Unilorin SUG gets new president
Comrade Alao Idris has been elected president of Student Union Government (SUG) at the University of Ilorin (Unilorin), Kwara state.Comrade Idris, also known as Observation, emerged winner of the election after gathering a total of 6,641 votes through an e-voting system.
Hailing from Ilorin, Kwara State capita, he is a 400Level student of the faculty of Common and Islamic Law.Idris defeated two other colleagues simply known as Mr. Gifted and Mr. Quantum who were able to gather 4,512 and 1,161 votes respectively.He was the former chairman of Unilorin Campus Journalist (UCJ) and once lost out an election to Comrade Ishowo in 2014.
Election was also conducted to fill offices such as that of the Vice President, General Secretary, Welfare Secretary and Public Relations Officer.Others include Financial Secretary, Social Secretary and Sport Director among others.

UNILORIN students dance against child abuse
The yearly inter-faculty dance was held on Saturday at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN). Students renewed their commitment to the war against child abuse at the event, held at the Management Lecture Theatre. It was attended by students from all faculties, who participated in a dance competition held to commemorate the event.
The contest, which is scheduled to hold for four consecutive Saturdays, is organised by Strictly Street Dancers (SSDC).
The panel of judges, comprising students and some professional dancers, said the contest was to show the world that war against child abuse could be won through dancing.
Contestants introduced different styles of dance during the contest, including hip-hop, traditional and contemporary dance steps. The judges said the contestants would be assessed based on their costumes, attitudes, stage management, precision and crowd response.
The judges said beyond entertainment, the dance steps would make people to have a sense of responsibility and make efforts to stop child abuse.
The participating students came from faculties of Arts, Education, Science, Engineering, Business and Social Sciences, Communication and Information Sciences.

UNILORIN to host world poultry summit
The World Poultry Science Association will hold its fifth Nigeria International
Poultry Summit (NIPS) at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN). The event will start on Sunday, May 10 and end on Thursday, May 14.
A statement by the secretary local organising committee of the summit, Dr Eunice Sola-Ojo, said the occasion would proffer solutions to various challenges facing the poultry industry such as poultry production (health, bio-security, nutrition, breeding and genetics and biotechnology) through presentation of findings of scientific researches, and reviews of past researches.
She added that graduate of animal science will be specially trained on how to build careers in poultry science.
“I so much believe that this programme will be of immense benefits to the masses, poultry farmers and students of animal science in Nigeria tertiary institutions,” she said.

UNILORIN director shines at international conference
The Indian Institute of Mineral Engineers (IIME) has honoured the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) Deputy Director of Central Research Laboratory, Dr. Baba Alafara, for his research on processing of chalcopyrite ore using hydrometallurgical method, which involves leaching, solvent extraction and precipitation.
The research was carried out to recover copper from its ore and use it for the production of high grade copper oxide. The organisers described the research as excellent and brilliant, praising the work as knowledge-based. They said the product obtained (copper oxide) could find applicable as pigment in ceramic industries, cuprammonium hydroxide solution for rayon, p-type semi-conductor, dry cell batteries production and as safety disposal of hazardous materials.
Alafara attended the 2015 edition of International Conference on Mineral Processing Technology (MPT) in Visakhapatnam, India between March 12 and 14, where he presented a paper on the research.
Other authors of the work include Prof. Folahan Adekola, Dr. Rafiu Bale and Mr. Kuranga Ayinla.
After Alafara presented the paper, the organisers adjudged the paper as the best in Electro- and Hydro-Bio processing session. He was presented with MISRA Award of excellence in Electro- and Hydro-Bio processing research.
It would be recalled that Alafara recently won MTN’s prize for best lecturer award, where students voted for a lecturer who they believed imparted knowledge on them in a unique method.
The MISRA Award is another laurel to Alafara’s shelf of honours, as the feat was seen as an improvement in UNILORIN’s rating in through research and academic excellence.
Scholars from other countries also presented papers in areas, such as Agri-mineral, pytoremediation and Green Belts, Coal preparation and flotation, mineralogical characterisation, comminution, agglomeration and sintering, and waste utilisation, among others.
Over 650 participants from various countries, including United Kingdom, Germany and Australia, attended the event.

UNILORIN warns against handouts
The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has warned lecturers to desist from selling handouts to students.
A circular signed by the Registrar, Mr E. D. Obafemi, noted that the management was aware of the resurgence of the practice, described as illegal, on campus and warned that those caught would be punished.
The circular reads: “The Administration has received reports that in spite of the circulars prohibiting the sale of handouts to students, there is a renewed activity of this illegal business on the campus. The sale is perpetrated by lecturers using devious means and agents such as shop owners and class representatives to reach the students.
The unwholesome practice must not be allowed to continue given the growing positive image of the University.
The attention of all Deans and Heads of Departments is once again drawn to the extant circular proscribing the sale of handouts to students. Any lecturer found violating this directive will be brought to book.

MTN’s surprise gift for Best Lecturer
For his selection as Best Lecturer of the Year by students of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Dr Baba Alafara of the Department of Industrial Chemistry got a surprise gift from MTN Nigeria. He was presented with a 7.5KVa generator by MTN in its season of surprise promo.
The representative of the telecoms giant, who simply gave his name as Mr Sanmi, while presenting him the prize, said students were asked to nominate their best lecturer and the nomination was followed by online voting.
Sanmi said the voting was done in different universities; three winners emerged from the draw in each university, with two students of the institutions also rewarded for being the best.
While receiving the prize, Dr Alafara, who is also the Deputy Director of UNILORIN Central Research Laboratory, said the gift was a manifestation of the conducive environment created by the management for research and development.
He said: “The gift will serve as a motivation for me and other lecturers to continue to give our best to students.”
He hailed the mobile network firm for the gift, and praised the university administration and students who voted for him.
Two students of the institution, Sunday Olubukola and David Samuel, both of the Department of Industrial Chemistry, were also rewarded with Iphone 6. They were chosen randomly in the draw.
At the gift presentation are the President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), Ahmed Ishowo, his deputy, Titilope Anifowoshe and members of the union’s executive.

Ghanaian don hails Unilorin students on discipline
Visiting academic to the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Prof Kafui Etsay, has hailed the management of the institution on the level of discipline among its students. The lecturer of University of Cape Coast in Ghana observed that the conduct of staff and students towards visitors was evident of the UNILORIN’s high moral values.
Prof Etsay spoke last Thursday during his visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Abdulganiyu Ambali, to inform the VC of his completion of his staff exchange programme at the Faculty of Education.
The Ghanaian don told the VC: “I learnt so much since I came into the university. The level of discipline in place really impressed me. The first person I met, a student, offered to carry my bag without knowing me.”
The Dean of the Faculty of Education, Prof A.A. Adegoke, expressed the faculty’s gratitude to the visiting researcher whose works was based on Measurement, Statistics and Evaluation. During the period, Adegoke said Prof Etsay taught masters and doctoral students and held seminar for staff. Adegoke remarked that the Ghanaian educationist did well and made the visit a success. He stressed that the Memorandum of Understanding signed by UNILORIN and University of Cape-Coast was instrumental to the success of the visit.
Prof Ambali, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof Nohimat Ijaiya, hailed the facilitators of the visit, which he said contributed immensely to the development of the faculty.The VC noted that measurement and research methodology, which the visiting lecturer taught, was a challenge to post-graduate students.

UNILORIN, Malaysian varsity sign MoU
The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Universiti Sains Islam, Malaysia (USIM) on students and staff exchange programme.
Other areas covered by the agreement include workshops, research and development projects on leadership and management issues in Islam.
The MoU, which was signed last Tuesday (January 6, 2014), was part of the official engagement of the UNILORIN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, during his visit to the Asian country.
The Vice-Chancellor of USIM, Prof. Datuk Musa Ahmad, signed on behalf of his university while Prof. Ambali signed on behalf of UNILORIN.
The Ceremony was witnessed by the Director-General of the Higher Education Department of the Malaysian Ministry of Education, Prof Asma Ismail.

UNILORIN to host Carnegie African Diaspora scholar
The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has been chosen by the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship programme to host an African Diaspora scholar, Prof. I.S.Y. Ajiferuke of the Faculty of Information and Media Studies, University of Ontario in Canada.
The scholar will work on a collaborative research project with academic staff of the UNILORIN’s Department of Library and Information Science. The research project is expected to boost the capacity of the staff in research and grant.
The collaboration, which is sequel to an application made by the department to the Carnegie Foundation, will be managed by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in conjunction with Quinnipiac University, which chairs the Advisory Council, and will be funded by the Carnegie Corporation, New York, United States.
The research titled: Graduate teaching, training and mentoring in statistical methods for Library and Information Science, is billed to start today and end in April. It will be conducted in the UNILORIN.
The Canadian scholar is one of the 60 Carnegie African Diaspora Fellows deployed to Africa to conduct joint projects submitted by host universities in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda.
The Head of the Department of Library and Information Science, Dr. A.O. Issa, praised the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Abdulganiyu Ambali, for supporting the application.

Accreditation team hails UNILORIN
Accreditation team of the National Universities Commission (NUC) has hailed the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) for what it called “excellent achievements”. Prof M.T. Egri-Okwaji and Prof M.O. Edoga, who led the team, praised the efforts of the institution’s principal officers after a re-accreditation.
The team said the institution is living up to expectation as a citadel of learning and character.
The re-accreditation was a national exercise through which the commission assessed academic programmes being run by universities and rated them against the national education standard. The programmes can only be accredited after an acceptable aggregate level of standard is achieved.
The team moved round departments, inspecting the facilities used for instruction and practice. They also obtained information about capability and efficiency of each department.
Some of the faculties visited included Physical Science, Agriculture and Law, among others. Students were interviewed randomly by the team during the process.
CAMPUSLIFE learnt that the team got good responses from most students, who expressing satisfaction with the method of teaching in the university.
However, a student, who pleaded for anonymity, said most universities prepare ahead for the NUC team by providing almost sufficient facilities before the accreditation. The NUC team, however, warned universities not to cut corners in obtaining license.
