    UNILAG Alumni: town-gown partnerships vital for development

    The University of Lagos Alumni Association, Lagos Branch has emphasised the importance of strengthening town-gown partnerships, stressing that funding of tertiary education cannot be entirely left in the hands of  the government.

    Speaking at a press briefing to herald the association’s dinner tagged: “Dinner with Corporate World,” slated for  Sunday, November 30, 2025,in Lagos, Chairman of the association  Comrade Adedeji Owoeye, noted that it was imperative to mobilise critical stakeholders to address infrastructure deficit on campus.

    According to him, the collaboration was conceived at the last edition of the Annual Shofoluwe Lecture in the university during which its alumni and other well-meaning Nigerians were urged to support the university.

    He said: “To identify and address real needs, we engaged with all faculties and departments to submit detailed accounts of their most pressing infrastructure and academic requirements. We gained a clear understanding of the support needed and how to mobilise the necessary resources from external stakeholders.”

    Owoeye said the event is geared towards  building new partnerships, celebrating their contributions, and reinforcing the collective commitment to education. The association has, at different times, organised and funded various initiatives, including providing glasses for students and staff, donation to different faculties, introducing programmes for upskilling of  students,among others.

    The chairman noted that part of the line up for the event is recognition for outstanding partners, who have impacted the association and the university.

    Dignitaries expected include, Minister for Youth, Ayodele Olawande,  Deputy Speaker of Lagos State, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor, Central Internal Audit, Dr Ayoola Oyeyemi, Chairman Platform Capital,Dr Akintoye Akindele, Chairman NAHCO Dr Seinde Fadein, among others.

  • UNILAG alumni to raise N708m for students

    The Lagos State branch of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) alumni association is hoping to raise N708 million to help students through its Support Our University Project (SOUP).

    Speaking on the project at the Alumni secretariat in UNILAG on Tuesday, Chairman of the association, Dr Lukumon Adeoti, said through SOUP, the association plans to offer scholarships, organize competitions seminars, and employability and skill acquisition training.

    “Rather than people hiding their money, they should come and invest in this good project. The SOUP is a long term project.  We are seeking money from the town to develop the University of Lagos. We cannot leave everything for the government; we want to support the VC in the development of the university,” he said.

    Already, Adeoti said the association had started helping students though the project.

    “We distributed N150,000 to 20 indigent students amounting to N3 million; gave a special computer worth N135,000 to a visually-impaired student; assisted a Russian language student with N100,000; donated N100,000 to the International School, University of Lagos and purchased land at N6 million,” he said.

    Adeoti also spoke of  the association’s upcoming lecture in honour of the late Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Adetokunbo Sofoluwe Memorial Lecture scheduled to hold July 4.

    “The lecture is to sustain his legacy. Prof. Sofoluwe was a nice man who assisted everyone, everyone benefited from him”.

    The lecture, which is the seventh in the series, will be delivered by the Vice Chancellor, Ondo state University of medical sciences, Prof. Friday Okonofua.

    Okonofua would speak on “Changing the Archetypal Medical Education System for Transformational health care.”

  • UNILAG Alumni: unions’ request is legitimate, but…

    The University of Lagos Alumni yesterday described as legitimate the requests of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

    The alumni, however, expressed reservation over the approach adopted by the unions.

    At the briefing yesterday to herald its Week, the Lagos State branch of the association urged the Federal Government to look into the unions’ requests with a view to find lasting solution to the issue.

    Chairman of the branch, Dr Lukemon Adeoti said the relative peace in the campus was due to the association’s interference.

    “We are discussing with the management and the unions and we believe that the outcome is going to be beneficial to all parties,” Adeoti said.

    The alumni announced plans to partner with the school authorities to create a scholarship scheme called SOUP (Support Our University Project).

    The scholarship, Adeoti said, would be for indigent students as well as those with first class grades and winners of educational contests and research in science and technology.  The scholarship award will also cover the best three graduating students of each faculty.

    “Lagos State Branch of University of Lagos Alumni is more active and supportive than all the branches. We give N150,000 to 20 students yearly, bought a special computer for a visually-impaired man, rendered assistance to a man who cried out to us when he wanted to travel out and we recently got 10 arecas of land in Ijoko, Ogun state,” he said.

    The Week, he said, will feature Health Walk, Special Jumat Prayer, Sports Day, Special Thanksgiving, Annual General Meeting, Election, Get-Together and Awards.

    UNILAG Alumni to hold lecture on New World Order

    THE annual pre-Ramadhan lecture of the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni (UMA) for this year will discuss the issues around the New World Order and their implications for the Muslim Ummah.
    The lecture, titled: “Emerging World Order: Issues and Concerns of Muslims”, will be delivered by Prof. Hassan Ahmed Ibrahim of the Department of History and Civilisation, International Islamic University, Malaysia.
    The lecture holds at about 10:am prompt on Sunday at the university’s Main Auditorium.
    According to Chairman, Organising Committee Dr. Saheed Ahmad-Rufai, the lecture will x-ray globalisation, the concept of Global Village, recent power-shifts in the West like England, the United States and France and their implications for the world, especially for Muslims, among others.
    Dr. Rufai added that the Yoruba version of the lecture will be delivered by Founder, Markaz-us Salam, Sheikh Moshood Ramadan Jibreel, Lagos. Chief Imam of the University of Abuja Prof. Taofeek Abdul-Azeez will be the discussant.
    The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rahaman Bello, will serve as the chief host at the event to be chaired by former Managing Director, Airport Hotels Plc Alhaji Niyi Badmus.
    Highlights of this year’s lecture include free medical check-up and scholarship awards to Doctorate and Masters degrees students.
    The UNILAG Muslim Alumni, in its over 30 years of existence, has touched lives by contributing to societal growth through lectures, symposia, offer of scholarship, mentoring, contributing to socio-political and economic issues in the country.

  • Unilag alumni begin scholarship for indigents

    Poor but brilliant undergraduates of the University of Lagos (Unilag) will soon begin to enjoy scholarship courtesy of the University of Lagos Alumni Association.

    Lagos State branch chairman of the association Dr Lukumon Adeoti, announced this during a briefing on Tuesday as the Lagos branch began a week-long activities for this year.

    According to him, the association would commence with 20 students first, who would be eligible to N150,000 per session regardless of their programmes, and all through the stay in the university.

    Adeoti said the project which is in collaboration with the university’s authority, would see the amount take care of tuition, accommodation, feeding and other expenses.

    He explained that the association priortises the academic success of indigent students to enable them concentrate, and complete their studies.

    He said it is disheartening that some brilliant students end up not fulfilling the desire for education owing to financial constraints

    Further Adeoti said the association would extend hand of collaborations with individuals and corporate bodies in this drive.

    A walk show and health lecture on ‘Executive stress management” was held yesterday while, Jumaa’t prayer holds tomorrow.

    Saturday will equally feature various sporting activities, while the association Annual General Meeting, thanksgiving, and award night would cap it up on Sunday.

    Adeoti said the award session would see the Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode lead other friends of the institution who have ‘contributed significantly’ to the development of the university, education and the country at large.
