    FG resolves passport printer crises in Atlanta, New York

    The Federal Government has resolved passport printer crises in Atlanta and New York Consulates for Nigerians in Diaspora to have seamless access to passport application process and acquisition. 

    The resolution followed the intervention of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, that the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) should immediately deploy machines and other equipment to the affected Consulates. 

     The Special Adviser to the Minister on Media and Publicity, Alao Babatunde, confirmed in a statement that the machines have been delivered and installed on February 18, 2025.

    Babatunde said:”Recall that some Nigerians in the diaspora recently called the attention of the Minister to the need for new printers to ease the process of passport application in the concerned consulates.

    “The installation of the new printers provides immediate relief and is part of the Ministry’s broader effort to streamline passport services in ensuring a more seamless application process.

    “The Ministry is committed to innovation and improved service delivery.

     “The installation of these new printers demonstrates our dedication to addressing the needs of Nigerians at home and abroad.

    “The ongoing reforms, including the Abuja Passport Personalisation Centre, and the expansion of contactless solutions to cover more regions will further enhance service efficiency.

    Civil Society applauds Tunji-Ojo’s reforms in immigration service

    A group, The Society for Governance and Accountability, has applauded Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo’s reforms in the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

    The group said NIS has undergone remarkable transformation under the leadership of Tunji-Ojo. 

    A statement jointly signed by Taiwo Olatubosun and Zainab Salawu on behalf of the group noted that NIS is experiencing new era of modernisation, accountability and technological advancement.

    According to the statement, one of the Minister’s most notable achievements was the swift clearance of a staggering 204,332 passport application backlog, which left thousands of Nigerians stranded for months. 

    The group said: “Through introduction of streamlined processes, increased staffing, and improved online application systems, passport services have become faster and more efficient.

    “In line with global best practices, Tunji-Ojo has also introduced contactless biometric passports, enhancing security and simplifying renewal processes. 

    “The installation of e-gates at major international airports is another groundbreaking reform, ensuring objective profiling of travelers and eliminating unnecessary delays at immigration checkpoints.

    A social analyst, Adewole Oluwasolape, said Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has witnessed major transformation under Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo

    A statement by the social analyst said since appointment of the Minister by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, NSCDC has intensified its fight against illegal activities, improved officer welfare and introduced key reforms to enhance national security.  

    According to the statement, Tunji-Ojo in a bid to modernise NSCDC, has overseen procurement of advanced surveillance tools, intelligence-gathering systems, and automated record-keeping platforms. 

    “Since August 2021, the NSCDC has acquired 8 armored gunboats, 179 operational vehicles, and 306 motorbikes to strengthen its capacity.

    “Additionally, 41,231 officers have been promoted boosting morale and enhancing the agency’s effectiveness. A new training curriculum has also been introduced to ensure professionalism and better preparedness for emerging security threats.  

    “Beyond security operations, Tunji-Ojo has reinforced efforts to protect the country’s agricultural sector through the Agro Rangers initiative, which provides security for farmers, farmlands, and agro-allied businesses. 

    “His support for the Safe School Initiative has led to the creation of the Special Female Squad, a dedicated unit safeguarding schools. 

    “Over 500 officers have been trained under this initiative to enhance security in learning environments.  

    “With these reforms, the NSCDC is becoming a more proactive and efficient security force.

    The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reforms of para-military institutions in the country are yielding the desired results.

    The minister said the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Federal Fire Service (FFS) have proven their mettle in national security architecture and framework for the country.

    Tunji-Ojo spoke yesterday at Chelsea Hotel in Abuja while addressing reporters on the achievements of his ministry, its agencies and departments in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu.

    The media briefing was attended by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani; the Comptroller-General of NIS, Kemi Nanna Nandap; the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Dr. Ahmed Audi; the acting Controller General of NCoS, Sylvester Nwakwuche; and the Commandant-General of FFS, Abdulganiyu Olola Jaji.

    The minister said the reforms initiated by the Tinubu administration enabled the agencies to play significant roles in combating banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, vandalism of critical national assets and infrastructure.

    He also said the reforms have provided security for farmers and miners to boost food security and improve Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

    Tunji-Ojo noted that through President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, sophisticated technology infrastructure was being deployed for border control and security, while reforms in passports policy had been standardised to meet international best practices.

    “We should be proud that we are Nigerians because we now carry the best quality of international passports. Gone are the days when you were asked to step aside at airports for verification and validation of passports. What we have now are of best standards, as acknowledged by international certification bodies. The passport regime of the present administration is a top-notch.

    “Besides, the technology infrastructure that the present administration has deployed in our airports to ensure seamless movements of passengers is unimpeachable, especially within the past one year,” he said.

    According to the Minister, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Federal Fire Service, (FFS) have proven their mettle in national security architecture and framework for the country.

    Tunji-Ojo made the remarks at Chelsea Hotel, Abuja while addressing newsmen on the achievements of his Ministry based on the performance contract signed by agencies and departments in his Ministry in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

     Comptroller-General of NIS, Kemi Nanna Nandap, the Commandant General of NSCDC, Dr Ahmed Audi, the acting Controller General of NCoS, Sylvester Nwakwuche and the Commandant-General of FFS, Engr Abdulganiyu Olola Jaji. 

    Tunji-Ojo said his Ministry also generated over 6.3 billion naira revenues to coffers of the government from applications for expatriate quotas, Marriages, citizenship and issues relating to worship, while over 53,000 personnel have been promoted in the para-military Services within the past two years. 

    “As we speak, there is no backlogs of promotion in all the para-military Services. We have cleared all. In terms of recruitment, over 10, 000 Nigerians were recruited into the Civil Defence Corps and Federal Fire Service in 2023 and 2024, ” Tunji-Ojo said. 

    The Minister said government decided to unify Visa approval Centre in order to reduce sharp practices and ensure sanctity, and security of the systems. 

    He said in 2023 over 1.8 million Passports were produced and sold out, noting that the deployment of contactless Passport solutions would move to European countries by February 2025.

    He said Nigeria would soon complete its personalised Passport Centres in Lagos and Abuja, adding that Nigerians in diaspora would enjoy personalised Passport Services in 21 countries of Kenya, South Africa, Sweden, Ireland, UK, Houston in USA, Jamaica, Turkey, Isreal, Saudi Arabia, UAE, among others by February 1.

    Tunji Ojo said the first Phase of deployment of e-border solutions and e-gates has been completed covering over 40 percent of the project, while the second phase would begin in earnest. 

    He added that the e-gates in Lagos and Abuja are now functioning seamlessly, while the ones in Portharcourt, Kano, and Enugu would soon begin operations.

    Speaking on the reforms in the NCoS, the Minister said rehabilitation and renovation works are currently on going in some of the 256 Correctional facilities, noting that Correctional facilities like the Ikoyi Centre would be relocated because of urbanisation.

    He said President Tinubu approved the upward review of daily feeding for inmates from 750 naira to 1125 beginning from this year, adding that about 3113 inmates have been trained in capentry, fish farming, and baking of bread and cake while over 50 inmates are currently undergoing academic studies in the National Open University of Nigeria.

    On the achievements of the NSCDC , Dr Tunji Ojo said about 1667 persons were arrested by Special Intelligence Squad in relation to oil theft and bunkering, while 78 trucks were impounded.

    He said the Corps successfully prosecuted 31 cases, while 34 were on going while 1069 illegal refineries were destroyed as well as 263 dump sites. The Mining Marshals, he said, also arrested 307 persons for illegal mining activities, while 133 cases were prosecuted and 215 cases are still pending in courts.

    The Minister announced that there is on going collaboration between the NSCDC and the Ministry of Power to address challenges of vandalisation of power assets, while the Corps also signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, to protect telecom infrastructures.

    The Conference of Civil Society for Transparency and Accountability (COCTA) has commended Minister for Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo for his bold reforms aimed at improving governance and accountability within the ministry. 

    The group said Tunji-Ojo’s leadership has been marked by transformative initiatives that address long-standing inefficiencies and systemic corruption, earning him both praise and resistance from vested interests.  

    A statement by the Director of Communication and Advocacy for COCTA, Amb. Haruna Abdulsalam noted under leadership of the Minster, Ministry of Interior has undergone significant changes, including clearing of over 200,000 passport application backlogs within three weeks. 

    He said: “The Minister has introduced a streamlined system to ensure nationwide uniformity in passport fees, eliminating discrepancies that previously favored certain regions. Dr. Tunji-Ojo has also spearheaded the automation of border security to tackle illegal immigration and smuggling while adhering to ECOWAS protocols on free movement. 

    “His efforts to rehabilitate correctional facilities, such as those in Kuje and Suleja, have addressed overcrowding and improved the treatment of inmates, reflecting a commitment to a humane justice system.

    “Critics, many of whom benefited from the corruption entrenched in the old system, have launched attacks aimed at discrediting Dr. Tunji-Ojo’s efforts. Allegations of misconduct, including identity card racketeering and lapses in border control, have surfaced, but COCTA and other supporters have dismissed these claims as politically motivated. This detractors are threatened by the Minister’s success in dismantling the structures that previously facilitated corrupt practices.  

    “Despite the resistance, Dr. Tunji-Ojo has garnered widespread public support. His swift reforms in passport processing and correctional services have earned him recognition, including the Public Service Person of the Year 2023 award by Leadership Newspaper.

    “Social media platforms have been flooded with praise for the Minister, with many Nigerians describing him as a symbol of hope for effective governance.  

    COCTA emphasised that Dr. Tunji-Ojo’s reforms are crucial for fostering transparency and accountability in the ministry, calling on civil society organizations to support his vision, stressing that no amount of criticism or distraction should derail the progress being made. 

    “As the Minister continues to implement reforms, his proactive stance on improving service delivery and enhancing Nigeria’s global standing signals a brighter future for the country.”

    Creative Industry Fund will boost culture, tourism, says Tunji-Ojo

    Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has said the Creative Industry Fund recently approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) will boost the country’s culture and tourism sector.

    The minister said the approval of the fund showed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to growing the nation’s culture and tourism sector.

    Dr. Tunji-Ojo spoke at the weekend at Okeagbe in Akoko Northwest Local Government of Ondo State at the 100 years anniversary of the unification of four communities into Okeagbe.

    The minister stressed that President Tinubu was passionate about the country’s value and unique image by rebranding the Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy (FMACTCE) to enhance national peace and unity.

    He said the ministry’s target was to foster culture and inclusivity by celebrating Nigeria’s diverse identity and empowering economic opportunities through the creative industries.

    Dr. Tunji-Ojo said: “The President has rebranded the Ministry of Creative Economy and Tourism, which has been living up to expectations, and the FEC has also approved the creative industry.

    Represented by the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Rasheed Badmus, the governor urged traditional rulers in the community to always showcase their cultures for the essence of promoting them.

    “We are happy that there is peace everywhere in Ondo State, for instance. Trace it from Ikare-Arigidi-Okeagbe and all other places. There is peace in the state.

    “We have four traditional rulers here, and they are all living as one. So, we want them to continue in that spirit.

    “The government of Ondo State believes in our traditional leaders. Once there is peace among traditional rulers, it will be easier for us to promote our culture.
