    Turkish, Nigeria trade hits N376b

The trade volume between Nigeria and Turkey has reached N375billion while the Turkish business community has restated its commitment to step up investments in the country.

The Association of Businessmen and Investors of Nigeria and Turkey (ABINAT) said Turkish businesses provide products that are not being produced in the country.

Its spokesman, Husnu Bozkir, said the Turkish community is in the country to complement the efforts of indigenous players.

He said: “We are interested in Nigeria because most sectors are not producing much. There are no companies producing steel, the item is basically imported, but we have about two, or three companies that are interested in steel production.”

He, however, lamented the deficit in power generation and requirment in the country, saying it is a major disincentive to investment in the country.

According to him, there are 25 Turkish firms in the country operating in foods, furniture, textile, construction materials, cosmetics and machinery sectors of the economy.

He said ABINAT, with about 140,000 membership, representing virtually every sector in the industry, provides a platform for importers to bring goods into the country.

“We have 140,000 members in every sector, so if you want to import anything from Turkey, we link you with producers, not wholesalers who will assist you in closing the transaction. That is how we are linking people to facilitate trade between Turkey and Nigeria,” he said, adding that the bilateral trade between both countries is now in excess of $2.3billion, or about N375.8billion.

He listed Nigeria’s exports to Turkey to include, liquefied natural gas, sesame seed, cocoa, charcoal and wood, while Turkey in turn exports construction materials, textiles, auto mobiles and power equipment to the country.

Bozkir, who spoke in company of three other members of the group, Yunus Emre Dogan, Principal Nigerian Turkish International College, Yavuz Zemheri and Cemal Yigit, said the Turkish business community has lined up two trade fairs for the year in Lagos and Abuja.

He said one of the Turkish firms has concluded plans to establish five textile industries in Imo State, adding that Turkish investments in Nigeria are employing well over 4,000 staff.

He said: “Our goal is on production of quality goods for which Turkey is wide known. We are not going to be merely importing goods to Nigeria. Rather, we are planning to establish more production plants in this country, to provide more jobs for the people and also enhance the productive capacity of Nigeria.”

  • Iraq to punish Turkey, Kurds over ‘smuggled’ oil — minister

Iraq will take legal and other measures to punish Turkey and Iraqi Kurdistan, as well as foreign companies, for any involvement in Kurdish exports of “smuggled” oil without Baghdad’s consent, oil minister said on Friday.

Abdul Kareem Luaibi told reporters the government was preparing legal action against Ankara and would blacklist any companies dealing with oil piped to Turkey from Iraq’s autonomous northern region without permission from Baghdad.

The Kurdistan Regional Government said last week that crude had begun to flow through the pipeline, and exports were on track to start at the end of January, inviting bidders to register with the Kurdistan Oil Marketing Organisation.

Luaibi said it was not in Turkey’s interest to jeopardise bilateral trade worth 12 billion dollars a year.

And that Baghdad would consider boycotting all Turkish companies and cancelling contracts with Turkish firms if the oil exports went ahead.

He also said the Finance Ministry had been told to calculate how much should be deducted from Iraqi Kurdistan’s 17 per cent share of the federal budget if the region failed to meet a government-set export target for this year of 400,000 barrels per day via the State Oil Marketing Organisation.

Preparations were under way, Luaibi said, “to raise a lawsuit against the Turkish government for allowing Kurdistan to pump oil through the export pipeline without the approval of the Iraqi central government.

“This which represents a clear violation of the agreement signed between the two countries governing the export of Iraqi oil through Turkey.”

  • NCPC to extend pilgrimage to Turkey, Uganda

The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), Mr. John Kennedy Opara has said the commission would explore the possibility of extending the scope of pilgrimage operations to Ephesus, Turkey and Uganda next year.

He disclosed this recently while hosting the executive members of the Knight of Saint Mulumba who were on a visit to his office in Abuja.

The NCPC boss informed the knights that the commission had extended the scope of pilgrimage operations from Israel to Rome and Greece. He explained that the commission would continue to explore the possibility of expanding pilgrimage operations by identifying worthy holy sites in the world where Christians could visit for spiritual rejuvenation.

According to the NCPC helmsman, “NCPC will be able to partner knights to include it in our pilgrimage programme next year.”

He adde: “The extending our pilgrimage to Uganda will not be a bad idea”, he assured.

He hinted that both the Christian and Muslim pilgrims enjoy the concessionary exchange rate of 146 naira to 1 US Dollar approved by the Federal Government through the NCPC and the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria and this has helped reduced the costs of pilgrimage packages. He, therefore, called on the church to fully maximize this opportunity to encourage their members to go on holy pilgrimage.

He intimated his guests that the commission has been airlifting intending pilgrims from about six to seven airports in Nigeria which has helped in reducing the stress the pilgrims go through.

Turkey move: Keshi happy for Oboabona

Super Eagles Chief Coach, Stephen Keshi, has spoken of his excitement at the transfer of home-based player, Godfrey Oboabona to Turkey side, Rizespor, although he would have wanted him for next year’s Africa Nations Championship.

SportingLife gathered from a top source that Keshi recognises that the player’s future is also very important.

Another delight for the coach was that Oboabona did not have to undergo any trial before signing.

“The coach is really impressed that Godfrey did not have to attend any trial. Like he told them before the Africa Cup of Nations, that clubs will come for them if they played well, and today we are seeing it coming to pass,” said the source.

The defender was one of Keshi’s revelations at the Nations Cup and would have been at the Africa Nations Cup (CHAN) next year if still with Sunshine Stars.

“But the coach equally feels bad that he is gradually losing some of the domestic players that would have featured in the Africa Nations Championship, he still understands that it is the future of the players that matter,” added the source.

Next year January, Nigeria will be participating in the Nations Championship which is meant for domestic players across Africa leagues, for the first time.

Last week, Oboaboan completed a 450,000euro move to the newly promoted side.
