  • Two remanded for ‘raping’ family friend’s daughter

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, yesterday ordered that two men, who allegedly raped a 13-year-old daughter of their family friend, be remanded in prison, pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    Magistrate B.O. Osunsanmi ordered that Rasheed Kasali and Isiaka Adisa be remanded at Kirikiri Prisons.

    Osunsanmi ordered that the case file be sent to the DPP office.

    The defendants’ pleas were not taken.

    Kasali, 39, who lives at 18B, Dipo Olubi Street, Surulere, Lagos, and Adisa, 38, who resides at 11, Tosun Street, Itire-Ikate, Surulere, are facing a charge of rape .

    Prosecuting Inspector Raphael Donny said the defendants committed the offence with two others at large last year at 6, Adebayo Street, off Ijesha Road, Surulere, Lagos.

    He alleged that the defendants sexually assaulted the girl on different occasions whenever her parents were not around.

    Donny said the girl’s mother reported the case at the police station and the defendants were arrested.

     

  • Two remanded for alleged robbery

    An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court yesterday remanded in prison  two men, Gideon Eze and John Akpan, who allegedly robbed a woman of her phones and cash worth N680, 705 at gunpoint.

    Magistrate F. F. George made the order following the arraignment of Eze, 35, and Akpan, 30, by the police on a three-count charge of conspiracy, armed robbery and possession of firearms.

    She directed that the case  be consolidated with that of  Emeka Iheanacho, 20, and Onyekachi Nwojo, 27, since they are similar and the files sent to Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

    Iheanacho and Nwojo were arraigned on December 27 last year.

    The magistrate adjourned till April 16 for the DPP’s advice.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Godwin Awase urged the court to remand Eze and Akpan  and consolidate the case  with its sister case.

    He alleged that the defendants committed the offence on December 5 last year at about 10am at Muritala Odofin Plaza, Agungu, Lekki, Lagos.

    Awase said: “The defendants, while armed with a locally made revolver pistol, forcibly dispossessed Ms Nosariere Igiehon of her three Iphones worth N600, 000, a handbag containing N80, 705 and other personal effects.

    “The locally made pistol in the possession of the defendants contained five rounds of live ammunition and one expended ammunition.”

    The defendants’ plea was not taken.

     

  • Two remanded for alleged robbery in church

    In Igbosere High Court in Lagos yesterday remanded two men in prison custody following their arraignment for alleged robbery at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG),  Ijegun, Satellite Town, Lagos.

    Bright Oriakwu and Babajide Akinola, both unemployed, were accused of breaking into the church, robbing the congregation and stealing items worth N680,000 at gunpoint.

    The defendants are standing trial before Justice Adedayo Akintoye on a five-count charge of conspiracy, armed robbery, burglary and membership of an unlawful society.

    Prosecuting counsel Mr. Tunde Sunmonu alleged that the defendants committed the offences between November 27, 2015 and December 29, 2015, at 4, Ezimorah Street, off Marwa Road, Ijegun, Satellite Town.

    He said the duo and their accomplices at large conspired, broke into the RCCG and stole mixers, amplifiers and four speakers.

    The court heard that they also robbed worshippers.

    Sunmonu  said: “The defendants, while armed with a gun, robbed Mr. Chigozie Orgwu of his HP laptop worth N200,000, two phones worth N110,000, a digital external drive worth N100,000, a watch worth N70,000 and N200,000 cash.”

    According to the charge, the total value of the items stolen was N680,000.

    Sunmonu said the defendants were caught trying to join an unlawful society called ‘Eiye’.

    Oriakwu and Akinola pleaded not guilty.

    Sunmonu prayed the court to remand both in prison custody and applied for an accelerated trial.

    Justice Akintoye upheld his prayer and remanded the duo in prison.

    She adjourned till March 11 and 12 for trial.

  • Two remanded for alleged robbery

    Two men, who allegedly robbed a man of his Apple watch worth N240,000 and N60,000 cash, have been remanded in Kirikiri Prison by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Magistrate M. I. Dan-Oni sent them to Kirikiri, pending advice by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    The accused -Michael Archibong, 22, and Kelechi Uba, 30 – are being tried for conspiracy and robbery.

    Prosecutor Victor Eruada said the duo committed the offence on October 26 at Ilaoregun Street, Ijegun, Satellite Town, Lagos.

    He alleged that the accused, armed with a gun-like carved wood in form of a gun and other weapons, robbed the complainant, Mr. Samson Mohammed, of his Apple watch valued at N240,000 and N40,000 cash.

    “Mohammed was going to deliver the watch to a customer when he was attacked.”

    Two remanded for allegedly stealing policeman’s gun

    An Ilorin Magistrates’ Court in Kwara State yesterday remanded two men, Kazeem Adewoye and Olayinka Aderibigbe for allegedly stealing the service pistol of a policeman.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Bio Salihu, ordered the remand of the suspects at Okekura Prisons and adjourned the case till March 15.

    The suspects were arraigned on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, illegal possession of firearm and theft.

    The offences are contrary to sections 6, 2(3) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap. R11 Laws of Nigeria, 2004 and Section 287 of the Penal Code.

    The prosecutor, Abdukadri Jimoh, told the court that the suspects stole the pistol from the drawer of a police officer, Ahmed Aliyu, while he was praying in a mosque on February 6 at the Offa Police Division.

    He said the suspects were arrested at the back of Total filling station in Offa with the gun.

    Jimoh asked the court to remand the suspects in prison custody, pending the outcome of police investigation.

     

  • Two remanded in custody for ‘kidnapping’

    A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has remanded two kidnap suspects in prison.

    Chinaza Anaele (21) and David Amadi (26) are being held for their alleged involvement in the kidnap of Mrs. Abigail Isaiah three months ago. They are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and kidnapping.

    Mrs. Isaiah was reportedly kidnapped about 8.30pm on August 20, at Umuihe Igodo community in Etche Local Government Area.

    The two, and others on the run, allegedly carried out the crime. They allegedly imprisoned their victim and prevented her relatives from having access to her.

    According to the charge sheet, the offence contravenes Section 3 (B) (a) of the Rivers State Kidnap (prohibition) Laws No. 5 of 2015, Section 1 (1) (2) (b) of the Rivers State kidnap (prohibition) law No. 5 of 2015.

    Magistrate Amadi O. Amadi-Nna declined jurisdiction on the matter. He did not allow the suspects to take plea after the charge was read to them. He ordered that they be remanded in prison and that the case file be sent to the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

    Magistrate Amadi-Nna adjourned the matter indefinitely.

  • Two remanded for murder

    Two persons were yesterday ordered by a Magistrates’ Court to be remanded in prison custody for allegedly killing a student of the Osun State University, Rofiat Damilola Adebisi.
    Elijah Oyebode (22) and Yusuf Ajibade (25) will remain at Ilesa prison.
    Oyebode, a commercial bus driver, confessed that he hypnotised the deceased, who boarded his vehicle from Ipetu Ijesa to Osogbo.
    Oyebode said he delivered her to a herbalist, Aafa Jelili, who paid him N10,000.
    He confessed that the herbalist gave him a charm and told him to bring any young lady who has not given birth.
    It was further gathered that the second accused person, Yusuf Oyebode, allegedly received an Iphone 5 valued at N100,000 recovered from the deceased.
    Police prosecutor Mireti Wilson said the accused and others now at large committed the alleged offence on December 23 at Egbeda in Iragbiji, Osun State.
    The Magistrate, Olusola Aluko, adjourned the case till March 30.

    Two remanded for ‘strangling’ man

    An Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, yesterday remanded two men, Alexander Ayuba and Innocent John, in prison custody following accusations that they robbed a man of N7,900,000 before strangling him to death.

    Ayuba, 25 and John, 27, were brought before Mrs. A. Ajibade on temporary Charge No H/51/2016, on three counts bordering on conspiracy, robbery and murder.

    The police alleged that Ayuba and John committed the offences last April 8, at about 2pm, at 21, Oduduwa Way, while armed with a locally made pistol and cutlasses.

    Prosecuting Inspector Jimah Iseghede said the offences were contrary to and punishable under Sections 297, 295(2) (a), 221 and 231 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

    In seeking their remand, Ishegele’s application relied on Section 264(1)(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Laws (ACJL) of Lagos State, 2011.

    He said the application would enable the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP), issue an advice on the case.

    Chief Magistrate Ajibade, who hold brief for Chief Magistrate A. Ope-Agbe (Ms), granted the application and remanded the suspects for 30 days at the first instance pending advice from the DPP.

    She ordered the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and forward same to the DPP for advice and adjourned till October 17.

  • Two remanded for ‘murder’

    AN Ekiti State Magistrate’s Court yesterday remanded two friends in prison for the alleged murder of Madam Omolere Ogundipe and Mr. Deji Ogundipe.

    Olaiya Okeowo and Ogunsakin Sunday had no legal representation at yesterday’s appearance.

    Although their pleas were not taken as the court lacked jurisdiction to try murder cases, they are to remain in custody until legal advice comes from the Justice Ministry.

    The suspects and others at large allegedly killed the victims with a machete on January 1 at about 5 am at Idofin, Igbole-Ekiti in Ido-Ekiti Magisterial District.

    During interrogation by Magistrate S.I. Ojo, Okeowo confessed to the crime.

    He said: “I did it because the woman killed my mother.”

    Okeowo urged the court to free Ogunsakin because he committed the crime alone.

    He said: “I urge the police not to torture Ogunsakin again. After my arrest, they tortured me to mention other people who were not involved in the crime.

    “They have released others, except Ogunsakin. He did not commit any crime. Please, release him. I killed that woman and the boy.”

    The case was adjourned till February 20.
