  • EdoJobs, SLOT Foundation to commence 3-month IT training for Edo youths

    Determined to co-opt more youths to actively participate in the state’s burgeoning tech space, Governor Godwin Obaseki’s skills development platform, EdoJobs has partnered with SLOT Foundation to train youths in Esan West Local Government Area of the state on GSM and laptop maintenance.

    Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Job Creation and Skills Development, Mrs Ukinebo Dare, in a chat with journalists at the weekend, said that the training programme is coming after the impressive showing of the last batch of trainees.

    She said that the state government is committed to empowering youths and equipping them with in-demand skills for increased productivity, so they can meaningfully contribute to the state’s economy.

    According to her, “We will be partnering with SLOT Foundation for the training of youths in Esan West LGA. The training would last for three months. Of the three months, one would be for formal training while the other two will be for intensive practical.

    “They would be taken through the rudiments and would develop expertise in phone and laptop repairs, a skill-set that is widely sought after with the expansion of the tech ecosystem in Nigeria. The trainees will get the opportunity to work with a Slot franchise or go the entrepreneurial route. This would afford them the opportunity to eke out a decent living.”

    She added that the state government is keen on adding more jobs to the over 77000 created in the last two years, noting that EdoJobs role is to work with partners to create a conducive environment for skills development.

    She noted, “At EdoJobs we are confident about meeting the governor’s target of creating 200000 jobs before the end of his first tenure. We have been training people across the state in the past two years. This training at Esan West is to ensure that youths across the state get equal opportunity to lead a better life.”

     

  • EdoJobs, Curators University train more Edo youths on data science

    In an effort to groom programmers and techpreneurs in Edo State, Governor Godwin Obaseki’s skills development platform, EdoJobs, has partnered with Curators University to train more youths in Edo State on data science at the Edo Innovation Hub.

    Senior Special Assistant to Edo State Governor on Job Creation and Skills Development and Head, EdoJobs, Mrs Ukinebo Dare, disclosed this in a chat with journalists, noting that the training is in line with the governor’s pledge to create 200,000 jobs in the state.

    The training programme would be for the second batch of trainees, as a batch had earlier been trained to deploy data science and machine learning skills in solving societal problems. Members of that batch participated in the National Breast Cancer Hackathon organised by Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria and Access Bank and clinched the top two spots.

    Speaking on the training for the second batch, Mrs Dare said the state government is confident that the 5-day intensive training programme would groom a new set of innovators who would provide solutions to local problems in the state.

    According to her, “We are partnering with Curators University to train more youths on data science. The training will be for five days. This will give them the opportunity to learn how to deploy data in solving problems. Those expected at the training include university graduates, undergraduates or school leavers, who are interested in data science. The training will hold at the Edo Innovation Hub.”

    She noted that as the world continues to become accustomed to new technologies, the need for data scientists would increase as they help others understand information better.

    She said, “We are excited with the results we are getting from the different training ongoing at the Hub. We want to assure those interested in this training that they will get the best of practical and theoretical training in data science. It is open to those studying any course, aside computer scientists or economists from the universities.”

  • 75 fresh beneficiaries begin Graduate Internship Scheme in Edo

    Not less than 75 beneficiaries have commenced six months internship under the EdoJobs Graduate Internship and Apprenticeship scheme, an initiative of Governor Godwin Obaseki to provide graduates with relevant practical skills and industry-based experience.

    Speaking to journalists at an orientation programme organised for the interns at the Edo Innovation Hub, in Benin City, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Jobs Creation and Skills Development, Ukinebo Dare, said besides the long-term plan, the scheme is expected to bridge the job experience gap of graduates, even as they search for other job opportunities.

    Dare noted, “We have been able to find organisations who are in search of graduate interns. One major criteria we look out for in these organisations is the capacity to grow to absorb the interns at the completion of the six-month internship. Having the right manpower is one key success factor for organisations.”

    “Edo State Government will provide funding for the internship as the interns work for six months to gain relevant experience in these organisations,” she added.

    Dare explained that the 75 beneficiaries in the second batch of the scheme have been deployed to different organisations, which include those in the public and private sectors, where the graduates are expected to gain relevant experience with the possibility of being fully employed at the end of the scheme.

    She said the scheme is also for non-graduates, who are being deployed as apprentices to learn new skills and with the opportunity of being absorbed by the organisation where they work.

    One of the graduate interns, Vivian Oriere, a graduate of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, commended the state governor on the scheme, describing him as kind-hearted.

  • Edo production centre attracts 200 MSMEs

    With the guarantee of unparalleled business support opportunities and shared conducive working space, not less than 200 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) have expressed interest to site their businesses at the Edo Production Centre, a multipurpose production cluster promoted by Governor Godwin Obaseki for small businesses in the state.

    Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting with MSME operators in the state, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Hon. Edorodion Oye Erimona, said the centre will be a one-stop-shop for MSMEs to enjoy economies of scale and low cost of production.

    The centre, located along Sapele Road, in Benin City will host different MSMEs, including furniture makers, cobblers, welders, bakers, polythene makers and a number of other interested small business owners.

    Erimona noted that adequate security arrangement will be provided as well as sound-proof to make the centre environment friendly.

    “This centre will accommodate MSMEs while the Benin Industrial Park will host big industries. The electricity for the center will be drawn from the Ossiomo Power Purchase Arrangement. Pollution in the environment will be minimal as the businesses will be MSMEs,” he added.

    Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the governor on Skills Development and Job Creation, Mrs. Ukinebo Dare, said the centre will commence full operation before the end of January.

    Mrs. Dare said that a call was put out to meet with stakeholders and over 200 operators of MSMEs are expected at the facility, noting that major renovation work has been done, which necessitated the meeting with stakeholder to keep them abreast of the progress on the project so that they can key into it.

    According to her, “A month ago, the governor came to inspect this facility, which will be used as a multi-purpose production centre. We have commenced renovation of the facility. We have done the electrical work and we are working to make this place habitable by the end of January. The idea is to make sure that by the time the project is completed, it will be used by everyone in the target group.”

     

  • Edo unveils paid Graduate Internship Programme

    …targets 250 youths in first phase

    The Edo State Government through its job creation platform, EdoJobs, has concluded plans to launch the Edo Graduate Internship Programme (Edo-GIP), designed as a 6-month intensive paid internship with the aim of providing young people with access to work experience.

    EdoJobs is an initiative of Governor Godwin Obaseki to create employment opportunities for 200,000 youths in the state. It has been at the forefront of skills training and jobs creation in the state, providing  myriad of job opportunities for youths.

    Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Skills Development and Jobs Creation, Mrs. Ukinebo Dare, said “The EdoJobs Graduate Internship Programme (EDO-GIP) is a 6-month intensive internship (paid) and mentoring programme to give young people access to work experience and job opportunity with the potential to achieve a 70 per cent permanent employment rate.”

    She said the programme is targeting 250 graduates in the first phase and is being run in partnership with Romanspage Global, a top Human Resource Consulting firm, to train and engage young graduates for the EdoJobs Graduate Internship Programme (EDO-GIP)

    Noting that the programme will provide a foundation for beneficiaries to get employed or gain the right skills and mentoring to start their own businesses, she said, “EDO-GIP is aimed at providing opportunities for young graduates to explore their chosen career fields by assigning them to organisations (large corporations and SMEs) to learn the technical and practical skills required to launch into their desired career paths. At the end of the programme, participants would have acquired and developed transferable skills that would serve as an enviable foundation for building a successful career either as an employee or an entrepreneur.”

    She said interns are needed in Marketing/Sales, Information Technology, Finance/Account, Administration, Front Desk/Customer Service, Human Resources, among others, adding that successful applicants will “gain invaluable work experience during internship; get paid while learning on the job and will be trained on workplace skills before deployment to organisation.”

    Other benefits of the scheme, according to her, “are that beneficiaries will get valuable insights into business practices; explore their career path, have an edge in the job market and grow a network with professionals.”

    She said the applicants must hold a minimum of Bachelor’s degree or Higher National Diploma (HND), must have completed National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC), reside in Edo State, must not be older than 30 years old, must be registered on the EdoJobs portal, show willingness to learn new skills and must be ready to contribute to the organisation they are deployed to.

    She said application will commence from November 1, 2018 on www.edojobs.edostate.gov.ng.

  • EdoJobs, UNESCO, Google train 200 Edo children

    ..47 teachers on digital literacy

    …over 500 others to benefit from digital training programme

    EdoJobs, in collaboration with Google, Cape Town Science Centre, and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)’s Youth Mobile, has completed training for over 200 Edo youth on computer coding, to advance Governor Godwin Obaseki’s tech revolution in the state.

    Senior Special Assistant to the Edo State Governor on Skills Development and Job Creation, Mrs. Ukinebo Dare, in a chat with journalists said the training tagged Tekly Code Camps afforded participants hands-on skills on coding through which they can provide solutions to everyday problem.

    Dare noted that, “The Tekly Code camps supported by Google is an initiative of Curators University aimed at preparing African children for the future through coding and digital skills. This October, we are training over 700 youth which will include children and teenagers as well as over 50 teachers. So far, we have trained over 200 students. 47 teachers have been trained at the Edo Innovation Hub in Benin City.”

    She said the programme is “to introduce children and teenagers to coding as a first step to equipping them with 21st century skills which, unfortunately, are not catered for in the current school curriculum.”

    Dare added that school teachers are also expected to benefit from the programme, noting that there are concrete plans to sustain the training.

    “More training will be organised by the host, EdoJobs through holiday and weekend camps. This will provide opportunity to primary and secondary schools to bring in their children to learn the basics of coding so that these children will gain the rudiments of computing and develop interest in pursuing careers in computer programming. It will ensure that we have a sure supply of youth who will provide solutions to problems with the use of digital technology.”

  • Edojobs, Google, Gidimobile to deploy learning app to students

    Edo State Government has concluded plans to partner Google and Gidimobile, Africa’s first mobile learning platform, to deploy a learning application called gidimo to at least 20,000 Senior Secondary School students in Edo State, to improve learning outcomes.

    The partnership is being anchored by Edojobs, Edo state’s job creation and skills development platform, which will work with the companies, to mobilise not less than 150 ‘activators,’ to deliver the mobile software to the students.

    Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Skills Development and Job Creation, Mrs. Ukinebo Dare, who disclosed this to journalists, said that the partnership is aimed at providing innovative learning solutions to secondary school students as well as empowering those who would work as activators across the state.

    She said the programme is the offshoot of gidimo’s rollout of the app to 100,000 disadvantaged youths across the world, after winning a $1million grant from google.org. She said the deployment of the software will be piloted in Edo State, after which it will be rolled out across the country.

    According to her, “Governor Obaseki’s reforms and style of governance has once again attracted a landmark project to the state. This time, secondary school students will be the beneficiaries.

    To start the campaign in Edo State, 20,000 students will be granted free access to the gidimo application for a period of one year. A 45 mins to one-hour playtime after school (Monday to Saturday) will be needed to cover the syllabus, after which each user gets 300MB of data at the completion of their syllabus weekly. A competition amongst users/students with the application will be held every week, with the best user rewarded.

    She noted that teachers and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members will participate in the programme and will be assigned to schools as activators for the exercise, to sensitise students about the application, how to access and use the app for free.

    “This will come with a small remuneration (about N16,000) from funds allotted for data in the grant received from Google. The app will also allow for activators to earn some money from the retail sales/activation they do.”

    On the mode of operation in the pilot phase, she said, “A sample of 5-10 public schools in the state will be selected to pilot the campaign. The academic performance of students using the gidimo app in these schools will be compared with those not using the application to identify the efficacy of the application on the students under survey.

    “National competition will be held weekly across various subjects on the application. This is can be in an organised event platform, which can be used to spread the government’s message on its effort towards improving the educational sector in the state.”

  • Edo Govt, Orhionmwon LGA identify priority projects

    …mull skills center in Okogbo

    Following the inauguration of Ward Development Committees in Orhionmwon Local Government Area, by the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, officials of the state government have commenced engagement with community leaders, resulting in the identification of the need for a skills center by indigenes and residents of Okogbo in Ukpato Ward of the local council.

    The priority projects were agreed on at a meeting attended by the officials of the state government and community leaders and other members of the community.

    The Commissioner for Arts, Culture, Tourism and Diaspora Affairs, Hon. Osazee Osemwingie-Ero, said members of the community would be trained in textile design, leather works, welding and fabrication, sewing, among others, as the state government rolls out its machineries to deepen grassroots development.

    Osaze-Ero noted that more infrastructural projects including the construction of mini-stadium and roads are in the offing as Governor Godwin Obaseki is committed to upscaling development in the local council area.

    He said the projects will discourage illegal migration among the youth, adding that members of the community and their leaders must do more to support the effort of the government.

    Member, representing Orhionmwon Constituency I in Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Roland Asoro, said the Obaseki-led administration was making history by constructing the first tarred road in the community.

    Asoro said it would only be rational to reciprocate the gestures of the state government.

    Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Skills Development and Job Creation, Mrs. Ukinebo Dare, explained that all government’s Ministries, Departments and Agencies in the state will contribute to the success of the center, as plans are underway to equip the youth with relevant skills.

    She urged members of the community to take ownership of the project and protect it from vandals.

    Mrs. Ukinebo said officials of EdoJobs were already visiting wards across the local government council to identify individuals, who are unemployed to pave way for the siting of skills development centres across the local government for training youth in various skills.

    Community leaders and residents of the community described the project as laudable and pledged to cooperate with the state government in protecting it.

    Sequel to its launch only last week, the Edo Innovates tech cluster has concluded modalities for The Hack Edo Series, a multi-dimensional initiative to identify and incubate the best ideas that tackle problems of power generation and distribution faced by individuals, businesses and the digital ecosystem, with a N3.5 million prize money.

    In a statement by Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Skills Development and Jobs Creation, Mrs. Ukinebo Dare, said that The Hack Edo Series which is being organised in partnership with Impact Hub and Siemens Nigeria, will leverage innovation technology to identify solutions in the area of power generation, adding that N3.5 million in cash prizes will be won by the best ideas.

    She said starts-ups or groups with ideas can apply on the Edo jobs website, as deadline for application is on June 30.

    According to her, “Through a series of practical Hackathons, the Hack Edo series aims to equip young Nigerian innovators with the skills necessary to make impact in their various communities.”

    She said the series will help increase the number of individuals taking action on social and economic issues, build a collaborative community that tackles issues and identify the best ideas that will be supported through the incubation phase.

    She said the hackathons will catalyse high-growth startups within Edo State, support development of ventures from ideation to commercialization and promote job creation and economic development, adding, “this will drive and ensure the increased adoption of local technology by government, corporates and development agencies across Edo state and Nigeria, strengthen and raise the standard of startups in the region and deliver positive social impact returns to communities and people across the region.”

    Recall that the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, alongside Governor Godwin Obaseki, last week, launched the South-South Innovation Hub in the state, kicking off activities for the state’s fledging tech ecosystem at the remodeled Institute of Continuing Education (ICE).

    The state government has partnered with over 25 technology firms in setting up the facility, which will serve as a one-stop shop for training, incubation, acceleration for start-ups and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the state.

  • Edo to train 200 youths on solar panel installation, photography, others

    Edo State Government has concluded plans to partner with the After Graduate Development Centre to train 200 youths on solar panel installation, photography and cosmetology.

    The training programme, conducted through Edojobs, is aimed at equipping the youths with in-demand vocational, business intelligence and financial literacy skills. Youths will also be mentored to apply for business funding during the programme.

    The trainees are to be drawn from Edo North, South and Central senatorial districts of the state.

    Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Edo State Governor on Skills Development and Head of EdoJobs, Ukinebo Dare, expressed her gratitude to the Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki, for attracting the programme which is funded by ACT Foundation to the state.

    She said that the training will fast-track the realisation of the governor’s promise of creating a minimum of 200,000 jobs. She also noted that it will also equip the 200 participants with skills and resources to be self-reliant as trainees will be guided to access credit from the Bank of Industry (BoI).

    She also noted that the state’s Ministry of Science and Technology is recruiting new hands for its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and encouraged job seekers to get details and apply on the EdoJobs Portal.

    According to her “application for the 200 slots on the training being run by EdoJobs in partnership with AGDC (After Graduate Development Centre) is ongoing and individuals desirous of becoming brand names in the different fields, should apply right away on edojobs.edostate.gov.ng

    The training programmes are on Solar Panel Installation and Maintenance, Photography as well as Makeup and Cosmetology.”
