Tyson Offers to Coach Rio Ferdinand in Boxing

Tyson Fury has offered to be coach for Rio Ferdinand who is getting set for his first bout later in the year.

The Manchester United legend has fixed his gaze on winning a title as a professional boxer, this Fury said is possible but suggested that the former footballer should seek expert trainer as he switch to boing.

Team GB trainer, Richie Woodhall, is already on board to help train Ferdinand while the Brit’s personal trainer, Mel Deane, will continue to work with Ferdinand.

Questions have been raised about the legitimacy of the challenge and the possible safety issues with a 38-year-old becoming a pro boxer, but Ferdinand explained it was an opportunity he could not turn down.

‘When Betfair approached me about the Defender to Contender challenge, the chance to prove myself in a new sport was a real draw,’ he said.

‘Boxing is an amazing sport for the mind and the body. I have always had a passion for it and this challenge is the perfect opportunity to show people what’s possible.

‘It’s a challenge I’m not taking lightly – clearly not everyone can become a professional boxer – but with the team of experts Betfair are putting together and the drive I have to succeed, anything is possible.’

Ferdinand must obtain a boxing licence before he can start competing in the pro game.

Meanwhile, Fury is currently without a boxing licence and cannot fight himself until his issues with the UK Anti-Doping Agency is resolved.

But the 29-year-old is hoping to return to boxing at some stage and believes he can help Ferdinand prepare for his professional debut.

He said: ‘Looking forward to seeing this from Football star to boxing star, if you need any tips on being a bad ass call me. Good luck.’

Ferdinand reached the height of the football world winning six Premier League titles and one Champions League with United.

The 38-year-old retired in 2015 and has often shown off his boxing skills on social media.

Ferdinand was using the sport as a way to stay fit and has been a regular at big fights ever since retiring from football.

  • Dont Fight Tyson Fury, Evander Holyfield Warns Anthony Joshua

Dont Fight Tyson Fury, Evander Holyfield Warns Anthony Joshua

Anthony Joshua must forget all about the idea of fighting Tyson Fury and concentrate on a much more serious contest, that is according to former boxing icon Evander Holyfield.

Joshua has been linked with an all British bout with Fury the next time he steps into the ring, with both camps talking up a potential showdown.

The two men have been trading insults ever since Joshua’s triumph over legend Wladimir Klitschko back in April, with Fury keen to settle the score.

Joshua’s victory means both men have beaten the famous Klitschko, with Fury shocking the boxing world when he toppled the Ukrainian in November 2015.

Fury has not stepped back into the boxing ring since, and has been marred with a series of controversies including failed drugs tests and poor physical condition.

Joshua is yet to officially announce his next fight, but Holyfield believes picking Fury would be a huge mistake.

‘Joshua has to think about his image. He doesn’t need to be against someone like Fury who jokes a lot and is seen in a different light,’ said Holyfield, as reported by the Sun.

Joshua has been linked with an all British bout with Fury since he defeated Wladimir Klitschko

Fury, despite having beaten Klitschko himself, divides the sport and often isn't taken seriously

‘And Fury really isn’t one of those for Joshua.’

The reigning world champion is most heavily tipped to take on Kubrat Pulev, should he fail to arrange a rematch with Klitschko.

Holyfield has also warned Joshua about keeping composed if he fights Klitschko again

But Holyfield warns Joshua that he will need to avoid having an inflated ego, should Klitschko agree to face him once again.

‘It would be a bona fide rematch, but Joshua has to avoid starting to have an ego.

‘He must avoid thinking “I don’t have to work as hard this time, I’ve proved I can beat him and I can do it again”,’ Holyfield added.

  • Anthony Joshua: I am ready for Fury clash any time!

Anthony Joshua: I am ready for Fury clash any time!

Anthony Joshua has reiterated his desire to fight Tyson Fury in a British heavyweight clash, saying it is ‘what people want’.

Joshua called out Fury in the ring after beating Wladimir Klitschko to become WBA, IBO and IBF world heavyweight champion.

He still has Fury at the top of his list of opponents, and says he is ready for the former champion whenever he is ready.

Joshua told Sky Sports News when asked who he would like to fight next: ‘In the UK, Tyson Fury. It’s big, it’s interesting, it makes a lot of sense.

‘I listen to what people want and I listen to what fighters want. Tyson is making a lot of noise, making it clear he would like to fight me.

‘I’ve been patient, after he beat Klitschko hopefully I would have been in line to fight Fury, but he had his own issues so I stayed on my own path.

‘Now I’m in a position where I can say, Tyson, when you are back and ready, it is a fight people want to see, so let’s try and make something work and live up to what people want to see.’

Joshua also said he wants to fight Fury because of the prestige it would bring to British boxing to have two world leading heavyweights from the same country fighting it out in the United Kingdom.

First however he wants a rematch with Klitschko, who he knocked down in the 11th round of a brilliant fight at Wembley in April.

He said: ‘In the first fight there wasn’t much trash talking, the press conferences were big, the preparations were big, and the fight lived up to expectations.

‘If we could do another fight like that, minus the sixth round (when Klitschko knocked Joshua to the canvas), I would love that and it would be entertaining for everybody’.

  • Who’s next after Joshua KOs Klitschko to become boxing king?

Who’s next after Joshua KOs Klitschko to become boxing king?

Who is next for the king?

Answer to that question is not far fetched. To pugilists and the Nigerian born British newest boxing king Anthony Olaseni Joshua there are two obvious fights next up for him.

He can either face Tyson Fury, who beat Klitschko all those months ago, or the American Deontay Wilder, who has 38 straight wins, 37 of which are by knockout.

After the fight Joshua was big on the possibility of fighting Fury.

” “Tyson Fury, where you at baby? Come on, is that what you want to see? I enjoy fighting. I love fighting. Tyson Fury I know he has been talking a lot and wants to come back and compete. I want to give 90,000 people another chance to come back and watch some boxing here,”  he said.

The truth is that it doesn’t matter any more.

Joshua is the biggest name in boxing and one of the biggest names in the world of sport.

Wilder and Fury would both be lucky to face Joshua and in truth they would be lucky to come out of a bout with their chins intact.

Neither have shown anything recently (Fury hasn’t fought since Klitschko 17 months ago) to suggest they could live with Joshua, who has proven himself against one of the greatest of all-time.

They’ll both present tests in their own way, Fury in particular could pose real problems if he’s in shape, but nothing like the test Joshua’s right hand presents.

If anyone is going to unify the belts, it is going to be Joshua.

    And Klitschko?

Klitschko is one of sport’s great gentlemen. The respect between himself and Joshua was clear for all to see and the fact that Klitschko was so much better on Saturday night than against Fury demonstrates how he felt he needed to be at his best.

Even at the age of 41 Klitschko showed that he too deserves a place in the pantheon of the greats and if he were to retire there would be no shame; he did himself justice in this fight.

That is for him to decide though. He will be disappointed with this result but he can be proud of the part he played in this incredible story.

History shouldn’t, and won’t, forget what Klitschko has achieved in his career, and for the grace with which he conducted himself. Joshua is his true heir out of the ring as well as inside it.

    REASONS WHY KLITSCHKO LOST

Nigerian analysts  as published today in one of the national dailies(online medium) there are four major reasons whythe 41 years old but with more experiences Klitschko, lost the bout to Joshua

    1. Age

At 41, Klitschko though still very much the athlete was visibly tired by the end of the ninth round. Anthony Joshua, who is 14 years younger, wouldn’t have lasted the distance against the rampaging Ukrainian when he was in his 30s.

    2. That sixth round goof

The much-experienced Klitschko entered the ring with an incredible stat, 53 KOs in 68 fights and 64 victories. The sixth round should have been the end. Early in the round, the powerful Ukranian hit Joshua with a massive right hand, spilling his mouthpiece.

The UK Guardian exclaimed: “Joshua in serious trouble! Oh dear. Joshua looks exhausted. He’s taking shots that he sees coming. Too tired to move out of the line of fire. No legs, breathing through his mouth heavily. Now he digs deep at the end of the round but it’s surely too little too late.”

Klitschko had the moment to finish off Joshua, he didn’t and the rest is history.

    3. Fight rustiness

Klitschko’s last fight was against Tyson Fury on 28 November 2015, losing his WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, The Ring, and lineal heavyweight titles. After two botched rematches between the two, Fury was forced to vacate the WBA (Unified), WBO, IBO heavyweight titles.

After 18 months of inactivity, the 41-year-old stepped into the ring against a younger man who last fought in December 2016.

    4. Joshua wanted it more

The scary thing is that he’s only just getting started; in many ways this was Joshua’s coming of age fight.
