxation motorcyclists were subjected to.
He said: “This is a case between a father and his son, which an adopted father wanted to hijack. It is a misunderstanding between the rank and file of the union and so we are meeting to resolve it.
“What actually happened was that some of our workers used the restriction of motorcycles to certain routes in the state to extort motorcyclists.
“They keep collecting money from them and these riders end up paying so much daily. In Alimosho alone, there are over 30 units and imagine how much they spend, laying N50 tax security to each one daily.
“At the end of the day, their interest is not protected and the money goes into private pockets. So, in order to correct that situation, we introduced booking tickets of N200 per day. With this ticket, an Okada can ply Igando to Egbeda and Ikotun, but cannot go to places like Surulere because of the restriction.
“At Igando, they protested and we reduced the amount to N100 per day, and then, the N500 daily paid to national, totaling N600. Still, they refused to pay. That was what caused the fight, but it’s being resolved because we are members of the same family.”
The Nation gathered that it took the intervention of anti-riot policemen from Igando Division and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) for the factions to retreat.
Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni and RRS Commander, Tunji Disu, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) were on ground and appealed to the parties to maintain peace.

  • Update: Police detain alleged wife killer in Panti

Update: Police detain alleged wife killer in Panti

The Lagos State Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni had ordered that alleged wife killer, Lekan Shonde be detained at the homicide unit, State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti-Yaba.

Owoseni gave the order Monday after the Commander Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Tunji Disu, an Assistant Commissioner of Police  (ACP) took the suspect to the command’s headquarters.

Shonde was alleged to have beaten his wife, Ronke Shonde to death on Thursday night, after which he ‘fled’, locking their two kids in the house with the deceased’s corpse on the ground.

The suspect, who has since been hiding, was said to have shuttled Cotonou, Benin Republic, Badagry and Ondo State since Friday.

It was gathered that he was convinced to come back to Lagos from Ondo State on Sunday night, where he had planned to flee the country from.

Shonde, it was gathered cried severally, insisting that he did not kill his late wife.

Although the police shielded Shonde from journalists, his friends, Sunday Nwobi and Gbenga Sholuki, who claimed to have known the suspect for decades, said he has never been a violent person.

They claimed that the suspect loved his wife so much that the family’s income was kept in her custody.

“At the moment he has nothing because even the money he makes was kept in an account the wife has access to. Even the ATM card is with her. Everything was under her. That’s how much he loved her,” they claimed.

According to Nwobi, he has been the suspect’s friend for 33 years, they both attended Ikeja High School, but he was a class ahead of Shonde.

“He has never been violent. I have known him for the past 33 years and I can tell you that he is a gentleman. He was in the same class with my immediate younger brother who has just returned from the United States because of this matter.

“He attended Ikeja High School. I have been in touch with him since the ugly incident and he sent me over 70 messages threatening to commit suicide.

“He told me he had quarrel with his wife on alleged infidelity. He said his wife confessed she has man friend, at her place of work.

“Lekan told me that he caught his wife talking to the man on phone and that she went to Abuja with her lover and they spent five days together.

“As the wife was confessing and begging him, he said he pushed her aside and went into the room to sleep. That he didn’t talk to her nor touch her because he was angry.

“Since he usually left the house early (5am) for work every day and returns around 8pm, he said he left that day as usual and that their eight-year-old son was the one who bolted the door, while he used his own key to lock the gate as usual.

“Lekan told me that he never knew anything has happened to his wife until he was called by his landlady on phone. That his landlady told him his wife had died and that he was a suspect. He said his landlady’s daughter also called him.

“He was on his way to the house but different people called and told him to run because police were in his house and they were looking for him as the suspect. That was why he fled.

“But as soon as he contacted me that same day, I kept telling him to come out. His aged father also told him to turn himself in and allow the law to run its course,” he said.

Similarly, Sholuki, who’s Executive Director, Campaign against Impunity and Domestic Violence said he came out for Shonde because he believed in him.

“Even as we were coming to the police command, he has spoken with his mother-in-law to notify her that he has surrendered. The woman told him that he has done very well for her family and that though they were pained, they have forgiven him and he should not think of suicide again.

“He also called his wife’s lover and told him he hoped he was happy now that he has destroyed his home. The man begged for forgiveness.

“When information came to us about what has happened, we told him to come out for the law to take its course. We have known him for a long time and he is not a violent person.

“We want justice. We are demanding a medical examination to ascertain what really happened. He is a family man. He cherishes his wife and says very pleasant things about her. All we want is justice. If scientific evidence proofs he killed his wife, then, he should go in for it. But what we do not like is his being condemned even before autopsy result comes out,” said Sholuki.

Confirming that the suspect was in police custody, Owoseni said an autopsy will ascertain the cause of death, adding that the police was yet to interrogate Shonde.

“As you can see, he has just been brought in. It is still an allegation and the police is not the court of law to pronounce anyone guilty or otherwise.

“He has turned himself in. I confirm he is in our custody. We will ensure we get to the root of the matter.

He shall be interrogated and investigation is ongoing. We cannot say for sure what happened but autopsy report will prove cause of death,” he said.
