  • Two dead, scores injured in Ojo tanker fire

Two persons were killed yesterday when a fuel tanker exploded at Barracks bus stop, Ojo, near Mile 2, on Lagos-Badagry Expressway, Ojo.

Scores were injured and five vehicles burnt in the incident

The 33,000-litre fuel-laden tanker fell on a bad portion of the road and exploded when a container truck and three other vehicles ran into it.

An eye witness said passersby ran for safety.

The incident, he said, occurred around 8am, adding that the area was deserted for over an hour.

It was learnt that the fire was put out around 10am by Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and other security officials.

Another eyewitness, Mr. Ralph Nwafor, said the tanker fell in front of Ojo Military Cantonment, adding that the road was blocked following the inferno.

Nwafor said: “I saw two bodies burnt beyond recognition. A fuel tanker, a container and other vehicles were also burnt. Many people were injured as a result of the fear caused by the fire. People ran helter-skelter, they ran for safety. Those on okada were injured.”

He said although the road was under construction, the bad portion made the tanker to fall, resulting in the fire.

“The suffering here is too much. This is not the first time trucks will fall at the bad spot. A similar incident occurred here last year, claiming lives and damaging cars. The government must do something urgently about this road.”

Lagos Fire Service Acting Director Rasaki Musibau, who visited the scene, warned motorists to avoid parking their vehicles at the spot overnight, to avert fire.

In a statement by his Chief Public Affairs Officer Bola Ajao, Musibau confirmed the death of two persons and the wounding of five others. Witnesses said the injured were many.

  • Two dead, 200 escape in Niger prison break

Gunmen on Sunday night attacked the Minna Medium Security Prison in Kafin-Tella B, Tunga Local Government Area of Niger State.

A warden and motorcyclist were killed.

The attack happened about 8pm during a heavy rainfall.

The warden, identified as Shekarau, was said to be reporting for duty when the gunmen struck. He was killed with the motorcyclist who dropped him at the prison gate.

The prison’s spokesman, Rabiu Shuiabu, said the gunmen entered into the prison after exchanging fire with armed security men.

Shuiabu said 19 inmates who escaped have been rearrested.

He said: “The prison authority in Minna is profiling inmates to ascertain the number of escapees.

“However, normalcy has returned and security agencies are working to ensure that fleeing inmates are recaptured.”

The Nation gathered that 16 prisoners returned voluntarily.

Community sources said the gunmen ordered everyone to go into their houses.

Mohammed Umar, who lives close to the prison, said: “The gunmen came about 7.45pm in a Hilux van, a Honda Civic and Golf, and ordered everybody to go inside.

“There may have been more but those were the ones I saw. After we were ordered in, Shekarau came with a bike and they started with him.

“The shooting went on for more than one hour and we were very scared. Everywhere was shaking; it was difficult to identify the kind of guns they were using because it was of different sounds, some sounded like thunder. Even after the shooting, nobody could come out.”

Umar added that after the incident, some of the prisoners returned, saying they ran away to avoid death.

Commissioner of Police Dibal Yakadi said the 200 who escaped would be arrested.

Yakadi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN): “We are working with other security agencies to ensure that the runaway inmates are re-arrested.

“There is stop and search of vehicles, motor and foot patrols to ensure that we apprehend these inmates.”

  • Two die, many feared trapped in Lagos building collapse

Two die, many feared trapped in Lagos building collapse

Two bodies were brought out after many hours of rescue operation yesterday from a collapsed building in Lagos.

Many people were injured while 14 were rescued.

General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Adesina Tiamiyu confirmed the fatalities.

A four-storey building on Massey/ Carena Street off Campos bus stop on Lagos Island collapsed around 2.pm.

Residents said it was structurally defective, adding that a telecommunication mast was erected on the building two weeks ago.

Fifteen of them, including five children, were rescued around 6.30pm. It was gathered that at least five persons were still trapped under the rubble as at press time last night.

A woman who sells Amala on the ground floor narrowly escaped but her workers and some of her customers are among those trapped, sources said.

It was gathered that the woman stepped out of the shop few minutes before it crashed.

Another woman identified as Iya Ibeji is said to be under the rubble with her four kids. Residents said two women who sold rice and yam are also under the rubble.

Although LASEMA operatives got to the scene early, the crowd prevented them from working.

The crowd also threatened to deal with reporters, who attempted to record the incident.

The Nation observed that the crowd, which rebuffed rescuers’ entreaties from rescuers to leave the site, cut the ribbon used to cordon off the area.

The police and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) operatives could not control the crowd.

Emergency workers also had difficulty in rescuing the trapped victims because of the structure’s closeness to other buildings.

At the time of filing this report, excavation had started. One of the structures besides the collapsed building had been brought down. Electric poles around the structures were also pulled down.

Tiamiyu, who led rescuers to the scene, put the figure of those rescued at over 10.

He insisted that their primary focus was to safe life, appealing to the crowd to allow emergency workers do their jobs.
