This event comes on the heels of the earlier edition in Washington D.C., which featured leading policy makers, c-suite business executives, start-ups, and investors.

The summit, organised by Dedalus Global, gathers innovators, investors, policy makers and other key stakeholders in the Fintech sector to discuss technologies transforming finance on the continent, debate regulatory policies, compare best practices, and forge new ventures.

Speaking on the decision to bring the Summit to Lagos, Chairman of the Summit, Leland Rice, said: “Lagos is an ideal host city; it’s an epicenter of Africa’s Fintech revolution and the driving force behind the continent’s entrepreneurial spirit. “The first edition of the Summit in D.C. was a launch pad for several milestone Fintech deals struck among its delegates in the months after the event. We plan to build on these successes in Lagos, with a focus on bringing innovators and policy makers together to move the needle on Fintech regulation and bringing founders and investors together to facilitate further capital raises.”

The two-day event will feature investor missions from the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK) and United Arab Emirate (UAE), an Alpha Expo, featuring the most exciting startups and entrepreneurs in Nigeria, a half-day blockchain masterclass, and an awards ceremony.

  • Akeredolu’s wife trains 400 girls in ICT, solar technology

Wife of the Ondo State Governor, Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu has decried the inequality in education among the girl child and their male counterparts. She said cultural norms, traditional and religious beliefs have helped in discriminating against them.

She spoke at the opening ceremony of BeMore Summer Bootcamp for Girls Naija, 2018, put together by BeMore Empowered Foundation in conjunction with the Office Wife of the Governor. Over 400 girls are to be trained in Information Communication & Technology (ICT), Solar Technology and other life-enhancing skills.

Tracing the history of two nations- Nigeria and United Arab Emirate (UAE) way back to the 1970, Mrs. Akeredolu pointed out that 40 years down the line, UAE has made tremendous progress to become a high income country while Nigeria still remains a middle income country.

According to Mrs. Akeredolu, what made the difference is female education as UAE made significant investments in girl child education with more than 90 per cent of their women educated.

“On the contrary, Nigeria’s female illiteracy population remains high till date.  More than half of our women are still without a formal education. These facts made me to conclude that; one more educated woman leads to much more national income.

“Every single day; 102 women die as a result of childbirth while 2,123 children’s dream of celebrating their 5th birthday is crushed by death. These challenges are largely as a result of low literacy level”, she said.

Mrs. Akeredolu, who expressed joy at being part of the active movement working to help the nation achieve its sustainable development goal, restated her commitment to empowering the women folk while also urging the beneficiaries to strive to be part of the solutions on some of the problems bedevilling the country.

On the successes recorded after the completion of last year’s training, Mrs. Akeredolu acknowledged the feats attained by Tomisin Tomoloju, a student of Fiwasaye who won the Africa Code Week Scratch Competition for Ondo State; young Oluwafunmilola Akeremale, a JSS1 student who has been mentored to become the youngest breast cancer advocate in the state; Tolu Ehimosan who built a state-of-the-art solar oven among others. She urged the new entrants to do their best as their journey to greatness begins.

Mrs. Akeredolu also praised the efforts of the Anambra Golden Girls who clinched the gold medal at a world technovation challenge while also thanking all those who invested both money and time to ensure the success of the 2nd edition of the Summer Bootcamp.

BeMore Ambassador, Ehimosan Tolu in her goodwill message acknowledged the roles women have played in the past towards impacting humanity.

Ms. Ehimosan, who observed that though the society has not been fair in giving the girl child ample opportunity to excel however, extolled Mrs. Akeredolu for creating such an opportunity through her initiative to train young girls.

In his remark, the Chairman, Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC), Hon. Olugbenga Edema thanked Mrs Akeredolu for providing the rare opportunity to train the young girls.

Hon. Edema, who also praised Mrs. Akeredolu for redefining urbanisation by taking the training to the grassroots, expressed readiness to continue to support such laudable projects.

Earlier in his address, the chairman of the occasion, Dr. Moji Atalabi enjoined the girls to take advantage of the training, saying it was a privilege they must explore to the fullest.

Akintan Ayomide and Arifayo Oluwanifemi, two of the beneficiaries in their remarks thanked Mrs. Akeredolu for giving them the privilege to participate in the programme.

It is expected that the 14-day training programme will feature training in ICT, Solar Technology and life-changing skills for the 400 girls drawn from across the 18 local government areas and beyond.

  • Qatar demands difficult to meet – U.S.

Qatar demands difficult to meet – U.S.

The U.S. says some of the demands by four Arab countries as conditions to lift the sanctions over Qatar would be difficult for Doha to meet.

The U.S. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, in a statement on Sunday recommended that the countries sit together and find an amicable compromise to the crisis.

Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirate had accused Qatar of backing terrorism, a charge it denied.

Tillerson said: “Qatar has begun its careful review and consideration of a series of requests presented by Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and UAE.

“While some of the elements will be very difficult for Qatar to meet, there are significant areas which provide a basis for on-going dialogue leading to resolution.”

According to him, a productive next step would be for each of the countries to sit together and continue this conversation.

“We believe our allies and partners are stronger when they are working together towards one goal which we all agree is stopping terrorism and countering extremism.

“Each country involved has something to contribute to that effort. A lowering of rhetoric would also help ease the tension.

“The United States will continue to stay in close contact with all parties and will continue to support the mediation efforts of the Emir of Kuwait,” Tillerson said.

On Saturday, Qatar’s foreign minister rejected the list of 13 conditions imposed by the four countries.

The conditions have put Qatar under unprecedented diplomatic and economic sanctions for more than two weeks.

The four countries also want Qatar to reduce its ties with Iran and close a Turkish military base, setting a deadline on Friday of 10 days.

  • Buhari’s foreign trips in order, says Senator Nakudu

Buhari’s foreign trips in order, says Senator Nakudu

The Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Trade and Investment, Senator Mohammed Sabo Nakudu has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s frequent trips abroad were part of the price Nigeria had to pay for the impunity and reign of terror witnessed in the country during the regime of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Senator Nakudu who spoke with The Nation in Abuja on Wednesday said the criticism against President Buhari on his foreign trips were based on ignorance as Nigeria would benefit more from some of the multi-national and bilateral agreements signed by the president abroad.

He cited the agreement signed by the President with the Government of the United Arab Emirate, UAE, among others as example, saying in a short while billion of dollars starched away in that country would be repatriated into Nigeria.

Senator Nakudu who represents Jigawa South-West in the National Assembly also defended President Buhari’s Ministers , saying it was unfair to described them as lacklustre since they have not even implemented any budget of their own on their assumption of office last year.

He said the 2016 federal budget which focuss on the the diversification of the economy would address the problems of unemployment and poverty if faithfully implemented, stressing there is wisdom in the government action to improve revenue earnings from the minining and agriculture sectors.

His words: “the 2016 budget is a clear intention of the government to do away with oil revenues and embrace agriculture and minining. The 2016 budget is geared towards providing the enabling environment for the economy to grow as can be seen from the allocations to the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing and with economc growth, the issue of poverty and unemployment will be reduced.

“The budget is also farmers friendly because the present government has realized the importance agriculture can play in our economic life. However, it must be emphasized that success in agriculture cannot be achieved without the necessary support from all tiers of government as being done in developed countries.”

Senator Nakudu who enjoined Nigerians to be patient with the administration as steps are being taken to right so many wrongs in the system, said it would take a systematic approach to rejuvenate the economy of the country.

“The administration has prioritized the issues of corruption and insecurity. And we have seen the results of both. Insurgent activities have reduced drastically and people are now being careful and cautious in government offices. The administration is doing the right thing and I believe everybody who mean well for this country would key into that,” Nakudu stated.
