  • Umeh: Ekwunife can’t contest on APC

Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Chief Victor Umeh has said the defection of Senator Ucher Ekwunife, representing Anambra Central, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) disqualified her from contesting in the rerun.

Umeh spoke at the weekend in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

The Appeal Court in Enugu State on December 6, 2015, nullified Ekwunife’s election on grounds of irregularities and ordered a rerun within 90 days.

But Ekwunife, last Friday, announced her defection from the PDP, under which she contested the annulled election.

Chief Umeh insisted that the Appeal Court’s judgment already disqualified Ekwunife from being part of the rerun, saying her defection with the intention of flying the APC’s flag was done in ignorance.

“I think she is exhibiting crass ignorance of the laws. When she is disqualified by the Court of Appeal, there is no way she would be part of the election any longer.

“The law is that the dramatic personae in the previous election will contest the rerun. The Supreme Court, in 2009, in a judgment delivered by Justice Ogbuagu made it clear that a candidate cannot be changed or withdrawn in a rerun because the period of nomination had elapsed and cannot be resurrected under any guise.

“So joining the APC in pursuant of a ticket that is not available, is a decision made in ignorance,” Umeh said.

    •Ekwunife faults judgment

The Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu State has upheld the elections of Senator Andy Uba and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Chief Victor Umeh.

Former Enugu State Governor Chimaroke Nnamani lost his appeal challenging Senator Gilbert Nnaji, who defeated him in the Enugu East Senatorial election.

The court set aside the judgment of the lower tribunal, which last month ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a fresh election within 90 days. Nnamani challenged the declaration of Nnaji as the winner of the March 28 election, alleging irregularities.

The court also struck out the result of the forensic exercise, which the lower tribunal relied on in nullifying Nnaji’s election because, according to it, the forensic expert restricted himself to three councils instead of six.

The court also considered Dr. Ernest Ndukwe’s appeal and Uba’s cross appeal and concluded that Ndukwe failed to comply with Paragraph 4(1) (1) of the Electoral Act, 2010.

Uba’s non-qualification, as pleaded by Ndukwe, was thrown out on the grounds that Ndukwe raised the point without proof and that Uba had the right to deny without proof.

Nullifying Senator Uche Ekwunife’s election, the appellate court ordered INEC to conduct a fresh election in Anambra Central within 90 days.

The three-man panel, led by Justice A.H. Yahya, upheld Umeh’s appeal challenging Ekwunife’s election, saying: “The perverse decision of the lower tribunal cannot stand. This appeal stands and INEC is ordered to conduct a fresh election in Anambra Central within 90 days.”

Reacting to the judgment, Umeh thanked the court for dispensing justice without fear or favour.

He described the judgment as a victory for democracy and rule of law.

“We will go into the election prepared unlike in the past when our opponents had the police, Army, INEC and everybody. This time, we will subject ourselves to the will of the people. The era of impunity is gone. We now have a government of change and we will ensure that only people with integrity will conduct the election,” he said.

There was a victory dance by some members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) as the news filtered in.

But Ekwunife described the judgment as a fatal principle of democracy.

The judgment has thrown Anambra Central into confusion.

However, Ekwunife is optimistic she would win the rerun. She described the judgment as that of man and not God, urging her supporters to remain calm.

She said: “The judgment is that of man. The court acted as a Father Christmas by awarding to Chief Victor Umeh, what he did not ask for.

“But I take the judgment in good faith, believing that my victory at the poll was an act of God. I assure my supporters that we will emerge victorious even as I thank Ndi Anambra Central for their support so far.”

The court also upheld the elections of Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and Senator Obinna Ogba (Ebonyi Central).

  • Obiano, Umeh and the future of APGA

Obiano, Umeh and the future of APGA

Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, appears to be fully in charge of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) amid silent grumblings from some party leaders, reports Remi Adelowo

Since his inauguration as Anambra State Governor about two years ago, Chief Willie Obiano has left no one in doubt that he would brook no dissent to his leadership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Early signs that the governor was not willing to play second fiddle to his predecessor, Peter Obi in the running of the state and the party emerged minutes after he took the oath of office at the Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, the state capital, say sources within and outside the state.

Following the formal handover by Obi, some party leaders had requested the new governor to see him off to the airport as a mark of respect and courtesy, but it was a blunt Obiano, who allegedly declined without offering any further explanation or reason for his action.

Stunned beyond words, the party leaders however took the governor’s action in their strides. But that was not all. In subsequent days, weeks and months, the governor reportedly ordered top government officials to severe their ties with Obi, while warning of dire consequences for disobedience.

    A crisis foretold?

For keen watchers of Anambra politics and the events leading to the election of Obiano as governor in 2014, it came as a shock the fall-out between the two men whose relationship dated back many decades.  Apart from being childhood friends in Onitsha where they grew up, two men were also school mates at the prestigious Catholic Secondary School, Onitsha and Christ the King College (CKC).

And until he ventured into politics, Obiano was an Executive Director at Fidelity Bank, a financial institution Obi is believed to have substantial interest. It was strongly believed then that Obi allegedly preferred the Aguleri-born chartered accountant and banker above other aspirants to succeed him, as he regarded him as the only person loyal enough to “watch his back” when he leaves office.

Though there are conflicting reports on why the two men went their separate ways, one side of the argument has it that Obi felt betrayed that his bosom friend had from the outset of his administration, made several efforts to obliterate his legacies as governor.

Obiano’s administration had hardly taken-off before Obi left APGA for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ostensibly to campaign for a second term for ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

However, some of his loyalists in the state were of the view that Obi left APGA out of frustration, since he was allegedly shut out of the mainstream of the party and the new government of the state.

Obi himself attested to this when he stated through his spokesman, Val. Obienyem that for several months following his nomination as the Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT) of APGA, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party refused to confirm him.

But Obiano’s grouse, according to sources, is Obi’s decision to leave APGA, a move he sees as a deliberate ploy to undermine his governorship. At some point, Obiano’s supporters had accused Obi of blocking Obiano from having access to the Presidency.

It was further alleged that Obi was instrumental to the mass exodus of members of the House of Representatives from the state to PDP with the intention of crippling the party in the state.

But speaking at the ceremony to mark his one year in office, Obiano denied any rift with Obi, saying, “On a personal note, we don’t have any problem. He was three years my junior in school. He was my chairman at the bank. Honestly, his vote made me an executive director at Fidelity Bank. He led the team that invited me to join his campaign. We are not fighting for anything. He chose to go to PDP and I am in APGA. That is an ideological difference; that is the main problem. I can’t see him come here and say APGA people should vote for PDP.”

He said further, “I want to assure you that on personal ground, we don’t have any problem, but we have ideological problem because he believes that he has finished with APGA and APGA is gone. Then I assured him that under my watch, APGA will be better and bigger than he left it. That is the motivation for me to do many things for APGA to prove a point that you cannot rock the boat that made you. You want to sink it as you leave, so they can say you were in this party and when you left, it died.”

    Reconciliation that failed

Shortly before and after the last general elections, Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, had during a visit of former President Jonathan requested him to reconcile Obiano and Obi.

Surprised by the monarch’s demand, Jonathan immediately asked the two prominent citizens of the state to act in response to the traditional ruler’s appeal.

Initially, both Obi and Obiano were reluctant to shake each other, but following the insistence of Igwe Achebe, they hugged and patted each other’s back. But as it later turned out, that “reconciliation” was just for the camera and not deep seated.

    Obiano eases out Umeh

With Obi out of the way, Obiano unarguably became the APGA leader. With the support of the then National Chairman of the party, Chief Victor Umeh, the governor was seemingly unstoppable.

It was soon Umeh’s turn to lose out in the power game. His ambition to contest the Anambra Central senatorial seat in the last general elections, sources say, was his undoing.

Curiously however, Umeh wanted to retain his chairmanship seat while still running for the senatorial election. But the governor would have none of this. He reportedly asked Umeh to choose either the chairmanship seat or running for the Senate. Umeh opted for the latter. Step in Victor Ike Oye as the new National Chairman of APGA.

    Umeh plots comeback

But as soon as Umeh lost the senatorial election to Uche Ekwunife of the PDP, sources disclosed that he made spirited attempts to stage a comeback as the National Chairman, a move that was resisted by the governor and his supporters.

Expectedly, Umeh is seething. Sources close to him disclosed that he is angry with the governor for allegedly “using him to get Obi out of APGA only to dump him afterwards.”

What does future hold for APGA?

Can APGA presently in control of one state, Anambra, hold its own before and after the 2019 general elections? This is the big question on the lips of watchers of party politics in the country, some of whom fear that the party, as presently constituted, may be consumed by ruling APC or PDP within the next few years.

A few months ago, rumours were rife that Governor Obiano had allegedly concluded negotiations with the national leadership of the APC to defect to the party, a report he later denied.

Shortly before President Muhammadu Buhari was inaugurated into office on May 29, Obiano had visited him in his private residence in Abuja, a development which further fuelled the rumour mill that the governor was on his way to APC.

But speaking to journalists later, the governor dismissed the rumour, saying, “It (defection) is not correct. I will remain with APGA and work very closely with Mr. President.”

Whether Obiano will stick to his words or ditch the platform that brought him to limelight however remains to be seen.

Umeh takes PDP, INEC to tribunal

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh, has challenged the victory of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra Central at the Elections Petitions Tribunal.

He said the fraud was too obvious to be ignored, adding that PDP perpetrated the act with ignominy.

“I decided to come to court to challenge the process, which we had on March 28 because it was flawed. PDP agents in Anambra State manipulated the process.

“We have enough evidence to show that we won the election, and we have brought here Certified True Copies of documents, which we have presented before the tribunal. We are hopeful that we will reclaim our mandate because it is not the first time we have done this.”

Umeh also urged President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari to investigate happenings during the elections.

“I also call on the President-elect, Buhari, to investigate the presidential election in the Southeast. It has always been the norm for PDP bigwigs to sabotage the people.

“We believe that our coming to court will help to retrieve our mandate, and the electoral reform which the President-elect is to champion, will help us to achieve success,” Umeh said.

Umeh calls for cancellation of elections in Abia

Chief Victor Umeh, the National Chairman, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has called for the cancellation of the Abia governorship and the state House of Assembly elections over alleged irregularities.

Speaking with newsmen at Aguluzigbo in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra after casting his vote on Saturday, Umeh described the entire exercise in Abia as a “sham”.

“From the reports so far gathered, there were no materials on ground and collation officers with result sheets could not be found.

“There are also reports of fake security personnel moving about in the state intimidating people.”

Umeh, who is also the Anambra Central Senatorial candidate of APGA, called for the arrest of some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the alleged irregularities in Abia.

He, however, commended the peaceful conduct of the election in Anambra but noted that the exercise in the state witnessed voter apathy.

Umeh attributed the poor turnout to voters’ discontent with the outcome of March 28 presidential national assembly elections.

“The fraudulent result announced on March 28 elections affected the morale of the people and resulted to voter apathy in today’s election,” Umeh said.

The party boss further observed that the card readers again failed in some areas of the state and urged INEC to reschedule the polls in the affected areas including Nri, Agulu and Ichida.

In a related development, a former governor of the state, Mr. Peter Obi, said the card reader deployed for use in many polling units failed.

He urged INEC to do the needful to ensure that his people take part in the exercise.

  • Obiano, Umeh battle Obi, Ngige for assembly seats

Obiano, Umeh battle Obi, Ngige for assembly seats

The victory of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Mohammadu Buhari, in the March 28 presidential election has altered the political equation in Anambra State.

The battle has shifted to today’s state assembly elections because there will be no governorship election in the since the last one only took place about one year ago.

Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh, will have their hands full against the All Progressives Congress (APC) strongman, Sen. Chris Ngige, and former Governor Peter Obi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The former relationship between Obiano, Umeh and Obi had been broken with the trio engaging one another in war of words since Obi defected to the PDP.

During the presidential and National Assembly elections on March 28, Obiano and Umeh were boxed to a corner by Obi, leading to the failure of virtually all the APGA candidates for the National Assembly seats.

It also affected Umeh who vied for the central senatorial seat for his APGA, while Dr. Ngige of the APC was also not left out.

Both APGA and APC alleged that Obi and his PDP muscled their parties’ candidates with the influence of President Goodluck Jonathan, by deploying the military and other security agencies to back the PDP candidates and chieftains.

What happened during the elections have pitted Obiano, Umeh and Ngige against Obi, who acted as Deputy Director General, Goddluck Jonathan’s Campaign Organisation in the South.

Since Jonathan’s failure to win the presidential election, opinions have been formed in Anambra State on the need for the people to align with the federal might.

Majority of the people have already decided to vote in favour of the APC candidates in today’s state assembly election, while the governor and his party (APGA) are battling to redeem their image already battered by Obi and PDP.

Obi on his part has been working round the clock to see that the PDP wins majority of the seats in the state house of assembly in order to get at Obiano.

Security operatives who spoke with our correspondent in Awka yesterday vowed not to allow themselves to be used by anybody.

APGA women decry attack on Obiano, Umeh

Women for Good Governance (WGG), a group in the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has condemned the attack on Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano, Chief Victor Umeh and other members of the APGA campaign team at Agulu in Anaocha Local Government.

Obiano, APGA senatorial candidate for Anambra Central, Umeh and other members went to the hometown of former Governor Peter Obi to campaign when youths attacked them, destroying their vehicles and billboards.

The group decried the attack, describing it as despicable, detestable, reprehensible and repugnant to democratic ethos. It alleged that it was the handiwork of desperate politicians.

A statement on behalf of the group by its coordinator, Mrs. Grace Chike, called for an end to such an action, which it said was not in the interest of democracy.

The statement reads: “We wonder why failed politicians should hire and hoodwink youths in Agulu to stone Governor Obiano, APGA senatorial candidate for Anambra Central, Chief Umeh and supporters campaigning in the area. They destroyed vehicles and billboards.

“We frown at this primitive, do-or-die politics in this era of issue-based civilised politicking.”

The body also condemned the attack on the party’s campaign team of former Minister of Information Labaran Maku, who is gunning for the Nassarawa State governorship on APGA’s platform. It described it as the height of irresponsible politics.

WGG said those behind the attack were afraid of the ex- minister’s popularity and grassroots support, which had changed political equation in the state, alleging that the cabal that held the state hostage since 1999 sponsored the attack to intimidate Maku.

“The former minister has remained focused and will never be distracted by frustrated politicians with no vision for a greater Nassarawa State.”

The APGA women said they were shocked by the destruction of four campaign offices and 15 vehicles of the party’s governorship candidate, Sani Shinkafi, in Zamfara State. They wondered why APGA candidates had become target of violence.

The women said: “This is man’s inhumanity to man and a giant step backward in our democratic process. We demand a stop to this madness. Let the word go out to the perpetrators of this crime and their sponsors that APGA is a mass movement and a change agent that cannot be crushed by disgruntled elements. If the objective is to quench APGA’s progressive flame, it has failed. We demand a stop to this dangerous political naivety.

Suspected thugs destroy Umeh’s billboards, posters

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh, has alleged that suspected hoodlums have destroyed his billboards and posters in Anambra Central.

He is the party’s candidate for Anambra Central senatorial zone.

When The Nation went round the zone at the weekend, Umeh’s 27 billboards had been destroyed. His posters were either torn or defaced at Agukwu Nri, Amawbia, Agulu, Adazi ani, Nkpor and Borromeo roundabout.

Umeh’s campaign Director- General, Obele Chuka Obele, said what happened was a bad precedent in Anambra politics.

The APGA senatorial candidate at the weekend visited the monarch of Obosi in Idemili North Local Government, Igwe Chidubem Iweka, who assured him of his subjects’ support.

Umeh said he was not in the race for selfish reasons, but to give the people the dividends of democracy.

THE Rehabilitation Centre for the disabled, Old and Tramps (RECDOT), Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State will mark its 15th Year Anniversary and Fund Raising before the end of October, 2014. Nigeria’s Senate President, David Mark, Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano and National Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Chief Victor Umeh will team up with the inmates of the centre on the day.

The founder of the home, Mrs. Rosemary Odunukwe said yesterday that the desire to remove children from the streets so as to give them the love of a mother began through the adoption of an abandoned child who was left in a refuse dump was the reason for its establishment.

The Rehabilitation centre, according to her had one hundred and sixty persons (160) as against nine when it was established. She said the home was targeted at bringing God’s love to the needy by not only providing them with basic needs of life but to also give them formal and vocational training as their abilities permit for them to understand that there was ability in disability.

    Umeh tasks Flying Eagles, Falconets

Acting President of Nigeria Football Federation, Mike Umeh has called on players and officials of the U-20 national team, Flying Eagles, and the U-20 women national team, Falconets, to guard against complacency in their important international matches this weekend.

The U-20 boys host their counterparts from Lesotho in a 2015 African Youth Championship qualifying series final round, first leg encounter at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium on Saturday, while the girls lock horns with New Zealand in the quarter finals of the 7th FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup  in Canada.

“It is important that our U-20 boys and girls approach their different matches with utmost seriousness. I mean that they should banish the temptation to under –rate their opponents,” Umeh, himself a one –time team manager of the senior national team, said in Abuja on Thursday.

Lesotho has a far smaller name in African football than Nigeria and there will definitely be the temptation to under rate the visitors.

“But football is no longer that way and any so-called big team that takes the opposition for granted could leave itself open for a sucker punch.”

The delegation of the Junior Crocodiles is scheduled to arrive in Abuja on Friday(Today), before heading to Kaduna. It would be recalled that Lesotho defeated better –fancied Angola home and away in the previous round of the qualifying series.

However, the Flying Eagles, loaded with record fourth FIFA U-17 World Cup winners in United Arab Emirates last year, also dismissed Tanzania home and away in the previous round.

Umeh also told the U-20 girls, Falconets, not to look down on their quarter final opponents, New Zealand.

“It is true that our girls have been improving steadily with each match and I am happy about that. But they should not under –estimate the New Zealand girls, who defeated Paraguay and won handsomely against Costa Rica to reach this stage.”

Nigeria’s Falconets drew 1-1 with Mexico in their first match but won 2-1 against Korea Republic and England, arguably playing better each time. Sunday’s clash at the Moncton Stadium in Moncton is only the second –ever meeting between Nigeria and New Zealand at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.  On November 19, 2008 in Coquimbo, Chile, goals by Sarah Michael, Ogonna Chukwudi and Rita Chikwelu steered the Falconets to a 3-2 win over the New Zealanders in a group phase match.

Victory in Saturday’s match will stand the Flying Eagles in good stead for a spot at the 2015 African Youth Championship, while victory over New Zealand on Sunday will earn the Falconets their third successive semi final berth at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup finals.
