  • Two arraigned for allegedly stealing cocoa

    Two men, Afeez Adegboyega and Ismaila Hamzat, yesterday appeared at an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing 81 bags of cocoa valued at N6.4 million.

    Adegboyega, 26, and Hamzat, 34, who are facing trial for conspiracy and stealing, however, pleaded innocence.

    Prosecuting Inspector Jimah Iseghede alleged that the defendants committed the offences on January 4, at Costain, Lagos.

    He said the defendants, who were assigned to deliver the goods worth N6.4 million,  belonging to Olam Nigeria Ltd., could not account for how they got missing.

    Iseghede said the offences contravened sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Magistrate Mrs. A.O. Salawu admitted the defendants to N500, 000 bail with two sureties each in the like sum.

    The case continues on May 22.

     

  • Two arraigned for attempted murder

    A 39-year-old woman, Ajoke Ali and a 23-year-old man, Ajadi Olayinka, were yesterday arraigned at an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for alleged threat to life and attempted murder.

    The defendants, whose residential addresses were not given, are facing an eight-count charge before Magistrate Mrs. O.O. Oshin.

    The charges bordered on conspiracy, stealing, forcible entering, malicious damage, threat to life, breach of the peace, assault and attempted murder, preferred against them by the police.

    Police prosecutor Ingobo Emby alleged that the defendants and others at large committed the offences on February 3, at about 10am, in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

    Emby said the defendants, of no fixed address, conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by assaulting Chief Don Chima, Don Chjima George, Segun Rasaq and others at De Lankaster Hotel Ltd.

    He alleged that the defendants wilfully and maliciously damaged a table, wristwatch, gold necklace and one iphone 7, property of the three complainants, valued at N5million.

    Emby also said the defendants threatened to kill Chima, by forcibly entering his house at 9, African Lane, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

    The prosecutor alleged that the duo stole wristwatch, gold necklace and one iphone 7, valued at N4million, property of Segun Rasaq.

    They were accused of attempted murder, by placing heavy stones on the heads of the three complaints, while they were kneeling down.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Mrs. Oshin granted them N200,000 bail each with two sureties each in the like sum.

    She said the sureties must be tax compliant and have their addresses verified.

    The case continues on May 15.

     

  • Two arraigned for ‘assaulting’ IKEDC official

    Two men, Saliu Mohammed and Hassan Bello, yesterday appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for allegedly assaulting an official of the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) with planks.

    Mohammed, 48 and Bello, 33, residents of Ojodu, Lagos are standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and assault.

    Prosecutor ASP Clifford Ogu said the defendants committed the offences on September 17 at their home.

    He said they conspired to assault Mr. Jimoh Joshua while he was performing his duty.

    “The accused used planks to injure the complainant,” Ogu said.

    He said the complainant disconnected the defendants’ power supply for indebtedness, but he got assaulted.

    “The accused threw stones at the complainant, who was on top of an electric pole, for disconnecting their house.

    “When the complainant descended from the ladder, they attacked him by beating him up and using planks to hit him, which caused him harm.

    “The case was reported and the accused were arrested,” the prosecutor said.

    The offences contravene sections 173 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Following their pleading “not guilty”, Magistrate Mrs. J. A. Adegun released the accused on bail in the sum of N50, 000 each with one surety each in the like sum.

    She said the sureties must be employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State government.

    Adegun fixed hearing for October 16.

  • Two arraigned for stealing phone, recharge cards

    Two men, Oribamise Sunday, 26 and Kayode Abayomi, 26, have appeared at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State for allegedly stealing and receiving phone.

    Prosecutor Johnson Okunade said the accused, whose addresses were not given, committed the offence on January 15, about 1600hrs, in Oke Bola, Ado-Ekiti.

    He said Oribamise stole Infinix Hot 5 Lite, valued at N46,000, MTN, Glo and Airtel recharge cards, valued at N40,000 and N86,000, totalling N172,000, property of Mr. Ojo Michael.

    Okunade said the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap. 16 Vol. 1 Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    He alleged Abayomi unlawfully received the phone from Oribamise, knowing it was stolen.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 427 of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    He asked the court for an adjournment, to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    Their lawyer, Mr. Yemi Adebayo, urged the court to grant the accused bail, promising they will not jump bail.

    Chief Magistrate Adesoji Adegboye granted each of the accused bail at N100,000 with one surety.

    He adjourned the case till June 13 for hearing.

    Two arraigned for alleged bag-snatching

    Two men were yesterday arraigned at an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court in Osun State for allegedly snatching a handbag containing items worth N240,000.

    The accused – Kareem Ibrahim, 22 and Olarinde Bukumi, 19 – are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and theft.

    The prosecutor, Duro Adekunle, told the court that the accused committed the offences on September 30 at 2:30 am at Anuoluwapo community in Osogbo.

    He alleged that the duo conspired with others at large to steal a handbag belonging to a woman, Adeleke Taiwo.

    Adekunle said the handbag contained cosmetics, gold necklace, driver’s licence, a voter card, wristwatch and phones, valued at N240,000.

    The offences contravene sections 390(9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun State, 2003.

    The suspects pleaded not guilty. Their lawyer, Mr. Babatunde Akinwunmi, urged the court to grant them bail on liberal terms.

    The Magistrate, Fatima Sodamade, granted the accused bail at N250,000 each with one surety each.

    She said the sureties must be resident in the court’s jurisdiction and provide evidence of tax payment.

    Further hearing has been adjourned till December 18.

    Two arraigned for cutting dead woman’s parts

    Two persons – a fake doctor, Ponle Adesoji and his friend, Nurudeen Ganiyu- were yesterday arraigned in court for allegedly cutting parts of a woman, Afusat Sakari, who died in a private clinic in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

    Adesoji (49) and Nurudeen (52) were arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault and impersonation.

    The charge sheet stated that the accused conspired to commit the alleged offence by cutting part of the victim’s lips, part of her nose, pubic and armpit hair.

    The charge sheet further stated that the accused committed the alleged offence on April 6 at Tinuola Clinic and Maternity Centre at Owode, Oluode area of Osogbo.

    The charge sheet reads: “That you Ponle Adesoji and Nurudeen Ganiyu, on April 6 at about 10pm at Tinuola clinic and maternity hospital did improperly or indecently interfere with the body of Afusat Sakari by cutting part of her lip, part of her nose, pubic hair, armpit hair and her hair.

    “That you Ponle Adesoji on or before April 6 with intent to defraud, falsely represent yourself to be a medical doctor and operate a hospital know as Tinuola clinic and maternity hospital without licence.”

    Police prosecutor Mireti Wilson said the offences contravened Sections 517, 242 (1)(b) and 484, criminal code cap 34 Vol. 11, laws of Osun State, 2003.

    However, the two accused pleaded not guilty. Their counsel, Mrs. Praise Ofoyeju, urged the court to grant her clients bail in a liberal term.

    She promised that they would not jump bail, if they are granted by the court.

    Magistrate Olusola Aluko, therefore, granted the accused bail of N100,000 with two sureties.

    The judge added that one of the sureties must be a civil servant with a minimum of Grade Level 4.

    He adjourned the case till May 17.

    Two arraigned for ‘public fighting’

    The police have arraigned Esther Johnson and Samson Salia, both in their 50s, at an Isolo Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, for allegedly fighting in the public.

    Prosecuting police officer Oje Uagbale said the duo constituted nuisance by fighting at Williams Ladega Street, Mushin.

    He said the offence contravened sections 54 and 166 (D) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State.

    Investigative Police Officer Usman Ocean said he tried settling the matter between them, but Johnson insisted she wanted the case to be taken to court.

    However, they pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Joy Ugbomoiko, granted them N100, 000 bail each with two sureties in like sum.

    She adjourned the matter till September 2.
