  • Understanding inequality

Sir: Access to political relevance and control of economic power are interwoven. The economic and political class by virtue of the role they play in campaign financing of office holders usually skew policy making and functioning of institutions in their favour. These few individuals who control economic and political power undermine policies that encourage inclusion by using the political and economic power to favour themselves and their cronies.

The negative effect of elite capture and cronyism in Nigeria which propagates inequality cuts across different sectors. Despite the billions of naira spent on the power sector, Nigerians cannot boast of a reliable supply of electricity. Elite capture and cronyism in the power sector gives rise to disregard for due process, over-scoping of projects, inflation of the costs, awarding of one contract two or more times, and the abandoning of power sector equipment at the ports. Some of the contractors that received funds for project implementation never mobilized equipment to site, not to talk of executing the projects. Despite all these infractions, nobody was severely punished due to elite capture and cronyism.

Elite capture of economic and political power in the interest of themselves and their cronies is also evident in the oil sector. Nigeria spends a huge amount of its scarce foreign exchange on importation of refined petroleum which can be done locally. A significant percentage of the money for the importation of refined petroleum ends up in private pockets. Few individuals have captured political and economic power and have done everything possible to ensure that our refineries remain in a state of perpetual disrepair. Fuel pricing and availability of fuel at the pumps of petrol stations is also under the control of these few individuals.

Capture of economic and political power by the elites and their cronies is also evident in the agricultural sector. Import quotas meant for farmers with high capacity are being diverted and issued to the cronies of people who are politically and economically powerful. These cronies will smile to the banks after making favourable deals with large companies and corporations who will in turn rip-off the Nigerian masses. Some government policies aimed at encouraging agricultural investments through backward integration of agricultural value chains has resulted in difficult production challenges for local farmers. Unfavourable agricultural sector policies also led to the closure of numerous vegetable oil mills when waivers were granted to special companies to import vegetable oil into Nigeria. These waivers created an unfair playing field for local manufacturers of vegetable oil who eventually closed shop.

  • Understanding our New Dawn Heritage in Redemption!

Understanding our New Dawn Heritage in Redemption!

Welcome to this great month of February! I pray that things that eyes have not seen, nor ears heard shall become the order of the day in our lives in Jesus name! Today, we shall focus on ‘Understanding our New Dawn Heritage in Redemption!’

We must recognise that understanding is important to accessing our heritage in the Kingdom. The truth is: It is one thing to read or hear but an entirely a different thing to see; but only those who see possess their inheritance in God. Therefore, we must set ourselves to see mysteries from God’s Word. Remember, until we have understanding of any scripture, the benefits are not released to us. Hence, it takes understanding to connect to the virtues in the Word. Once understanding comes alive, miracles are inevitable.

The Ethiopian Eunuch in Acts 8 was reading from Isaiah 53, but he did not understand what he was reading until Philip, moved by the Holy Ghost, asked him, Understandest thou what thou readest? Philip opened him up to the benefits of that scripture. And as soon as he understood what Philip was saying, he said: See, here is water, what doth hinder me to be baptized? It is important to understand that every truth of Scripture is valid for all times but applicable only to those who are interested. By redemption, we are members of the household of God; a new dawn family. When we are saved, old things are passed away, all things are become new. Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). That is, when we are baptised unto Jesus, you are empowered to live and walk in the newness of life.). Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God (Ephesians 2:19).

From scriptures, we discover that redemption changes our stories and ushers us into a completely new life. This implies that we are now members of the household of God which is a “New Dawn” Family (2 Corinthians 5:17; Ephesians 2:19).

But, what then is New Dawn?

According to scriptures, New Dawn connotes a life:

    • Where new things never cease happening  (Isaiah 42:7-9, 43:18-19; Malachi 3:6)
    • Where we continue to experience the strange works and strange acts of God as a way of life (John 3:8; Isaiah 28:21-22)
    • Where new doors continue to open to us (Isaiah 45:1-3; Revelation 3:7)
    • Where we continue to experience a change of story:
    • Where we go from strength to strength and from glory to glory (Psalm 73:1, 84:7; 2 Corinthians 3:18)
    • A life where things that eyes have not seen nor ears heard are the order of the day (1Corinthians 2:9-10)
    • Where we experience new things:
    • Year in year out (Psalm 65:11; Luke 13:6-9)
    • Month after month (Revelation 22:1; Isaiah 61:3)
    • Day in day out (Psalm 23:3, 68:19; Lamentations 3:22-23)
    • A family where every day is Christmas (Psalm 23:6, 33:18-19, 132:13-16)

In addition, we have a New Dawn root in God the Father, the God of new things, who said: Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing (Isaiah 43:18-19). Also, it is written: The former things have come to pass, new thing do I declare (Isaiah 42:8-9). Remember, God also said, I am the Lord, I Change not.  God is still doing new things in the lives of His people today (Malachi 3:6).  Moreover, we also have a New Dawn root in Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour, whose mission on earth was and is still characterised by new and strange things, as we saw people exclaimed concerning Him:

    • We never saw it on this fashion (Mark 2:12)
    • We have seen strange things to day! (Luke 5:26)
    • What manner of man is this? (Mark 8:27)

Remember, also that Jesus is the same, yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

Furthermore, we have a New Dawn root in the Apostles, who manifested strange works and strange acts in their ministries.

    • They unveiled mysteries that were hidden for ages (Ephesians 3:1-5/8-11)
    • Peter’s shadow healed the sick (Acts 5:15)
    • Paul and Barnabas were called ‘gods’ in the likeness of men (Acts 14:11)
    • They preached strange things and commanded strange results (Acts 17:16-21)

As we all know, the church is built on the foundation of Apostles and Prophets, so we have our foundation in strange works and strange acts (Ephesians 2:20).

Above all, we are in the last days which are the ‘New Dawn’ era of the Church of Christ on earth; the era of new and strange things (Joel 2:28-29; Zechariah 8:20-23). We understand from scriptures that the wave shall be so strange that it shall be spoken against by many people; but nothing shall be able to stop it (Joel 1:1-11; Acts 28:22; Isaiah 28:21-22).

However, new birth is the access of anyone to this “New Dawn” family (2 Corinthians 5:17; Romans 6:4).

Are you born again? If you are not, this is an opportunity to do so. Simply say the following prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Today, I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!” For further reading, please get my book: Exploring the Riches in Redemption. • Understanding why women fall out of love

Understanding why women fall out of love

WHEN it comes to relationships, there is nothing more magical or fulfilling than falling in love. It’s the ultimate in emotion, the prize, the best part of being with another person. It’s not surprising, then, that falling out of love is one of the most confusing feelings we can experience in life. Yet many women, for many reasons, find themselves in this unexpected place – feeling as if the magic of love has taken a nosedive. But evaluating the relationship midflight can be a tricky proposition. Before you decide if you are fully out of love, read on to see what matters can be changed.

The notion that the grass is greener is notorious for creeping into, and destroying, relationships. Just because you’ve settled into a comfort zone with your partner doesn’t mean there is excitement around the bend with someone else. The devil on your shoulder may tell you differently, and listening to that voice will pull you away from listening to your partner.

Communication is critical if a relationship is to grow, and it becomes even more important when there are bumps in the road.

Concerns that love may be diminishing will start small, with subtle changes in the way you think. The following are all indicators that you need to work on your relationship:

    * You no longer enjoy thinking about your partner throughout the day like you once did.

    * You don’t look forward to your time together.

    * You don’t share the same goals and plans for your future, and you avoid talking about them.

    * The little “things” are beginning to annoy you in a major way.

    * You no longer think of new ways to please him.

    * You are thinking of someone else.

    Evaluating your feelings

There may be valid reasons for the way you feel, especially if your partner is not giving you what you need. But before you throw in the towel, take a good look at where you’ve been together, and take some time to decide if the relationship is worth saving. Feeling as if you’re falling out of love may simply be a wake-up call that you need to catch each other and take the stairs – together –one by one.

Before your relationship turns from passionate to lukewarm, notice the warning signs that trouble may be ahead. Has sex become a distant memory for you and your partner? Is there only an occasional physical reminder of the passion you used to share? Sex is an important part of any relationship, so if your sex life has diminished, there is likely some underlying emotional reason for it.

Communication issues and unrealistic expectations are two of the main reasons people find themselves falling out of love. But there are things that can be done to stop the fall. Relationships are hard work; they should be viewed as investments, particularly if there is a marriage.

Take stock of your feelings, and do it often. Ask about his feelings, and do it regularly. Growing apart can happen quickly and unexpectedly, particularly if your lives involve changes in kids, work, hobbies, goals, and values. In marriage, falling out of love can have particularly devastating consequences.

It may be more difficult for women to come to terms with, or even admit, that they are having problems maintaining the feelings of love for their spouses. They have to make a decision to dissolve or save the marriage while battling conflicting emotions.

Men seem to be getting all the attention when it comes to relationship muck-ups and falling out of love. Bestselling book, Why Men Fall out of Love(2005), by Michael French, was a big hit with readers, but no such book has been written about women. Women, meanwhile, often think they are the “fixers” of the relationship, and tend to seek out information to remedy the problem. They may perceive men to be indifferent and construe their lack of communication as cruel. As the women feel more neglected, the slow process of falling out of love begins. Neglect isn’t as concrete as infidelity or physical abuse, so it is a tougher area to discuss directly.

See your partner for who he is. If he treats you poorly now, he will later. If he has a bad habit of putting you down in front of his friends, see it as a red flag. These actions may not make you feel like falling out of love now, but soon enough they will wear on you.

    Looking at the Numbers

Many marriage counselors advise waiting until after the age of 25 to tie the knot; others say waiting until at least 30 is best. Of course, the level of maturity is certainly more important than the calendar years, but give these numbers a little thought.

Are you on the rebound? If so, beware of getting involved with a new partner too quickly. Regardless how right or perfect he seems, your heart needs time to mend, and your brain needs time to make rational decisions. Rebound romances tend to be hot and heavy at first, but you could find yourself in a sticky situation if things get out of hand. If the relationship is strong and worthy of going the long haul, a little caution is necessary. The same goes if he is the one nursing a broken heart.

This leads to the topic of second marriages. Despite the notion that you learn from your mistakes and won’t make them again, second marriages are not always the lucky charm. The added pressures of stepchildren and ex-spouses is one of the major stressors on relationships. Those who enter a relationship where children already exist face an even greater potential for problems down the road. Setting ground rules right away is necessary for the relationship to grow and succeed. Without them, falling out of love is an unfortunate possibility.

4 Reasons We Fall in Love, Falsely

Some of the reasons why women fall out of love is because they never fell in love for the right reasons to start. Check this list and see if you are a culprit.

    1. The biological clock. That biological clock’s tick-tock may be driving you nuts, but you’re better off finding something to drown out the noise than give in to its chimes. With all of the technological advances we have seen in recent times, age is much less a factor today than it was a generation ago. If a family is part of your plan for the future, make yourself happy first. If that involves being in a healthy relationship, focus on making good choices; the rest will follow.
    2. Social acceptance. Don’t just date someone because having a boyfriend makes your mother happy. Figure out what makes you happy and go with it. Take a class, participate in a new activity or take a trip by yourself. Whether you are hoping to meet a man or a friend, there are many great ways that don’t involve bars.

A growing number of women are finding that being single is fun. In fact, the 2005 census shows that there were more single women, 51 percent, than married women.

    1. Sympathy. Who hasn’t dated a guy because he had those sad puppy-dog eyes and looked like his heart would break if you said no? The problem is that one date turns into another and the next thing you know, he has moved into your life, your apartment and your checkbook. Don’t play the martyr; it can lead to disaster.
    2. Sex. Come on ladies, this isn’t a reason to fall in love. If sexual intimacy is tops on your list of priorities, there may be other issues you need to work on first.

Many women fall in love for the wrong reasons. That doesn’t mean the love is any less passionate or meaningful; it just means women set themselves up for disaster by not paying close enough attention to the details. Wanting to fall in love is a normal, natural part of our social makeup. But if you are desperate to find love, for whatever reasons, you risk productive future relationships and your own happiness.

  • Osun APC hails residents for loyalty, understanding

Osun APC hails residents for loyalty, understanding

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has praised residents, including civil servants, for “their loyalty and understanding in the difficult period of massive economic recession that Nigeria has been living through since 2014”.

In a statement in Osogbo, the capital, by its Chairman, Gboyega Famodun, and Publicity Director, Kunle Oyatomi, the party said it was “proud of the people’s resilience and determination to forge ahead with progressive ideas, despite the difficulties that 2017 has presented”.

The statement added: “Regardless that the state is one of the least resourced in the Nigerian federation, it has demonstrated perhaps the most innovative capabilities in effecting the changes and developments necessary for economic growth in unprecedented circumstances.

“We have seen one of the most destructive opposition yet in Osun over the last seven years and the most evil campaign is in the making to lay to waste all that the Rauf Aregbesola-led APC government has done since 2010.

“But you, the people of Osun State, have seen it all: you have experienced the difference between light and darkness, evil and good, and you are in the best position to make a choice.

“In 2014, amid a vicious Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign, which drew blood and tears from the people, Osun stood firm behind the good, and they threw evil into the garbage heap.

“Yet, for the second time in four years, the good people of Osun will again be required to decide whether they will reject the evil as they did in 2014. That momentous year starts this January.

“In 2003, Osun made a terrible mistake of giving the PDP a chance. It was such horrible experience that in 2007, they had to vote that party out of office.  Their choice was violated until 2010, when justice was served.

“However, evil continued to fight to steal the soul of Osun State; despite all the then Federal might and force of violence, the people of Osun stood their grounds and the PDP was again rejected.

“This year, they will be pitching up a battle royale in the unlikely event of attempting to capture Osun and avenge 2007 and 2014. And like wounded lions, they will ravage the state by discontinuing every policy of the APC (God forbid) that had brought joy to the people of Osun.”

  • Understanding our redemptive rights to total health!

The Word of God is the principal Balm in Gilead for our total health and it is full of the prescriptions of the Great Physician. As it is written: He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions (Psalms 107:20). We also understand from scriptures that Jesus is the living Word: In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God (John1:1). The living Word is the only authentic source of answers to impossible questions concerning our health. This means whatever the Word prescribes is Jesus’ prescription for our healing.

Furthermore, we must understand that there are no scientific or medical solutions to satanic/spiritual oppressions. No scientific physician can deliver from spiritual oppression, no matter his expertise. For instance, the Bible records that the woman with the issue of blood had spent all her money on physicians for twelve years but was not healed because it was an oppression of the devil. However, when she encountered the healing virtue of Jesus, that oppression ceased and she was made whole immediately (Luke 8:43).

In Luke 13:11-13, we saw a woman plagued by the “spirit of infirmity”, which literarily means sickness, for 18 years. When Jesus said to her, “Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity,” she was made whole instantly. Furthermore, King Asa was plagued with a disease in his foot. It was a clear oppression but he sought solution from a wrong source. As a result, he died of that affliction (2 Chronicles 16:12-13).

It is important to know that Jesus, the Great Physician, is the only One who has authentic answers to the oppression of the devil in our lives; including the spirit of infirmity.  That is, there is no sickness or disease without an answer with Jesus. We either find solution from Jesus or keep searching for it forever. However, it is important to understand our right to total health because it will establish our stand when challenged, and fortify our confidence to be in command (Proverbs 24:5; Daniel 11:32). Nevertheless, it takes an in-depth knowledge of God’s provision on any issue, before we can be truly be confident to pursue same.

Therefore, let’s examine our redemptive rights to total health.

    • By redemption, we share eternal life with God which is immune to all sicknesses and diseases: At new birth, we were translated from the realm of human life to eternal life. ‘Eternal life’ means the God-kind of life or divine life. That makes us divinity in human flesh, which also connotes our dominion over life’s situations; including sicknesses and diseases which cannot be found in divinity. Therefore, whatever cannot survive in Jesus cannot operate in our bodies (Romans 6:23). Moreover, we are redeemed to be far from oppression, which includes sicknesses and diseases, because we are seated with Christ in heavenly places (Isaiah 54:14; Ephesians 1:21, 2:6).
    • By the Holy Ghost that dwells in us, we are spiritually empowered to enjoy divine health: Our right to total health in redemption is also established by the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, which quickens our mortal bodies to healthy living. As it is written: But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you (Romans 8:11). At new birth, our spirit-man came alive and began to fellowship with the Spirit of God, who we were equipped with in a measure. Remember, the Bible says that the Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God (Romans 8:16).

Furthermore, one of the principal prescriptions of the Great Physician is the mystery of the ‘Anointing Oil.’ Concerning Jesus, the Bible records: And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits… And they went out, and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them (Mark 6:7, 12-13). Jesus gave them the oil and called it power. That power has the capacity to heal our bodies of every sickness and disease. David was anointed with oil and the Spirit of the Lord came upon him. That means inside the oil dwells the presence of the Holy Spirit. When we take a shot of the oil, the Holy Ghost goes through our bodies, sweeps it clean and burns the chaff of sickness, and disease, thereby establishing our liberty from every torture of life (Matthew 3:11-12; 1 Samuel 16:13).

Let’s recognise that though God’s Word is the principal balm for our total health, it is putting the prescriptions of the Word to work that guarantees our healing. The prescriptions of God’s Word are not scriptures to quote but instructions to obey. This is because it is not the scriptures we quote that work but the one we apply. Remember that Jesus gave His disciples the oil and called it power. Yet, they had to put the power to use before healings erupted. This is why faith is not just believing God; rather, it is putting God’s Word to work to prove that we believe Him so He can make good His promise (James 2:18).

In conclusion, at new birth, our health issues were settled eternally; for if the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed (John 8:36). This makes new birth a vital requirement that qualifies us for wholeness. Are you born again? If you are not, this is an opportunity to do so. Simply say the following prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!”  For further reading, please get my books: Keys to Divine Health, The Healing Balm, The Miracle Meal and Fulfilling Your Days. • Ooni seeks understanding of African culture

The Ooni of Ile-Ife in Osun State, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi II, is expected to move into a seven-day seclusion soon to commune with his ancestors and pray for the nation ahead of the grand finale of Olojo Festival on September 30.

The frontline monarch called for a better understanding of African cultural beliefs.

Addressing reporters ahead of the festival, Oba Ogunwusi called for the repackaging of African culture to remove the negative tag on the beliefs of the Black race.

The monarch noted that contrary to the view of many people within and outside the continent, deities and forbears of Africans were servants of God.

According to him, the deities are doing well in delivering the mandate given to them by God.

On the significance of the festival, the foremost Yoruba monarch said the Olojo is the celebration of the first dusk and dawn.

Oba Ogunwusi said during the festival, the Ooni wears Are crown and takes a walk to Oke Mogun where the first dusk and dawn occurred.

Describing the Olojo as a global festival, Oba Ogunwusi called for proper education of the younger generation on the significance of major cultural celebrations of the Yoruba.

Oba Ogunwusi said: “Some members of the Black Caucus of Pennsylvania House of Representatives and about 150 other African-Americans have already indicated interest to participate in this year’s Olojo Festival.”

He also called for a repackage of African culture and proper education of the younger generation on the significance of major cultural celebrations of the Yoruba.

Highlights of this year’s festival include reorientation workshop for youths on culture, a football competition, ayo olopon, a fashion show and traditional music night.

  • Expert to Labour: show understanding to investors

The Chairman of Obijackson Group, indigenous oil and gas conglomerate, Dr. Ernest Azudialu, has advised labour organisations in Nigeria to show understanding to firms’ owners in theri dealings.

He spoke at an interaction session with reporters in Lagos when the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Lagos branch, planned to picket the company.

The Lagos PENGASSAN wanted to picket the firm when its members in Neconde Energy Limited, the exploration and production (E&P) arm of the Obijackson Group, demanded  the transfer of their benefits and review of severance benefits to match those of multinational oil firms, such as Shell and ExxonMobil, following the relocation of the head office of Neconde to Warri from Lagos.

Neconde is one of the 12 subsidiaries in the Group and is the operator of the Oil Mining Lease (OML) 42 located in Delta State. To make the office and workers to be close to their operational area, the head office of the company was moved to Warri, a development which informed the demands of Neconde workers.

Azudialu urged the labour to consider firms and the prevailing challenges in the sector and the economy. According to him, the management of Neconde, despite the challenges it faced, ensured that salaries and benefits were paid, therefore, it would be unfair to stifle private firms that borrowed money from banks to create jobs for Nigeria and force them out of business.

He said: ‘’We battled for the operationship OML 42 with our partner, the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) – an arm of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Since we bought Shell’s stakes in the oil field in 2012, the battle for operatorship lasted till this year. We were confirmed the operator of the asset in March.

“As we were about coming out from operatorship battle, the oil price collapsed. At a point, we sold oil at $29 per barrel. Amid fallen oil price, militants blew up the Forcados pipeline, which is the only means of transporting oil from the fields to the terminal on February 13, 2016. With this, the output from the asset estimated to produce 100,000 barrels per day (bpd) at the time of purchase dropped to 15,000bpd and at a point, production dropped to zero.

“We were lifting our own share of the production with barges just to be able to pay our workers. Therefore, it is not fair to use a national union to bring down a private company. It is a wrong signal to any investor whether foreign or indigenous. The government is wooing investors to come to Nigeria and invest in order to create jobs, so labour should not frustrate this initiative.

“As I speak with you, the $558million we borrowed from Nigerian banks and other international finance firms to acquire the asset have not been repaid in its entirety and we took another loan, which is almost the same amount, to repair the facilities and we are paying interests on these loans.

Neconde Energy Managing Director, Frank Edozie, corroborated Azudialu. He said despite the challenges the firm faced from the time Shell’s stakes in the oil field were bought in 2012, it had placed the welfare of its staff a priority.

He said at the time of purchase the potential production from the asset was 100,000 bpd but on completion of the acquisition, it fell to about 52,000 bpd. Following the long battle for operatorship, attacks on oil facility, especially the Forcados pipeline, production dropped to zero.

“We produce only 15,000 bpd and we lift the oil with barges to the export terminal just to ensure that our staff salaries are paid. Our workforce has remained a key factor in the evolution of Neconde, and their well-being remains important to us. We are a people-centred organisation, so the value we place on employees is not just because we know that our continued existence is dependent on them, but mainly because every human being deserves a good life, and should be treated fairly.

“For instance, a component of our strategic goal for the year is to achieve an estimate of 70,000bpd. This has led us to develop “barged production” as an alternative to crude evacuation using the Trans Forcados Pipeline which has been out of service since February 13, 2016. We have also undertaken some strategic steps, such as rehabilitation of Batan and Odidi Flow Stations, to enable the achievement of our targeted peak gross production rate, revamping of Jones Creek and Egwa Fields for workover of existing wells and development of other infrastructure which includes refurbishing a gas Central Processing Facility (CPF) in Odidi as well as commencement of re-entry of Odidi, Jones Creek fields Egwa 1 & 2,” he added

  • Understanding secession struggles

    Understanding secession struggles

A crucial premise of the world political order is that it is normatively justified. Otherwise, it makes little sense to defend an unjust system with the might of the state and the international community. Secessionists challenge this premise.

A system, like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder. For secessionists, what they see in the states whose legitimacy they challenge does not measure up to their standard of justice. Hence the grave decision to confront a vicious Leviathan even when doing so risks a certain danger of deadly civil war, and an uncertain outcome that includes ignoble defeat.

Surely, in this, as in other spheres of activities, the advice to keep trying until you succeed at your chosen task is a sound one. One cannot justifiably blame a group that persists against all odds based on the perceived justice of its cause. The commitment of politically aware and morally concerned activists in pursuit of their dream of a just ordering of the world political order is worth paying attention to.

Therefore, today, I choose to look at three such efforts out of a plethora of cases that have emerged in recent times. The focus of each group with its justification for its position and the reaction of its larger political community, a.k.a. the state, provides a powerful insight not only to the sociology of the different states, but also their normative credentials.

Scotland has been an integral part of the United Kingdom since 1707 when the Act of the Union ratified the treaty of 1706. The treaty had unified the kingdoms of England and Scotland under one Kingdom of Great Britain. Before then, there had been cultural and blood ties. James VI of Scotland who was the great grandson of James IV, King of Scotland, and Margaret Tudor, daughter of the King of England, became the acceptable successor to Elizabeth I, Queen of England.  That was around 1603 and the prospect for a common crown and a common parliament was bright.

A common crown did not occur because of ingrained cultural differences and resentment. This was what the treaty of 1706 accomplished. Or did it? Even before the recent resurgence of nationalistic sentiment in Scotland, the treaty and act of unification were not a shoe-in but for the dire financial situation in which Scotland found itself. Ever since, the Union has only alienated many Scots, fuelling the demand for independence, a demand which Brexit has only just intensified.

What has been the reaction of Westminster? With gentle persuasion, a strategy of divide and rule, and a dose of concessions, including devolution, the secession movement has been managed. In the 2014 referendum, 55 per cent voted against independence, while 44 per cent voted in favour. The Scottish National Party has now demanded another referendum vote over the decision of the English people to exit the EU. Time will tell.

Significantly, government response does not include arrests, detention, or jail time for the leaders of the movement for Scottish independence.

An unusual secessionist movement out of California in the United States just disappeared without the United States government lifting a finger. California and Texas, two of the biggest states that couldn’t be more disparate in outlook and political leaning, have shared a common interest in moving for secession whenever they do not like the result of a presidential election. Between 2008 and 2016, it was Texas that wanted an exit. Since January until this week, it is California.

Based on its assets in population and financial muscle as the sixth-largest economy in the world, California can undeniably prosper as a nation-state. This plus the resentment of a federal government that is completely under the control of a conservative ideology which negates everything that many Californians espouse have driven the Golden State to the edge. Interestingly, the state itself is ideologically divided between the north and the south and as soon as it succeeds, if it does, California Republic will confront a new reality of assuaging a minority within the new nation.

We may ask: what has been the reaction of the United States government to the threat of secession by one of its states? Silence!

This is understandable. There is a constitutional provision for dealing with such cases. The movement leaders know they must cross a threshold. They must secure requisite signatures to place the initiative on the ballot. To organise signatures, they must raise funds. More than six months after they floated the idea, the California secessionists had not raised up to one quarter of what they need to put the question on the ballot for 2018. Amidst this, there was the bad press about the link of one of the leaders of the movement with Russia where he teaches English! The initiative was expectedly called off this week.

Back home, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) declared a new Republic of Biafra a couple of years ago. This was after the election of 2015, but it was not altogether a completely new movement. Years earlier, the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) had taken the nation by storm. Both movements boast of massive support from Ndigbo, especially the young generation, and both Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and Chief Ralph Uwazuruike became instant celebrities.

The reason for the support that the two gentlemen receive from youths and adults alike is not far-fetched. Biafra war-experience shocked the conscience of many people around the world mainly because of the effective propaganda machine of the seceding region. The troubling pictures of malnourished children, the famished figures of the elderly, and the account of genocidal activities against the Igbo before the secession move were too gruesome for many.

But hostilities had ceased for more than 40 years and normalcy had been restored. Yet, emotions still run high and a new generation of Igbo, including many who were not born at the time of hostilities, now lead the new movement.

Alas, the last paragraph is only half-true! Hostilities only ceased on the battle field. For many Igbo, there is still a feeling of alienation from the larger society. Though, they have participated at the highest levels of governance, including the presidency, they have only served as Number 2 while the Number 1 position has still eluded them. They feel short-changed in the allocation of states per zone. And with an impressive record of educational achievements, they feel that their potentials have not been and cannot be fully realised in the Nigerian landscape with its contradictions.

Furthermore, it is also the case that the movement attracts, not just a new generation, but also the old and well-established political and intellectual figures. Only recently, the prestigious Eastern Consultative Assembly elected Mazi Kanu as its new President. If that is not an endorsement of his position by the Igbo establishment, what can qualify as such? The governors of the Southeast and the business and professional class have also called for Kanu’s release.

This raises the question: what was the reason for Kanu’s detention in the first place? Per government, he led a movement for secession and this is a crime against the Nigerian state. But for Kanu, the legitimacy of the state is the issue.

A further question is raised: Can this crisis be effectively resolved through the legal system or through a thoughtful process, which takes account of the political context in which the crime is committed and addresses the fundamental issues it raises?

That was why Great Britain tried to deal with the Scottish movement with devolution before the English ventured again into Brexit crisis. On the other hand, the California and Texas movements are largely ignored by the government because they have no oxygen to sustain them.

It is instructive to note that the Eastern Consultative Assembly has restated one more time the grievances that occasioned the agitation for secession. The group identified the perceived injustice of “oppressive census figures”, “asphyxiation through state and local government creation, and “opposition of the Nigerian government to peaceful restructuring.

The implication is that once these grievances are addressed, the agitation will cease. Can we give political solution a chance?

  • Understanding Roses, Clouds and Sleep

If you don’t get enough sleep, you will not be needing the clouds anymore and the roses will be growing on top of you

Generally, a man brings out the rose when he has pushed his wife’s back to the wall in his flagrant abuse of the rules that say: A GOOD FATHER PAYS HIS CHILDREN’S SCHOOL FEES; TRY AND COME HOME BEFORE TWO AM; DON’T ENTER THE HOUSE THROUGH THE WINDOW JUST BECAUSE YOU’RE DRUNK; etc. I say, when men break these laws, they go out and buy a bunch of red, red roses and hand them to the missuses like God handing out the tablets of stone containing the commandments to Moses. Then women’s song becomes COME HOME, ALL IS FORGOTTEN.

I tell you, only a frozen heart can resist the power of the rose. Yeah, he is called a Nigerian. Nigerians have no use for flowers, let alone roses. That’s why I’m the only one growing them in my backyard. Unfortunately, they are taking just one look at me and dying and I have no idea why. Could it have anything to do with the heat and lack of rain and sweet talks?

However, whether we are Nigerians or not, we all have to recognise, greet and celebrate the rose, clouds and motherhood this day because they all consolidate in a very important part of our lives, our mothers! Today is Mother’s Day in some parts of the world, and I hear that in some other parts, the day is represented by roses; it’s even called Rose Day. This is why we must take time to understand roses.

For me, the rose is THE FLOWER’s flower. It symbolises so many things – suing for love, suing for peace, suing for friendship, knitting a nation together, even stopping people from hissing at each other, etc. I guess that is why it is used a lot. To be honest though, when the rose is used to indicate love, it can mean anything from ‘I love you if the tide is not too high’ to ‘I love you with only a quarter of my heart’. Oh yes, men (and women too) are known to do organ donations a lot. They regularly give portions of their hearts to several reigning objects of affection at once. That’s why a woman wants to know her man’s not thinking more about his car than about her.

Most mothers’ hands smell as sweet as the petals of a rose, because they are forever handing out bread, corn, amala, eba, garri, groundnuts, cakes and all kinds of food. And God help you if you cannot take whatever they hand you in the palm of your hand, including amala. Then you get the sharp side of their tongues and palms, like a thorny rose. We were so blessed to have been raised on mother’s strict diet of love and lavish beatings. There is a post in my phone where someone has described the different kinds of slaps he enjoyed from his mother when he was young. Let me see your hand if you did not also enjoy those slaps of love too. I thought so. Liar!

What is important to note about mothers and roses is that they both grow on a well-manured soil, both are found in home environments, and both are watered by the clouds that burst their seams and send down the torrents. While mothers may not exactly sprout out of the soil (one little girl said that Santa Clause brought her mother), I assure you they are watered by the same clouds that hang over roses. Do you remember the buckets and buckets of water they kept sending you out to fetch when you were young? Un Hun, they were used to water her.

So, while we are celebrating mothers and roses, let’s not forget to also celebrate clouds because sometime in this last week, the World Meteorological Day was marked and their theme was ‘Understanding Clouds.’ Have you noticed how hot it has become lately? My, it’s enough to make one go around in one’s skeleton! The sun is shining down on our pates like there’s no tomorrow and there is no watery respite from anywhere.

Now let me tell you some of the theories I have heard concerning the held-up rains. I hear some powerful people are holding the rains somewhere and until they are appealed to, the torrents will not fall. Mmm. Yet again, I hear that the problem is that some powerful countries have diverted the rains to their own countries and since everyone knows just how inefficient we are in this country, they were pretty sure we would not notice anything. If anyone did, he could easily be bribed to keep quiet. Some quiet voices have said though that it’s not raining because the clouds are not heavy enough, but who listens to those.

I don’t know about those theories, but I do know that if we took a little time to understand clouds as the meteorologists ask us to do, we would perhaps get our answer to the question of why the rains are not coming as we want them to. We would understand why the clouds are forming too slowly or inefficiently; why the desert is now attempting to dip its leg in the Atlantic Ocean; and maybe give a few warning shouts.

One thing is clear to me, the rains are not falling because I think the clouds are sleeping. Now, let me tell you something about sleep. Anyone around me will tell you my most favourite pastime in this world is sleeping. They’d be wrong. My most favourite pastime is sleeping soundly. When I heard that the world day of sleep was celebrated about last week (imagine all these days being celebrated at once) I was sad. They could easily have used me for their adverts. What I’m not too clear about is that their theme this year says ‘sleep soundly, nurture life’, and I ask, what life? Between Buharinomics, the rising dollar and this infernal heat, I am not sure exactly where that life is right now or who can best nurture it.

Let me share with you some of the things I found on the internet on sleep. ‘Sleeping is no mean art; for its sake, one must stay awake all day’ – Friedrich Nietzsche; ‘No day is so bad it can’t be fixed with a nap’ – Carrie Snow; and this Irish proverb: ‘a good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor’s book’. Clearly, these people know a few things that we don’t. To start with, there are only twenty-four hours in the day when most of us need thirty or more. So, where is one to get the hours to waste in sleep? More importantly, how can one sleep in this infernal weather when the clouds are refusing to burst their banks?

Well, according to the sleep medicine people, sleep is not optional. Heck, that’s why the Almighty God made the night hours for observing it. That is the time though that some of us do our best work: writers, businessmen, noisemakers, rapists, murderers, fraudsters, scientific experimenters, etc.  The notion, however, is that if you don’t get enough sleep, you will not be needing the clouds anymore and the roses will be growing on top of you. It’s as simple as ABC. Now, who is going to tell the all-night people? How can we persuade them to give the needed respect to sleep as much as the scientists do? I’m talking about those who conduct night vigils, play music all night, hold night parties, etc., and make lots of noises and don’t invite their neighbours.

Clearly people, roses, clouds and sleep have a lot more in common than we know. Pray for the clouds to burst their sides so that you can get some roses for your mother and then you’ll get a good night’s sleep. Happy anniversary all round.

  • Understanding the Buhari/Osinbajo Presidency

SIR: Most pairings in politics are meant to balance the ticket. In many cases, the two persons are like-minded, have a harmonized action plan and work in the same direction. Nonetheless, these two could also be at variance on certain issues, have conflicting views of certain phenomena and maybe sometimes disagree on things.

Nigerians are used to sit-tight leadership at all levels that see political positions as personal, abhors delegating authorities, see their deputies as rivals and a threat; a leadership that often have disdain for their second-in-command; and one that will never support their deputies in anything, let alone transfer power to them to act in their absence. Nigeria has witnessed numerous cases of leaders and their assistants turning against one another. Some have even turned out to become sworn enemies- The Obasanjo/ Atiku feud is a good example.

But President Muhammadu Buhari and Acting President Yemi Osinbajo have re-established the ideal of one presidency and it is working well for the good of the country and democracy. The two have redefined how we view the President vis-a-vis the Vice President. They have created an atmosphere of progressive political synergy never seen in Aso Rock villa in recent times.

Both have unique chemistry. Civility of the two distinguished men has kept the Buhari/Osinbajo relationship close, warm and friendly.

So far, so excellent is Osinbajo’s performance. Acting President Osinbajo has been a good representative of the Buhari School. He has shown that he has not been a figure-head vice president, rather an astute complementing figure to President Buhari’s drive to take Nigeria to greater heights.

He has inaugurated five commissioners of the National Population Commission, constituted the Presidential Task Force on Food Security with the mandate to reduce prices of food items in the country, declared open, the Agenda for Consultative Forum on Economic Recovery and Growth Plan. He sent the name of Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Walter Onnoghen to the Senate for confirmation as substantive CJN. The acting President has also inaugurated the National Road Safety Advisory Council which he heads. Osinbajo has presided over a meeting of the National Economic Council on February 16. The meeting, among other things, directed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to review the foreign exchange policy- which already yielding some positive results. On February 17 the acting president signed seven bills into law. On February 20 he presided over a meeting of the Presidential Task Force on wheat and rice and assured that the nation would attain self-sufficiency in food security. On February 21, Osinbajo presided over an expanded meeting of the Presidential Enabling Business Council and unveiled a 60-day national action plan for ease of doing business. The acting president also sent the name of Mr. Adeyinka Asekun from Ogun state to the Senate for confirmation as non-career ambassador.

When one looks at the relationships between many leaders and their deputies in the past and present, it is apparent that there have never been two persons like Buhari and Osinbajo who have shown Nigerians how delegating power is used for the benefit of the nation and for the development of democracy instead for personal motives.  The two have set a standard which should become a model for leaders and assistants to follow, if our democracy must continue to flourish.
