FMC, Umuahia, American University sign MoU on kidney transplant

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between The Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, and the Toledo University, Ohio, U.S. for kidney transplant service

This disclosure was made by the Medical Director, Dr Abali Chuku, on Thursday in an interview with journalists in Umuahia,  saying  that the services would kick-off in February 2017.

He recalled that discussion for the partnership began in 2015 when he was inducted into the Medical Mission Hall of Fame by the university.

Chuku said that the university would train eight medical personnel, comprising three doctors and two nurses in the first phase, while three others would be trained later.

The medical director said that the centre was also collaborating with the National Association of Nigerian Nurses in North America for the training of its nurses.

He, however, identified adequate funding as the major challenge facing the centre in carrying out its activities, especially its training programme.

Chuku also said that the hospital was grossly understaffed and thus, performing below capacity.

He said that the centre needed 236 additional nurses and required more consultants to be able to provide more efficient services to patients.
Chuku, therefore, appealed to the Federal Government for N500 million take off for the centre to put it centre on a solid financial footing optimum performance.

Abia crisis: state will emerge better under Ogah – group

A group that calls itself Isi-Ogoasaa Consultative Forum, from Acha in Isuikwuato local government of Abia state has expressed optimism that state would be a better and economically viable one when Dr Uche Ogah assumed the leadership of the state.

Speaking with newsmen in Umuahia, the leader of the forum , Chief Chikwendu Ibebuike Onwuegbu, said that since the electoral body had obey the directive of the Abuja Federal High Court presided over by Justice Okon Abang that the next thing to be done is to swear in Ogah without any further delay.

Onwuegbu said that the delay in the swearing in of Ogah as the authentic governor of Abia state amounts to flouting the directive of a court of competent jurisdiction, which is not in line with the change mantra of the present administration.

He said, “Since Dr. Ogah has been issued with certificate of return by the Independent National Electoral commission [INEC] the next action will be to swear him in as the Abia governor as declared by the Federal High Court which sat in Abuja in its ruling of 27th June 2016, presided over by Justice Okon Abang”.

The leader of the forum said that despite the fact that, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has exercised his legal right of appeal, “That appeal ought not to substitute the swearing in of Dr Ogah as the legitimate governor of Abia state as declared by Justice Abang”.

Onwuegbu explained that, “Abia Charter of Equity as stipulated and enunciated by the founding fathers of Abia, has a pact that the various districts which were joined to create Abia in 1991 will take turns to govern the state which has been followed to the letter until now”.

“The name Abia was derived from the four [4] letter acronym A-B-I-A representing the four [4] districts that were joined to create Abia, Afikpo District which stands for letter ‘A’  has taken their turn by Dr Ogbonnaya  Onu [1992-1993].

“Bende District which stands for letter ‘B’  has also taken its turn by Dr Orji Uzor Kalu [1999-2007] and Chief T.A Orji [2007-2015] respectively, it is now the turn of the third letter ‘I’ which represents Isuikwuato District where Dr Ogah comes from  to produce the next governor”.

“It is a simple logic that after Isuikwuato must have governed the next letter which is ‘A’ which represents Aba District, where Governor Okezie Ikpeazu comes from will produce after Isuikwuato district, so that the ethos of the charter of equity will be achieved to the letter”.

He continued by saying, “That going by the pact of the  founding fathers of Abia as enshrined in the Abia Charter of Equity , Dr. Ogah is still on the right course which is the reason we are supporting him to be sworn-in as the authentic governor of the state“.

On the issue of allegation that the certificate of returns given to Dr Uchechukwu Ogah by INEC is not valid, Onwuegbu said that, “Those dwelling on such fantasy should rather purse the substance than the shadow which they are doing to their own detriment”.

He said, “The media team of Ikpeazu should allow the legal team to do their work and stop trying to deceive the people, as INEC remains the competent authority to issue certificate of return and the commission is always conscious of its statutory obligations”.

“Since this political imbroglio broke out and they [Ikpeazu’s media team] came out that the certificate of return issued to Ogah is fake the big question is, has INEC come out to say that the certificate they issued to Ogah is fake, let’s face facts please”.

    • Olorundare’s 90th min strike stuns Abia Warriors
    • Warri Wolves thrash El Kanemi 3-1

Sunshine Stars have secured their first away win of the season after they defeated Abia Warriors 2-1 at the Umuahia Township Stadium to inflict the hosts first home loss of the season in a NPFL Match Day 19 tie yesterday.

The Umuahia side failed to clear their line properly in the dying moments of the first half and this allowed Akure Gunners‘ striker, Rasaq Adegbite to fire home the curtain raiser of the match but Abia Warriors found the leveller through Obinna Eric Nwaimo in the 78th minute.

When the hosts had thought they would at least leave the pitch with a share of the spoil, Sunshine’s Dele Olorundare struck in the 90th minute to hit the final blow on the Kennedy Boboye led Abia Warriors.

The Owena Waves moved to 27 points from 19 games while Abia Warriors are on 30 points from 18 matches.

In Warri, it took three second half goals to deny El Kanemi Warriors against Warri Wolves whose the brace of Kelvin Itoya-the adjudged man of the match fetched them important three points against the Borno Armies.

Itoya, a second half substitute, opened the scores in the 77th minute before adding the second five minutes later through a thumping header.

Sikiru Alimi grabbed the third in the 88th minute as the Seasiders moved to 28 points from 18 matches. There was still time for El Kanemi Warriors to pull a goal back in the dying minutes of the match.

  • Environment agency cleans up Umuahia

    Environment agency cleans up Umuahia

Mountains of refuse are giving way in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, thanks to the state Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA).

The agency has come to life after months of inactivity, a situation which left the capital city with heaps of refuse and not a little stench in many places.

The agency has been complaining of having rickety vehicles in its fleet to evacuate refuse which in most cases are in the process of breaking down especially when their services are needed most.

To solve the problem, the Okezie Ikpeazu administration purchased several new refuse disposal trucks which are awaiting delivery to the environment agency.

Worried by the heaps of waste on the streets and roads, the general manager of ASEPA, Prince Ikechukwu Apugo set up a task force to oversee the evacuation of the unsightly mountains in the state.

Apugo with his ASEPA team launched the task force on sanitation in major streets of the state capital where the members of the task force were seen dismantling the refuse mountains to the joy and admiration of the residents of Umuahia.

The task force which went into work was seen clearing heaps of refuse along Warri and Owerri roads in Umuahia, including dislodging of illegal traders and transporters who have turned the two roads into illegal motor parks.

Speaking with newsmen during the launch of the refuse disposal task force, the general manager of ASEPA, Apugo said that the era when people dump refuse indiscriminately and littering the streets with sachet water packs is over.

Represented by the deputy director of information in the agency, Mrs Chioma Daphine, Apugo said that the task force is empowered to arrest those who have formed the ugly habit of littering the streets, including those who throw refuse from their vehicles.

Apugo announced that a mobile court has been formed for the immediate trial of any one found littering the streets of the state capital, including setting fire on the receptacle buckets.

He said that the law prohibiting under aged children from dumping refuse in the ASEPA bins is still in place, stressing that the children who are underage find it difficult to dump refuse into the bins because of their height, leaving it on the road instead.

The ASEPA boss frowned at the continued trading along major roads in the city despite the relocation of the city main market to Ubani-Ibeku which is on the outskirts of the capital city.

He assured that the task force with the compliments of his office will ensure that the state government aim of restoring sanity and environmental cleanliness of Umuahia is achieved with the shortest period.

In his speech, the leader of the sanitation taskforce Nduka Awomukwu assured that the team will not compromise standards in achieving its mandate and called on the residents to give them maximum support to achieve results.

  • Umuahia Stadium to be reconstructed

The Abia State Government has awarded contract for the reconstruction of the Umuahia Township Stadium in readiness for the kick-off of the 2015/16 Premier League season.

Chairman of Abia Warriors Football Club of Umuahia, Chief Emeka Inyama disclosed this at the club’s secretariat during an end-of-year get-together organized by the management and board for staff, supporters club and well wishers.

He disclosed that MONIMICHELLE Sports Facility Construction Limited will handle the reconstruction project, assuring that work will be completed before the beginning of the season.

The chairman also announced that the State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu will soon perform the ground-breaking ceremony of the club’s 40-hectare sports complex situated in Umuahia.

According to him the first phase of the project will begin next month and will include the construction of an ultra modern office complex, a 40-room hostel for the players and two practicing pitches while the second phase will witness the construction of a multi-purpose hall, a three-star hotel, an ultra-modern housing estate and a swimming pool which will generate money for the club.

He said most of the job will be carried out in partnership with the private sector, pointing out that talks have also reached an advanced stage with a Chinese firm in this regard.

The chairman disclosed that when finalized, the deal will run into millions of naira and save the government the inconveniences of sponsoring such huge projects.

He commended the state Governor for having the interest to carry the burden of sponsoring two Premier League sides and a National League club despite all odds disclosing that Abia Warriors remain the only side without money issues with either management, staff or players as the club has paid salary up to December, 2015 and is not owing any match allowance or bonuses.

Inyama said the club will continue to be run professionally in order to set the pace and urged the technical crew led by Kennedy Boboye to do its best to win the league or at least grab a continental ticket at the end of the season.

    Pro-Biafra protests shut Umuahia

The pro-Biafra protest train arrived Umuahia, the Abia State capital yesterday, moving through major streets under the watch of security agents.

The pro-Biafra demonstrators were fulfilling their vow to take the protest to all states of the Southeast before heading to Abuja, if the leader of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) and Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, was not released.

Alhough economic activities were not disrupted, about 500 protesters marched through Isi Court in Umuahia South, Aba and Umuwaya roads as well as Bende and Enugu Roads peacefully.

They were accompanied by security agencies, apparently to forestall a breakdown of law and order.

Roads leading to the Government House was blocked with police vans.

The protesters, who carried Kanu’s portrait and the Biafran flag, chanted songs of freedom and asked the Federal Government to order Kanu’s release.

Before the protesters arrived, security agencies including the police, Army and civil defence, mounted surveillance in strategic locations including the Government House.

Police spokesman Ezekiel Udeviotu said the protest was peaceful and there were no arrests as the police applied international best practices of the rule engagement.

  • Umuahia and its war museum

    Umuahia and its war museum

Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, is a city that has been part of history. In the area of commerce, it is a strategic town for trading and movement of goods to different parts of the country, most especially through the railway.

Umuahia was also the second capital of Biafra after the fall of Enugu. Relics of this period are the biggest tourist attractions in the city. They are the War Museum and Ojukwu Bunker. .

The museum was aimed at putting the ugly episode of the war behind and speeding up the process of national reconciliation and healing.

While the civil war lasted, various sophisticated weapons were used. Some of these deadly weapons were fabricated due the exigencies of the war. Outside the appurtenances of war, civilians were also involved in the process of not just fighting, but psyching up the minds of the people to forge ahead despite the deprivations that came with war. Different media of mass communication were used.

The war was a watershed in the history of Nigeria as a country. The experience, many agree, is such that makes the resort to arms and war as a means of conflict resolution not an attractive option. It is in this spirit that the Nigerian War Museum, Umuahia was established.

The museum’s location was chosen because it was where the bunker housing the famous shortwave radio “the Voice of Biafra”was transmitted from. Voice of Biafra was the mouth-piece for Biafra during the war.

The National War Museum has the highest collection of the Nigerian civil war weapons that are no longer in used. The weapons are from both the Nigerian military and the defunct Republic of Biafra .

The place has become a tourist site that attracts hundreds of people daily. They come from within and outside the country to see the war artifacts on display. To some, it is to relive the period of the war through items on display, while to others, it is for study purposes. There are yet others who come simply for curiosity.

The museum is located at Ebite Amafor in Isingwu Autonomous Community in the Umuahia North Local Government Area. It is off Umuahia-Uzuakoli Road. The war museum is very popular, so locating it would pose no problem as any cab or the commercial tricyclist could take one to the museum. There are no longer commercial motorcyclists in Umuahia.

The museum was commissioned in 1985 on a large expanse of land. It has three galleries that cover traditional warfare, the armed forces and the Nigerian Civil War weapon galleries. War relics housed in the museum include weapons used during the pre-colonial civil disturbances, warfare materials used during communal and inter-tribal wars and those of the Nigerian Civil War.

After paying the entrance fee, a tour of the museum kicks off from the prehistoric war section where some of the weapons that were used for war are on display. On display are spears, shields, bows and arrows. Metal war vests that warriors used to protect themselves are also on display.

The end of the old war weapons section leads to the Nigerian Armed Forces gallery. There are the ceremonial uniforms of the army officers. Pictures of some past military leaders are also on display. For those unfamiliar with the military insignia that differentiates the ranks in the military, this gallery offers tutorials.

From this section, one then walks to the gate of the bunker that houses the Radio Biafra of the defunct Biafran Republic. Just at the entrance is  the Biafran flag: red, black and green with the rising sun in the middle. There are also black and white pictures of the Nigerian leaders that were victims of the war, starting with the January 15, 1966 coup of Kaduna Nzeogwu.

The bunker is about 30 feet deep and on both sides of the step as one walks down are pictures of protagonists of the war from both Nigerian and Biafran sides of the divide.

Inside the bunker are the transmission studio and the huge transmitter of Radio Biafra. The bunker was a perfect decoy and very difficult for any enemy aircraft to locate without any prior information, especially with the undulating hills in the area.

The bunker has two stairways for entrance and exit. The tour of this section of the museum is arranged in a way that the tourist would water through the main entrance to the bunker and exit through the back.

Scattered on the expansive premises of the war museum are different obsolete military weapons. Looking at them in their obsolete state, one wonders how many lives some of these weapons must have terminated. Was the course worth the lost? Has Nigeria learnt from this sad chapter in the nation building process? Has the huge cost of this war made the nation value the need for peace and dialogue as the best method of conflict resolution?

54-55 Tourism 07-03-2015.The army weapons on display include anti-aircraft guns and Squid Mortar MK4 anti-submarine gun said to be carried by the Navy warship N.N.S. Nigeria. According to the explanation by the side of the weapon, it is an ‘ahead throwing weapon that was used to destroy enemy sub-marine. It was mostly deployed for demolition of suspected mine fields along the channel for the safe passage of Nigerian Navy ships during the civil war’. Others are the Biafran red devil armoured personnel carrier; the famous Ogbunigwe (Ojukwu bucket) launcher; artillery gun 105mm Howitzer  said to have been used by the Italians during the Second World War in 1943 and that the particular weapon on display was used at the Aba/ Ikot Ekpene axis during the Civil War and NAF 102 Donier 27 aircraft. According to the history of he plane, it came from Luftwaffe Training Mission.

When The Nation visited the museum, some renovation activities to protect the artifacts were going on. One could also see, however, that the place not well funded. The indoor gallery was not well lit as there was no light. It was just a small electricity power generation set that was supplying light.

All said and done, for those who never experienced the Nigerian Civil War, they may not appreciate it to the full without visiting the National War Musuem, Umuahia. For those who did, they could relive the period by visiting the place.
