Eno, Akpabio: Enoidem’s entry signifies peace, unity, growth

Following the call by Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, to advance his administration’s ARISE Agenda and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state has recorded a political realignment with the reception of Emmanuel Enoidem (SAN), former national legal adviser of Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) into the party.

Present to receive Enoidem at Etim Ekpo Stadium, Utu Etim Ekpo, were the governor, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, top government officials, party faithful, political leaders, and supporters.

Eno thanked Enoidem for the ‘‘courageous and enlightened decision’’ in the interest of the state. The governor noted Enoidem’s role in his political journey, particularly his election as governor in 2023, and hoped the move would further strengthen peace and unity in the state.

The governor noted that his administration had executed about 25 projects in Etim Ekpo coincil, adding with leaders like Enoidem, Senator Akpabio, and otherrs, Etim Ekpo would continue to witness accelerated development.

Akpabio described the occasion as a personal reconnection with one of his political mentees. He said Enoidem’s entry into APC would usher in peace in Etim Ekpo, Abak Federal Constituency, and Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District, signalling an end to opposition politics in the area. Akpabio added that the development would make governance easier and more effective.

Earlier, council chair lauded Eno for his leadership and thanked Akpabio for being a beacon of hope to people. He lauded the governor’s development initiatives and praised Enoidem’s decision.

Speakers described the ceremony as a testament to the purposeful and unifying leadership of Eno and Akpabio.

They lauded Enoidem for joining APC in advancing the Renewed Hope Initiative of the Federal Government and ARISE Agenda of government. Highpoint of the ceremony was the induction of Enoidem,, his wife, and thousands of supporters into APC—a process conducted by the state party Chairman, Stephen Ntukekpo.

Enoidem said the occasion is historic, saying while the decision was not easy, it was taken in the best interest of the state. Emphasising that politics is local, he said his move was driven by his love for Etim Ekpo and his desire for progress. The event was attended by Deputy Governor, Akon Eyakenyi; lawmakers, etc.

…announces purchase of CNG 50 buses

Akwa Ibom state governor Umo Eno has flagged off the construction of Ibom CNG Mass Transit Terminal at Ikot Ekpe Offot, Uyo.

Eno also announced that his administration has ordered 50 CNG buses with payment routed through the Central Bank of Nigeria(CNG).

He said that the buses expected to arrive from April this year would be distributed to the 31 local government areas of the state.

The governor, who performed the flag-off ceremony at the terminal premises, added that his administration plans to provide a world class transport facility to ease movement within the State, improve the State’s economy and boost tourism.

He underscored his determination to link all the 31 local government Areas of the State to Uyo, the capital city, and boost the economy and tourism potentials of the State.

He said, “I thank the Honourable Commissioner for Transport for the work they have done here. Some of you remember when we first visited this site, it was not a good sight. Like the Commissioner has said, it was abandoned and became a living abode for touts and criminals. But today, it has been well cleared and prepared to receive a world class bus terminal.

“From here our people are going to be driven through our very well paved and constructed roads to the 31 local government areas.

“All the 50 CNG buses have already been ordered and paid for through the Central Bank of Nigeria; and they will start arriving in April this year.

“These are luxurious CNG buses that would be deployed to service all Local Government Areas through and fro” he said.

Eno also commended the Minister of Petroleum – Gas, Obongemem Ekperikpe Ekpo for his collaboration and support for the vision as the project will incorporate gas stations, training schools for technicians, and engage about 500 drivers.

“We are trying to bring down the cost of living for all Akwa Ibomites. If transportation is brought down, everything comes down and the economy will be stable.

“We want to make sure that our people travel with ease. We will work with the mass transit people, we will work with the transport sector to realize this dream.

“This is not just a bus terminal like the Commissioner for Transport has said. Other facilities will be here to make it comfortable. The management will be topnotch.

“We are working on our transportation system in this state, whether it is marine transportation or aviation. We are building a marine terminal in Oron, and work is at its advance stage. We are building a warehouse there too, we have ordered two marine boats, one is done by the Nigerian Navy, and another by a company in Lagos,” he said.

Ekpo commended Governor Eno for his pragmatic leadership, describing him as a man of peace and vision who understands the needs of his people.

He noted that the project was a clear interpretation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope vision to ameliorate the effect of subsidy removal.

Akpabio, Eno receive ex-PDP National Legal Adviser into APC

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Akwa Ibom Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, have formally received the former National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Emmanuel Enoidem into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

At a rally in Utu Etim Ekpo, Etim Ekpo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio likened the defection of Enoidem who had served as a Commissioner in his administration as Governor to the Biblical story of a Shepherd who left 99 sheep to go in search of one which had gone astray.

Akpabio commended Eno for reuniting Enoidem with him and said the move would ensure a rancor free electioneering not only in Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District but Akwa Ibom State as a whole. He said with the defection of the former PDP chieftain, APC would coast home to victory easily in the 2027 elections.

A statement by the Special Assistant on Media and Communication to the President of the Senate, Anietie Ekong, quoted Senator Akpabio as saying: “This rally is like connecting me to one of my political mentees. I want to tell everyone that I am happy to receive Enoidem into the APC.

“Today’s event signals the return of peace to Akwa Ibom State. And you know that peace drives  progress and development in any community.

“I must put on record for the people of Etim Ekpo that despite the fact that Enoidem contested against me in 2023, you voted overwhelmingly for me. So now that he is back with us, we anticipate rancour free elections in 2027,” Akpabio said.

Through a voice vote administered by Senator Akpabio, the people indicated their intention to support the reelection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senator Akpabio and Governor Eno.

On his part, Governor Eno acknowledged that Enoidem had played a key role in his emergence as Governor of Akwa Ibom State and appreciated him for hearkening to the voice of reason and joining the APC in the overall interest of the State.

Eno disclosed that even while he was in PDP, Enoidem had assured him of his support for his reelection and that of Senator Akpabio but he had reasoned that it would serve the interest of the State better if he joined the APC.

The former PDP chieftain, Enoidem said he was defecting from the PDP to join the APC in the interest of Akwa Ibom State since all politics are local and majority of the people have indicated their preference for the ruling party instead of being in the opposition.

The event was attended by political stakeholders, including members of the National Assembly, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) Obongemem Ekperikpe Ekpo, State House of Assembly members, State Executive Council members, local government chairmen, party leaders, traditional and religious leaders, among others.

The State Chairman of APC, Obong Steven Ntokekpo presented party symbols and paraphernalia to the new entrant.

  • How international status for Akwa Ibom Airport signals economic take-off

How international status for Akwa Ibom Airport signals economic take-off

    By Ibas Emmanuel

When Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno stepped off his flight at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, on Thursday, the moment carried more than the routine ease of arrival. It marked the dawn of a long-anticipated economic turning point for the oil-rich but increasingly diversified state. Only hours earlier, the Federal Government had granted the airport full international status, setting the stage for Akwa Ibom to connect directly with the global aviation, trade and tourism ecosystem.

For Governor Eno, the approval represents years of quiet advocacy, strategic alignment and patient negotiation coming to fruition. Speaking with journalists at the airport, he did not conceal his satisfaction, even as he maintained the measured tone that has become his leadership signature. “For this region, trade will be enhanced. Tourism will be boosted. Jobs will be created,” he said. “Flights will land directly here. There will be a whole lot of economic activities for the good of our people and our state.”

Originally inaugurated in 2009, the Victor Attah International Airport has for more than a decade served as Akwa Ibom’s primary air gateway. Despite its impressive runway, modern terminal design and strategic location in Uyo, the airport largely operated domestic routes, connecting the state to Lagos, Abuja and a handful of other Nigerian cities.

The limitation, according to analysts, was never infrastructure alone, but status. Without international clearance, the airport could not receive or process foreign carriers or operate cross-border flights. That bottleneck is now decisively removed.

On November 27, 2025, the Federal Government officially approved the airport for full international flight operations, authorising it to serve as a direct gateway linking Akwa Ibom to destinations outside Nigeria. The approval followed a high-level meeting between Governor Eno and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, underscoring the importance of federal-state collaboration in unlocking major infrastructure milestones.

The implications of the upgrade are significant. International airports are not merely transit points; they are catalysts for commerce. For a state positioning itself beyond oil dependency, direct global access translates into easier export of goods, import of technology, and smoother movement of investors.

Akwa Ibom’s comparative advantages are well-known: fertile agricultural belt, expanding manufacturing base, a peaceful social climate, and a growing hospitality and leisure sector. Until now, however, investors and tourists often had to route through Lagos or Port Harcourt before making the final domestic hop to Uyo. That inconvenience, Governor Eno noted, is about to end.

“With this region, trade will be enhanced and tourism will be boosted,” he said, emphasising that international flights will land directly in Uyo, stimulating a web of economic activities ranging from logistics and hospitality to retail and professional services.

Tourism, in particular, stands to gain. Akwa Ibom’s beaches, cuisine, festivals and emerging leisure resorts are already gaining national attention. Direct international access could place the state firmly on the West African tourism map, attracting visitors from the diaspora and beyond who seek convenience, security and cultural depth.

One clear beneficiary of the new status is Ibom Air, the state-owned carrier that has steadily built a reputation for reliability and service quality within Nigeria. Governor Eno noted that the airline is “favourably positioned” to expand its operations and partner with international carriers now that the airport enjoys full global clearance.

“Our airline stands favourably to expand its operations and partner with other international airlines to choose here as part of their business routes in Nigeria,” the governor said, framing the development as the culmination of deliberate efforts to build an aviation ecosystem rather than a single infrastructure win.

For Ibom Air, international status means opportunities for code-sharing, regional routes across Africa, and potentially long-haul connections that would place Akwa Ibom on international flight schedules. Beyond commercial benefits, such expansion promises job creation for pilots, engineers, cabin crew, ground staff and allied service providers.

Governor Eno’s comment that he prefers “working behind the scenes to achieve results” offers insight into how the approval was secured. Unlike high-profile political campaigns, aviation certification requires technical compliance, regulatory engagement and sustained federal cooperation.

“You know how long we have been pursuing this status for our airport,” he admitted, reflecting on what many observers describe as years of incremental progress. For Eno, alignment with the centre became a strategic necessity rather than a political slogan.

The international airport approval, he explained, reinforces why Akwa Ibom needed to collaborate closely with the Federal Government to unlock development opportunities of national scale. Such alignment, analysts say, reduces bureaucratic friction and accelerates approvals in sectors that remain federally regulated.

Beyond aircraft landings and take-offs, the most tangible impact of the airport upgrade will be felt on the ground. International operations demand expanded customs, immigration, cargo handling, security, hospitality and transport services. Each layer generates employment and skills transfer.

Local businesses like: hotels, car hire services, logistics firms, restaurants, tour operators, stand to benefit from increased traffic. For young people, particularly those trained in aviation-related disciplines, the internationalisation of the airport signals new career pathways closer to home.

Governor Eno underscored this point when he spoke of jobs and economic activities multiplying across the state. For a government focused on inclusive growth, the airport’s new status fits neatly into broader plans to diversify revenue streams and reduce unemployment.

While the approval is already official, full international flight operations are expected to commence no later than the first quarter of 2026. That timeline, according to aviation experts, allows for final certification steps, airline scheduling, personnel training and operational testing.

For Akwa Ibom, the months ahead will be critical. Infrastructure upgrades, service readiness and global marketing will determine how quickly the state converts status into sustained traffic. But confidence remains high, driven by the airport’s existing facilities and the administration’s stated commitment to results over rhetoric.

As Governor Eno summed it up, “By the grace of God, all of this is coming together for our good.” In that statement lies both gratitude and quiet determination. With the Victor Attah International Airport now a recognised global gateway, Akwa Ibom stands poised at the threshold of a new economic chapter, one where trade, tourism and talent can flow freely between the state and the world.

Eno orders immediate repairs of internal roads in Uyo

Akwa Ibom state governor Umo Eno has ordered the immediate repairs of failed portions of internal roads in Uyo and other major towns in the state.

According to a release by the Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, the governor intends to ensure improved infrastructure and seamless mobility for citizens and residents across the state.

Umanah said the government is aware of potholes that have affected some roads due to heavy rainfall and storm water in recent weeks.

He assured the public that as the rains subside, rehabilitation work will begin in earnest to ensure proper and durable reconstruction of the affected portions.

“The governor has directed that the Ministry of Works should carry out a comprehensive assessment to determine the extent of potholes in Uyo, preparatory to full-scale maintenance and overlay work.”

He noted that the Umo Eno administration, in line with the Infrastructure Development thrust of the ARISE Agenda, remains fully committed to ensuring the maintenance and sustainability of public infrastructure.

He emphasised that beyond the construction of over 964 kilometers of new and inherited roads, bridges currently ongoing across the state, the state government is also focused on routine maintenance and rehabilitation of existing roads to enhance mobility, safety, and the overall urban outlook.

The Commissioner further disclosed that desilting of drainages and clearing of blocked water channels are ongoing in various parts of Uyo to reduce flooding and prevent further damage to road infrastructure.

He appealed to residents and motorists to exercise patience and understanding, assuring that the state government will continue to respond promptly and responsibly to infrastructure needs across the state.

    Governor Eno scores for albinos

Governor Umo Eno did something that touched my heart and that of anyone who understands the power of connection and humility.

He devoted an occasion to associate with albinos.

He gave them donations, and used his platform as the state’s first citizen to evangelise empathy.

The governor told his audience how he was mocked as a child because of his looks, and when he was running for governor, some insensitive souls balked at the prospect of an albino governor.

The Bible says, call not a person common that God supports, and that is the eternal testimony of the chief executive of Akwa Ibom State.

He tickled the audience when he said his wife responded to the mockers by calling him “my golden boy.”

He did not only give them gifts, he embraced the boys and girls, as well as the grownups. They will never forget the moment. They know that albinism is no handicap. The last time a governor exemplified this public trait was when former Nasarawa governor Tanko Al-Makura joined a parade of handicapped persons in Abuja.

A’Ibom govt wades Into Ibeno–Eket communal crisis

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has moved to address the decade-long ownership dispute over Stubb Creek along the Atlantic coastline in Ibeno Local Government Area of the State.

The age-long crisis had fueled repeated deadly clashes between Ibeno, Eket, and Esit Eket communities with reported scores of death and destruction of properties.

Governor Umo Eno, during a town hall meeting for Eket Federal Constituency on August 2, announced the setting up of a peace committee to resolve the lingering boundary conflict.

The committee, to be chaired by the Governor, will have two nominees each from Ibeno, Eket, and Esit Eket LGAs, with calls for Mbo LGA to also be represented due to its shared boundary with Stubb Creek.

The decision by the Governor to resolve the Ibeno – Esit Eket crises has drawn commendations from Ibeno leaders, who say it is long overdue.

Speaking after an emergency general meeting in Upenekang, the spokesperson for Akwaha Esop Ndito Ibeno Worldwide, Chief UmanIbono Ekaluo, lauded the government’s intervention, urging the committee to be impartial and thorough in examining historical records, treaties, and royalty payments connected to Stubb Creek.

Chief Ekaluo detailed a timeline of violent invasions allegedly carried out by armed attackers from Eket and Esit Eket, leading to the loss of lives, destruction of property worth billions of Naira, and displacement of residents.

Notable incidents include; the February 28, 2024; attack on Iwuoachang community where seven people were killed; the November 8, 2024, invasion of Inua Eyet Ikot; the December 24, 2024, attack on Ndito Eka Iba; and two more assaults on Inua Eyet Ikot this year; the latest on August 1, 2025.

He lamented that despite the magnitude of destruction, humanitarian relief has been absent, and state development projects in Ibeno remain a near zero.

“We have endured these unprovoked attacks not out of cowardice but to avoid escalating violence that could scare away oil and gas investors,” Ekaluo stated, warning that, the aggressors’ aim is to destabilize the area and cripple its economic potential.

Ibeno hosts several oil and gas facilities critical to the national economy, and local leaders feared that continued violence could deter investment.

They have called on the state government to speed up the formation and inauguration of the committee, saying any delay risks further loss of lives and livelihoods.

Eno explained that his political foundation was rooted in the All Progressives Congress (APC), adding that it was impossible for him to stand apart from President Tinubu.

He said Tinubu had demonstrated rare leadership, noting that critics of his administration were people who had previously mismanaged opportunities to govern the nation.

The governor announced a donation of N10 million as seed money for the Welfare Intervention Scheme earlier proposed by the VHS 1981 Set leadership.

He thanked the group for supporting him in difficult moments, adding that their solidarity had consistently inspired him.

The VHS 1981 Set conferred on him the title of Grand Patron and presented an Award of Excellent Service for contributions to alumni growth and human development.
