  • Four killed, two arrested in cults clash

    Four suspected cultists were yesterday killed during a clash between two rival cults, Aiye and Eiye, in Ajah area of Lagos.

    A source told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that two suspects were arrested by operatives from police Area “J” Command, Ajah over the killings.

    Sources said the cults had been at loggerheads over  supremacy at Sangotedo area of Ajah in recent times.

    NAN learnt that the suspected cultists used machetes and other weapons to inflict injuries on one another.

    “The police recovered  four bodies and deposited them at a public mortuary. Three cutlasses were also recovered from the suspects.

    “Security has been tightened in the area, with more patrol policemen deployed. The area is calm now,” the sources said.

    NAN further learnt that policemen were combing the bush on the road between Ogonbo community and Abraham Adesanya Estate in Ajah for more victims.

    Police spokesman Bala Elkana last night did not respond to calls and messages sent to him for the command’s reaction to the killings.

    The police in Imo State have arrested two persons for having a hand in the death of Eze Brendan Ibekwe, traditional ruler of Mgbe autonomous community in Orlu Local Government Area.

    The spokesman, Andrew Enwerem, told reporters that Ibekwe was assassinated on June 24 and his body was dumped on the Orlu-Owerri highway.

    Enwerem said the Commissioner of Police, Dasuki Galadanchi, had directed the command’s Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department to take over the matter.

    Chairman of the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Samuel Ohiri, described the incident as a sacrilege. He called for a thorough investigation of the matter.

  • Two arrested for defiling girl in Ogun

    THe police have arrested two people for defiling 14-year-old girl in Obantoko, Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State.

    Abiodun Ishola, 19 and Kehinde Oloyede, 18, were arrested on Saturday following a complaint by the victim, who claimed to be a hairdressing apprentice.

    The victim was going to her boss’ shop.  Abiodun, who was sitting in front of his father’s house told her about the ongoing environmental sanitation exercise in the state and advised her to wait in his father’s house pending when the sanitation would be over.

    It was learnt that while the waiting lasted, Abiodun, cleverly took her bag and kept it inside a room but when the girl wanted to leave, he told her to go pick her bag from the room, not knowing that his friend Kehinde, was lurking around. The duo forcefully defiled her.

    Police spokesperson Abimbola Oyeyemi, said it was the screaming of the girl that attracted people who rescued her.

    Oyeyemi said the Divisional Police Officer, Obantoko Division, Veronica Osakwe, and some detectives on receiving the complaint, went to the scene and arrested Isola and Oloyede.

    According to Oyeyemi, the suspects had confessed to committing the crime while the victim has been taken to the general hospital for medical examination.

    The suspects would be transferred to the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labour Unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and prosecution.

    Two arrested for ‘child trafficking’

    The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two persons – Friday Edet and Ezekiel Ubong – in Onitsha for suspected child trafficking.

    The suspects allegedly specialise in abducting children for alms begging. Edet and Ubong, both from Akwa Ibom State, are members of a humanitarian group. They are at the Onitsha prisons while awaiting trial.

    According to the Divisional Police officer (DPO) in charge of Fegge Division, Rainy Garba, the group specialised in parading children with different ailments, while using them to beg for alms at locations different from their states, after inflicting on them strange ailments that attract public empathy.

    Six men, having hernia, and a three-year-old girl with cancer of the lips, were rescued. They have been reunited with their families.

    The victims, according to Garba, were treated by the division.

    He said: “The girl was kidnapped from Buruku, Benue State, during a wake, when she was a year and six months

    “The suspects’ mode of operation was luring their victims with cash gifts, which led to the arrest of the duo. Their accomplices are still at large.”

    The suspects, according to him, said the victims make about N25,000 daily. Before their arrest about 8am, they had made N12,800 already.

    The Delta State Police Command says it has arrested two suspected ritualists for allegedly strangulating a 74-year-old grandmother.

    The suspects buried the deceased in a shallow grave behind her shop at former Toll Gate in Asaba, the state capital, the police said.

    Its spokesman, Andrew Aniamaka, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP) said the suspects were apprehended following a tip-off.

    He said the suspects live in Omeregboma and Odozi Obodo market axis in Oshimili South Local Government Area.

    “The two suspects strangled the victim to death and later buried her in a shallow grave close to her store near the former Toll Gate,” Aniamaka said.

    In a related development, the police have arrested a 38-year-old commercial bus driver for allegedly raping a 29-year-old woman.

    Aniamaka said the suspect was in police custody.

    He said the victim boarded a commercial bus from Onitsha to Asaba en route Olomoro, Isoko South Local Government Area.

    He said the victim boarded the bus at about 9.30 am, but on getting to Koka junction in Asaba, the driver prevailed on her to spend the night in his room because it was too late to continue the journey to Olomoro.

    “On getting to Aniamaka’s residence, he tied the victim’s hands with a cloth, started the electricity generating set and increasing the volume of his stereo system before raping her. The victim escaped from the house while the suspect was in deep sleep and reported the matter to the local vigilance group in the area,” he said.

    Officials of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) yesterday arrested two suspected kidnappers who attempted to abduct a minor.

    The incident occurred at 90, Oyewole Road, Orile Agege, around 9am.

    It was gathered that the suspects, Muritala Lado and one Bassey, lured their two-year-old victim, Darasimi Tijani, with a N50.

    Bassey was said to have disguised as a madman but later opened up that he was sane.

    A source said the minor’s guardian, Fathimo Balogun, was distracted by the cries of other kids when the suspects made their move.

    According to LNSC, they were sighted by a passer-by who raised the alarm, prompting residents to descend on them.

    LNSC officials, it was learnt, who were driving by, stopped the mob from lynching the suspects.

    It was gathered that the suspects confessed to have been into kidnapping of minors, adding that they sold each kid for N10,000.

    They allegedly confessed that they used N50 and honey to lure their victims.

    Confirming the incident, the agency’s Chairman, Israel Ajao, a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) said the suspects had been taken to the LNSC’s headquarters in Bolade, Oshodi, for further investigation.

    He said: “We rescued the boy. He was taken to our station at Orile Agege with his mother, Wasilat Tijani and the guardian.

    “The kidnappers were arrested and moved to the headquarters. The suspects confessed to the crime and investigation is ongoing, ” he added.
