  • Unemployed steals phones, cash

    An unemployed man, Paul Samuel, was yesterday brought before a Lagos High Court for allegedly stealing phones and a wallet containing N27, 000 from a road user, at gunpoint.

    Prosecutor Yusuf Sule said the defendant committed the  offence on December 24, 2016, at about 9pm, at Bayoff, Ishashi, Lagos.

    He alleged that the defendant conspired with another person, who is at large and robbed Mr. Benjamin Amiame of three phones, a gold necklace, a wallet containing N27, 000, identity card and an automated teller machine (ATM) card.

    Sule said the defendant was armed with gun during the act.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    The prosecutor urged the court to remand him in custody until the next adjourned date.

    Justice Adedayo Akintoye granted the request and adjourned till May 15.

     

  • Unemployed jailed 18 months for peddling Indian hemp

    Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced an unemployed man, Taiwo Musibau, to 18 months’ imprisonment for trafficking 550 grammes of Cannabis Sativa (Indian hemp).

    Musibau, 40, was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) before Justice Saliu Saidu on a one-count charge of drug trafficking.

    He pleaded guilty.

    Prosecutor Jeremiah Aernan reviewed the facts of the case and tendered exhibits in evidence, which includes: A certificate of test analysis, packaging of substance form, the bulk of drug exhibit, a request for scientific aid form and the statement of the accused taken in English language.

    He also tendered a drug analysis form and a large sealed envelope containing remnants of the restricted substance.

    The court, accordingly, admitted the exhibits in evidence.

    Aernan urged the court to convict the accused, based on his plea and the evidence adduced.

    Delivering judgment, Justice Saidu found the accused guilty and convicted him.

    The court sentenced Musibau to one and a half year’s imprisonment, beginning from the date of his arrest.

    In the charge, the prosecution had told the court that the convict was arrested on April 6 on Ipaja Road in Agege, near Lagos with 550 grammes of Cannabis Sativa.

  • Unemployed held for ‘stealing bicycle’

    A 20-year-old unemployed man, Ahmed Omokore, was at the weekend arraigned at an Okitipupa Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State for alleged theft of a bicycle, worth N35,000.

    The accused, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a two-count charge of stealing and unlawful possession.

    Prosecutor Zedekiah Orogbemi told the court the accused, on April 27, about 3:45 pm, at Sabo in Okitipupa, stole a blue Raleigh bicycle, property of Sanni Kabiru.

    He said the accused was apprehended on May 5, at 10am with the bicycle in Igbodigo, Okitipupa.

    Orogbemi said when the police asked the accused to explain how he came about the bicycle, he was unable to give a satisfactory answer.

    He said the offences were contrary to and punishable under sections 390 (9) and 430 of the Criminal Code, Cap.37, Vol.1, Laws of Ondo State 2006.

    Magistrate Banji Ayeomoni granted the accused bail at N30,000 and a surety.  He said the surety must present an evidence of payment of one year tax clearance.

    Ayeomoni adjourned the case till June 13 for further hearing.

  • My plans for unemployed youths, by Olota

    The Olota of Ota in Ogun State, Oba Adeyemi Abdulkabir Obalanlege, says he has liaised with Crescent University in Abeokuta, the capital, to train and retrain unemployed youths in his domain.

    The monarch said the training will hold under a special arrangement to make youths self-dependent or employable.

    Oba Obalanlege, a professor of Mass Communication and ex-lecturer at Crescent University , also said he had discussed with some chief executive officers in Ota on the need to engage the town’s increasing unemployed youths.

    The first-class monarch addressed reporters on Sunday at Ota while unveiling his plans to help youths to get jobs.

    He regretted that although Ota is an industrial hub, this has not translated to jobs for youths.

    According to him, outsiders often get available jobs while his people do not have anything to do.

    Oba Obalanlege noted that the situation will soon change for the better.

    The monarch said traditional rulers and political leaders need one another to maintain law and peace in the land.

    He called for the establishment of a House of Chiefs, instead of the House of Representatives , which he described as a duplication of Senate’s functions, with its attendant huge financial implications on the nation.

  • AIICO Pension to train unemployed, underemployed youths on career path

    AIICO Pension Managers Limited is set to hold a one-day career development workshop for unemployed and under employed youths.

    This was made known in a statement by the company’s Head, Strategic Planning and Corporate Communications, Tunde Otun, in Lagos.

    The company, a Pension Fund Administrator (PFA), is calling on the unemployed and underemployed below 30 years, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members with less than six months to complete their programme and graduates of any discipline or education background with a minimum of 2:2 (Second class lower grade) to participate.

    The workshop tagged: “Preparation meets opportunity: A window to excel”, is part of AIICO Pension Manager’s value-adding commitment to consistently empower youths by helping them build career related skills, expand their knowledge base and improve their brand equity.

    According to Otun, the workshop will also serve as springboard for participating organisations to access a pool of diverse employable talents and trainable graduates with unique value propositions. He added that the workshop will have in attendance career development experts, who will take participants through discussions on tips towards a successful job search; creating the right brand for yourself as an applicant; career talk and building skills; spotlight on common mistakes at job interviews and mastering the art of saving while in employment.

  • Unemployed ‘steals’ microphones

    An unemployed man, Peter Adeoye, who allegedly stole microphones and speakers valued at N325, 000 from two churches, at the weekend, appeared at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State.

    Adeoye, 28, who lives at 1, Alade Street, Iba new site, Igando, a Lagos suburb, is facing a three-count charge of alleged conspiracy, burglary and stealing.

    Police prosecutor Innocent Odugbo told the court that the accused allegedly committed the offences with others at large on February 9, on Candos Road, Baruwa, Ipaja, Lagos.

    He alleged that the accused burgled a Redeemed Christian Church of God parish and Adoration Chapel Church, stealing gadgets.

    “They were, however, caught by security guards. Others escaped,” Odugbo said.

    The offences violate sections 287, 306 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Mr. A. O. Komolafe, granted the accused bail at N100,000 with two sureties.

    He adjourned the case till April 11 for mention.

  • ‘2,324 unemployed youths now employers of labour’

    Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has said the government’s skill and vocational programmes have removed 2,324 from the labour market, making them employers of labour.

    He spoke in Asaba at an exhibition to showcase products and services of youths and women beneficiaries of the programmes.

    Okowa said the wealth creation programme of his administration; Skill Training and Entrepreneurship Programme (STEP) and Youth Agriculture Entrepreneurs Programme (YAGEP) were designed to secure a better future for Deltans.

    “The job and wealth creation programme and activities of our government are designed to tackle unemployment and measure the growth of micro, small and medium scale enterprises.

    “Globally, it is established that certain economic sectors and activities hold the highest potential for job and wealth creation for our economy.

    “These are agriculture, agric businesses, agro-based industries, cottage enterprises, vocational skills-based micro enterprises and small and medium scale enterprises.

    “Others are public works, such as environment sanitation, housing and road construction,” he said.

    The governor noted that spending on these job sectors generates high returns.

    “In fact, interventions and programmes in these sectors and activities are cost-effective and reduce youth unemployment and poverty.

    “They also help in ensuring social inclusion, positive economic growth and sustainable development.”

    Okowa said his administration’s flagship, STEP and YAGEP had achieved what many thought unthinkable.

    According to him, after two cycles, 2,324 unemployed youths are business owners and employers of labour.

    The governor said: “These young men and women who are beneficiaries of the programme, are trained and established in enterprises, which include, ICT and hairdressing.”

    He listed other areas of training as decorations and event management, make-over, catering and confectionery, cosmetology, craft and home care products.

    Others include electrical installations and repairs, fashion design and tailoring, shoe making, welding and fabrication, etc.

    On the programme’s agricultural enterprises, Okowa listed aqua culture, poultry, crop production, agro processing and piggery as areas where beneficiaries received training.

    He said: “At least 450 of these small business owners have come here today to show Nigeria and the world what they have done with their hands since they were set up by the government.

    “For many of them, the journey began 15 months ago when they completed their training programme and were handed over their starter packs.

    “Some of them began their businesses for as short as six to nine months ago. Indeed, theirs is a remarkable story of industry, diligence and determination to succeed.”

    The governor said the government would provide support and guidance for the beneficiaries to enable them realise their goals and provide opportunity for others.

    “Success for these beneficiaries and for us as a government did not come easy. What we are witnessing today is a reward of two years of rigorous planning.

    “Two years of discipline, focus, pace-setting selection process, stringent guidelines, prudent management and commitment to set goals,” Okowa said.

  • Unemployed charged with theft of church’s cables

    A 24-year-old unemployed man, Benjamin Akegh, who allegedly stole a church’s cables valued at N250,000, was yesterday arraigned at a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Akegh, whose address was not provided, is facing a charge of theft, a contravention of Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (revised).

    He pleaded not guilty.

    The prosecutor, Richard Odigie, told the court that the accused committed the offence on October 20 on the premises of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Nation Parish, Thomas Estate, Ajah, Lagos.

    He alleged that the accused entered the church premises and stole rolls of electric cables valued at N250,000.

    Odigie added that the accused was caught while stealing the cables by a security guard in the church.

    Ruling on the accused’s bail application, the Magistrate, F. O. Ikobayo, granted him a bail of N100,000 with two sureties.

    The case was adjourned till November 8 for mention.

     

  • Three unemployed men charged with ‘gang-rape’

    Three unemployed men, who allegedly sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl, were yesterday brought before an Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court.

    Michael Fadipe, 28, Sunday Chukwunero, 26 and Dotun Obajuluwa, 22, were arraigned before Mrs Oluyemisi Adelaja on a three-count charge of conspiracy, indecent assault and rape.

    Prosecuting Inspector Chinalu Uwadione told the court that the defendants committed the alleged offences on May 25 around 8pm, at Fagba area in Agege.

    He said they conspired with two others at large and one Fela Domeh, who accosted and threatened her with a knife.

    According to the prosecutor, the teenager was on her way to buy noodles for her mother from the next street, but they led her to Domeh’s room and had carnal knowledge of her.

    “The victim was threatened with a knife and forced into a hidden dark room where she was raped in turns by the trio,” Uwadione said.

    The offences, Uwadione added, contravened Sections 261, 263 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Chief Magistrate Adelaja admitted each defendant to N500,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The case continues on October 9.
