  • Two held for killing debtor on farm

Two men, Odion Monday, 29, and Fred Okoh, 50, have been arrested for allegedly killing Mr. Monday Omowua on his farm in Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

They allegedly killed Omowua for his inability to pay them a debt of N100,000.

Monday, who addressed reporters when they were paraded in Benin, the state capital, said Okoh killed Omowua.

The suspect said he only heard gunshots.

He said: “This man here (Okoh) is my very good friend. I went home to do my father’s burial at Uromi and this my friend, who is a property agent, told me that Omowua gave him land to sell and he (Omowua) later came back to collect the land. In his anger, he lured him to the farm to kill him.

“He asked me and one of his brothers to follow him to the farm, but on our way, he asked me to wait for him inside his car. What I later heard was the sound of a gun.

“I was not aware that he was going to kill him. He only told me that he was going to see him on the farm.”

Okoh denied knowledge of the late Omowua, saying it was Monday who knew the deceased and that he even reprimanded him for killing his creditor.

He said: “There is no truth in what he is saying. This boy is the person who knows the man. I do not know where he lived or his farm.

“He told me that the man was owing him N100,000. He asked me to follow him to collect the money and that he would give me a part of it.

“I did not know if he was holding a gun. So, when he met the man on the farm, he requested for his money but the man was quick to ask if it was on the farm the debt was taken.

“Before I knew it, he brought out a gun and shot him dead. Then, I asked him why he shot the man because of N100,000. He angrily entered his bike and drove off.”

  • Two years after, two held for Austria returnee’s death

The police have arrested two persons, Olakunle Ogunyemi and Anthony Bello, for the death of an Austria returnee two years ago at Iba Housing Estate, Lagos, during a fight.

Michael Chinedu was allegedly stabbed to death during the fight.

The late Chinedu had come home for his traditional marriage and gone to the pitch to watch a friendly match on the fateful day.

During the match, Ogunyemi alias Pedro and the late Chinedu had an argument that degenerated to a fight.

When Chinedu was gaining the upper hand, Bello reportedly intervened and stabbed him on the chest with a knife.

Bello and Ogunyemi immediately fled the scene, abandoning Chinedu, who died a week later in hospital.

Some Federal Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS)  operatives apprehended the suspects at  their hideout in Iba last Thursday.

Bello told The Nation on Thursday that he stabbed Chinedu in self-defence.

He said: “I went to play ball at the pitch when I heard uproar. On reaching the scene, I saw a man engaged in scuffle with Pedro (Ogunyemi). In my attempt to intervene, the man slapped me. He left Pedro and faced me. He hit me on the ground twice and used a tyre rim to hit me. In defence, I rushed to an orange seller where I collected a knife and stabbed him on the shoulder.

“I managed to escape from the scene and went into hiding, when I heard he was dead. In my hideout, I turned a new leaf and got married. I thought the case had died down since it has been long it happened. I was at home with my wife and child when the police came with Pedro to arrest me.”

Ogunyemi, 31, who confessed to being a cultist, said he joined Aiye when he was 17.

Ogunyemi said he was discussing with a friend, Lexi, when the deceased came and rudely interrupted them.

He said: “He came and said I should ‘free’ Lexi, so that they could leave the field. I pretended not to have heard him and continued the discussion with Lexi. He repeated it again and I asked who he was and where he was from. This degenerated into quarrel before Bello came.

“I did not know how the deceased died but all I could remember was seeing him on the ground because other boys at the field took me to a corner to pacify me and also prevented me from going where the fight was going on.

“As they thought, I would join in the fight. I later left Lagos for Ghana to hide for fear of being arrested over the death of the man. I stayed there for sometime before I returned to Nigeria, only to be arrested.”

  • Two held in Enugu for ‘fraud’

Enugu State Police Command has arrested two persons for allegedly using stolen SIM cards to defraud the owners.

Spokesman Ebere Amaraizu said in a statement at the weekend the suspects were arrested on May 18.

He said the police recovered 30 cards of telecommunications networks, belonging to victims.

Amaraizu said the suspects were arrested by operatives of Central Police Station, Enugu, who acted on information.

According to the statement, the suspects specialise in using victims’ SIM cards to access their bank details and withdraw their money. The suspects were identified as Abuchi Ogbu, 20 and Christian Mba, 21.

Ogbu is from Ndiagu Akpugo in Nkanu West Local Government and lives at 17, New Jerusalem Coal Camp, Enugu, while Mba is from Amechi Idodo in Nkanu East Local Government, living at 23, New Jerusalem Coal Camp, Enugu.

The suspects confessed to operate in three groups; one specialises in stealing phones, takes the SIM cards to Mba, who is a cybercafé operator, to access the BVN and other bank details of their victims and hack into their accounts.

The other group, headed by Ogbu, is to generate the PIN code of victims through the information gathered on the SIM cards.

The codes are passed to the person, who then accesses the victims’ accounts and withdraws the money.

“They have wreaked havoc on victims; the swindled their latest victim of N250,000,’’ Amaraizu said.

He said one of the suspects, Ogbu, pleaded for forgiveness and blamed the situation on peer group influence.

“The command advises the public to be security-conscious and ensure their electronic cards are kept safe,’’ the spokesman added.

SOME Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives have arrested two persons for allegedly killing a Taxify driver, Godfrey Ovie, after robbing him of his car.

Passengers book Taxify service online or through the phone.

Lagos State Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal yesterday paraded Simon Tyozemda, 27, and Lucky Friday, 24,  who were arrested on March 14, while attempting to commit a similar act on another taxi driver

They were said to have  killed Ovie and snatched his Toyota Corolla marked FST 663 EZ  last month  on Badore Road, Ajah, after booking for a ride around 2am.

The police have also arrested John Thankgod, and Mohammed Usman, described as  the middleman and the receiver of the snatched car.

According to Edgal,  the duo were arrested by his men before they could pounce on an Uber driver in a bid to steal his Toyota Camr marked APP1451EE last Wednesday.

Edgal said the police pursued the vehicle after sighting something that looked like a knife held by the passenger on the back seat.

He said Tyozemda had   booked an Uber pick up around 11pm, using an application on his lover’s computer.  Their plan, Edgal added, was to take the driver to a desolate place and kill him.

He said: “They were taking the driver to a lonely place on Lekki-Epe Expressway when RRS operatives stopped their vehicle for routine questioning. The officers noticed that the passenger at the back seat was hiding a long knife and the vehicle was stopped for a search.

“In the course of the search, another long knife was found. Investigation revealed that the suspects planned to divert the driver to a lonely place and snatch his Toyota Camry.

“Police investigation also revealed that the suspects were released from Kirikiri prison between last December and January and they had killed a Taxify driver through the same means in February.

“They snatched a Toyota Corolla from the Taxify driver which they sold to Usman for N350,000. Usman had paid N100,000 and was to move the vehicle to Jigawa State when RRS decoy team caught him.”

Tyozemda said he never wanted to kill the  driver but ‘’I did when he became stubborn’’.

He said he stabbed the driver twice and pushed him off the vehicle after the deceased refused to take the road they told him to enter.

The suspect said: ‘’ That day, I booked a Taxify driver to drive me and my partner to Lekki at about 9pm during which I sat beside him.

“When we got to a quiet place along Badore road, Ajah, I told him to stop the car and get down but he resisted and I stabbed him twice.

“I did not know he died until I was later arrested and the police told me that he died. We were remanded in prison custody but later released early this year.

“On March 14, the police stopped our car at Lekki-Epe Expressway and during a search two knives and indian hemp was found on us.

“I met my colleague, Lucky Friday in Kirikiri Prison. We became friends and when I was released I gave him the number of my brother for him to call me.

“When he was released, I promised him I was going to assist him to resettle properly. Since then, we have been working and operating together.

“It was the same business that took me to Kirikiri prison. I was introduced into it by one Michael. Unfortunately for me, I was arrested while Michael escaped. I spent four months in custody.”

  • Two held for alleged Indian hemp trafficking

Two held for alleged Indian hemp trafficking

Two men, Ismaila Aliu, 28, and Edwin Igwe, 39, have been arrested at  Seme Border for alleged trafficking of 20 bags of substance suspected to be Indian hemp.

Parading the suspects yesterday, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone II, Lagos, AIG Bala Hassan said they were arrested following a tip-off.

Hassan said the substance would be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). He promised to arrest others at large.

Aliu, who works at Seme border, said his work is to bring in contraband.

He said: “I bring in many things including rice, groundnut oil, turkey meat and sausage rolls. I was not around when the last incident happened. There are small boys who work with me. My role is to bring in anything their goods for a fee.

“That fateful day, they called me to come and carry goods. When I came I saw them with police and I asked what the matter is? They told me that what they carried attracted the police. I looked at the goods they were talking about and they looked like Bibles and others looked like video tapes (CDs). I tried to call the person who bought the load and told him that there was a problem and that he should bring money for the problem to be solved. I told him to bring N500, 000 but he brought only N480, 000. I also called the owner of the goods through my senior brother and he promised to make the owner come quick. The owner is an Igbo man. My work is to bring in contraband and they pay me there. I am not a criminal. I don’t steal rather.”

Igwe said he loads goods into vehicles for a fee.

He said: “I am based at the border between Togo and Ghana. We work for so many people, we are like agbero people and agbero people have no choice in the type of work they do so far it will fetch them small money for food and drinks.

“It was one Jennifer who owns the goods that asked me to give Aliu N480, 000. I was in Lagos when Aliu’s brother called me. He told me Aliu was arrested with Jennifer’s goods. Jennifer gave me the money to go and give Aliu to perfect the releases of the Indian hemp. Jennifer is a foreigner, a Ghanaian. She gave me the money to give Aliu and I was later arrested.

“I don’t know anything about the other goods from across the waters. I don’t know how to swim hence I will not be able to steal or smuggle anything through the waters. I am a mere loader. At times, I am paid N3,000 for loading contraband. I am innocent because I know that what they are doing is illegal but what I am doing is just to find food and transport money. Now that I know that it is an offence, I will not load contraband again it is just that there is no job.”
