Anambra 2025: APC candidate Ukachukwu votes, alleges ‘widespread’ vote buying

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in Anambra, Mr Nicholas Ukachukwu, has alleged widespread vote buying at the ongoing governorship election in the state.

Ukachukwu made the allegation in an interview shortly after casting his vote at Polling Unit 012, Umudimala Amaihe Hall, Osumenyi in Nnewi South Local Government Area of the state.

The APC candidate specifically accused the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) of vote buying across all polling units.

“From what I have been hearing, there has been reports of hitches and security challenges but largely, there have been vote buying.

“That has become the biggest menace that will witch hunt this country to a standstill. It will come to a point where leaders, who have the opportunity to be in power, will not be able to do anything,” he said.

Ukachukwu said that from one or two places that his people had visited, there were many things going on, including vote buying.

“It is a collective treasury that has been looted and given back to people to get back their mandate. It is a bad thing that everybody should condemn.

“So far, there has been no report of death or any major incidence of mishap,” he added.

The APC governorship candidate called for collective condemnation of what he called a bad practice, urging security agencies to live up to their responsibility of curb electoral fraud.

He also claimed that one of his party agents was beaten up in Utuh in Nnewi South Local Government Area.

Ukachukwu, however, said that exercising his civic right was a proof that he was qualified to vote and be voted for.

In spite of the vote buying allegations, he expressed the confidence that his party would win the election.

“I believe God that winning is still possible because the day is still young,” he stated.

Ukachukwu commended INEC for the early arrival of materials and officials, which he said had improved the electoral process in the state.

Ukachukwu vows to usher in agro revolution, establish industrial parks

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, has promised to end what he described as the “era of empty rhetoric” if elected governor in the November 8 election.

Ukachukwu made the pledge during campaign rallies in Omo and Anaku communities in Ayamelum Local Government Area, where he unveiled his development agenda for Anambra North.

He vowed to transform the zone through improved infrastructure, quality education, stable power supply, and massive job creation. According to him, his administration would usher in “glorious moments” for the people of Anambra.

Speaking with reporters after the rally, the Director General of the Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu–Iyom Campaign Council, Dozie Ikedife (Jnr), said the APC candidate was committed to bringing tangible development to the state and restoring public confidence in governance.

Ikedife said Ukachukwu’s blueprint includes agricultural revitalisation through an agro-value chain revolution and the establishment of an industrial park to create thousands of jobs for youth.

He added that security and infrastructural development would be top priorities for the APC candidate, who plans to protect farmlands from herdsmen attacks and create an enabling environment for businesses and investments to thrive.

Community leaders and stakeholders at the rally, including Chief Ikechukwu Maduka Nebuife, John Anigbogu Icheke, and Eziagulu Offodile, a former SDP chairman who led his supporters to the APC during the event, expressed confidence in Ukachukwu’s leadership capacity.

They urged Ayamelum residents and the wider Anambra electorate to support the APC candidate, describing him as a man of integrity with a genuine commitment to development.

“We are no longer comfortable with APGA’s deceit. Our roads are impassable, our youths are unemployed, and our communities have been neglected. Prince Ukachukwu is a man of his word, and this is the time to deliver him to the Government House,” the stakeholders declared.

  • Anambra 2025: Why Ukachukwu, Ekwunife could disrupt APGA’s hold on power

Anambra 2025: Why Ukachukwu, Ekwunife could disrupt APGA’s hold on power

As Anambrarians prepare for a season of electioneering there is every reason that the political landscape in Anambra State is set for a potentially seismic shift as Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu and Senator Uche Ekwunife throw the gauntlet at the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)  deploying their combined political credentials, strategic positioning, and timing suggest they could mount the most credible challenge to APGA’s dominance in recent years.

Senator Uche Ekwunife brings to this partnership a wealth of legislative experience that few politicians in Anambra can match. Having served in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, where she performed impeccably well and understands the intricacies of governance at the federal level and the experience gives her unique insight into how federal resources can be channeled to benefit the state – something that could prove crucial in an era where federal allocation and intervention programs are increasingly important for state development.

Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, on the other hand represents a threshold of new ideas with deep roots in Anambra’s grassroots . His background as a businessman provides him with a connect to the business community which is a very large constituency in the state. His business acumen offers a different perspective on economic development one that is welfarist in nature, similar to the policies of the likes of M.I Okpara.

Both leaders bring significant credentials to the table. Senator Ekwunife’s legislative background and Prince Ukachukwu’s entrepreneurial experience provide them with practical knowledge of what it takes to create jobs and drive economic growth. In a state where unemployment and underemployment remain significant challenges, their combined business networks could attract investment and create opportunities that government alone cannot provide.

Together, they present a balanced ticket that combines experience with innovation, tradition with modernity.

One of the most compelling aspects of this political partnership is how it transcends traditional party boundaries. If these two leaders can successfully unite different political factions and parties behind a common vision, they would create a formidable coalition that APGA would find difficult to counter. This kind of broad-based alliance has historically proven effective in Nigerian politics, where personal relationships and cross-party cooperation often matter more than strict party loyalty.

The ability to bring together diverse political interests suggests strong negotiation skills and political maturity – qualities that voters often look for in leaders who promise to unite rather than divide. This contrasts sharply with the sometimes insular nature of single-party governance that has characterized APGA’s rule.

Their understanding of both local and national economic dynamics positions them well to develop policies that can compete with APGA’s dismal record.

In contrast, despite  APGA’s newfound desire for a relationship with federal authorities, the state’s ability to maximize federal benefits has been below par. A leadership team with proven federal connections could unlock resources and opportunities that have been difficult to access under the current arrangement.

After years in power, APGA faces the natural challenges that come with incumbency. Voter fatigue, accumulated grievances, and the desire for change are common factors that opposition candidates can exploit. The state’s exploitative nature where traders and petty businesses have been repeatedly taxed to stupor and where operatives of the state such as his anti touting squad aka Ndi Aka Odo( People with pestles) have become beasts bearing brutality to the common folk, harassing and extorting hapless innocent citizens.

Governor Soludo seems to have lost his footing as governor, his projects since inception seem to be more cosmetic than development driven. For example, the funds used for the completion of the Government House Anambra now renamed “Light House” would have been enough to gift Anambra 3 power plants, can we imagine the possibilities of a power plant per senatorial district? Can we imagine the solution to our power conundrum and the leapfrogging of our society from a commercial to an industrial giant, competing with states like Lagos and Rivers, positioning Anambra to becoming perhaps the first 20 economies in Africa?

So when the state government begins to celebrate such and other sugar candy land like projects like Anambra Solution Fun City in a state like Anambra in which a 30 percent of its youth population are unemployed and another 30 percent are underemployed, one wonders if this was the same man the state voted for In the 2021 elections.

Even its narrative on security following the emergence of its security outfit, Udo Ga Achi appears shaky as the state has continued to be at the receiving end of criminals with the government looking more helpless whilst prominent citizens have reportedly abandoned the state whilst the ordinary citizen has resorted to self sustaining techniques to protect themselves and their loved ones.

The candidature of Prince Ukachukwu and Senator Ekwunife are well-positioned to present themselves as agents of renewal who will address the shortcomings of the current administration while building on its limited successes.

Their combined profile allows them to appeal to different segments of the electorate – from business communities seeking economic reform to traditional constituencies looking for respected leadership, and from federal stakeholders wanting better integration to local communities seeking more responsive governance.

The success of this partnership will largely depend on their ability to build a unified campaign organization and maintain cohesion among their diverse supporters. If they can successfully merge their respective political structures and create an efficient campaign machine, they would pose a serious organizational challenge to APGA’s established political network.

Their combined resources, experience, and networks provide the foundation for such organization, but the execution will be crucial. The ability to coordinate effectively across different constituencies and maintain message discipline will determine whether their potential translates into electoral success.

Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu and Senator Uche Ekwunife represent more than just another opposition challenge to APGA. Their political antecedents and appeal to the grassroots as well as other constituencies both formal and informal creates a unique political proposition that addresses many of the perceived weaknesses in the current system.

While APGA retains the advantages of incumbency and established governance structures, this partnership presents the kind of comprehensive alternative that could genuinely disrupt the political status quo. Their success will depend on their ability to maintain unity, execute effective campaigns, and convince voters that change is both necessary and achievable.

The political dynamics they bring to the table suggest that APGA will need to significantly up its game to maintain its hold on power. Whether this translates into electoral victory remains to be seen, but their candidature certainly represents the most formidable challenge APGA has faced in recent political cycles.

Ukachukwu said the President charged him and his running mate to bring the state to the centre.

“He has given us a charge to go and bring Anambra to the centre, and that’s what we’re going to do. Anambra cannot continue to be a one-party system.

”The President was in Anambra recently and saw how ready and how charged the party people are in Anambra. He was happy about the turnout of the people that came out to receive him.”

Ukachukwu said he was confident that the APC would triumph in the gubernatorial election because he and his running mate were the ones that made APGA strong.

“I was a former senatorial candidate of APGA. I left APGA with all my supporters to join APC. The Labour Party, the YPP and other political parties have joined us in the journey.

“We have over 80 groups that are lining up to join us. This makes APC to be bigger.  It means nothing is left of APGA in the state.

“It’s not the first time an incumbent will be losing an election; it happened in Zamfara, in Imo and other places. Even in Anambra too, so it’s not new to us in Anambra,” he said.

I will take Anambra to the centre- Ukachukwu

Anambra All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship flag bearer, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, has promised he will take the State to the centre, expressing optimism of defeating Governor Charles Soludo in the November 8 Anambra election.

He spoke on Wednesday at the National Secretariat of the ruling APC in Abuja after receiving his certificate of return as the party standard bearer.

The former federal lawmaker said that the incumbent Governor and the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance [APGA] does not have the level of acceptability with the electorates to actualise his second term aspiration at the poll.

Ukachukwu, who was optimistic of victory, said: “We are determined to get the best that can take Anambra state for the APC. Anambra needs to be connected to the centre for things to flow.

“Anambra state cannot be one party state any longer. We need to come to the centre to know what’s going on, so that our voices can he heard when decision are being taken. Anambra is the heartbeat of the Igbo nation and cannot remain a one party state because of selfish reasons.”

Faulting rumour in some quarters that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is in full support of Soludo’s re-election, the APC governorship hopeful said: “Those are lies where ever such talks are coming from. How can a President who always supports his party to win go and then say I will support somebody else instead.

“If APGA is sellable without the centre, why are they relying on the centre? This is the first time Soludo is bringing himself for election as a person. We will determine whether he is popular or not.

“We are ready for the battle. Don’t forget Mbadiniju did one term. What stops Soludo from doing one term? ” Ukachukwu asked.

He further said he is in the race because the people of Anambra state deserves much more attention from the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led administration.

Ukachukwu expressed gratitude to Tinubu and the Abdullahi Umar Ganduje-led National Working Committee (NWC) for ensuring a level playing field at the party primaries explained that unlike before, APC stalwarts would surely work in concert in ensuring the victory of the party in the governorship poll.

Notable Anambra State politician and businessman, Nicholas Ukachukwu, recently served notice of what it would take to keep him safe in his own native community and across the Southeast. It would take no less than a combined regiment of cross-service security operatives to do the job. This he suggested by applying for 16 soldiers, 20 policemen and 12 officers of the Department of State Services (DSS) to secure him during a scheduled trip this January to the region. The tycoon requested the heavy security to enable him to travel to his hometown in Osumenyi, Nnewi South council area, and other areas of the East to perform community functions.

Reports said Ukachukwu wrote in separate letters to heads of security agencies in Anambra State from which he was soliciting personnel, saying he was making the request owing to insecurity in the area. His application was on the heels of an attack by gunmen on the convoy of Anambra State political godfather, Chief Chris Uba, during the last Yuletide. The incident occurred at Uga junction, in Uba’s hometown, claiming the lives of two policemen and four other persons, while Uba managed to escape in his bulletproof vehicle.

In one of the letters he wrote – the one addressed to the Commander, 302 Artillery Regiment in Onitsha – Ukachukwu, who recently took Miss Universe Nigeria Mitchel Ihezue as wife, said he needed protection by the security operatives to perform functions he had lined up in the state during his visit. His application read in part: “I humbly write to request for 16 Army  personnel to provide security for me during my programs / activities in Anambra State and beyond, scheduled to commence on January 6th till 10th of January 2024, taking cognizance of security challenges in my hometown of Osumenyi in Nnewi South LGA.” He itemised the activities to include inspection of a personal road project at Osumenyi, dedication of a village church his family rehabilitated and funded, and mandatory traditional rites relating to his marriage in his wife’s hometown of Akaokwa.

By virtue of his social standing, Ukachukwu would already have a squad of security personnel servicing him. His request for an additional regiment to cover his visit underscores the current state of the Southeast and the siege of insecurity being experienced by residents. Notables who have come under hails of fire by gunmen in the region include Anambra State Senator Ifeanyi Ubah and former Imo State Governor Ikedi Ohakim, who respectively survived the attack but recorded heavy losses among their security orderlies. Chris Uba’s experience, which was the latest, was no different. The Southeast has to be rid of the menace of gunmen, and it is government’s responsibility to make this happen.
