  • Five pupils dead, two injured as car carrying school children crashes in Ogun

An unmarked Toyota Avensis car bearing female school children has crashed at the Olorunsogo stretch of the Abiola Way, an arm of the Abeokuta inner city roads, killing five of the eight occupants and injuring two others yesterday morning.

The car suspected to have been driven by a drunk driver, was sighted “speeding” and “driving dangerously”, which witnesses said led to a tyre burst before it crashed “uncontrollably” into a side of the road.

The Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps(TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the accident, stated that victims have been evacuated to the

    Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abeokuta.

Akinbiyi attributed the cause of the accident to “over speeding, dangerous driving and burst tyre leading to loss of control” even as he suspected that the driver, who had escaped from the accident scene, was probably drunk at the time.

“The number of occupants can’t be ascertained as at the time the rescue team got to the scene, but certainly there must be a driver who drove the vehicle and escaped from the scene.

“Number of people presumed to be involved in the accident is eight. The driver is presumed to have escaped from the scene before the rescue team arrived.

“Number of injured: two males. Five are presumed dead – five young females (between ages 11 and 22). Four other persons were later brought to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abeokuta, who were said to be in shock after receiving the death of the students,” stated Akinbiyi.

  • One dead, two injured as tricycle rams into truck

A Tinubu Magistrates’ Court yesterday heard that a passenger died, while two others were injured when a tricycle rammed into a stationary truck at Ajah near Lekki, Lagos last December.

The police told Magistrate A.M. Olumide-Fusika that the truck driver, Mr. Sesan Koiki, did not warn road users of the broken down vehicle.

Koiki, 29, was arraigned on a two-count charge of driving on the highway without a valid driver’s licence and failure to display reflective caution signs.

Prosecuting Inspector Ben Ekundayo alleged that Koiki committed the offence at  Pump and Sell, Ajah Road, in Eti-Osa Local Government around 10pm.

The court heard that the defendant, who drove a Mack truck with number plate AAA 148 XD caused the death of John Aboti because he failed to place a reflective caution sign to alert people of his broken down vehicle.

Ekundayo said: “The driver left the truck which broke down in the middle of the road at night without placing any warning sign on the road to alert other road users.

“The tricycle which the late Aboti boarded rammed into the truck because the tricycle operator did not see the truck in the middle of the road in time. The deceased sat in the front.

“He died on the spot, while the tricycle operator and one other passenger at the back sustained injuries.”

The prosecutor said the offence contravened sections 7, 20 and 42 of the Road Traffic Act of Lagos State, 2012.

    Koiki pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Olumide-Fusika granted him N100,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The case resumes tomorrow.

  • Two injured as hoodlums shoot at GNI’s campaign convoy in Ogun

Some people suspected to be political thugs yesterday attacked the convoy of the Ogun State governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Prince Gboyega Nasir Isiaka (GNI).

This came less than 24 hours after the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of the Southwest, Oshodi Glober Agboola, warned that the police would deal decisively with politicians and supporters bearing guns at campaign grounds.

The Nation learnt that Isiaka and his campaign train were heading to Ibese in Yewa North Local Government Area when the suspected political thugs opened fire on them, injuring two of his supporters.

It was also learnt that one of the wounded supporters of the ADC governorship candidate may have his bullets-riddled hand amputated.

But the state police command said it was unaware of the attack on GNI’s convoy since no one reported the incident to the police.

In a telephone with reporters, police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the command would investigate the incident when it is formally reported.

Oyeyemi said Police Commissioner Ahmed Iliyasu would not allow such incident to be swept under the carpet, if reported to the command.

Also, GNI’s campaign organisation described the attack as a “sad commentary on the worsening security and state of politics in Ogun State”.

In a statement by its Director of Media and Publicity, Bolaji Adeniji, the organisation said the attack was unwarranted.

The statement reads: “The GNI Campaign Organisation is using this medium to alert the good people of Ogun State and indeed all Nigerians about the unwarranted and orchestrated attack on the campaign convoy of the governorship candidate of ADC, Prince Isiaka, today (yesterday) at Ibese where two of our supporters were shot and are in critical condition while many other sustained critical injuries.

“We are shocked to note that this dastardly act is coming on the heels of a meeting just yesterday (Tuesday) between the Police Inspector General and the political parties on the need for everyone to maintain peace and shun violence before, during and after the elections.

“It must be noted that Prince Isiaka is a peace-loving man who has conducted the art of politics in a most decorous, decent and refined manner since 2009. Our principal always preaches politics of ideas and capacity. He detests violence and do-or-die disposition.

“We are, therefore, amazed at the turn of events where suspected agents of state will arm themselves with guns and other sophisticated weapons to attack a peaceful man going about his issue-based campaigns.

“The attack …at Ibese in Yewa North Local Government Area of the state is a sad commentary on the state of worsening security and state of politics in Ogun State. It all started with the destruction of our billboards and adverts materials.

“Now, it has progressed to dangerous physical attacks. We do not know who is afraid of the growing popularity and acceptability of GNI. We urge our opposition to work hard and test themselves at the polls, rather than resort to attacks and antisocial actions.

“We hereby call on the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, the State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies to look into the root of this matter and apprehend the perpetrators, as a deterrent to other.

“More importantly, we request more security cover for our principal, his family and supporters.

“We urge our supporters to remain calm and avoid reprisals on the suspected agents of the masterminds of this evil deed.”

Two injured, millions gone as tanker destroys building

A Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) tanker on Monday night ran into a building in Isheri-Olofin, Lagos, destroying property worth millions of naira.

The building, which is close to a filling station, houses The True Ark of Salvation, Aladura World Wide, a general merchandise shop, a warehouse and a computer centre.

The driver of the empty tanker was said to have lost control while trying to negotiate a bend. The tanker flew over the culvert, swerved to the other side of the road, and destroyed some street lights, before slamming into the building.

Residents claimed that they called the Lagos State emergency numbers and were told that fire fighters were on their way but no emergency rescue team had arrived by 11:30pm.

A commercial motorcyclist Saheed Olamilekan, said he had been following the tanker driver from Oke-Koto in Agege when it hit a vehicle and ran.

“I am an Okada rider and I have been following the tanker from Oke-Koto in Agege. It hit a vehicle and refused to stop. Instead, it was overspeeding and overtaking vehicles along the way. People told him to stop and apologise to the owner of the vehicle and give him something to repair his vehicle but he did not listen. I was surprised to get here and see this accident,” Olamilekan said.

Another eyewitness, Pius Akhilor, said: “I had gone to buy a torchlight but the Mallam did not have and as I was returning home, I heard the sound of the vehicle and as a transporter, I knew it was coming on high speed. So, I waited to see how it would negotiate the bend it was approaching on such speed.

“But before I knew it, he lost control of the tanker, crossed the culvert and ran into some shops. I waited to know the direction it would go so I could plan my escape. When I realised it was coming towards me, I jumped to the other side of the road and injured myself; my thighs and legs were bruised in the process”.

A resident, Casmir Onwu, who rescued the driver, said he heard the sound of the crash and on coming out, he saw people shouting and running.

He said: “I saw the accident and came to rescue the victims. I didn’t know people were inside the tanker but when I saw people shouting and running around, I knew I had to do something. I went near the tanker and heard a faint cry for help. I had to break the side window before I could bring the driver out; he was drenched in his own blood. I don’t know how many people were in the tanker but I rescued the driver.”

The building’s owner, Apostle Williams Akomolafe, said he spent a lot to build the affected shops. “A tanker belonging to NNPC rammed into my house and destroyed my shops. I spent a lot to build those shops and I will get my money back, no matter what happens. I will get my money by all means.”

Mrs Amaka Iloka, owner of the merchandise shop (Stages Link Int’l Ltd), said she lost millions to the accident. She said people came to her house at midnight shouting “fire”.

“I am short of words because millions of naira have gone. People came to my house at midnight and were shouting fire, probably because from the dust of the crash. A woman living close to the shop told me that everything in my shop was burnt and I said I had lost everything.

“The goods I have in that shop, plus those in the warehouse beside it, are worth more than N7 million. I just restocked last week and three days ago. Even the money for the goods I sold during the holidays is in the shop but everything is gone now; I don’t know where to start from because this is what my husband and I do to cater for our family. But I know that my God lives.”

Her neighbour, Mrs Victoria Fadipe, who owns the computer centre, lamented her loss.

Mrs Fadipe, who walks with the aid of a stick, said: “I own the computer shop that was affected. I had twelve computers, photocopying machines, printers, laminating machines, and others that I cannot mention now until my apprentice comes. And as you can see, I am not okay; I will have to go to the hospital tomorrow (today) because I don’t know what happened to me when I was told about the accident.”

A resident, simply identified as Abbey, a commercial driver, took the injured driver to the Igando General Hospital in a police Hilux van.

Abbey was compelled to do so because policemen arrested him and seized his bus.

According to him, the driver was injured on the head, face and hands.
