Maltese League: Udoh shatters Hamrun’s winning streak over Mosta FC

Nigeria youth international goalkeeper, Akpan Udoh, yesterday matched his words with action as he performed creditably to help Mosta FC to secure an impressive 1-1 away draw to Premier League leaders, Hamrun Scorpions.

Going into yesterday’s tie held at the Centenary Stadium in ??, the statistics were skewed against Mosta after they had lost five recent matches prior to Udoh’s arrival on the last day of last summer’s transfer window.

The 24-year-old Udoh who has made commanding presence between the sticks for Mosta FC in recent matches, hinted on Friday that the game against Hamrun could be dicey, adding he would need to put up his best elements.

Udoh indeed reportedly but up a brave performance with some crucial saves that helped hi side shared the points against the defending league champions and current leader of the exciting Maltese Premier League.

Yesterday, Hamrun took the lead in the 38th minute through Uros Duranovic in the 38th but Mosta fought back gamely and were rewarded with a vital equaliser in the dying minutes of the first half courtesy of Kelvin Tulimeiri .

Thereafter it was a ding-dong affairs with Udoh reportedly putting up some eye-catching performances to earn Mosta FC a point that pushed them to the fifth spot on the table after seven round of matches.

“ When I looked at the previous encounters and results against Hamrun, I felt really uncomfortable that Mosta have lost all the past five matches though I knew with our qualities, we should at least get a point or even beat them,” Udoh told NationSports. “But with our collective efforts today, we were able to break that cycle of defeats.”

Udoh, with recent good performances against Birkirkara and Marsaxlokk , was named in the high profile Malta Football Players Association (MFPA) Best X1 Stars of the, an award that is being conducted in conjunction with Times of Malta (TOM).

Following  his outstanding  recent performances  for Mosta FC  in the Maltese  Premier League, Nigeria  youth international goalkeeper , Akpan  Udoh, has hinted about his readiness  for  tomorrow’s big test against  champions and current leaders, Hamrun.

Mosta   who are in  sixth position, will be away   to  Hamrun  at the idyllic The Centenary Stadium and Udoh reckoned  he has to  put up  a   good performance in order to justify his growing profile in  the exciting   Maltese domestic league.

Udoh, a FIFA U-17 World Cup winner with the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria  in 2015,  recently  put up a spirited display in  his side’s win against Birkirkara with another superb showing   against Marsaxlokk  in a five-goal thriller that saw Mosta  record their second consecutive victories in weeks.

He was deservedly named  in the high profile Malta Football Players Association (MFPA) Best X1 Stars of the, an award that is being conducted  in conjunction with Times of Malta (TOM).

Yet  Udoh who had previously had stints with clubs in Israel, said  he has been preparing well for this weekend’s  tough game against  Hamrun, adding  his agility would  come to the test against  the league leaders.

“ We are facing a big test against Hamrun  on Sunday  and since this is a big game, I’ve been training personally  twice  because our opponents  are the defending champions  of the Premier league here in Malta,” he said.“ So, I consider this a bigger test for me, but I’ll be out to do my best.”

Goalkeeper Udoh gets rave reviews with Maltese Mosta

Former junior international goalkeeper Akpan Udoh is certainly enjoying the form of his life with Maltese Premier League side Mosta FC as he recently helped his side to their second consecutive victory against Marsaxlokk in a five-goal thriller.

The 24-year-old who helped Nigeria to win the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2015, has been a regular fixture with Mosta FC since his arrival in the summer at the Charles Abela Memorial Stadium.

His impressive performance last time out even earned him a place between the sticks in the all-star Malta Football Players Association (MFPA) Best X1 in conjunction with Times of Malta (TOM) for Matchday 5 but he surmised he would continue to do his best in order to maintain his status on the weekly award which reportedly is very popular with players in the Maltese top tier league.

The MFPA Best XI reportedly acknowledges the outstanding performers from the last BOV Premier League matchday together with the coach of the week as a pool of qualified coaches are engaged by the MFPA to watch every BOV Premier League match and identify candidates for the MFPA Best XI by rating the performances of all the players while the ones with the highest ratings are shortlisted for the MFPA Best XI before the final selection is drawn up.

“Akpan is really coming up strongly with Mosta FC in Malta and I’m really happy for him ,” one of his former trainers said.“ He just have to keep working hard to reach the top, he has the potential to be one of Nigeria’s bet keepers.”

Mosta FC completed the signing of Akpan just before the summer transfer window in Malta shut down in the summer.

His signing according to TOM, ‘was a huge coup for Mosta FC who are bringing to the club a player who helped his country win the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2015.

It would be recalled Akpan was a star performer for the Golden Eaglets at the U17 World Cup in Chile where he made seven appearances and managed four clean sheets during the tournament as Nigeria won a historic fifth title.

  • Udoh: Why Emmanuel deserves second term

Akwa Ibom Commissioner for Information Charles Udoh spoke with EMMANUEL OLADESU in Lagos on the second term ambition of his boss, Governor Udom Emmanuel, and factors that will shape the election.

What are issues that will shape the governorship election in Akwa Ibom State?

It is the character and quality of individuals on parade, and also their tract records. If you put that into consideration, you will realise that the incumbent governor is ahead of his nearest competitor. In terms of character, professionalism and personality, in terms of integrity, the incumbent is miles ahead. The last three years in Akwa Ibom have shown that this is the most transparent administration we ever had. The administration goes out to put things on the table in black and white for people to see. Akwa Ibom is probably the only state in Nigeria that publishes its annual account. That underscores the importance the government of the day attaches to financial prudence, book keeping and creativity in financial management. This government is miles ahead. This government is not looking at the next election. This government is looking at sustainable development in Akwa Ibom State. All the things this government is doing is geared towards medium and long term development of Akwa Ibom State, and how it can have an economy that is self-sustaining, and for a more prosperous sstate. We are not building roads for the sake of elections. We are building roads that will stand the test of time, from design to construction. Every road we construct today should have a minimum of 25 years life span before any resurfacing or reconstruction on such road. If you look at education, health and infrastructural development under this administration, they are dotting the landscape of the state.

Today, we have top 10 health facilities, equipped. We have over 15 industries that are currently functioning and production fully on top. That underscores the determination of the government to achieve its dreams of industrialization and tourism. Beyond the rhetoric, one significant thing this government has done is to bring down the price of staple food in Akwa Ibom State. In 2015, when this government came on board, for N200, you bought a cup of garri. But now, with N200, you buy between eight and 10 cups of garri, depending on the locality. We have the Green House Initiative along the Aiport Road, to produce first rate vegetable that is comparable with anywhere in the world. They will produce for exports.

We are witnessing the most peaceful era in the state. The last eight years before the administration were eight years of hiccups. We now have a peaceful environment where people’s lives are not being taken for granted. All the societal vices are being kicked out so that we can have a peaceful community, so that we can attract foreign investors to set up industries in Akwa Ibom State. We are succeeding.

In terms of education, we are one of the few states in Nigeria where basic education is free and compulsory. We pay WAEC fees for students. That costs us a whopping N600 million annually. If you aggregate all these things, you will know that this government is on the track.

The principal opposition in this state is a gentlemen who sits on the budget equivalent of nine states. In addition to that, he draws two percent from the gross earnings of international oil companies. He has nothing to show for the humongous budget. He cannot build roads. The electric transformer in his village was installed by Akwa Ibom State government, not by his commission. That paints a gruesome picture. The headship of the commission is rotated among the oil producing states. Today, it is the turn of Akwa Ibom State. What have we done with it? The agency is antagonizing the Akwa Ibom State government. Akwa Ibom is the largest producer of oil. But, we have zero presence of the commission. No viable project has been implemented. It is sad. This is a major intervention agency. Calabar-Etuk Road is in a mess. It is a major economic road. If the intervention agency is to do what it should do, while the Federal Government is still grappling with contract awards, the intervention agency should have made the road motorable. We get a commission that is politicised.

I am concerned that our democracy is being threatened. The actions and inactions of the police leave much to be desired, especially in my state where the police have clearly taken sided. The police sided with five dissident members who were sacked from the House of Assembly, against the court order. That is not what we should expect in our democracy. What we want is a democracy where both sides can sit down, dine and wine together, go to the poll and the loser will congratulate the winner. We have not got that.

What are your fears for the 2019 elections, particularly the governorship election in Akwa Ibom State?

I wouldn’t say fear, because it will mean painting a picture of apprehension. But, there are concerns. The opposition is not ready for the election. They are not campaigning. They are not doing ward tours. They are trying to act a script, cause enough trouble, disrupt the process to an extent that the Federal Government will want to create an emergency. They want to roll in the federal might and take control of the state. Be that as it may, the will of the people will always prevail. The people of Akwa Ibom State cannot be intimidated. They will not sit down and fold their hands and allow anybody to bring federal might to take power. The opposition is not out to play politics in the best interest of the people. They only think about their pocket. Why did those guys defect? Financial issues. I just painted the picture of the person in the NDDC with the budget of nine states and there is nothing to show for it. It is worrisome. They have created scenario of discontentment, violence, civil unrest and they are pushing the agenda that the election in Akwa Ibom State should not hold the same day like other states so thsat they can deploy the federal might when it is held later.

What’s the justification for the governor’s second term?

Look at his score card. I don’t think any first term governor has recorded the achievements that Governor Udom Emmanuel have recorded in the last three and half years, in the face of dwindling national economy. That is what stands him in good stead during the election. The former governor that defected what his political leader. He expected a bandwagon effect. That bandwagon effect didn’t happen because people have seen the genuineness and sincerity of purpose, and the honesty of Governor Udom Emmanuel. Some of the people standing by Governor Udom Emmanuel today were the people mentored by the former governor. The chips are down. They said it is better to stand on the side of the truth.

The wife of the president said your governor will soon be on his way to the APC…

That is a pipe dreaming. It is wishful thinking. I can tell you emphatically that Mr. Udom Emmanuel is a man of honour and integrity. He will never eat his words in that regard. He stands for something. Before he stood for governor, he was well endowed; a director in Zenith Bank. He was controlling the finances of the bank. He has always shown integrity and strength of character. He is in government today. He is not thinking about the next election. He is thinking about the future of the state; that when he leaves, he should have legacies. The former governor has joined the APC because of the EFCC. He now wants to strangulate the state.  Of course, there will be hiccups here and there. But, our state will never go in thst direction.

You painted a picture of great achievements by the governor. But, the opposition does not see that way…

The opposition will not see any good thing in the government. The opposition, naturally, want to run down the government. Just a few days ago, we commissioned the rice factory; the rice processing mill. The opposition said there is no rice mill. The reason the opposition is doing that is that, in the past, they would claim they were commissioning projects and there was no project. So, they are thinking that this government is doing what they used to do. This government is a government that stands for truth and integrity. If we say there is a project somewhere, it is there. If we say we have a coconut refinery, we can take anybody there at any time. We will commission and empty building and call it a hotel. We will never do that. This government has integrity. Look at what happened recently when the wife of the president visited. The opposition started peddling lies. But, the video is there. They are always trying to manipulate the minds of the people. Unfortunately, Nigerians are more exposed than before. They have the gadgets. You can’t blindfold people.

How can peace return to the House of Assembly?

It is for the five miscreants to obey the rule of law. You can’t go to court and lose and start fomenting troubles. The law says you can go to a higher court. You follow the judicial process. Let the court decide. They went to court on their own. Nobody took them to court. It is only rational to go back to court. It is unreasonable for five people to want to sack an Assembly of 26 members. It is the height of rascality that people can do that in this day and age. They illegally entered into the House of Assembly, supported by the police. Hoodlums wearing fake uniforms were protected by the police. They were handed over to the police. The police without investigation, without prosecution released the hoodlums. Our democracy is taken a battering. The people who are to be neutral are taken sides. It paints a very bad picture for our democracy.

What is the level of confidence you have in INEC, in terms of conducting a free and fair election?

We only hope and pray. If the elections are not manipulated, there is no way the opposition can stand a chance. They are not campaigning. My party is having door-to-door, local government-to-local government and ward-to-ward campaigns. Structures across all wards, chapters, local governments. Now, that is grassroots. I just finished an outreach in my ward and local government. We are on the right tract. Let the INEC be a neutral umpire. They should not be like the police. They should be an unbiased umpire. The will of the people will always prevail. I do not see how people will vote and the vote will not count. We will police the votes. We will not be afraid. We will defend our votes.

How can we avert violence during the election?

Our prayer is that the Federal Government should ensure that security agencies and agencies of the government involved in elections are neutral umpires. The Federal Government should ensure that people who perpetuate acts of violence and rascality are brought to book. That is our concern. In Akwa Ibom State, a police station was burnt down. No person has been arrested, as a fall out of the primary of the opposition in the state. The INEC office was burgled and over 2,000 PVCs were stolen. Not one person has been apprehended. Not one person has been called to give an explanation. Yet, over a billboard issue, the IGP summoned a commissioner of the state performing his lawful duty and a local government chairman over a billboard issue.

Udoh: Why I removed my shirt to celebrate winning goal

Enyimba skipper, Mfon Udoh has disclosed to  SportingLife that his decision to remove his shirt after scoring the match-winner in yesterday’s NPFL match day 17 tie against Enugu Rangers in Calabar was what he promised to do if he scored and was happy it happened.

The People’s Elephant came back from a goal down scored by former player of the side, Daniel Etor for the Flying Antelopes before Stephen Chukwude and Udoh turned the tie around for the home team in the 55th and 88th minutes.

Udoh in a chat with SportingLife stated that he already challenged himself ahead of the match to exert himself and get at least a goal for Enyimba and that if he managed to score, he would remove his shirt in celebration- an act he had not done before in his professional career.

The all time highest goals scorer in the NPFL expressed his happiness at scoring the all important goal that sealed the tie at the U J Esuene Stadium and that they were relieved to get the maximum points against the reigning league champions.

Udoh has scored his eighth goal of the season and Enyimba are sixth on the log with 25 points from 17 games.

There was no overture or meeting of any sort as two-time African champions, Enyimba, nudged the armband, not in a forceful way though, to one of their best performers in recent seasons, Mfon Udoh, with just about one month to the start of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season for 2017.
Udoh told supersport.com that he knows what is expected of wearing the armband of a successful club such as Enyimba and is braced for the responsibility.
He explained that the responsibility of captaincy handed to him comes as a surprise and at the same time “means a lot” to him.
“(This new captaincy responsibility) comes as a surprise sort of, as I wasn’t expecting it. But honestly it means a lot because it comes with so much work and responsibilities,” Udoh told supersport.com.
“There is no pressure for me (concerning the captaincy). It is just a new challenge which I know I will surely handle well by God’s special grace.”

Enyimba players gutted by Fed Cup ouster, says Udoh

Mfon Udoh has stated that Enyimba are disappointed by their inability to qualify for the 2016 Federation Cup final which has ended their hope of playing in the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup.

The team bowed 1-0 to Nasarawa United at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan and the forward said the People’s Elephants experienced some setback in their preparations for the encounter

“We had little issues going into the match but we had overcome it before we travelled to Ibadan,” Udoh told Goal.

“We went there with the conviction that we would beat Nasarawa United and still have a chance to play in the CAF Confederation Cup next year with the final of the Federation Cup still to be played.

“We need to forget about the loss and brace up for next season to correct the mistakes noticed this term. It has been a disappointing season for us all and we must share the blame together.”

  • Udom prudent with Akwa Ibom resources, says Udoh

Udom prudent with Akwa Ibom resources, says Udoh

Mr. Ekerete Udoh is the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Akwa Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel. In this interview with  Kazeem Ibrahym, he speaks on the efforts being made by the governor to diversify the economic base of the state away from oil and what the people should expect from the administration in terms of infrastructural development.

You had an interesting career in journalism. Can you tell us about it?

I have been in journalism for about 31 years.  I pioneered a genre in Nigerian Journalism in 1985 called Romance and Society. I became possibly one of the youngest columnists in any national newspaper. That was the Sunday Times which as at that time was the highest selling weekly in Nigeria under the editorship of Chike Okafor. I started writing a column called ‘Stories that touched the heart’. A year later I was invited to join Concord and that column ran in Concord for almost 10 years. Sometimes in 1989 I got invited by a very good friend of mine who today is the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachukwu. He asked me to come join him to set up a magazine called Hints. The Hints magazine was by far in the 90s the most successful, popular and profitable magazine in this country.

Dr. Ibe Kachukwu was the publisher and I was the editor. I have written columns in practically in every national newspaper in this country. I don’t think there is anyone that I have not contributed or written columns. Until about a year and half ago, I was a columnist with This Day. I wrote that column for five years. It is called Diaspora Perspectives which was like a bridge across the Atlantic.

In late 1996 I left for United States. I decided to pursue other things. Of course, I updated my skills because in life you have to constantly update your skills. Even if you had a bachelor somewhere else you still needed to update your skills. Journalism, being what it is, I have never left the media.

I set up a newspaper in New York which was called the Diaspora Style and it became, without sounding immodest, the most powerful newspaper that dealt with issues concerning the African Diaspora community. We ended up being media partner to the Obama campaign because in United States there is what we called the ethnic media. In the USA, I think there are about conservatively 10 to 15 million Africans who went to USA, became citizens and they are all part of the United States.  My magazine was targeted at that particular audience and there is no political party whether Democratic or Republican that will not reach out to any solid constituent because 15 million people can swing an election.

What party did you have affiliation with in the U.S.?

I am a registered Democrat and my sympathies are for the Democratic Party. In spite of the fact that I lived in the United States, I was not disconnected from Nigeria. I was always coming to Nigeria. At a point in time, people didn’t know whether I was living in America or not. I was always here and I bought into the vision of former Governor Godswill Akpabio. I did a lot of media relations for that government, particularly from the Diaspora angle. I was the media consultant for four years.

At what point did you finally return home?

When the financial services expert Mr. Udom Emmanuel was appointed the Secretary to State Government and the speculation started making the rounds that he was likely going to be the next governor of Akwa Ibom State,  I said to myself the time had come for me to come back home fully and finally to be a part of what I believed was going to be a mass movement of people with ideas, people that are going to think outside the box. The governor and I are from the same part of the world. We are from the same community and I felt it is a thing of joy that an astute manager of resources was going to be the governor of Akwa Ibom.

So, I came back late 2013 and when the then SSG Mr. Udom Emmanuel put himself in the ring, I joined the campaign as a Director of Media and Publicity. We crisscrossed the entire 31 Local Government Areas of the state. Thank God the good people of Akwa Ibom saw certain qualities that would move this state forward in him and they entrusted their fate in Mr. Udom Emmanuel. At the end of the successful election, the governor was kind enough to believe that I could add a little bit of value and invited me to his media team as the Senior Special Assistant on Media/Chief Press Secretary to the Governor. So far, it has been a wonderful ride.

Do you think Governor Udom Emmanuel is fulfilling some of his campaign promises to Akwa Ibom people?

Absolutely so; the governor came in with a five-point agenda. The major part which was based on industrialisation, the governor has done that part with enthusing zeal. Shortly after he was sworn in, Governor Udom Emmanuel set up technical committee on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) headed by Mr. Gabriel Ukpe as the Chairman and others. They have signed numerous Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs). The governor is of the opinion that you have to diversify. Why we are where we are today is because our leaders in the past refused to diversify because of the monies from oil. The governor is of the opinion that you cannot run an economy that is based on one product.

The governor has done a lot in agriculture. If you look at what is going on in the country, even payment of salaries of workers is a huge problem to some state governments. Governor Udom Emmanuel has done so well in the sense that Akwa Ibom is one state in the country where salaries of workers are not being owed by the government. He has achieved that by deploying his skills as a financial services expert. He has also maintained some of what the immediate past governor started like the free and compulsory education. Kids under one to five years are still given free medical care. The aged and pregnant women are also given free medical attention.

There is a new turn in governance.  He has done over 250 km of roads in the state. A lot of places that were affected by flood water, the governor has addressed that and made it motorable. The governor is also embarking on a lot of capital projects. The governor deserved to be commended and applauded.

How would the governor eradicate poverty in the short run since those industries are for long term period?

I am sure you have been following the governor’s activities. The small scale loans the governor is giving to farmers and market women. That is still ongoing. That is a vital area that can immediately impact the lives of the people. Akwa Ibom is one of the few states that have given small scale loans to people across the board.

Pensioners of Local Government recently protested over unpaid gratuities while the state government claimed it does not owe the pensioners. Why?

The governor came out to address the world that he does not owe any worker. It is just the machination of certain elements that still do not want to believe that the 2015 election is a settled affair and some of those elements still believe that the more they agitate for certain things that would never be may be the more they would draw some mileage out of it. The state government has nothing to do with payment of salaries and pension of local government workers.

Are you now saying the protest was politically motivated?

Absolutely so, I will not mention the name of any political party but the protest is orchestrated by certain elements.

We also heard that the governor has banned protest across the state, how true is that?

Another lie from the pit of hell. Another manufactured subterfuge. The governor wouldn’t say that. We are living in a democratic environment where you have the freedom and right to agitate for certain needs. What the governor said was if you are being used by certain element to cause public disaffection and that it is illegal assemblage, then you have broken the law. You know we cannot live in a chaotic society where anybody can wake up in the morning and begin to block the road.

For you to protest there must be police permit. That was not done. It was just a rented crowd of certain elements and the governor as the chief security officer of the state said he won’t allow people to cause public disaffection. So, the governor didn’t say that he is banning protest but illegal protest is what the governor is against. I don’t think there is any government in the world that will fold its arms and watch people cause public disaffection.
