  • Two killed in Ebonyi rival cult clashes

Two persons have been killed in clashes between rival cult groups at Ezzamgbo in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The first victim, Anselem Ifeanyi Omah, was reportedly killed on Tuesday evening, while a second victim, whose name was given simply as Paul, was gunned down Wednesday night.

Also, in the aftermath of the shooting, at least eight persons were arrested over the death of Anselem.

The chairman of the local government, Clement Odah, regretted the killing of Anselem. He said the area had been peaceful since he assumed office.

Odah, who addressed reporters on Wednesday evening on the killing of Anselem before last night’s shooting of the second victim, urged security agents to arrest and prosecute those involved in the killing.

He said: “This media briefing is because of the current diversion from the new Ohaukwu Local Government Area. When we came in, we were confronted by two kinds of insecurity: the external insecurity, that was the war between Ngbo in Ohaukwu Local Government Area and Agila in Benue State.

“That one, to the glory of God, has been settled once and for all by the coordinated efforts of the Governor David Umahi through the inter-boundary committee, headed by Deputy Governor Kelechi Igwe.

“For more than two years now, we have not had any other problem from that axis. We have been enjoying peace.

“The second is internal insecurity from some misguided youths who were deceived over time to believe there is something good in belonging to illegal societies.

“There are many of them, but the most prominent is the bad society that is being churned out by our universities, that is cultism. I launched a decisive war against cultism from the first day I came into office as the council chairman. It was difficult, but by the Grace of God, we succeeded.”

The local government chairman described the slain Anselem as a peaceful young man. He blamed cultists for his death.

Odah said: “Before yesterday (Wednesday), I had boasted in many fora that we had won the war against cultism. That was true, because I refused to compromise. We have made it known that we have zero tolerance for cultism. So, for me, it was a shock when we heard around 10 p.m to 11 p.m that one of our sons was gunned down here in Ezzamgbo. His name is Anselem Ifeany Omah.

“It was a very big surprise and shock. But we swung into action immediately, alerting and contacting security agents from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and all other security agents, including the neighbourhood watch and the local vigilantes.

“While we bear the pain of that avoidable loss, we have certain consolation: we made it clear to the security agents that this is one crime that must be investigated. We made it clear to security agents that we are not ready to mortgage the peace we have enjoyed over two years for anything. We made it clear that the Umahi administration is anchored on the platform of peace. We do not want to tolerate any other situation than absolute peace.

“All the culprits who are involved in that crime, over 50 per cent of them have been arrested. As at the last count, eight persons were in the police custody.

“I want to commend the DPO of Ohaukwu Police Division. The operation started immediately and in less than 10 hours, majority of the culprits were arrested. While their arrest was effected, a lot of illegal firearms with which the criminals operated were recovered.”

Odah said all the suspects had been transferred to the state headquarters in Abakaliki.

“All the culprits are now cooling off at the state headquarters. The matter is being handled by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and we will follow it up to ensure that the culprits are brought to book,” he said.

Police spokesperson Loveth Odah confirmed the story and the transfer of the suspects.

She promised to brief the media later today on the incident.

  • Two killed as robbers attack bank in Ekiti

    •Monarch: it was a war-like situation

Suspected robbers  yesterday attacked an old generation bank in Ilawe-Ekiti, headquarters of Ekiti Southwest Local Government of Ekiti State.

In the operation, which lasted over one hour, the gunmen killed a policeman, Bayo, and a bank worker, whose name could not be ascertained last night.

Another bank worker was reportedly shot in the arm.

The robbery occurred barely a month after another old generation bank was attacked in Ifaki-Ekiti, where a police inspector was killed.

An eyewitness told The Nation that the hoodlums stormed the bank located close to the Alawe’s palace, about 2:45 pm, and operated for over an hour.

They reportedly blasted the bank’s security door with dynamite.

The eyewitness said the dynamite blew up a blue Toyota Camry car.

The robbers reportedly stole an unspecified amount of money.

The source said: “They just came suddenly and started shooting. Shop owners scampered for safety, because the shooting was deafening.

“After blasting the security door, they went into the banking hall and seized workers and customers. They stole an undisclosed amount of money.

“They escaped via Ilawe-Igbara Odo-Ogotun Road.”

Confirming the incident in a phone chat with The Nation, the Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Alabi, expressed shock at the incident.

He said the robbers turned his domain to a warfront by firing dynamite and grenade, which caused panic and paralysed activities.

Oba Alabi said: “It was a terrible experience; my palace is very close to the bank. It was terrifying, it was like a warfront. They detonated grenades during the attack.

“I was in the palace during the robbery; the attack happened less than an hour after a bullion van brought cash to the bank.

“We have been in touch with the governor and the police command.”

Effort to get the police reaction was not successful last night.

  • Two killed in Lagos cult war

Two killed in Lagos cult war

At least two persons were Friday night killed after suspected cultists clashed at Shomolu in Lagos.

The deceased were alleged to be a final student and a lecturer of the University of Lagos.

It was gathered that the incident occurred at Opayemi Street in Abule Ijesha, Akoka.

The Nation learnt that some cultists invaded the street around 11pm to attack members of another cult group.

In the process, the student identified as Rasaq and an unnamed lecturer were gunned down.

According to a witness, the fight was between cult groups at Akoka and Shomolu.

He said: “Rasaq was returning home after seeing his girlfriend off when they shot him. They came back together, he had his bath and decided to walk her to her place. It was on his way back that they shot him.

“The lecturer was outside his compound. He sat with some other men. Suddenly, the hoodlums, who rode on a motorcycle, opened fire on him.

“There had been fight between them. Some of those responsible for the fight were chased out of the community by the Baale. They regrouped and attacked themselves. I don’t think the two people they killed were cultists.

“Immediately they saw a van, they fled thinking it was police. People are afraid now. They think the Shomolu boys might return and launch another attack.

“The police came to the scene yesterday morning and conducted a raid. Some of those they arrested were later released.”

Confirming the attack, police spokesman, Chike Oti, a Superintendent (SP) said the command was on the trail of four major suspects, adding that they would stop at nothing to fish them out.

He said: “I cannot confirm where they (deceased) work or who they are at the moment. I can tell you it is true and that we are on the trail of four key suspects. The attack was hatched by some boys who were chased out of the community some years ago. We will get them.”

  • Herdsmen attacks: ‘Two killed, 30 primary schools shut in Ogun’

Thirty primary schools and several health centres have been closed in Ketu communities of Ketu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Ogun State, following attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen in the last five months.

Also, two persons – Mr. Olabisi Tangu Afolabi and Adegoke Olude – were reportedly killed and seven, including four women, injured in attacks on Ketu villages by suspected herdsmen between last December 10 and January 30.

In a statement yesterday in Abeokuta, the capital, by leaders of the community, Mr Michael Abiose and Mr Williams Olayode, the Ketu Advancement Forum (KAF), speaking for indigenes, regretted that Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s administration has failed to protect them.

Titled: Do Our Lives Matter to Ogun State Government? over “repeated murder of Ketu people and destruction of their means of livelihood by marauding Fulani herdsmen?” KAF noted that while Ketu residents and the police were working together on the matter, the residents could not remember any step the state government had taken to protect the people and their means of livelihood from the attackers.

The forum wondered if their lives mattered to the governor.

KAF said it remained resolute that “there is no land for open grazing in Ketu LCDA,” adding that the herdsmen have proved to be deadly and incapable of co-habiting with their host community amid shortage of farmlands, since the government has allegedly taken the chunk of their land for forest reserves.

The statement reads: “For us, as Ketu people located in Ogun State by God, the present administration under Governor Amosun, as the Chief Security Officer, has failed us.

“We (bear) great frustration and agony in our hearts because neither the governor nor his officials has done anything to rescue us from the renewed siege of Fulani herdsmen, who started (attacks) on our communities in October, 2017.

“Without going into the hostilities of over 15 years, all of which the state is well aware of, we like to tell the world that most communities in Ketu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) have come under renewed siege of Fulani herdsmen in the past five months.

“Our farmers have been sent away from their farms, over 30 primary schools have been shut down, health facilities closed and economic activities paralysed.

“The climax of it started on December 10, last year, when innocent aged women were attacked and macheted in-between Moro and Eegelu villages for their refusal to submit themselves to be raped by heartless herdsmen.

“Nine days after, on December 19, last year, the marauding herdsmen were out on their evil mission again, killing Mr. Olabisi Tangu Afolabi and setting his body ablaze at Oosada village. To add sorrow to the Christmas celebrations, they struck again on December 25, last tear, and murdered Mr. Adegoke Olude at Ogunba Ayetoro.

“However, with the active collaboration of our vigilantes, three of the suspected killers, namely Mohammed Bello (40), Muhammed Momoh (30) and Yisau Umoru (18), were arrested and later paraded by Police Commissioner Ahmed Illyasu with an AK-47 rifle, pieces of 0.8mm live ammunition, 26 live cartridges and two sharp cutlasses, all recovered from them.

“The world may also wish to note that three days after a stakeholders’ meeting convened by Ketu LCDA on January 25, at the instance of the police commissioner and Ketu Advancement Forum (KAF), which was attended by herdsmen, the herdsmen broke loose again into our farms, hewing down palm and teak trees for their herds to graze on.

“Surprisingly, when the residents inspected the damage done to their farms, the herders again opened fire on them and many residents sustained gunshots wounds of varying degree. This incident was well documented at the Police Area Command Office at Ilaro.

“While the residents and the police are working together on the matter, there is nowhere that we, the people at the centre of the assault, have come in contact with what the state government is doing to protect us, no matter how little.

“And Yoruba elders, in their wisdom, say you cannot shave somebody’s head without his consent and without his knowledge.

“Presently, the atmosphere is charged as areas, like Ikotun, Ologiri, Akeru, Ilukan, Ijege and Ajibode have continued to come under the influx of herds.

“Therefore, the governor can no longer continue to turn a blind eye and deaf ears to the tense situation. We insist that there is no land for open grazing in our LCDA…”

But the state government said it had taken measures to avert clashes between herdsmen and farmers.

The government also said it had put measures in place to ensure that lives and property in the state are safer.

According to the government, it has met with leaders of various interest groups, including the Fulani, the Hausa and Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, in Abeokuta.

The meeting, it was learnt, was attended by heads of security agencies, such as the Army, the Department of State Services (DSS), the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

A statement by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Taiwo Adeoluwa, said Ogun is one of the most peaceful states in the country, despite being home to diverse tribes, cultures and religions.

The government said it was not unaware of the security challenges in the land and that it was doing all within its powers to prevent a breach of the peace.

It urged interest groups in the state to always imbibe the spirit of oneness, adding that their businesses can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace.

The statement added: “Herdsmen/farmers’ clashes are everywhere. We should cooperate to prevent such here. We all have a common interest and that is, there should be continued peace in Ogun State. You should all take this message of peace to your people back home.”

Also, police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), told The Nation that the police hold regular meetings with farmers and indigenous herdsmen to ensure that peace reigns in Ogun State.

Oyeyemi said indigenous herdsmen were not giving farmers any headache.
