    Uche happy with Eagles’ bonding

After making a scoring comeback to  the Super Eagles and helping them beat the Red Devils of Congo in Pointe Noire on Saturday, Super Eagles striker Ikechukwu Uche has told SL10.ng that he is bonding well with his teammates.

The Villareal of Spain forward converted from the spot, and gave Nigeria the lead against the Congolese. And despite playing for the first time for Nigeria in almost two years and also playing with some of the players for the first time, Uche says they are bonding well as a team.

“We are here to work together and we are all professionals and we have tried to adapt to one another,” he said in a hurried tone.

The 30-year old started the game in a three-pronged attack with Emmanuel Emenike and Ahmed Musa and scored Nigeria’s first goal, converting from the spot in the 59th minute after Emenike was brought down, before Guangzhou R&F of China forward, Aaron Samuel scored a beautiful curler at the death to secure not just all three points, but the needed two goal advantage.

The African champions will host South Africa’s Bafana Bafana on Wednesday at the Uyo Stadium. Nigeria must beat the South Africans – who have already progressed to Equatorial Guinea 2015 – before they will also qualify to defend the title they won last year in South Africa.

    Uche promises goals

Villarreal striker  Ikechukwu Uche is keen to make a goal scoring return to the Nigeria squad after he was recalled for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Congo and South Africa.

The 30-year-old last played for the Super Eagles at the 2013 AFCON in South Africa but he was handed a recall for the crucial qualifying matches this month by head coach, Stephen Keshi.

Uche, who has netted 18 times in senior internationals with Nigeria, is eager to hit the ground running.

“I had a conversation with Ikechukwu Uche on Tuesday evening and he told me he can’t wait to join the team. He’s very excited by the prospect of playing for the Super Eagles again,” spokesman of the national team, Ben Alaiya told supersport.com on Wednesday.

The media chief added that Uche is looking forward to adding to his 18 international goals by scoring in the upcoming game against Congo and South Africa.

“Uche said nothing beats scoring for Nigeria and that he will want to do it again in the matches the Eagles will be playing this month. He wants to make the fans, his teammates and indeed all Nigerians happy with a great display in the games. He knows Nigerians expect a lot from him.”

Uche made his Nigeria debut in 2007 and has gone on to amass 44 senior caps since then.

The attacker has been in decent form for his Spanish club, Villarreal this term and has netted three goals in all competition for the Yellow Submarine.

    Uche congratulates Super Falcons

Super Eagles striker Ikechukwu Uche has congratulated Nigeria’s Super Falcons after they won the 2014 CAF Africa Women Championship courtesy of a 2-0 defeat of the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in the final.

Goals from tournament top scorer Desire Oparanozie and Most Valuable Player Asisat Oshoala secured a seventh title for the Nigerians. And Uche, who represents Nigeria’s senior men’s football team, has wasted no time in congratulating his compatriots on yet another AWC win.

“Congratulations to the super Falcons of Nigeria for making us proud. #respect #Godisincharge #moretrophies #SuperFalcons #Naija,” he tweeted.

The new African champions are expected back in Nigeria on Monday and are expected to tour Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos with the trophy – an open bus parade – before leaving for Abuja on Tuesday for an expected reception by Nigeria’s President, Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday.

The victory in Namibia now means Nigeria are African champions in both men and women’s football, as the Super Eagles are the reigning African champions having won the last edition of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa in 2013, but are presently struggling to qualify for the 2015 edition.

EAGLES’ INVITATION LATEST: Keshi denies Uche’s exclusion

    • Blasts media for false report
    • Team’s camp bubbles in Khartoum

Super Eagles Coach,  Stephen Okechukwu Keshi was livid with rage when he read reports credited to him that he has shut the Super Eagles door permanently against Villareal of Spain striker, Ikechukwu Uche.

Clarifying what he said at Wednesday’s media parley in Abuja, Keshi said for the umpteenth time what he said was that he will not beg Uche to play for Nigeria, especially when there are other players who are willing and ready to play for the Super Eagles. “I don’t know where they got that portion of their reports from, but I never said Uche won’t play as long as I remain coach of the team. In the near future if he changes his mind and indicates interest to play he will be considered on merit.”

He urged the media not to sensationalise the Ike Uche issue as it will not help resolve anything. “We have to help all our players grow so that we can all build a strong national team and the media is a partner in this regard. He said he does not have anything personal against the Villareal striker but will not force to play for Nigeria against his will.

The Super Eagles arrived Khartoum, the Sudanese capital early on Friday  at about 6am local time (4am in Nigeria) aboard Sudan Airways for the crucial Nations Cup qualifier game against the Sudanese national team. Reception from the Sudan Immigration was smooth while a handful of Nigerians were outside cheering the team. After airport formalities, the team was driven to nearby Grand Holiday Inn, where it will stay for two nights.

NFF Vice President, Seyi Akinwunmi led the team to Sudan, with NFF Director, Technical , Emmanuel Ikpeme and other secretariat staff in tow.

Also visible on the entourage was the President General of the Nigeria and Other Sports Supporters Club, Rauf Ladipo. He came as usual with his team to cheer the Eagles to victory and he started doing that right from the airport.

Today’s match is scheduled for 8pm local time and 6pm Nigeria time and the Eagles had a feel of the Khartoum Stadium on Friday evening.

    For Olatunji Dare

Without doubt, former President Obasanjo and his political son, the incumbent President Dr. Jonathan have foibles of which no quarantine could purify them. That apart, there is so much that is bad about the best of both men and so much that is good about the worst of them that it does not behove one of them to criticise the other. May God give Nigeria leaders with good morals soonest. From Adegoke O. O., Ikhin, Edo State

Dare, Obasanjo’s letter should not be used to divert the truth. I think what Obasanjo is calling for is the abrogation of the land use decree which gave him half of Ogun State lands on a platter of gold. If he calls for adjudication on corruption let us start from there and corruption will leave Nigerian shores. Thanks! Anonymous

Dare, one gets peeved to read about an elder politician ‘railroading’ his ‘boys’ to presidency as claimed in “December 2013: A month in missives” with Obasanjo on Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Jonathan. What does such an act make of Nigerians and the electoral process than a pack of fools electorally supervised by corrupt and inept bodies? And yet the media knew Nigerians’ votes were in Obasanjo’s personal choice, competent or otherwise, but chose to lump into the ‘fools’ pack instead of protesting against such electoral malady. And what has the scrutiny of passports at the airport got to do with OBJ’s claim that Jonathan has a watch list? That is too cheap a proof. Jonathan’s response to Obasanjo’s letter was cautious and deserves commendation and not condemnation. Sanusi Lamido’s issue is most nauseating; considering his egoistic demeanour. And Iyabo Obasanjo’s case remains blurred from truth. From Lai Ashadele

Some of the issues you raised in your write-up “The centennial of greed” are the issues that would have been discussed immediately after the civil war but the elders lacked the foresight. From Ogo, Delta State

I just finished reading your essay titled “The centennial of greed”. You said it pointblank. Thank you. Anonymous

Segun, really interesting, your “The centinnial of greed (1)”. The only problem is that you seem to have left a truly critical question. What do you think caused the civil war? Until the rest of the Nigerians wake up to this aboriginal conspiracy by Lugard and his northern cohorts to dispossess the south, and address the issue with candor and fortitude, l am afraid we may spend another centennial running around in circles. From Marizu Ogbuehi

Great write-up on “The centennial of greed”. Britain destroyed us from the start and religion is helping to sustain that destruction. From Archibong, Calabar

Re: The centennial of greed. Greed did not come to Nigeria with the arrival of Lord Lugard, it was an attempt to civilize us and give us a near modern governance. In the process, southern protectorate proved to be civilized and got less. North cooperated and got big. We tasted governance and began the struggle to share the headship of number one. Our not valuing the centennial celebration lies in the same number one. Remove corruption today and Nigeria will appreciate centennial celebration. In that respect, I bow to late Gani Fawehinmi and Papa Jakande. The present crops are ‘jeunjeun’. From Lanre Oseni

Your article will be of great importance if all Nigerians will have access to it. But the problem I see is that, hatred has been planted in the heart of every individual right from birth by our forfathers, even among different groups, ethnics, religions, e.t.c. From Bamaiyi T. Kaduna

    For Tunji Adegboyega

Re: ‘Missing link on Okoh’s homily’. Your comment shows how narrow you can be in your write-ups. Why do you comment on areas that you lack knowledge? You don’t know anything about salvation. Prosperity was a blessing to Adam. He lost it to Satan. It was reclaimed in salvation. Tunji, you will win our minds when you write on matters that bring peace, that encourage it; certainly not on things that take peace away and put this country on fire. There is room for improvement. Anonymous.

The Most Revd. Nicholas Okoh should be criticised for the unbalanced ‘sermon’. It is a confirmation that we are in an age of blandness, of superficiality, of submerged vigour and of atomized thought. Today, many worshippers’ relationship to public morality has diminished to a vanishing point. May God touch the hearts of our leaders for a positive change in due course. Anonymous.

Thanks, Tunji, some of our religious leaders have turned their churches to political platforms for the President. Anonymous.

My understanding of your Sunday write-up is that peace without justice is peace of the graveyard. In some churches, the front pews are reserved for the rich and powerful. They don’t speak truth to the front pews. So, Okoh’s incomplete sermon is not surprising to me. More grease to your elbows for your Solomonic writings on Sundays. Anonymous.

Your article on January, 5 was super, articulate and direct to the issue at stake. You made my day with your write-ups a la carte. You went beyond religious bigotry. From Comrade Rufus Olusesan, Lagos.

Thanks for telling it as it is to the Rt Revd. Okoh, the head of the Anglican Church in Nigeria, “Missing link in Okoh’s homily”. I won’t forget his extremely provocative, myopic, undemocratic call for the proscription of ASUU during the varsity teachers’ strike … From Gab A. Uche, Umuahia.

Tunji, well-done. You have said it all. Anonymous.

Dear Tunji, to preach only what pleases our leaders is a sign that our emancipation remains a mirage. Without fear or favour, I want all the churches to stand by the truth, just as the Catholic Church stood boldly against evils like gay or same sex marriage, abortion, paedophile and inordinate lifestyles of some men of God amid the prevailing hunger, abject poverty and penury in the land. Our religious leaders have the capacity to help reverse the nation’s seemingly gloomy future at the pulpits. From Collins Obodo, Kubwa, Abuja.

I feel you; most of our men of God shy from telling our leaders their wrongdoings in government because of what they will get from the politicians. The funniest thing with them is that they see politicians who rigged elections and engage in other vices and would grant them space for thanksgiving in their churches. What a country! From Gordon Chika Nnorom, Umukabia, Abia State.

  • Ike Uche injured

    Ike Uche injured

Super Eagles forward Ikechukwu Uche missed Villarreal’s pre-season opener against a Spanish Segunda division side Gimnàstic de Tarragona on Sunday 21 July 2013.

The Yellow Submarines started their pre-season on a winning note with a 2-1 victory over Gimnàstic de Tarragona at the Nou Estadi but were without last season’s top scorer Ike Uche.

A statement on the club’s official website confirmed that Uche’s exclusion in Sunday’s 2-1 victory was as a result of an undisclosed injury he sustained in training.

“Juan Carlos, Kalu Uche and Jaume Costa didn’t play the match due to different injuries.

“Mexican players Giovani dos Santos and Javier Aquino are currently training under a specific training programme after joining the team this last Thursday”, the statement read on villarrealcf.es

Two strikes from each halves from Villarreal’s Jonathan Pereira and Juanto in the 43rd and 63rd minutes cancelled out Aleix Coch’s 31st minute opener.

Villarreal was overall better than the locals especially during the second half.

  • AFCON final: Moses, Uche start

    AFCON final: Moses, Uche start

Victor Moses will start for Nigeria versus Burkina Faso in the African Nations Cup final, but injured Emmanuel Emenike is out for Ikechukwu Uche.

MTNFootball.com has again specially gathered that Chelsea winger Moses has overcome a left ankle injury he picked up against Mali in Wednesday’s semi-final in Durban and so will be in action from the start.

However, the same cannot be said of four-goal striker Emmanuel Emenike as he suffered a more serious hamstring injury, which officials informed MTNFootball.com will sideline the Spartak Moscow striker for at least two weeks.

The 25-year-old Emenike has not trained since the injury leading up to Sunday’s final.

His place will now be taken by Uche, who was top scorer in the qualifying tournament with three goals.

The Villarreal striker lost his first-team place to Emenike during the tournament, but he returned for the crucial group game against Ethiopia with very little effect.

He will now lead the attack along with the lively Ukraine-based striker Brown Ideye.

Interestingly, Lazio youngster Ogenyi Onazi will also keep his place in the first XI ahead of Norway-based Fegor Ogude, who has not featured for the team since he returned from a one-match suspension for the Cote d’Ivoire clash.

Eagles starting XI vs Burkina Faso

Vincent Enyeama – Elderson Echiejile, Efe Ambrose, Godfrey Oboabona, Kenneth Omeruo – Ogenyi Onazi, Mikel Obi, Sunday Mba – Victor Moses, Ikechukwu Uche, Brown Ideye.

    … Yobo out again

Super Eagles officials have again left out injury-hit skipper Joseph Yobo, while Emmanuel Emenike and Ike Uche lead the attack against Ethiopia.

MTNFootball.com gathered that Yobo has not fully recovered from an ankle injury, which he picked up in the match against Burkina Faso, and so he will miss his second straight match of the Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday.

The vastly experienced Fenerbache defender returned to full training this week, but officials said he is not yet 100 percent fit for the crucial encounter.

Stephen Keshi will therefore stick with the central defence pairing of Godfrey Oboabona and youngster Kenneth Omeruo.

Celtic defender Efe Ambrose will regain his place at right back after he served out one-match ban for receiving a red card against Burkina Faso.

Lazio youngster Ogenyi Onazi was the makeshift right back against Zambia on Friday.

In midfield, Enugu Rangers new signing Sunday Mba will make his AFCON debut ahead of Real Betis ace Nosa Igiebor, who has struggled to impress in South Africa.

The Eagles will parade a fast and daring strike force of Emmanuel Emenike, Ikechukwu Uche and Victor Moses.

MTNFootball.com reported on Monday that Villarreal striker Uche will make his first start at this tournament on Tuesday.

It means CSKA Moscow’s Ahmed Musa will start from the bench in this clash.

  • UCHE KALU RULES SELF OUT

    UCHE KALU RULES SELF OUT

RIZESPOR forward, Uche Kalu has ruled himself out of the Nigerian squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, supersport.com can report.

Kalu has struggled to recuperate from a groin injury and has opted to leave Nigeria’s pre-Afcon camp in Faro, Portugal this weekend.

The former Enyimba forward could not train with the rest of the squad in the week owing to the injury and had been placed under close supervision by the Nigerian team doctor.

He also missed out of Wednesday’s friendly against Catalonia.

On Friday, Nigeria head coach, Stephen Keshi had requested from the medical team to know the health status of the player before next week’s deadline to submit his final squad of 23 players to Caf for the AFCON in South Africa.

However, the player’s lawyer, Chike Onyeacho, has shed more light on Kalu’s decision to rule out himself from the Super Eagles’ trip to South Africa.

“Unfortunately Uche (Kalu) will take no further part in the Nations Cup preparations and competition proper because of a groin. He has opted to return to the country so that he doesn’t aggravate the injury any further.

“The injury was the reason he missed the last two games of his club (Rizespor) in Turkey. Uche would have hidden the injury and probably make the Nations Cup squad but he is aware of the implications as he is still young and knows that the 2014 World Cup qualifiers and other matches are still there to play for Nigeria.

“We are expecting him in Nigeria this weekend before he goes to his base in Turkey to treat himself properly,” said Kalu’s lawyer.
