Onazi wants to make impact in UCL

Nigeria midfielder Eddy Ogenyi Onazi is looking to make ‘some serious impact’ in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League, he has told News24.

The 22-year old was on the scoresheet on the last day of last season, as he helped SS Lazio return to the world’s biggest club competition, and ahead of the new season, he says he has already set his sights on featuring in the competition.

“I’m really excited about the prospect to be honest, I’m really looking forward to making some serious impact when it begins.

“It’s going to be another long season and I pray to stay injury free because I really want to play as much as possible.

“I want to be there for my team when they need me and I pray we will have another successful season.”

The Nigerian international has played in the Europa League with Lazio in previous seasons, but says the forthcoming season might be his biggest.

“I think it could be my biggest season because we’re going to have the Champions League, the Serie A, and the Copa Italia.

“It’s going to be a big season and it might be my biggest. I just have to work hard in training and keep proving myself to the manager and hopefully everything will go well,” Onazi added.

Heineken celebrates UCL final in style

It was a befitting conclusion to a hugely successful UEFA Champions League season, with simultaneous viewing parties across two continents.

As Juventus and Barcelona FC traded tackles in the final match in Berlin, Heineken House Lagos treated fans and special guests to a night of exquisite football, refreshments and live entertainment anchored by top artiste, Wande Coal.

At the same time, 20 Nigerian lucky trip winners were on an exotic Spanish island, enjoying the third annual edition of the ultimate football party experience: the Heineken Ibiza Final.

The scintillating UCL final match saw Barcelona lift the world’s most coveted club football trophy for the fourth time in nine years, and marked another remarkable chapter in Heineken’s ninth consecutive year of sponsoring the tournament.

At Heineken House Lagos, fans followed the game excitedly on multiple television screens while also interacting live, on Heineken’s #ChampionTheMatchTwitter feed, with Real Madrid legend, Roberto Carlos.

The multiple UCL winners arrived in style by boat at Heineken Bay, the magnificent beachfront venue of the Heineken Ibiza Final event. The cove was elegantly decorated, and guests watched the match under open skies, on a giant LED screen anchored in the lake, with a dreamy Spanish sunset as the perfect backdrop. Pre- and post-match entertainment included colourful aerial stunt performers suspended several metres in the sky, while their earthbound counterparts performed eye-popping dance moves on the ground below.

Both in Lagos and Ibiza, the final whistle was heralded with spectacular firework displays and partying into the night. But for the Ibiza guests, the entertainment was simply a taste of things to come. The following morning, they boarded six large catamarans and headed deep into the Spanish coastal waters. On each boat was a designated DJ playing a mix of soothing rhythms and uplifting dance music, as well as two masseurs, aptly named Ibiza Angels, that gave each guest a relaxing massage. For a couple of hours, the boats sailed different routes across the waters, while the guests relaxed and enjoyed refreshments on board. But a huge surprise was in store when the six vessels moored together mid-waters, and surrounded a floating stack of four 20-foot Heineken branded shipping containers.

The upper set of containers suddenly exploded open in a blast of lights and smoke, revealing a DJ set and enormous loudspeakers that started pumping waves of dance music across the previously tranquil Ibiza bay. And so began an all-day party that featured New York-based house music legend, Barbara Tucker, and continued into the night, back on shore at the top notch Blue Marlin club.

On Monday, as other Heineken guests boarded flights back to their various bases around the world, the Nigerian contingent of lucky winners stayed on in Ibiza to enjoy a further day of sightseeing, shopping and fine dining. When they eventually returned home the following day, they had all experienced first-hand the legendary Heineken quality, and understood why it is the world’s most international premium lager beer.

Lagos hosts global Heineken UCL interactive session

In recognition of Nigeria as one of the top global hotspots of football followership, Heineken’s worldwide interactive series berthed in Lagos last week. Heineken House Lagos was selected as one of only nine exotic locations around the world to host the #ChampionTheMatch series, where a football legend interacts with a global audience in a live Twitter session.

On a night when the cream of European clubs vied for UEFA Champions League semi-final places, it was most befitting that Heineken House guests enjoyed the company of Chelsea and Real Madrid legend, GeremiNjitap, who had himself made 37 appearances in the world’s greatest club football tournament, and twice lifted the trophy. “Frankly, I am excited”, he enthused.“Being here, with Nigerian football fans brings me lots of emotion. I realize now that I’ve been in a great profession.”

With world class décor, premium entertainment and rousing atmosphere, Heineken House Lagos is firmly established as the most desirable place to enjoy UCL match nights. Like other celebrities and football legends that had experienced it before him, Geremi was suitably impressed. “I’m very surprised. When I got here, I wasn’t expecting to see all this,” he expressed.

The former Real Madrid star championed the match with Nigerian ace comedian AY who also used his social media channels to boost the conversation on the match night.

Ace comedian, Senator, provided the half-time entertainment as Barcelona took on and beat Paris St Germain. But in Geremi’s opinion, the trophy will ultimately be heading elsewhere. “There are very big clubs left in the tournament at this stage… the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich. But I’m a big fan of Real Madrid, and I’m tipping them to lift the trophy.” Indeed, Geremi is much more than a just fan of Real Madrid. As a right winger, Geremi scored a Champions League quarter-final goal for them against Bayern Munich back in April 2002.

For the guests, Geremi’s presence heightened the whole experience. “Tonight, we have a former Chelsea legend, Geremi, in the house. You don’t get to see world class legends everyday, this is fantastic,” said January Ozeraga, a banker. “Kudos to Heineken. I’ve never seen any other company put in so much resource into creating such a fantastic viewing experience for us the consumers. I have lots of pictures, and souvenirs of this experience.”

    Other guests shared his sentiments.

Tony Nwigwe said, “This place is so cool! The ambience, the environment makes you feel settled and relaxed. The hustle and bustle of Lagos is so much, and you don’t want to go a place where you’ll be sweating or robbed. You come in here to watch the match, and see a lot of beautiful people, both men and women. And of course, a bottle of Heineken to cool down the stress, whether your club is winning or losing.”

As it turned out, Paris St Germain lost to Barcelona on the night. But the clearest winners were Heineken and their ever-growing band of luxuriously pampered consumers.

UCL: Barcelona to play Bayern Munich in semi final

    Real meets Juventus

Barcelona has been drawn against Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-finals.

The other last-four tie sees Juventus – playing in its first semi-final since 2003 – facing Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid, the defending champions, the BBC reports.

The first legs will be played on 5 and 6 May, with the return matches a week later.

In the Europa League, holders Sevilla face Fiorentina, while Rafael Benitez’s Napoli will square up against Ukraine’s Dnipro.

Bayern boss Guardiola won 13 trophies as a manager – including the Champions League in 2009 and 2011 – during four years at Barcelona.

He has reached the Champions League semi-finals in each of his six seasons as a manager, four with Barca and now two with Bayern.

Ancelotti will also be reunited with one of his former clubs, with the Italian having managed the Turin side from 1999 to 2001.

The draw leaves open the possibility of a Barcelona v Real Madrid European Cup final, something which has never happened before. The arch-rivals are also battling it out for the Spanish league title this season.

Real Madrid reached the last four by defeating city rivals Atletico – in a repeat of last season’s final – thanks to Javier Hernandez’s late goal.

Bayern Munich thrashed Porto 6-1 at home to overturn a first-leg deficit and progress 7-4 on aggregate.

Things were more straightforward for Barcelona, who beat Paris St-Germain 5-1 overall, and Juventus, who beat Monaco 1-0 over two legs.

This season’s final will be played at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium on 6 June.

Bayern Munich plays Shakhtar Donetsk, Juventus faces Borussia Dortmund and Basel tackles Porto.

Manchester City narrowly qualified, needing a final-day win over Roma to progress, but finishing second to Bayern Munich in the group phase has seen the English champions come up against four-time European kings Barcelona.

In last season’s first knockout game, the Catalans defeated Manchester City 4-1 on aggregate.

Chelsea, who finished ahead of Schalke as group winners, will play Paris St-Germain for the second consecutive year, having beaten the French champions in dramatic circumstances in last year’s quarter-finals.

There is added interest in that game as Chelsea sold defender David Luiz to PSG for a reported £40m in the summer.

    OBASI EXCITED OVER UCL STRIKE

Super Eagles striker Chinedu Obasi is excited to have scored the equalizer for Schalke in the 34th minute, bringing the scoreline to 1 – 1 after an assist by Germany international Dennis Aogo in the third round of matches in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Schalke 04 defeated Sporting Lisbon 4 – 3 at the Gelsenkirchen.

Three players with Nigerian background tasted action for the German representative – Chinedu Obasi, Dennis Aogo and Sidney Sam.

Five minutes after the restart, the goalscorer turned provider when he set up Klaas Jan Huntelaar, before Höwedes gave the home team a two – goal cushion on the hour mark.

The strike by Obasi was his first – ever goal in a European competition since he made his debut appearance on February 16, 2012 against Viktoria Plzeå.

    • As Legia Warsaw lose appeal

Efe Ambrose’s Celtic will remain in the Champions League after Legia Warsaw lost their appeal to have their ban overturned on Thursday.

The Polish side had hoped UEFA’s appeals body would reinstate them after they were demoted to the Europa League for fielding an ineligible player during the second leg of their Champions League qualifying game against the Scottish champions.

But Legia co-owner Dariusz Mioduski has confirmed that the club will now take their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, tweeting: ‘Unfortunately for now football is not winning… We are going to CAS.’

Legia president Boguslaw Lesnodorski echoed Mioduski’s pledge to take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

He wrote on Twitter: ‘Negative decision, it’s hard even to comment, we are using the CAS (we plan to tomorrow) and otherwise we are focused only on the games.’

Legia believed Bartosz Bereszynski suspension had been served after he missed both legs of the previous qualifier against St Patrick’s Athletic as well as the first leg against Celtic, but their failure to register him for the game against St Patrick’s proved costly.

Mioduski released a statement through the club’s official website which stressed Legia’s determination to keep fighting for Champions League reinstatement.

Villa: UCL final will be special

Atletico Madrid striker David Villa is looking forward to tonight’s UEFA Champions League final against city rivals Real Madrid, believing it will be “something really special”.

The two Spanish giants lock horns in Lisbon with very different European pedigree – Real Madrid are aiming for their coveted 10th European Cup, while Atletico are aiming for their first-ever Champions League trophy.

“We are confident in our chances but we know that it will be a very difficult final,” Spain’s all-time top goal-scorer revealed in a Facebook interview with fans. “Both teams know each other very well.”

Villa highlighted the magnitude of the game for the two teams taking part in the final.

“This is the most important game at club level and that signifies enormous responsibility. There will be a very special atmosphere in Lisbon and it will be a privilege to be able to live through it,” he said.

Villa, who has already won the competition with Barcelona three years ago, recalls the “unforgettable” night when he scored in the final at Wembley, and is anticipating an equally special evening in Lisbon.

“A UEFA Champions League final is something really special. I will always hold with me an unforgettable memory from 2011 while getting to the final with Atlético has enormous merit because we have worked so hard to achieve it,” said the 32-year-old.

Villa believes his Atletico side are fully deserving of their spot in the final, which he feels is the result of hard work put in by the entire squad throughout the season.

“It was the reward of a brilliant season for Atlético and the hard work put in by all of the team. We have been taught to be a fully committed team in which every member does their part for the good of the group. A group that has made it this far with a lot of hard work, commitment and humility,” said the striker.

The La Liga champions have been boosted with the news that star players Diego Costa and Arda Turan may be fit for Saturday’s final, having joined the team at training on Thursday.

The Final between the two Madrid heavyweights is scheduled for today at 8.45pm.
