  • Police nab five man armed robbery gang in Katsina

    The Katsina State Police Command on Thursday arrested a five man armed robbery gang, who had been terrorizing Funtua in the southern part of the state and its environs recovering in the process, one locally fabricated rifle.

    The Police Public Relations Officer, PPPRO, in the state, Superintendent Isa Gambo, who signed a press release on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Wakil, said nemesis caught up with the suspects when they invaded the house of one Haruna Idris of Dan-Dutse Quarters, Funtua.

    Supro Gambo further gave out the names of those arrested to include: Umar Yahaya, 24, Abdulmalik Yahaya, 20. Abdulrashid Musa, 20 Abdurrahman Suleman, 21, all of Maigamji village in Funtua LGA.

    He said ’’The exhibit items recovered on the suspects include one fabricated locally made Rifle, one Toy Gun, two sharp knives, one cutlass, Torchlight, nine thousand and eighty naira cash, four gsm handsets and one military cap.

    In a related development, the Police have also announced the arrest of a gang of suspected cattle rustlers/kidnappers numbering about twelve at Dandume and Safana Local Government Areas of the state who were armed with AK 47 rifles and invaded Dallawa Mahuta village where they shot one Aminu Maharazu, 20.

    According to the press release’’ the villagers organized themselves and gave the hoodlums a hot chase and during the encounter the villagers succeeded in killing three of the bandits while the rest took to their heels and escaped into the bush.

    Police patrol teams were immediately dispatched to the scene and combed the bush’’.

    ‘’They recovered five (5) rounds of 5.56mm live ammunitions along with three empty shells of expended ammunition’’.

    ‘’Also the corpse of one Isiya Bello of Gamji village, Sabuwa LGA of Katsina state, a notorious gang leader of kidnappers, terrorizing Dandume, Sabuwa and Ankara, was identified among the hoodlums being killed by the brave villagers’’.

    Police patrol team on routine patrol along Alhazawa village, Safana LGA of Katsina state had a fierce encounter with a gang of Cattle rustlers/Kidnappers and succeeded in gunning down the ring leader one Audu Bello alias Gemu, 40, of Rugu forest.

    The gang has been identified to be responsible for the Gora village attack which occurred recently’’.

  • Kano Hisbah Board records 50 cases in three weeks

    The Kano State Hisbah Board said it received 50 cases bordering on prostitution and missing children in the last three weeks.

    The board Public Relations Officer, Mallam Umar Yahaya made this known to newsmen on Tuesday in Kano.

    Yahaya said that out of the number of cases, 36 were on prostitution, 12 on missing street urchins who were repatriated back to their states and two cases on missing items.

    The public relations officer said the board was committed to its mandate of ridding the society of social ills, adding that efforts would be intensified to restore moral sanity in the state.

    He said the board also received N2.5 million for the upkeep of breastfeeding mothers who had problems with their husbands.

    Yahaya urged members of the public to support the efforts of the board at ensuring a better society.

  • Kano Hisbah Board records 106 cases in March

    The Kano State Hisbah Board received 106 cases in March and it covered prostitution, matrimonial disputes and disagreements among neighbours, Malam Umar Yahaya said on Wednesday.

    Yahaya , the Public Relations Officer of the board, told the News men in Kano that the cases were also related to debts, breastfeeding and consumption of alcohol.

    Hisbah Board arrests 21 beggars in one week – Official

    Kano State Hisbah Board said on Tuesday that it had arrested 21 beggars for allegedly violating the law banning street begging in the state in one week.

    Malam Umar Yahaya, the Public Relations Officer of the Board, disclosed this while speaking in Kano.

    Yahaya said that the suspects were arrested in different raids in the metropolis, adding that eight of them were children, while 13 were adults.

    The public relations officer explained that the arrests were carried out in areas around Bata, Bank and Kabuga roads.

    He added that the board had released 11 of them after being identified as first time offenders, while the rest 10 were taken to court.

    Yahaya enjoined beggars to acquire vocational skills to sustain themselves rather than rely on street begging for livelihood.

    Hisbah is the enforcement arm of Sharia Law.

    He said apart from the parent company, Leadway Assurance Company Limited, other companies within the Group include Leadway Capital and Trusts Ltd., Leadway Hotels Ltd. and Leadway Properties and Investments.

    He noted that the N101.2 billion represents 47 per cent growth from the Group’s N68.8 billion figures recorded in the 2012 financial year.

    He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to clients by paying claims in excess of N10.9billion, a 51 per cent increase from the N7.2 billion record of 2012.

    He said: “Leadway Group has come a long way since the establishment in 1970 to carry on the business of composite insurance.

    “It has an effective Board of Directors comprising men and women of integrity with several decades of experience in the financial services and other diverse fields. The Board is collectively responsible for the success of the company and works with management to achieve this with the management remaining accountable to the Board.

    The Board meets at least four times yearly and objectively take decisions in the interests of the company. The Chairman and Chief Executive officer are separate persons and this is to ensure an appropriate balance of power, increased accountability and greater capacity of the Board for independent decision making”.

    The Chairman further said that though the management has an obligation to supply the Board with complete, adequate information in a timely manner, relying purely on what is volunteered by management is unlikely to be enough in all circumstances and further enquiries may be required if the particular Director is to fulfill his or her duties properly. Hence, the Board has separate and independent access to the Company’s senior management.
