The Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Professor Clement Adebooye, has cautioned newly admitted part-time students against indulging in indecent dressing and other social vices.

Addressing 412 fresh part-time students for the 2025/2026 academic session at the Olagunsoye Oyinlola Hall on Friday, Professor Adebooye acknowledged the challenges that led many to opt for part-time study, such as work and family commitments, and praised their determination to pursue academic and professional advancement.

According to him, scholarships help students to address financial barriers to university education, where the cost of higher education is a significant burden for many families, promote access for disadvantaged students who are academically talented to higher education, and enhance performance amongst others.

“For today, 18 students benefited from the scholarship scheme of Osun Development Forum, Texas, United States, as they will get N100,000 each, 10 students will get N100,000 each from Hon.. (Engr.) Sunday Olowu and N945,000 will be given to a student by the Egbado College Old Student Association, 1993 Focus Group.”

Adebooye disclosed that over 58 students have benefited from different scholarship programmes by partners of the institution.

He applauded the donors, stressing, “This kind of intervention is what we need across Nigeria’s higher education sector. There are thousands of students who are exceptionally diligent but unfortunately indigent. Such students need helpers from us as individuals, associations and organisations.”

Students of Osun State University have donated 1,000 pints of blood to boost the state’s healthcare system, in a collaborative initiative aimed at saving lives.

The donation drive, organised by the university’s Sustainable Development Solution group in partnership with the Osun State University Medical Students Association, was supported by the National Blood Agency.

Speaking during the event, the convener of the Osun Donate campaign and president of UNIOSUN SDG Sustainable Solution, Motadegbe Adeyemo, said the initiative was inspired by the tragic loss of a leukaemia patient who needed 24 pints of blood but could only secure 12.

He described the experience as a turning point that prompted the students to take action and help bridge the critical gap in blood supply across health facilities in the state.

He said, “We have over 450 seats already occupied but our target is 1,000 free blood donors to boast the healthcare services.

“We should be able to make this event a norm at least twice or thrice a year, but you know, there is a lot that goes into this. What you see here is students coming together to say we wanna make this happen. This is us doing what we can do to contribute to the health sector.”

Also, Deputy Director Medical Laboratory staff, Yetunde Aborishade, explained that “When we tell people to donate, they will think it’s a suicide, but we want to sensitise them and make them understand that blood donation is beneficial to them.

“We have a lot of people like cancer patients that need blood in the hospitals, and even you, who are donating, will also have the opportunity to benefit from the free tests.”

UNIOSUN VC praises Adeleke, says two past administrations neglected institution

The Vice Chancellor of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Professor Clement Adebooye, has stated that after the institution was established by the administration of Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, two successive governments failed to contribute to its development.

Speaking in a video while hosting some aides of Governor Ademola Adeleke at the university’s Osogbo campus, Adebooye highlighted that Oyinlola’s administration, under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), set up UNIOSUN with six campuses and mandated that each local government allocate 5% of its budget to the institution.

He lamented that for 12 years, from Oyinlola’s tenure until Adeleke’s administration, the Osun State government did little for the university apart from paying staff salaries.

However, he praised Adeleke for his intervention, stating that the governor promptly responded to the university’s needs, funding an abandoned office project for professors.

Adebooye also credited Adeleke for helping UNIOSUN secure medical accreditation, constructing a dual carriageway for Folorunso Alakija Teaching Hospital, expanding laboratories, and initiating a sports complex.

He commended the governor for approving N200 million for the projects and for allowing the institution to operate independently without interference.

Row over N297m UNIOSUN TETFUND contract awarded to Adeleke’s aide

    • APC’s allegations are diversionary, says governor

There is rumpus in the Executive Committee (Exco) of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke administration over allegation of N297 million Osun State University (UNIOSUN) Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) contract scam involving Kazeem Akinleye, Chief of Staff (CoS) to the Governor.

The Nation learnt that Akinleye allegedly used his position to secure a contract for his company, which is against Code of Conduct, Part 1, Section 5.

Akinleye claimed he resigned as a director of the company in 2022.

This is coming barely six months after the government awarded N9billion contract to the company of the Deputy Speaker of House of Assembly, Abidemi Oyewusi, who also claimed he resigned from the office.

The leadership of All Progressives Congress (APC) Osun State through the Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, in a statement yesterday urged Adeleke to hand over his CoS to the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

He alleged: “Akinleye used his office and affinity to corner N297million UNIOSUN TETFUND contract for his company, Akinsas Interbiz Ltd.

“We, as a party, are reminding Akinleye that TETFUND has nothing to do with the procurement of the project. It is solely that of the institution, whose Governing Council’s members are direct appointees of the governor. So, whether Akinleye is a former director or a current director in Akinkas Interbiz Ltd with the registration number 770848, registered on September 3, 2008 with address number 290, Station Road, Ede, Osun State, is not relevant.

“We enjoin the Code of Conduct Bureau and Independent Corrupt Practices & Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to invite, investigate and prosecute Akinleye as empowered by Parts 1, 3 (e) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).’’

However, Governor Adeleke said APC’s claims were diversionary and would not stop the prosecution of many top officials of the former administration over infractions in contract handling.

The governor, through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, said in a statement: “The state APC is dead scared of the conclusions of the forensic investigation of the State Contract Review Committee and White Paper Implementation Committee headed by Mr Kolapo Alimi, which indicted many top officials of the last government.

“The state APC is probably aware that the details of the contract frauds, the companies used in perpetrating those fraudulent schemes and their directors are already in possession of the Implementation Committee, which is set to move to the stage of prosecution.

“We posit that no amount of falsehood, baseless allegations and outright fake news will deter the administration from pursuing public interest to a logical conclusion, as all material evidence confirm that Akinleye has not violated  provisions of the Code of Conduct, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), ICPC or any other extant laws for that matter.

UK varsity, Uniosun trains 22 Nigerian scholars on grantsmanship

The University of Birmingham and Osun State University have shortlisted 22 early-career Nigerian scholars for proposal writing and grantsmanship in the humanities.

The scholarships were drawn from 17 institutions including Obafemi Awolowo University, Ekiti State University, and University of Ibadan among others.

Speaking at the commencement of the seminar, Professor Insa Nolte from the University of Birmingham, noted that the training is critical for early scholars because of the technicalities of proposal writing and to be more aware of all the opportunities that exist.

She noted: “We want to encourage people to take opportunities. We are supporting and encouraging them today, they should make the best of the opportunities they have, and by the time they reach that stage and support those who are coming after them.”

The pioneer Vice Chancellor of Uniosun, Professor Sola Akinrinade, admonished the scholars to be wary of using fictitious data for research warning that it has grievous consequences.

He also admonished: “Government while appointing Governing council members must ensure that they appointed people with capacity. If Governing Councils are full of mediocrity then there is a problem.

“The truth is that the University system, polytechnic system and college of education are not places for just anybody to be in the council, but people with an understanding of what the needs of our tertiary institutions are.”
