    UniIlorin to render free education services

    The Institute of Education, University of Ilorin is to provide free adult education and counselling services to its host community, Prof. Mudashiru Yusuf, the Director of the Institute, has said.

     

    Yusuf told newsmen in Ilorin, Kwara on Monday that the services, which would commence before the end of the year, was part of the university’s corporate social responsibility.

     

    “Efforts are on to bring back the self-sustaining extramural classes for candidates who have been failing in public examinations like the UTME and WAEC.

     

    “ The programme will be carried out as social services, its costs will be within the means of members of the University’s host community, “ he said.

     

    The director said that the institute would introduce diploma programmes in Human Kinetics, Health Education, Instructional Radio and Television, Arts and Craft, and Photography for School Certificate holders, and HND conversion programme.

     

    Yusuf explained that the expansion of the courses was part of the Institute’s mandate to add value to the socio-economic development of its host community.

     

    “We are planning a Community Counselling Centre, which is going to be a free service by the University.

     

    “Experts will be engaged to counsel on marital affairs, academic matters, job issues, mental health issues, and teenage affairs, “he said.

     

    Yusuf said the initiative was a joint effort of the university’s Counselling Unit, Centre for Supportive Services for the Deaf, Department of Health Education and the College of Health Sciences.

     

    “We want to give the community a standard extramural environment where students will be taught and not assisted to cheat like some centres are doing; we want to set the standard.

     

    “We are educators; we know the standard and we will not just be blaming others for doing what is wrong, we will establish the standard and then others will follow the standard,“ he said.

     

    According to him, the infrastructure required for the take-off of the programme “are on ground.”

     

    “We are discussing with the administration and we are calling experts to assess what we have on ground, and efforts are on to ensure that this place is put into very good shape,“ he said.

  • Uniilorin apprehends exam cheats

    Two students have been apprehended for examination malpractice in the ongoing first semester examinations in the University of Ilorin (Unilorin).

    Secretary of the Computer Based Test (CBT) Committee, Mrs. Olubunmi Eyinla, spoke of her disappointment in the two students, who were caught cheating during examinations.

    She pointed out that the high level of invigilation afforded the CBT committee the opportunity to uncover the manipulations of the students.

    Mrs Eyinla expressed gratitude to the management for the provision of infrastructural facilities on the campus, particularly increase in the number of computer systems.

    She disclosed that the university had always placed high premium on the welfare of students including the physically challenged.

  • Court orders release of ex-student activist’s result 15 yrs after graduation

    The Supreme Court last Friday ordered the release of the academic record and degree of a former student activist, Olarenwaju Akinola, fifteen years after completing his study at the University of Ilorin.
    In a unanimous judgement, delivered by Justice Peter-Odili,the court dismissed the appeal filed by the University of Ilorin against the judgement of Court of Appeal, Ilorin, delivered on June 8, 2007 in the case involving Akinola and the University.
    The Court of Appeal, Ilorin had earlier upheld the judgement of the Federal High Court, Ilorin, delivered on June 21, 2006, which declared illegal and unconstitutional, the withholding of Akinola’s academic record and degree.
    In its judgement delivered by Late Justice Chukwura Nnamani, eight years ago, the Federal High Court declared that Olanrewaju Akinola’s academic record and degree should be released forthwith.
    It also awarded the sum of Seven Million Naira (N7,000,000) as exemplary damages.
    The Supreme Court, had on June 6, this year unanimously dismissed in its entirety, the appeal filed by UNILORIN against a related case involving another former student activist of the University, Rasheedat Adesina, who like Akinola, had earlier won her case both at the Federal High Court, Ilorin, and Court of Appeal, Ilorin.
    The Federal High Court in the judgement delivered on June 21, 2006 by Late Justice Chukwura Nnamani had ordered that her academic records and degree should be released. The court also awarded the sum of Five Million Naira (N5,000,000) as exemplary damages.
    Akinola and Rasheedat Adesina had completed their courses of study since 1999 and 2001 respectively but the University withheld their academic records and degrees over their alleged involvement in the students unionism.

    Globacom to partner UniIlorin

    A telecommunications company, Globacom, is to partner the University of Ilorin (UniIlorin) for the optimisation of the institution’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) structure.

    This, according to the telecoms giant, will improve the university’s triple mandate of teaching, research and community service.

    Globacom’s Chief Commercial Director Dr David Ehikhuemen made the proposal when he led a team to visit the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali.

    The Head of Globacom Mobile Money, Esaie Diei, praised the university, saying “you are ahead of your time, just as Globacom is the first telecommunication company to support the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) cashless policy. We will like to start a pilot project with you.”

    Prof Ambali acknowledged the contribution of Globacom to the development of ICT in Africa.
