Lagos-Calabar Coastal Project: Obi inciting southeast people against govt, says Umahi

The minister of works, Dave Umahi, has alleged that former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, is inciting people of the southeast, especially those who are not well informed, against the government.

Obi had on Tuesday expressed his displeasure on the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project stating that the government is embarking on a job-losing project at a time of rampant unemployment.

Umahi, reacting to the statement on Wednesday, May 1, at an event organized by the Federal Ministry of Work to compensate property owners affected by the Lagos- Calabar coastal road prospect, claimed that Obi would not fight for the people even after getting them into trouble.

There have also been mixed reactions following the demolition of Landmark Beach Resort, valued at $200 million, to create a right of way for the project which is estimated to cost the federal government N15 trillion.

However, Umahi insisted there was no inhumanity meted to Landmark and that the matter should be buried because he was actively involved.

The former Ebonyi state governor alleged that Obi goes around to condemn people, thereby bringing judgment upon himself.

He said: “It brings to some of the comments made by my brother, his Excellency Mr Peter Obi, I am not supposed to comment about it because some people have already done the work. And I know what Arise Television brought courtesy of Channels Television, they were bringing similar scenarios when His Excellency Peter Obi was the governor. He made a statement saying any infrastructure that stands in the way of the road must go. And there would be no compensation paid.” That’s what he said.

“But look at me, by the human face of the renewed hope agenda administration, we are even paying for people who are illegally staying on the coastal line, and don’t have valid infrastructure and valid documents. That is mercy, that’s mercy… You know some people darken counsel without knowledge. You know there’s the devil in the details.

“When you condemn people, you bring judgment upon yourself. And that is what he (Obi) has done. And I think he’s inciting some of the southeast people that are not well informed. He is inciting them. And gets them into trouble. And he doesn’t go to fight for them. Wisdom is a defence. And I want our people to have wisdom because I am involved.

“There’s is no inhumanity meted to Landmark, that matters should be buried because I was there. And so we fought everything possible. Even some people donated property to save his two big infrastructures. That’s appreciation. But some people have taken sides along with him to play politics.”

Umahi gets presidential directive on Sokoto-Badagry Highway design

A presidential directive has been given on the immediate design of the Badagry-Sokoto Expressway, Works Minister Dave Umahi said yesterday.

Umahi spoke after inspecting the end of Section One (Phase I) of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and its realignment in Lagos.

The minister said: “I’m happy that Mr. President has also directed me to start the immediate design of the Badagry-Sokoto Expresswa.

“This one is a spur of the Coastal Highway and it is 1000 kilometres. We’ve started the design and I’m very sure that as soon as Federal Executive Council approves it, we will be starting at Sokoto side, which is the zero point.

“We also have another spur which is going to go from Enugu -Abakaliki-Ogoja going to Cameroon.

“So, we have that spur and it’s about 361 kilometres, going through Otukpo to Benue to Nasarawa and ends at Apo in Abuja.

“We are also going to be presenting it to Mr. President, and when this is done. Then the coastal routes as we promised, will go to circle the entire country.”

The minister said upon completion, the coastal road would connect the Southwest, Southsouth, Northeast, Northwest and Northcentral regions.

Umahi expressed strong belief in the significance of the coastal road project, which he said would be the first of its kind in Africa.

The minister said: “So, this will be the legacy that we’ve never seen in Africa, and I think that God has sent Mr. President to do this and he’s just doing it.

“He’s a man of courage and we are also learning courage following him.”

Stressing the importance of the approach, Umahi reassured that compensation for affected property owners will be paid without delays.

He gave the assurance in a statement on Sunday by his spokesman, Uchenna Orji, while flaging-off the demolition of affected properties on Section 1 of the 700-kiliometre highway being handled by Hitech Construction Company Ltd.

Expressing government’s concern for the well-being of the people, the minister assured that the demolition process would be carried out with a human face.

He urged the affected individuals to show understanding and see it as a sacrifice for the ultimate impact of the project on the economic prosperity of the nation.

The statement reads: “We are doing some minor adjustments, and our commitment is to stay within the coastline.

“When the initial demolition order was passed to all the affected investors, so to speak, I graciously extended the period to another seven days and yet another four days, and here we are because the project stopped because of the part of this demolition.

Umahi: What’s up with Ayegun-Oleyo road in Ibadan?

    By Oladapo Folawiyo

The Federal Government approved a list of roads in October 2023 for construction through the supplementary budget of 2023. They were termed Palliative roads with the Minister for Works- Umahi David promising that work will start on them before December 1st 2023.

Listed among the roads is Ayegun-Oleyo road in Oluyole Local Government Ibadan of which 17km length was approved for construction at the cost of =N=1.5bn. In December 2023, house marking was done to indicate encroachment areas marked for demolition for the construction.

The building marking was the only thing done till now while the road is becoming more terrible day by day with agonising pain to users. A call was placed in February to one of the contact lines 08030986263 advertised by the ministry for works on feedback on the road construction.

The receiver advised the caller to contact the Senator and the House of Representative member for the constituency because all the roads that fall within the control of the ministry were already awarded out. I will like to call on the Minister of Works to use his good office to see to the realisation of this road.

    Umahi’s ministration to Nigerian roads

Those who are still doubting the nose of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for talents need no further evidence than his choice of former Governor of Ebonyi State, Senator Dave Umahi CON, as Minister of Works. In less than a year in office, Umahi, a civil engineer, has given a new lease of life to our federal roads, which prior to now, received uncomplimentary media coverage. Gradually, news about “death traps” and “deplorable highways” are vanishing in both the print and electronic media.

This feat has brought enormous succour to Nigerian road users, who hitherto suffered unquantifiable losses from road accidents arising from bad roads. While many Nigerians lost loved ones in these road carnages, the survivors ended up with one form of disability or the other. Several expensive cars and others vehicles were damaged, some beyond repair. The tide turned since Pastor Umahi started ministering to our roads.

Granted that many of the roads were under construction before he assumed office at the Federal Ministry of Works, the pace was slow and the quality poor. He quickened the pace and improved the quality of work on the roads by introducing the concrete pavement technology. Although the asphalt pavement previously used was seen as cheaper and more flexible, experts in road construction agree that concrete pavement guarantees ease of construction, durability and reduced cost of maintenance of the roads.

Unlike many of his predecessors in the works ministry who concentrated more on paperwork, Umahi, being on a familiar terrain, has been traversing the entire country with his team, supervising ongoing road projects to ensure that they are executed according to specification. In less than eight months, he crisscrossed the six geo-political zones of the country, inspecting ongoing work on federal roads in many states, including Kogi, Ekiti, Edo, Enugu, Imo, Oyo, Imo, Osun, Abia and Kaduna, among others.

Even people who do not like his face are applauding his performance in the road sector in Nigeria. His experience in the construction industry predated his emergence as Governor. Although Umahi honed his skills in engineering as a young contractor, he became a master of construction during his eight years as Governor of Ebonyi State from 2015 to 2023.

Having last visited Ebonyi about a decade ago, this writer couldn’t find his way when he visited Abakiliki, the state capital, a few weeks back. The flyovers that Umahi constructed made the city look awesome. I noticed that almost all the major roads were reconstructed with concrete pavement. The roads looked both splendid and solid.

Besides, I saw a new Government House, hosting the Governor’s Office and almost the entire government ministries. Ironically, Ebonyi State was created six years after the creation of my home state, Anambra. But governors in Anambra still operate from the temporary Governor’s Office donated to the state government by a construction company when the state was created in 1991. This is a discussion for another day.

As Minister of Works, Umahi has once more proved his mettle in the area of construction. But no matter how excellently one performs in Nigeria, there are bound to be criticisms. I heard some people murmuring about the “transformative” Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. While I may not be in a position to comment in details about the project, my expectation is that someone who wishes to criticise, must do so with accurate and verifiable information. Critics of the proposed coastal road alleged that it would cost a whooping N8 billion to construct a kilometre. Umahi dismissed the claim in a live television interview, stating in black and white, that a kilometre will cost N4 billion.

I suspect that the critics were either speaking from outdated knowledge or deep-seated antagonism of the government. Going by the current cost of construction materials, I don’t see anything strange in spending N15 trillion within a duration of eight years to construct a 700km dual carriage highway, starting from Lagos State, passing through seven states-Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers and Akwa Ibom States- before terminating in Cross River State. What is wrong about spending such an amount on a road that will shorten the distance between Lagos and Calabar by 200 kilometres? This is a legacy project that deserves the support of all and sundry.

Besides, I expect those complaining about the bidding process, to tell us if there was competitive bidding when the country’s choice assets and companies, numbering over 200, were sold at give-away prices to cronies and cohorts, under their supervision. They include Delta Steel Company, NICON Insurance, Egbim Power, Ughelli Power, NAFCON, NICON Luxury Hotel, Bacita Sugar Limited, NITEL, Daily Times, Eleme Petrochemical, to mention but a few.

The privatisation of these companies made thousands, if not millions of Nigerians, to lose their jobs. The resultant effect is the high unemployment rate, seen as one of the enablers of the widespread insecurity in the country today. So, those criticising Umahi over the coastal road project should understand that there is a limit to deceit and falsehood.

I will conclude by quoting a popular statement of the 16th President of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865): “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.”
