    U20 AFCON: Flying Eagles draw Senegal  in stern quarter final tie 

    Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will combat the Junior Teranga Lions of Senegal in the quarter final of the ongoing Egypt 2025 U20 AFCON following the completion of Group C ties yesterday.

    Senegal, the holders of the competition defeated DR Congo to confirm their date with Nigeria after finishing second in Group C with four points from three games.

    The West African side started their title defence slowly playing a 1-1 draw against Central African Republic and they were pinned 1-0 by Ghana in the second game before the three points got yesterday against DR Congo gave them a quarter final ticket.

    They will be up against an unbeaten Nigerian side who ended the group stage with a 2-2 draw against the Rising Stars of Kenya. It was the first time they conceded goals at the ongoing competition.

    They had earlier beaten Tunisia 1-0 and played a goalless draw against Morocco before the draw with Kenya. They ended second in Group B behind Morocco who finished the group stage with seven points from three games while the Flying Eagles came second with five points.

    The game comes up on Monday by 1pm Nigerian time with the winner qualifying for the FIFA U20 World Cup in Indonesia.

    In other fixture, Morocco will slug it out with Sierra Leone.

    The group stage of the competition ends today with Tanzania up against Egypt while South Africa will trade tackles with. Zambia in a Southern African war.

    Meanwhile, coach  Zubairu  is upbeat as the Flying Eagles  set  their sights on  Monday’s quarter final tie with the determination to win it to seal a World Cup ticket at the ongoing U20 AFCON in Egypt.

    “I believe the quarter-final is the most important match of the competition,” he said after the match against Kenya. We need to work on the players mind-set and ensure they are fully focused on the task ahead.

     “Our goal is to reach the World Cup, and to do that, we must win this match. Preparation starts now, he added.

    The four semi-finalists of the AFCON U20 tournament will secure a spot to represent Africa at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile.

    U20 AFCON: Flying Eagles set for Moroccan firepower

    The Flying Eagles will come up against the firepower of the Junior Atlas Lions of Morocco after the North Africans fought from a goal down to beat Kenya 3-2 in their Group B game of the 2025 U20 AFCON.

    The Flying Eagles have expressed confidence of flying high at the U20 AFCON in Egypt after they opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over Tunisia.

    On Thursday, Akwa United youngster Auwal Ibrahim ‘Germany’ was Man of the Match, gave Nigeria the maximum points against the Junior Cartage Eagles, who gave as much as they got from their Nigerian counterparts.

    Captain Daniel Bameyi said after the win that they are now looking forward to another win against Morocco on Sunday night.

    “It is on to the next game. We hope to win and go top of our group on our way to qualifying for the World Cup and winning the tournament,” the Bayelsa United central defender said.

    Flying Eagles coach Aliyu Zubairu said the win over Tunisia is great for team’s confidence.

    “The first game of a competition is often difficult and to get the three points was very important,” he said.

    “This will help with our confidence. Nigerians should continue to support and pray for the team and we promise not to let them down.”

    The Flying Eagles are seeking a record-extending eighth U20 AFCON title in Egypt.

    Morocco fell behind to the Rising Stars of Kenya in the second match in Group B, before they rallied back to win despite missing a penalty and losing two players to injury

    Othmane Maamma was Man of the Match for Morocco to go top of the standings by virtue of having scored more goals than the Flying Eagles.

    U20 AFCON: Nicholas tips Flying Eagles against Tunisia

    Former Flying Eagles midfielder, Jonathan Nicholas, has urged the Flying Eagles to begin their campaign  at  the 2025 CAF U20  Africa Cup of Nations  in Egypt  on a strong note.

    Nigeria  will begin  her campaign at the  biennial tournament  today, May 1,  with  their  opening Group B match against  Tunisia at the 30 June Stadium, Cairo while  Kenya  will face Morocco in the other Group B’s  encounter.

    The  tournament began on Saturday  with matches in Group A  where  Egypt  beat  South Africa 1-0  while Zambia and Sierra Leone  drew goalless.

    Against this backdrop, Nicholas  who is currently  attached with Abia Warriors  in the Nigeria Premier  Football  League,  has emphasized the importance of a good start in a tournament of this magnitude , saying,  the Flying Eagles must  ensure victory in their opener  against the Junior Carthage Eagles.

     “I hope we start on a very good note because looking at the team, it’s very important to do so,” the 21-year-old Nicholas told Brila Fm.

    He also highlighted the impact a win could have on the team’s confidence, adding: “If we win against Tunisia, it will boost our morale.”

    After  today’s opener against  Tunisia, the coach Aliyu Zubairu-led Flying Eagles  will face Morocco  on May 4  and Kenya on May 7  to round off their preliminary Group B matches.

    The best two teams  will qualify automatically  for the knockout phase.
