UNIMED confirms hike in school fees, says increase affects only new students

The management of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo City, Ondo State, has confirmed an increment in tuition fees for the 2025/2026 academic session.

This came after some parents staged protests, describing the rise as an “astronomical hike” that could force many students to withdraw from the state-owned institution.

In a Save Our Soul (SOS) appeal to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the parents alleged that tuition for professional courses like Medicine, Surgery, and Dentistry had jumped from ₦1,683,500 for indigenes in the 2024/2025 session to ₦2,000,000. For non-indigenes, fees reportedly increased from ₦2,245,000 to ₦2,600,000.

They further noted that the increment excluded other compulsory charges, including ₦20,000 for Post-UTME forms and ₦100,000 for acceptance fees.

However, in a statement issued over the weekend, the institution clarified that the new fee structure applies only to newly admitted students into the medical school.

The statement, signed by UNIMED’s spokesman, Isaac Oluyi, justified the adjustment, stressing that the hike was limited to those enrolled in professional programmes.

“It is considered pertinent to put the records straight that the university did not increase fees of returning students as reported. It is a misrepresentation of the situation on fee increment.

“All returning undergraduates are to pay the old fees. So, there is no need for any parent to be agitated as UNIMED, Ondo will not do anything to inflict pain on its stakeholders, the most critical being the students and parents.

“As mentioned in the report, the slight adjustment in fees only affects newly admitted students, particularly those admitted for the university’s professional programmes,” Mr Oluyi said.

He stressed that the decision was not taken lightly but was necessary to sustain the standard of medical and health sciences education the institution is known for.

“It was not an easy decision by the management, but it had to be made to ensure that the institution continues to deliver the best of medical and health sciences education.

“It also needs to be stressed that there are no hidden charges by the university. The university is transparent in its dealings. Using the fee for medicine to generalise the fees for other programmes is at best mischievous!

“The fees at UNIMED are not a-one-size-fit all. We have programmes of N450, 000.00, N350, 000.00, to N150, 000.00,” he said.

Oluyi, however, urged the public to seek clarification directly from the university, assuring that the management was mindful of the prevailing economic hardship in the country and would not deliberately worsen the situation for parents and students.

Tuition hike: Parents protest tuition hike, appeal to Aiyedatiwa for intervention

Aggrieved parents of students at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo City, have called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to urgently intervene following a sharp increase in tuition fees for the 2025/2026 academic session.

In a statement titled “Astronomical Increase of School Fees at University of Medical Sciences, Ondo City, Ondo State: Save Our Souls (SOS) to Mr. Governor,” the parents described the increment as “outrageous,” warning it could push many students out of school.

They noted that tuition for medicine, surgery, and dentistry has risen from ₦1,683,500 for indigenes in 2024/2025 to ₦2,000,000, while non-indigenes are now expected to pay ₦2,600,000, up from ₦2,245,000.

The hike, they stressed, excludes other mandatory charges, including ₦20,000 for Post-UTME forms and ₦100,000 as acceptance fees.

Describing the move as “insensitive” amid current economic hardship, the parents warned that many students may be forced to abandon their studies.

“Most parents and guardians who had children and wards in the institution up to the end of the 2024/2025 academic year were paying through their noses, borrowing money everywhere, even with the option of paying in two instalments of 60% and 40%.

“We are calling on our amiable Governor and all well-meaning individuals and organisations to please weigh in on the management of UNIMED, not only to reverse the new increases but also to drastically reduce the previous fees, so our children and wards will not drop out of school.

“We trust that our Executive Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, would help us out by intervening immediately so that we would not die paying our children’s school fees at UNIMED,” they pleaded.

One of the medical students, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the new fees could shatter their aspirations.

“It’s true that the school has increased the fee, and our parents are already lamenting. This is a way of killing our dreams. How on earth should we pay such a high amount? It is still unbelievable,” the student said.

However, a spokesman for the institution, Mr Isaac Oluyi, described new fees being charged as a ‘slight adjustment’ and in tandem with economic realities.

Oluyi, who added the fee being charged by the medical institution is not out of place, said that the university, through the state government, had been subsidising professional programmes in the school.

“At UNIMED, there are two categories of programmes – Professional and non-professional. In the last 5 years, there has not been any increase in fees.

“The slight adjustment in the fees for professional programmes such as medicine, nursing, etc, is to be able to continue to deliver the best.

“As a specialised university, the fees being charged are still competitive. It may interest you to know that there are still programmes whose fees are not more than N150,000.00 at UNIMED.

“The university is aware of the economic realities of the country and ensures that the fees being charged are not out of place.

“To give the best medical and health sciences education, there is a need to put in place the best infrastructure that will make our graduates globally competitive,” he said.

    • AG launches coroner’s inquest to probe death

Fresh controversies have trailed the ongoing investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of the Registrar of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, Ezekiel Adeniran.

This comes as the state government launched a ‘coroner’s inquest’ to probe the death of Adeniran, who was allegedly murdered in his compound on Thursday, July 17, 2025.

Adeniran, who was appointed January 6, 2025, as the registrar of the university, was reportedly found dead at his private residence in the “Olopa to Di Woli” area along Ondo Road, Akure.

Recall that the university management confirmed the death of Adeniran in a statement released by the Head of Media and Protocol at UNIMED, Isaac Oluyi.

The statement read, “The devastating news of the registrar’s death has thrown the university into mourning, as it was shocking. He was still at his duty post on Monday, July 14, 2025. As at the time of writing this statement, the cause of his death is yet to be ascertained.

“Mr Adeniran assumed office as the third substantive Registrar of UNIMED on 6th January, 2025 and remained so until his sudden demise today, 17th July, 2025.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his immediate family and the entire University community in this trying moment. May God repose his soul,” the statement read.

In the wake of his gruesome death, sources claimed that Adeniran was attacked and forcibly poisoned by unknown assailants.

Adeniran, they said, had stepped out of his compound to investigate a strange noise on his roof when the attackers allegedly struck.

The suspects reportedly emerged from a nearby bush before accosting and killing him in the process.

Nearly a month after the incident, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, said the state is set to invoke the Ondo State Coroner’s Law to probe the circumstances surrounding Adeniran’s death.

In a statement released in Akure, Ajulo noted that, “Reports indicated that Adeniran died under questionable circumstances on or about July 17, 2025,” adding that the probe was in the public interest to unmask those responsible.

He asked the State Chief Judge, Justice Olusegun Odusola, to assign a magistrate to conduct the inquest in line with the Coroner’s Law.

Justice Odusola has since appointed Dickson Ogunfuyi, Chief Magistrate and Head of the Ondo State Multi-Door Court, to serve as coroner.

The move comes amid controversy over conflicting claims about Adeniran’s death.

While some alleged he committed suicide by purchasing and drinking poison- possibly linked to a white paper that allegedly recommended his dismissal-his family insisted he was forced to drink the poison by unknown attackers.

Police authorities have maintained that Adeniran’s death was a “pure case of assassination.”

“The man died in the early hours of Thursday. I can confirm to you that it is a case of assassination reported at Fanibi Division,” Ayanlade Olayinka, a spokesman for the state police command, had said in a statement after his death.

Ayanlade added, “We are doing everything possible to unravel the lies and get to the root of the matter. From information available to us, two men reportedly emerged from the bush and forced a substance into another person’s mouth.

“However, we are still trying to confirm the exact details and location. But I can’t confirm to you where it actually happened, but our area of interest is to unravel who is responsible for his death.”

The registrar’s death had shocked both the university community and residents of Akure, sparking widespread calls for justice.
