  • Pochettino signs new 5-year contract with Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino signed a new five-year contract on Thursday that will keep him at the English Premier League club until 2023.

Pochettino, who joined Spurs in 2014, led the club to a third-place finish in the league this past season.

It ensured they would play in the UEFA Champions League for a third campaign in a row.

The Argentine’s success at Tottenham has made him one of the most coveted managers in world football.

Under the 46-year-old manager’s leadership, Spurs have evolved into a high-pressing team that plays an energetic and attractive brand of football.

He is yet to win a trophy with Spurs, who will move into their new 63,000-seater stadium next season after spending the last campaign playing their home games at Wembley Stadium.

“I am delighted that we have agreed a new, extended contract with Mauricio,” Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said in a statement on the club’s website.

“We have been on an extraordinary journey and the times ahead look even more exciting as the club enters the next phase in its history.

“Mauricio has fostered an incredible spirit in the team and has embraced a style of play our fans have loved watching. I know they will welcome this commitment by Mauricio.”

Pochettino said his decision to sign an extension at Spurs had followed extensive talks with Levy over the direction the club would take in future.

The chairman operates a strict wage structure at Tottenham with the club’s salary budget and transfer spending dwarfed by their top-six rivals.

“I am honoured to have signed a new long-term contract as we approach one of the most significant periods in the club’s history and be the manager that will lead this team into our new world-class stadium,” Pochettino said.

“Daniel and I have spoken at length about our aspirations for this football club. We both share the same philosophies to achieve long-term, sustainable success.

“This is a special club —- we always strive to be creative in the way we work both on and off the pitch and will continue to stick to our principles in order to achieve the success this club deserves.”

  • Gareth Bale’s son in Champions League mood

Does the name Axel Charles Bale (ACB) ring a bell?  May be yes, maybe not!Well, he is the son of Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale who was delivered this morning.

The new arrival has not only arrived early enough ahead of the UEFA Champions League that will see Real Madrid take on Liverpool in the final in Kiev, but is already a Champions league mood with all dressed for the occasion.

Gareth Bale announced the birth of his newborn son Axel Charles earlier today.

The 28-year-old, who has two daughters – Alba Violet, five, and Nava Valentina, two – with long-term partner Emma Rhys-Jones, became a father for the third time on Tuesday morning.

The Wales international took to Twitter to announce the exciting news with a heartwarming post.

He wrote: ‘We are delighted to welcome a baby boy into our family this morning. Axel Charles Bale 08.05.18.’

Bale uploaded a picture of his son with the post and looked like he had dressed him in an adorable Champions League-themed babygro as it was white with stars – similar to the logo.

The former Tottenham star will be hoping with the support of his new baby son, to secure his third Champions League gong in succession with Real Madrid later this month against Liverpool.

Bale has been used sparingly in this season’s Champions League with boss Zinedine Zidane preferring to use Isco and Marco Asensio.

But the Welsh forward has given himself a good opportunity to claim a starting berth in Kiev after reminding everyone of his ability to deliver spectacular goals on big occasions at the weekend.

Bale starred in a fiery El Clasico by scoring a late equaliser from just outside the box to earn Madrid a point after Cristiano Ronaldo had hobbled off at half-time with an injured ankle.

The Portuguese star is due to have a scan on it this week but Zidane confirmed after the match it would not threaten his place in the final.

  • Liverpool stun Manchester City with 3-0 win at Anfield

Liverpool ripped apart Manchester City with three goals inside the opening 31 minutes as they won their UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg tie 3-0 on Wednesday.

Anfield has witnessed many memorable European nights over the years and this will take its place among the most spectacular.

A simply devastating first-half display was crowned with goals from Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane.

The tie may not be over, with 90 minutes remaining at the Etihad on Tuesday.

But Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp, who has enjoyed more wins over Manchester City counterpart Pep Guardiola than any other manager, will be delighted as his commitment to attacking football was amply rewarded.

Liverpool are the only team to have beaten Manchester City in the English Premier League this season.

That was with a thrilling 4-3 victory in January, and they repeated the formula of that success by attacking City’s defence from the outset.

Roared on by a particularly vocal home crowd, Liverpool put the English Premier League’s champions-elect under intense pressure from the first kick and it took just 12 minutes for them to crack.

After a Manchester City corner-kick, James Milner launched the ball forward, Salah broke from the halfway line and played the ball inside to Roberto Firmino.

His shot was blocked by Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson but Firmino pounced on the loose ball and slipped it to Salah, who fired home.

City responded with a swift counter-attack of their own but Leroy Sane, who had broken from deep, screwed the ball wide when he could have played in team mate Kevin De Bruyne.

Liverpool were rampant though and harrying Manchester City off the ball in midfield when Milner won back possession and moved it straight to Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The former Arsenal midfielder unleashed an unstoppable drive from 25 metres to make it 2-0 in the 20th minute.

Manchester City were now reeling and looked nothing like the team that has marched so convincingly to a 16-point lead in the English Premier League.

Then, it was not long before Juergen Klopp’s side made it 3-0.

Salah floated a teasing cross from the right towards Mane, who rose above the Manchester City defence to power a header past Ederson and send the Anfield crowd into delirium.

Manchester  City came out brightly after the break though, finally managing to find some composure with their passing.

Liverpool were unable to get back into their first-half rhythm and they suffered a blow when Salah went off injured in the 52nd minute.

Guardiola’s side were back in their familiar role of controlling possession, but were struggling to create chances with Sane wasting a promising opening at the back post.

It was one of a series of frustrations for the German left winger.

It was also a miserable night for Sane, who was superbly handled by young Liverpool right back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The night was completed when Sane was ruled offside as he broke down the left and crossed for Gabriel Jesus to put the ball in the net.

Yet the fact that Manchester City’s late pressure was accompanied by audible tension from the Liverpool fans was a reminder that the tie is not over.

Few teams could overturn a 3-0 deficit against Liverpool but Guardiola’s side is certainly one of them.

  • Valentine: Football enthusiasts ditch spouses to watch UCL matches

Valentine: Football enthusiasts ditch spouses to watch UCL matches

Some football enthusiasts in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) found it difficult to keep their dates for Valentine due to their passion for UEFA Champions League matches fixed on the same day.

The football enthusiasts either cancelled the appointments they earlier fixed or postponed such appointments to enable them to have undivided attention to the matches.

The Champions League featured important matches among prominent clubs, with matches between Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain (PSG), Liverpool and FC Porto, which were played on the same day.

The matches began at 8:45 p.m, at about the same hour when most of the Valentine parties and dinners were fixed.

Viewing centres across the city were filled to capacity, with the usual enthusiasm that accompanied football matches.

Embittered women, who spoke to our reporter, said that they felt bad losing their lovers momentarily to the fixed matches, adding that their men’s show of preference was not funny to them at all.

Some of the affected ladies said the match fixtures were hitherto unknown to them because they did not have the same passion for football like their men.

They expressed surprise when their spouses called to reschedule dates, citing the match fixtures as their reason.

Miss Joy Chukwuka, a student, whose spouse informed her about the match at the last minute, told our reporter that she cancelled the entire date instead of postponing it as he had suggested.

“We fixed the time together and he agreed, we had already earmarked places to visit and no time did he mention that he had a match to watch.

“Even if the match is important, he should have thought of the fact that Valentine isn’t done every day. He should have respected my company and watch the replay.

“I was so angry yesterday (Valentine’s Day) and it dashed all the high hopes I had. I got home to see that my roommate also suffered the same ridicule,” Chukwuka said.

However, some of the football enthusiasts said that the stakes for the matches were too high for them to ignore, especially those who had gone into betting as gamblers.

They argued that the women were supposed to understand the importance of the matches, saying that even if they had kept the dates, their attention would have been divided.

But, other men who kept their dates revealed that they had to spend more than half of the time checking live scores online, as some of them have had some bets on certain clubs.

Mr Julius Tyem, an engineer, said he could not miss the match for anything, even Valentine.

He said he killed two birds that night by watching the match and going on his date after, although the match ended at about 10 p.m.

“My girl-friend understood, we just had to find an outing that suited the time schedule; these teams are big teams and no football fan wants to be told what happened.

“There is a big difference between watching a live match and watching a replay. It is not the same at all.

“Some people had even placed bets and they needed to guide that ‘investment’ first before anything. Football is emotional too, just like Valentine,” Tyem added.

Mr Osahon Osarobo, an ICT entrepreneur, did not watch the match; he explained that his partner did not agree to a rescheduling. However, he followed the game online.

“My date was not smooth and I was trying to avoid that but she did not give me the chance. I kept on checking my phone for the most part and it disrupted the whole flow.

“I am a strong football fan, just like most other men. Taking us away from game is like taking away air,” Osarobo said.

The night did not end too well as most men who had placed their bets and lost the stakes went home angry, instead of going on their dates.

Miss Susan Asuquo, a banker, said her partner did not even honour the rescheduling which got her frustrated although she later got his reason.

“I heard his team PSG lost to Real Madrid, he placed bets that morning and even bragged that he would get me a befitting gift with the money for Valentine.

“I am sure he felt really disappointed and bitter. That was why he behaved like that,” Asuquo added.

EPL preview: Arsenal new boys face early derby baptism of fire

New Arsenal signings Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan will get an early taste of the north London derby atmosphere when they face Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Saturday.

The pair enjoyed comfortable home debuts in last weekend’s 5-1 rout of Everton.

But their local rivals are sure to provide tougher opposition as the two teams continue their bids for UEFA Champions League qualification.

Spurs are fifth in the table, four points ahead of sixth-placed Arsenal, one behind fourth-placed Chelsea and two adrift of third-placed Liverpool with 12 games left.

Arsenal outplayed Tottenham in a 2-0 victory in the reverse fixture.

But Spurs have reasons to be confident, having beaten second-placed Manchester United and drawn 2-2 at Liverpool in their last two games.

Liverpool travel to St Mary’s on Sunday to face a Southampton side who ended a 12-match winless run in the league.

The Saints climbed two points clear of the relegation zone with a 3-2 victory over West Bromwich Albion in their last match.

Chelsea, meanwhile, will welcome bottom club West Brom to Stamford Bridge on Monday on the back of losing 3-0 at home to Bournemouth and 4-1 away to Watford.

  • Juventus to release Alves from contract

Juventus to release Alves from contract

Italian giants Juventus confirmed on Thursday they would release right-back Dani Alves from the final year of his contract.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is known to be interested in the 34-year-old, whom he knows from their time together at FC Barcelona.

Juventus chief executive Beppe Marotta said Alves had “expressed a desire to try a new experience’’.

Marotta said Juventus hoped to reach a “mutual termination’’ with Alves.

He wished the Brazilian good luck for the future.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Alves has only been with Juve for a year, winning Serie A and reaching the UEFA Champions League final.

Prior to that, he had spent eight seasons at FC Barcelona.

The first four of those were under Guardiola, a period when the pair shared in two Champions League triumphs and won La Liga on three occasions.

Manchester City do not have an experienced right-back after releasing out-of-contract duo Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna.

Guardiola has been linked with Tottenham’s Kyle Walker as well as Alves, who he bought for FC Barcelona from Sevilla for £23m in 2008.

1,000 injured during Turin stampede, Italian police say

About 1,000 people were injured after a firecracker provoked a stampede on Saturday night in the Italian city of Turin, police say.

Thousands of football fans were watching a live relay of Juventus’ UEFA Champions League final match against Real Madrid in Cardiff, Wales when a bang was heard.

Rumours of an explosion quickly spread to worsen the situation and provoke a stampede.

At least two people, including a seven-year-old child, were seriously hurt in the incident.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that title-holders Real Madrid of Spain beat Juventus of Italy 4-1 to win the Champions League for the 12th time.

With 10 minutes of the second half remaining, crowds rushed away from the centre of Piazza San Carlo, crushing people against barriers.

Bags and shoes were left scattered on the ground as people ran screaming out of the square.

A seven-year-old boy is reported to be in critical condition in hospital with head and chest injuries.

Some of the injuries occurred when a barrier around the entrance to an underground car park gave way.

For some Juventus fans, the incident brought back traumatic memories of the 1985 Heysel stadium disaster in Brussels, where 39 people were killed, with most of them being Italian fans.

A wall had collapsed on them before the European Cup final match against Liverpool.

  • Record-breaking Real Madrid beat Juventus, retain Champions League title

Record-breaking Real Madrid beat Juventus, retain Champions League title

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as holders Real Madrid of Spain on Saturday emerged champions of Europe for a record 12th time after overwhelming 10-man Juventus of Italy.

In a high-quality UEFA Champions League final match in Cardiff, the Portugal captain put Real Madrid ahead with a first-time finish from 16 yards before Mario Mandzukic equalised.

He scored from just inside the area with a sensational overhead kick beyond Keylor Navas, a goal that should stand out as one of the best.

But Real took control of the game after the interval, with Brazilian midfielder Casemiro’s deflected shot restoring the lead.

Ronaldo then sealed victory for Zinedine Zidane’s side after poking home from close range following Luka Modric’s cross.

Juventus played the last six minutes with 10 men, after substitute Juan Cuadrado got booked twice inside 18 minutes, before substitute Marco Asensio hit the fourth after Marcelo’s fine pass.

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has now won back-to-back Champions League titles since he took charge in January 2016.

In addition to this, the former Real player won the season’s La Liga title.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Juventus, who are the Serie A champions, have now lost five Champions League finals since they last won the competition in 1996.
