  • Two die, scores injured in botched poll

Two persons were killed and over 50 injured last Friday during collation of primary election results at Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government in Lagos.

Rilwan Musa (a.k.a. Apata) and AbdulQuadri Adebayo (a.k.a. Uche) were shot dead when hoodlums allegedly working for a party leader opened fire during collation of results of House of Assembly primary organised by All Progressives Congress (APC).

The aspirants are a former lawmaker, who is seeking a return to the chamber, Abdoulbaq Ladi Balogun and Fatai Olatunji Oluwa.

Results from the nine wards showed that Balogun scored 2,277 votes to defeat Oluwa, who got 893 votes.

Reacting to the results, the party leader was allegedly heard ordering the hoodlums to “shoot-at-sight.”

“Immediately, the man gave the order, the hoodlums opened fire on everybody inside the council secretariat. People  scampered for safety. Many, who sustained gunshot injuries, were taken to hospitals. Unfortunately, all hospitals, including private ones, were not opened. Some were taken to traditional medical attendants to remove the bullets, others were rushed to medical centres outside the council’s coverage area,” Abdullahi Omobolaji said.

The Nation learnt yesterday Musa died in front of Ajeromi Police Station, while Adebayo died in Lagos Island General Hospital.

Musa Abubakar, who was at the council, said he overheard the leader ordering his boys to shoot.

Abubakar said: “We were protesting that the victory of Balogun should not be subverted. We have the results of the wards, which showed that Balogun won the primary election. Those hoodlums were at the council secretariat with broken bottles, cutlasses and knives. They threatened everybody, but many did not panic. Later I saw the party leader on a motorcycle telling one of the hoodlums  on the phone to “shoot-at-sight.”

“Immediately, another person who heard him, sent a message to different WhatsApp groups that the man just ordered his boys to shoot people that gathered at the council secretariat. That was around 3 pm. Not quite long, we just heard the sound of gun and people started running. Bullets hit many of them.”

The late Musa’s brother, Adi Azeez, said after retrieving Musa’s body from the spot near the police station, he was taken to hospital with the hope that he could be revived.

“I was here in Alayabiagba when they brought him (Musa) and we took him to the General Hospital. We asked after the doctor, but the nurses said he was not around. There, it was confirmed that Musa is dead. We saw Adebayo on the floor writhing in pains, we quickly took him to other hospitals, but we were not attended to. We even went to Ajifat Hospital at Orege; no one attended to us in all the hospitals in Ajegunle.

“We later took Adebayo to Lagos Island General Hospital where we were attended to. At the hospital, the doctor told us that he would have to perform surgery on him. They were about taking him to the theatre, but he died,” Azeez said yesterday.

  • Oranmiyan festival: two die, one injured as police arrest PDP senatorial aspirant

A senatorial aspirant of Oyo Central Senatorial District on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bisi Ilaka and one of his security details were yesterday arrested by men of the Oyo State police command over the shooting of two persons in Oyo town.

The incident that led to the death of the persons was said to have occurred during the grand finale of the annual Oranmiyan festival, held at the palace of Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III.

Source privy to the incident said the PDP senatorial candidate in the 2015 election had visited the palace to grave the annual celebration before a trigger-happy security aide mistakenly shot at a man and woman while trying to disperse some touts who had followed his car at about the time he was leaving the venue of the event.

The source said: “The aspirant got to the venue, dressed in white agbada guinea material. Within about 20 minutes, he was about to leave when some touts rushed after him to collect money from him. As they were running after his vehicle, one of the guards in his entourage fired some shots from his gun and immediately a young man selling discs with a bag hung on his back was hit in the head.

“He fell down immediately and died. Another bullet hit another woman on her back and she fell down. She also died. Another woman was hit on the arm and leg and she fell. She was carried and rushed to an undisclosed hospital.

“Immediately the crisis erupted, the crowd blocked the vehicle of Ilaka and dragged him down, beating him. Some people rescued him from the angry mob later. But they descended on his driver. The driver was mercilessly beaten and he was stripped naked. He kept shouting that he was not the one that fired shots but just a driver.

“The mob kept beating him and he tried to escape, running back naked to the field where the festival was taking place. The mob still beat him till he fell on the stage before the dignitaries, where he was rescued by the policemen. In the melee, everybody scampered for safety.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Adekunle Ajisebutu, who confirmed the incident, said Ilaka and the trigger happy security guard have been arrested by the police, saying the security guard is not a policeman. He added that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abiodun Odude, has ordered full scale investigation into the incident.

The Ogun State command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has said two persons died on Tuesday when a commercial bus somersaulted on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The Sector Commander, Mr Clement Oladele, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta, the state capital, that the accident occurred at 5 p.m at Lamona Park on the expressway.

Oladele said the Volkswagen commercial bus, marked (Lagos) LSR 971 XG, had 28 passengers, including 16 females and 12 males as well as three children on board.

The sector commander noted that the accident was caused by a tyre burst which resulted in the vehicle somersaulting.

He said: “Two people died in the accident and their bodies have been deposited at Isara mortuary while the injured were taken to Isara Hospital at Ogere.”

Oladele urged motorists to obey traffic regulations and follow instructions from FRSC patrol teams and other sister traffic agencies.

He also urged motorists driving into construction areas to obey the maximum speed limit of 50 kilometre per hour stipulated on road signs along the corridors and avoid overtaking.

Also, one person reportedly died yesterday in two separate road accidents in Akoko, Ondo State.

The first accident involved a bus and a commercial motorcycle (Okada) rider around 9 p.m.

The Okada man reportedly had a head injury.

An eyewitness said the victim was taken to Ikare-Akoko Specialist Hospital by men of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in the town.

The hospital’s Medical Director Dr Wale Oguntuase said the man was brought in with a serious head injury.

He said the accident victim was immediately referred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) at Owo.

Also, FRSC’s Unit Commander for Ikare Akoko, Jimoh Basiru, said his men carried the Okada man to FMC at Owo where he was confirmed dead.

The second accident involved an oil tanker, which detoured while climbing the “deadly” Okerigbo Hill.

FRSC officials supervised the offloading of the product into another trailer.

They were said to have used a towing vehicle to remove the tanker from the busy highway.

Basiru warned motorists against night journey, saying it is too risky.

A spokesman in the community, Alhaji Ibrahim Kilani, urged the state government to level up Okerigbo Hill at Akungba Akoko, as it did at Oke-Alabojuto in Ikare Akoko to reduce accidents on the road.

  • Two die in Ogun road accidents

Two persons, including a woman, died yesterday in separate accidents in Ogun State.

A motorcyclist died in the first accident, which occurred at the Owode-Ijako corridor of the old Lagos-Abeokuta road.

He was reportedly knocked down by a hit-and-run driver atop his Boxer motorcycle with registration number (Lagos) QS291AGL.

It was learnt that the remains of the motorcyclist were kept at the morgue of the State Hospital in Ifo.

The second accident, which involved a Hyundai car, marked (Lagos) KJA256CK and a parked truck with registration number (Lagos) FST202XT, resulted in the death of a woman.

Two other persons were injured in the accident.

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) spokesman Babatunde Akinbiyi said while first accident was the result of reckless driving by a hit-and-run driver, the second was caused by a “loss of control”.

Akinbiyi said the “Hyundai car ran into a parked truck after losing control”.

He added that the remains of the victims had been taken to the State General Hospital at Isara, while the vehicles were towed to Ode-Remo Police Station.

  • Two die, five injured in Somolu gun war

Two men were yesterday killed and five others injured following a gun war in Somolu, Lagos Mainland.

The deceased, identified as Tunde Awokoya, 36, alias Chop-Up and Gabriel were shot at 34, Abiodun Street, around 10:30pm by  suspected cultists.

It was gathered that while Awokoya, a developer, was at a beer parlour, Gabriel, an hairstylist, was inside his saloon in the same premises when the bullet hit him.

The Nation learnt that six masked armed men had stormed the compound, firing sporadically. They allegedly shot a councillor but the bullet did not penetrate.

While two of the five injured, it was gathered sustained foot injuries and were rushed to the Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, three others were taken to an unnamed clinic.

However, the lawmaker representing Somolu at the Lagos House of Assembly, Rotimi Olowo said the mask men were sent to assassinate him.

According to Olowo, he was at the venue and left barely 15 minutes before the hooded gunmen struck, adding that those killed were his supporters, not cultists.

Olowo said: “That is my sister’s place and whenever I want to relax, I usually go there. I was there on Tuesday night and left barely 15 minutes before the incident.

“Those they killed were not cultists. They were my supporters. Chop-Up is a developer and Gabriel a hairstylist. It was not a cult war.

“My boys, who were still there, said there were six gunmen and that one of them had withered hand. Although they were all masked, my boys were able to see that hand and they knew who it was.

“They killed two persons and injured five others. Two are at Igbobi as I talk to you. I do not know where the other three are.

“But for divine intervention that made me leave the venue, I would have been dead by now. I have written a petition to the police for investigation, arrest and prosecution of those involved and their sponsors. Lives are involved in this and they must not be allowed to go scot-free.”

The council chairman, Abdul Hamed Salawu aka Dullar said it was cult fracas between Aiye and Eiye groups.

Dullar, as he his fondly called, said: “Those boys are cultists. They are members of Eiye and Aiye.

“I have spoken with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS). Let the police carry out their investigation and unmask who’s behind the crisis.

Efforts to get reaction from the police command failed, as messages sent to the spokesman, Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent (CSP) were not replied.

  • Sorrow, anger trail Lagos tanker explosion as two die in another accident close to scene

Sorrow, tears and anger continued to trail the tanker explosion that claimed nine lives and razed 54 vehicles on the popular Otedola Bridge in Alausa area of Ikeja on Thursday.

When The Nation visited the scene of the accident yesterday, many of the sympathisers and eyewitnesses at the spot insisted that the death toll from the accident was more than the figure quoted by rescue agencies.

Others said the casualties could have been fewer if the nearby Otedola Estate had not shut its gates against victims who sought refuge at the estate.

A sympathiser who claimed to know a woman who lost four children to the explosion lamented, saying: “Four children in one fell swoop? God! That is too much to bear for a woman. Where would the woman begin from, particularly now that she is older.”

An eyewitness, Mrs Adijat Okanlomo, said a number of deceased victims would have been saved from death if they had been allowed to move their cars into the estate immediately the fire broke out.

Okanlomo said: “A number of the victims died while they were trying to escape from the scene. Many of them ran towards the nearby Otedola Estate but the gate to the estate was shut on them and they were consumed by the raging fire while they were looking for escape routes.

“It was this same spot that another tanker explosion killed many innocent people a few years ago. A popular Yoruba actor and film producer, Alade Aromire, also died at this spot while he was trying avoid a stationery tanker.

“Government should stop tankers from moving in day time. If they are not stopped from travelling during the day, accidents will continue to happen here.”

Another eyewitness, Austin Okonofua, echoed Okanlomo, saying: “Had it been that Otedola Estate’s gate was not locked against victims who ran there for safety, some of those who lost their lives would have survived. Although it has become the habit of security men at the estate to prevent motorists from passing through the estate, in an emergency situation like that, they should have allowed them to pass through.”

Sulaiman Adamu, an operator of a commercial motorcycle popularly called okada, said four school pupils were among the casualties, adding that a woman was almost burnt to death while she was rushing out of her car.

He said: “I had just dropped a passenger at Isheri and the incident occurred while I was returning. Among the vehicles burnt, I saw a bus carrying school pupils who were returning from school at about 5.20 pm.

“The bodies of the pupils were still there when I left the scene yesterday. Four of the pupils were children of a woman who rushed there and burst into tears. She was being consoled by bystanders. The account of FRSC that nine persons died in the incident may not be correct because the children burnt to death were more than 11.’’

    Items found at accident scene

A Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) 2015 conference bag containing a brush, toothpaste, company invoices and a complimentary card belonging to one Uchenna Nwadialo was among the items spotted at the scene. Attempt to confirm the whereabouts of the bearer from the law firm of Emeka Ngige displayed on the card was futile. When our correspondent called the firm’s mobile telephone number displayed on the card, a female voice, who did not identify herself but claimed to be one of the partners at the law firm, denied any knowledge of Nwadialo.

“There is no such name among the partners here. I am one of the partners in the law firm of Emeka Ngige and I can tell you that we do not have anyone or lawyer bearing the name you just mentioned in our employ,” she said.

Although Nwadialo’s complimentary card claims he was the social secretary of the Lagos branch of NBA, with office at Lagos High Court complex in Igbosere, it was also difficult to ascertain his membership via a mobile telephone number on the card.

A male voice who answered the call placed by our correspondent to the number said the telephone number did not belong to Lagos NBA.

Other items found at the scene include the land transaction documents and invoice bearing the name of a man, Imoisi Julius Omoregie and his wife, Blessing Omoregie Imoisi.

    Another tragedy

While the evacuation exercise was ongoing yesterday, another accident involving a Hummer bus and Volkswagen Vanagon bus collided, killing two persons close to the scene of the tanker explosion at about 11 am.

The driver of the Vanagon bus was driving on the wrong side of the road on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and was running away from some law enforcement agents when it collided with the Hummer bus. The bodies of the victims and their vehicles were evacuated from the scene by rescue personnel of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

Director of Search and Rescue Operations, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Air Commodore Akugbe Iyamu, said the agency would ensure the injured are taken care of.

He said: “I am here on behalf of the Director General of NEMA, who has asked me to come here and express his sympathy to the relatives of people who lost their lives and those who lost their property to the tanker explosion. The DG has asked me to assess the situation and give him a report when I return to the office.

“You know that it’s NEMA’s responsibility to manage emergencies anywhere in Nigeria, and this is just one of them. When I go back to our office, we shall give our report to ensure that the injured among the victims are well taken care of or get relief.

“My job is also to see how my men have intervened in search and rescue operations in situations like this, and I am satisfied with the performance of our operatives so far because they have been able to coordinate other agencies such as LASEMA, FRSC and others to carry out rescue and evacuation exercise here.”

  • Two die in Ogun pipeline explosion

Two persons suspected to be filling station owners in Ogun State have died and another severely burnt in a pipeline explosion from a vandalised pipeline of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

It was not clear what the victims were doing at the location when fire erupted from the pipeline.

The Nation gathered the one who suffered burns was receiving treatment at a specialist hospital in Sagamu.

The vandalised NNPC pipeline is situated on Ogere Expressway, beside the water corporation.

The Commandant of the state commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSDC), Ayodele Philip, said the explosion occurred early last Friday.

Ayodele said some workers of a private security firm contracted to secure the Ogere stretch of the NNPC pipeline spotted the incident and called the attention of NSCDC operatives to it.

He added: “A private security company detailed to secure the spot called the attention of the NSCDC officer in charge of the area, who quickly reported the incident and we swung into action.

“We were informed by a reliable source that the two men who are dead are owners of four filling stations. Another one, who was injured in the fire, Animashaun Abiodun, is at the intensive care unit of Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu.”

The NSCDC commandant said he had deployed his men to the black spot to provide security, adding that they had been advised to work in synergy with the private security company and NNPC officials.

He urged the public and the residents to provide credible information that could enable the operatives secure critical infrastructure in Ogun State.
